When stopping at a traffic signal or stopping in city traffic on vehicles
with an automatic transmission, the parking brake can be applied.
The vehicle does not have to be held with the footbrake . The parking
brake eliminates the tendency to creep with a drive range engaged.
As soon as you drive
off as usual, the parking brake is released auto ­
matically and the vehicle starts to move.
Starting on slopes
When starting on inclines, the starting assist prevents the vehicle
from unintentionally rolling back. The braking force of the parking
brake is not released until sufficient driving force has been built up at
the wheels .
[I) Tips
For safety reasons, the parking brake is released automatically only
when the driver 's safety belt is engaged in the buckle. •
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an incline, do
the following:
- Keep the switch pulled and depress the accelerator. The
parking brake stays applied and prevents the vehicle from
rolling backward.
- You can release the switch once you are sure that you are
developing enough driving force at the wheels by
depressing the accelerator.
Depending on the weight of the rig (vehicle and trailer) and the
severity of the incline, you may roll backwards as you start. You can
prevent rolling backwards by holding the parking brake switch pulled
out and accelerating -just as you would when starting on a hill with a
conventional hand brake. •
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake system fails or
locks.
- In an emergency, pull the switch and continue to pull it to
slow your vehicle down with the parking brake .
- As soon as you release the switch or accelerate, the
braking process stops.
If you pull the switch and hold it above a speed of about 5 mph (8
km/h), the emergency braking function is initiated. The vehicle is
braked at all four wheels by activating the hydraulic brake system.
The brake performance is similar to making an emergency stop:::>& .
In order not to activate the emergency braking by mistake, an audible
warning tone (buzzer) sounds when the switch is pulled. As soon as
the switch is released, or the accelerator pedal is depressed, emer­
gency braking stops.
& WARNING
Emergency braking should only be used in an emergency, when
the normal foot brake has failed or the brake pedal is obstructed.
Using the parking brake to perform emergency braking will slow
your vehicle down as if you had made a full brake application. The laws of physics cannot be suspended even with ESP and its associ­
ated components (ABS, ASR, EDS). In corners and when road or
weather conditions are bad, a full brake application can cause the
vehicle to skid or the rear end to break away· risking an accident. •
Driver messages in the instrument cluster
Warning Vehicle incline is excessive
This message appears when the parking brake is applied on an incline
that exceeds about 30%. ._

may vary, depending on the type of display in your vehicle. The indi­
cator ligh t
CRUISE (US model)/ 0" (C anadia n mo del) w ill also light up
in the instrume nt cluster .
The speed is kept constant by modifying engine power or through an
active brake intervention.
& WARNING
• Always pay attention to the traffic around you when the cruise
control is in operation . You are always responsible for your speed
and the distance between your vehicle and other vehicles.
• For reasons of safety, cruise control should not be used in the
city, in stop-and-go traffic, on twisting roads and when road
conditions are poor (such as ice, fog , gravel, heavy rain and hydro­
planing) -you could have an accident.
• Switch the cruise control off temporarily when driving in
turning lanes, highway exits or in construction zones.
• Please note that unconsciously "resting" your foot on the
accelerator pedal causes cruise control not to brake. This is due to
the control system being overridden by the driver's acceleration.
(I) Tips
• Vehicles with manual transmission: You can attain the set speed
only if the gear that is currently engaged will allow it, or if it does not
tax the engine and allows it to run smoothly. Therefore shift into a
hig her o r lower gear in a t imely manne r.
• The brake lights illuminate as soon as the brakes apply
automatically .•
Changing speed
- Press the lever in the direction of the 0 => page 119,
fig. 110 or in the dire ction of the Oto increase or
decrease your speed . -
Let go of the lever to save that speed.
Change speed in increments of 1 mph (1 km/h) by lightly pressing the
lever. If you keep the lever pressed down, you will alter your speed in
S mph
(10 km/h) increments.
You can also press the accelerator pedal down to increase your speed,
e.g. if you want to pass someone. The speed you saved earlier will
resume as soon as you let off of the accelerator pedal.
If, however, you exceed your saved speed by 5 mph
(10 km/h) for
longer than 5 minutes, the cruise control will be turned off tempo­
rarily. The green symbol in the d isp lay turns white, the saved speed is
reta ined. •
Pre-selecting speed
You can pre -select your desired speed while the vehicle is
not moving.
- Turn on the ign ition .
- Pull lever into position 1

- Press the lever in the
0 or O direction to increase or
decrease your speed.
- Let go of the lever to save that speed.
This function makes it possible, for example, to save the speed you
want before dr iv ing on the highway. Once on the highway, activate
the cruise control by pulling the lever toward
(D . •
Switching off
Temporary deactivation
- Step on the brake pedal, or

On the road -

-Manual transmission: Keep the clutch pedal pressed down
longer, or
- Press the lever into position @ (not clicked into place)

- Drive for longer than 5 minutes at more than 5 mph
(10 km/h) above the stored speed.
Switching off completely
- Press lever in to position @ (clicked into place), or
- Switch the ignition off.

switched off temporari ly . T o resume the saved speed, let up on the
brake or cl utch pedal and pull the leve r to position

The saved speed w ill be erased after turning the ignition off.

