Automatic transmission multitronic, S tronic,
tiptronic
Introduction
Applies to: vehicle s with multitronic/S tronic/tiptronic
The automatic transmission is cont rolled e lec­
tronica lly. The transmission upshifts or down­
shifts automatically depending on which drive program is selected.
When a
moderate drivi ng style is used, the
transmission selects the most economical driving
mode. It will then change up early and delay the
downshifts to give better fuel economy.
The transm ission switches to a sporty mode afte r
a kick -down or when the driver uses a
s po rt y
d riv ing sty le
characterized by quick accelerator
pedal movements, heavy acce leration, frequent
changes in speed and traveling at the maximum
speed.
If desired, the driver can also select the gears
manually { tip tron ic mode) 9 page 81.
Various automatic transmissions may be instal­
led, depending on the model :
multitronic transmission
The multitronic transmission is a cont inuous ly
va riable t ransmiss ion. Power is transferred using
a mu ltidisk clutch. In contrast to conventiona l
automatic transmissions using shifting opera­
tions, the transmission ratio in the continuous ly
variable transmiss ion is changed continuously.
This optimizes the comfort level and conserves
fuel.
S tr onic transmi ssion
The S tronic is a dua l-clutch transmiss ion . Power
is transferred using two clutches that work inde­
pendently from one another. They replace the
torque converter used in conventional automatic
transmissions and allow the vehicle to accelerate
without a noticeable interruption in tract ion.

Automatic transmission
When the vehicle is stationary or at speeds below 1 mph (2 km/h), you must always app ly the foot­
brake before and while moving the lever out of N.
D /S -Normal position for driving forward
In the D/S posi tion, the transmission can be op­
erated e ither in the no rma l mode Do r in the
sport mode S. To select the sport mode S, pull
the selector lever back briefly. P ulling the lever
back again w ill select the normal mode D. The in­
strument cluster display shows the selected dr iv­
ing mode.
In the
normal mode D, the transmission auto ­
mat ica lly selects the suitab le gear ratio. It de ­
pends on eng ine load, vehicle speed and driving
style.
Select the
s port mode S for sporty driving. The
veh icle makes fu ll use of the engine 's power.
Shifting may become noticeab le when acce lerat­
ing.
When the vehicle is stationary or at sp eeds below
1 mph (2 km/h), you must always app ly the foot
brake before and while moving the lever to D/S
out of N.

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)

The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you against
accidentally shifting into a forward or the re­
verse gear and causing the vehicle to move unin­
tentionally.

The selector lever lock is re leased as follows:

Automatic selector leve r lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N posi­
tions when the ign itio n is turned on . You must
press the brake peda l and the release button to
select another posit ion. As a rem inder to the

str ume nt cluster d isp lay when the se lector is in P
and N:

The Automatic Shift Lock only functions whe n the
vehicle is stat ionary or at speeds be low 1 mph
(2 km/h) .

Automatic transmissio n

When you depress the accelerator peda l beyond
the resistance point, the automatic t ransmission
downshifts into a lower gear, depending on vehi­
cle s peed and engi ne speed. The upshift into the
next h igher gear takes place once the maximum
specif ied e ngine speed is reached.
A WARNING
Please note that the drive whee ls can spin if
kick-down is used on a smooth s lippery road -
there is a risk of skidding.
Launch Control Program

The Launch Control Program provides the best
acceleration possible when starting from a stop.
Requirement: The engine must be at operating
temperature and the steer ing wheel must not be
turned .

significant ly after using the Launch Contro l
Program. If that happens, the program may
not be ava ilable for a few minutes . It will be
available again afte r a cool-down period .
- When accelerating using the Launch Control
program, all vehicle pa rts a re subject to
heavy loads . This ca n result in increased

Audi drive select Drive settings
Introduction
Applies to: vehicles with Audi drive select
Drive select provides the possibility to experience
d iff erent types of vehicle settings in one veh icle.
F or instance, using the three
Comfort, Auto and
Dynamic modes, the driver can switch from a
sporty to a comfortab le driving mode with the
press of a button.
Addit ionally, in vehicles with MM I*, the vehicle
setup for
Individual* mode can be customized by
you. This makes it possible to combine settings
such as a sporty engine tuning with comfortable
steering.
A WARNING
-
Improper use of the Audi drive select can
cause collisions, other accidents and serious
personal injury .
Description
Applie s to: vehicles with Audi drive select
The vehicle setup in each mode depends on the
veh icle's features . However, the engine, auto­
matic transmission and steering are always in­
volved.
Engine and automatic transmission
Depending on the mode, the engine and the au ­
tomatic transm ission respond quicker or in a
more balanced manner to accelerator pedal
movements . In the sporty dynam ic mode, the au­
tomatic transmission shifts at higher RPMs .
Steering
The steering adapts in terms of steering effort
and steering ratios. Indirect steer ing that moves
eas ily, like the steering in comfort mode, is best
suited to long drives on a highway. In contrast,
dynamic mode provides sporty, direct steering.

sets the steering to be less sensitive at higher
speeds in order to provide improved vehicle con­
tro l. At reduced speeds, however, steering is
more direct in order to keep the steering effort as
minimal as possible when the driver is maneuver­
ing the vehicle. At low and average speeds, dy ­
nam ic steering additionally prov ides more re­
sponsive steering performance .
Adaptive dampers*
The adaptive dampers* use sensors to record in­
formation regarding steering movements, brak­
ing and acceleration operations by the driver,
road surface, driving speed, and load . This makes
it possible to adapt damping to the driving situa­
t ion virtua lly in real time. Drive select also makes
it possible to sat isfy the desire for sporty suspen­
sion (Dynamic) and comfortable suspension
(Comfort) without giving up balanced tuning (Au­
to).
Sport differential*
As a component of the all whee l dr ive system
(quattro)
c::> page 172, the sport different ial* dis­
tributes the driving power to the rear axle de­
pending on the situation. The distribution of
power varies depending on the mode selected.
The goal is a high level of ag ility and ability to ac­
celerate on curves. The vehicle is very responsive
to steering.
Audi adaptive cruise control*
The behavior when accelerating can be adjusted
from comfortable to sporty, depending on the
drive select mode. Adaptive cruise control also
responds to the driving behavior of the vehicle
ahead in a more conservative or sporty manner .
Engine sound*
The sound of the engine is adapted to the select­
ed mode and ranges from subtle to sporty.

- In some models, the maximum vehicle
speed can only be reached in the
Auto and
Dynamic modes.

- In vehicles that have dynamic steering*, op­
erating noise is heard when starting or stop­
ping the engine. This does not ind icate a
problem.

You can change the driving mode when the vehi­
cle is stationary or while driving. If traff ic per­
mits, after changing modes, briefly take your
foot off the accelerator pedal so that the recently
selected mode is also activated for the engine
and transm iss ion.
Comfort -provides a comfort-oriented vehicle
setup and is suited for long drives on highways.
Auto -provides an overall comfortable yet dy­
namic driving feel and is suited for every day use.
Dynamic -gives the drive r a sporty driving fee l
and is suited to a sporty driving style .

The equipment in you r vehicle will determine
which settings you can adjust. The following ta­
ble provides an overview of the characteristics of
each driving mode.

Airbag syste m
-Never place or attach accessories or other
objects (such as cupholders, telephone
brackets, large, heavy or bulky objects) on
the doors, over or near the area marked "AIRBAG" on the steering wheel, instru­
ment panel, seat backrests or between
those areas and yourself. These objects
could cause injury in a crash, especially
when the airbags inflate.
- Never recline the front passenger's seat to
transport objects. Items can also move into
the area of the side airbag or the front a ir­
bag during braking or in a sudden maneu­
ver. Objects near the airbags can become projectiles and cause injury, particularly
when the seat is reclined.
A WARNING
The fine dust created when airbags deploy can
cause breath ing problems for people w ith a
history of asthma or other breathing condi­
t ions.
- To reduce the risk of breathing problems,
those w ith asthma or other respiratory con­
ditions should get fresh air right away by
gett ing out of the vehicle o r opening w in­
dows or doors.
- If you are in a collision in which airbags de­
ploy, wash your hands and fa ce with mild
soap and water before eat ing.
- Be careful not to get the dust into your eyes,
o r into any cuts or sc ratches.
- If the resid ue should get into yo ur eyes,
flush them with water.
Monitoring the
Advanced Airbag System

Airbag monitoring indicator light
Two separate indicators monitor the function of
the Advanced Airbag System: the airbag moni­
toring indicator light and the
PASSENGER AIR
BAG OFF
light.
The Advanced Airbag System (including the elec­
tron ic co ntrol unit, senso r ci rcuits and system
wiring) is monitored continuously to make su re

that it is functioning properly whenever the igni­
tion is on. Every time you turn on the ignition, the
airbag system indicator light

If a malfunction occurs that turns the front air­
bag on the passenger side off, the

light will come on and stay on
whenever the ignition is on .
A WARNING ...
An airbag system that is not functioning prop-
e rly cannot provide supplemental protect ion
in a fro nta l crash.
- If the a irbag ind icator light ~ page 17
comes when the veh icle is being used, have
the system inspected immediately by your
author ized Audi dealer. It is possib le tha t
the airbag will i nflate when it is not sup­
posed to, or wi ll not inflate when it should .

Correct use of child safety seats substantially re­
duces the risk of injury in an accident!
As the driver, you are responsible for the safety

manufacturer's instructions on how to route
the safety belt properly through the ch ild safe ­

child safety seat, you must first activate the
convertible locking retractor on the safety belt
to prevent the chi ld safety seat from moving

.,. Push the ch ild safety sea t down with yo ur full
weight to get the safety belt really tight so that the seat cannot move forward or sideways
more than one inch (2.5 cm).
.,. If a strap or tether is being used to tie the child
safety seat to the front passenger seat, make
sure that it is not so tight that it causes the
weight -sensing mat to measure more weight
than is actually on the seat .

Not using a child safety seat, using the wrong
chi ld safety seat or improperly insta lling a
chi ld restraint increases the risk of serious
personal injury and death.
- All vehicle occupants and especially children
must always be restrained properly whenev­
er riding in a vehicle.
- An unrestra ined o r improperly restrained
c hi ld can be injured o r killed by being
thrown aga inst the inside of the veh icle or
by being ejected from it during a sudden
maneuver or impact.
- An unrestra ined or improperly restrained
child is at much greater risk of injury or
death by being struck by an inflating air­ bag.
- Commercially availab le child safety seats
are requi red to comply with U .S. Federal
Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 213

It is only possible to turn off the ASR up to 30
mph (SO km/h) for vehicles with front wheel
drive. At about 45 mph (70 km/h) it automatical­
ly turns on again. It is possible to turn off the
ASR at any speed for vehicles w ith all whee l

Event Data Recorder

corde r (E DR). The main purpose of an EDR is to

- Whether or not the driver and passenger safety
gi belts were buckled/fastened; ......

T hese data can help p rovide a bette r understand­
i ng of the circumst ances in w hich cras hes and in­
ju ries occu r. NOTE: EDR data ar e recorded by your
vehicle on ly if a non -trivial crash s ituation occurs;
no data are reco rded by the ED R under norma l
driv ing cond itions and no persona l data (e .g .,
name, gender, age, and crash location) are re ­
corded. However, other parties, such as law en­
forcement, could comb ine the EDR data with the
type of personally identify ing data rout inely ac­
quired d uring a c rash investigation .
To read data recorded by an EDR, special equ ip­
ment is required, and access to the vehicle or the
E DR is needed . In addition to the ve hicle manu­
factu rer, other part ies, such as law e nfo rcement,
t h at have the special equipment, can rea d the in ­
f o rmat io n if they have a ccess to the vehicle or the
ED R.
Some sta te laws restrict the retrieval o r down­
l oad ing of data sto red by ED Rs ins talled in a veh i­
cl e for the exp ress p urpose of re triev ing da ta af­
ter an acci dent or crash event without the own­
er 's consent .
Audi will not a ccess the EDR and/or sim ila r data
o r g ive it to o thers -
- unless the veh icle owne r (or lessee if the vehi­
cle has been leased) ag rees; o r
- upon the official request by the police; or
- upon the order of a court of law or a govern-
ment agency; or
- for the defense of a lawsuit through the jud ic ia l
discovery process.