Engine speed !
The text message Engine speed ! appears in vehicles with manual
transmission when the driver did not shift up or down in time while
using adaptive cruise control braking or accelerating, causing the
vehicle to exceed or not reach the permitted limit speed. This causes
adaptive cruise control to deactivate automatically. A chime sounds
as a reminder .
Parking brake!
The text message Parking brake! appears if emergency braking was
manually initiated with the Electromechanical Parking Brake (EPB).
The adaptive cruise control is turned off . This is accompanied by a
warning tone.
Stabilisation program
The text message Stabilisation program appears if the Electronic
Stab ilizat ion Program (ESP) has inter vened. In this case the adaptive
cruise control is automatically turned off. This is accompanied by a
warning tone.
Speed
The set speed in mph (Canada km/h) always appears when saving or
changing the speed in adaptive cruise control~
page 125, "How is
the speed stored?" and~
page 125, "Chang ing stored speed".
Speed too low
The text message Speed too low appears if the current speed is too
low
to set or to hold the requested speed.
When setting a desired speed, it must be at least 20 mph (30 km/h).
At speeds be low 12 mph (20 km/h), the cruise control is turned off.
In speeds over 95 mph (150 km/h), the system remains active and
resumes the speed of 95 mph (150 km/h) if the driver removes the
foot from the acce lerator .
Selector lever position!
The text message Selector lever position! appears when the selector
lever is moved to position
N. In this position, adaptive cruise control
is not available. •

Driver intervention prompt
The driver intervention prompt calls on the driver to take
over the situation.

In certain situations, the braking power of the adaptive cruise control
is not sufficient to maintain an adequate distance from the object
ahead. In this situation, the adaptive cruise control calls on
you as the
driver to take action.

Introduction
Audi drive se lect provides the possib ility to experience different types
o f vehicle se ttings in one ve hicle. For ins tan ce, using the t hree
COMFORT, AUTO and DYNA MIC modes, the driver can switch from a
sporty to a com fortab le dr iv ing mode with the p ress of a bu tton .
Add itionally, in ve hicles with MMI*, the veh icle se tup for I NDI­
VIDUAL * mo de can be c ustomized by you. This makes it poss ib le to
combi ne sett ings such as a sporty engi ne tuning w it h light st eering.
& WARNING
• Improper use of the Audi drive select can cause collisions,
other accidents and serious personal injury.
• Never drive at speeds that are too high for traffic , road and
weather conditions. •

Description
The ve hicle setup in eac h mode depends on the vehicle's features.
However, the engine and servo tron ic are always affe cted . The auto ­
matic transm issio n*, dy namic steering* and adapt ive dampers * are
also ad justab le.

adapted to d riving situations.
Dynamic steering c hanges the s teer ing ra tio as a func tion of the
dr iv ing speed in order to optimize the driver's required steering
effor t. T his se ts the s teer ing to be less sensi tive at hig he r speeds in
orde r to provide greate r co ntro l over the ve hicle. At reduced speeds,
however, steering is more direct in o rder to keep the stee rin g effort
as min imal as possible whe n the dr ive r is maneuvering the vehicle. At
low and average speeds, dynam ic steer ing add it iona lly p rovides more
respo nsive steer ing pe rfo rmance. The dr iver can set the basic
steering ratio characteristics.

adaptive dampers use senso rs to recor d info rmat io n regar ding
steering movements, braking and acce lera tion operations by the
dr ive r, road sur face, driving speed, and lo ad . T his makes i t possib le to
adapt damp ing to the driving si tuat ion v irt ua lly in r eal t ime . Audi

s u spension (DY NAMIC) and comfortab le sus pension (COMFOR T)
without giving up balanced tun ing (A UTO) .

• Sporty sh ifting characteristics can be set by selecting the
DYNAMIC mode. The S selector lev er position is not available.
• The dynamic steering may make noise when starting or stopp ing
the engine. This does not indicate a problem .•

- Turn on the ignition.
- Press the left or right arrow button until the desired mode
appears in red.
You can change the driv ing mode when the vehicle is stationary or
w hil e driving. If traffic permits, after chan ging modes, briefly take
your foot off the accelerator pedal so that the recently selected mode
is also activated for the eng ine and transmission .
COMFORT
The COMFORT mode prov ides a comfo rtable vehi cle se tting . The
engine and automatic t ransm ission * respond in a balanced manner
when the accelerator pedal is pressed or released. Steering is light
and ind irect*, and adaptive dampers* provide a soft suspension . The
setting is ideal for driving on long stretches , such as on freeways.
AUTO
Full use of AUTO provides a comfortable, yet dynamic feel. The
sett ing is perfect for daily use .
DYNAMIC
DYNAMIC gives the vehicle a sporty feeling. The eng ine responds
quickly to accelerator pedal movements, and steer ing is sporty and
more direct. The adap tive dampers* are adjus ted to provide a stiffer
suspension and the automatic t ransmission* sh ifts at higher RPMs.
The setting is ideal for sporty driving .

Gearshift lever
The clutch pedal must be depressed all the way before
you can start the engine.
The manual transmission in your Audi is equipped with an
interlock-feature.
- Depress the clutch pedal all the way .
- Start the eng ine with the gears hift lever in Neutral and the
clutch peda l depressed.
0 Note
Always depress the clutch pedal fully when changing gears. Do not
hold t he veh icle on a hill with the clutch peda l part ia ll y depressed.
T hi s may cause premature clutch wear or damage.
[I) Tips
• Resting your hand on the gearshift lever knob while driving will
cause premature wear in the transm ission.
• The back -up lights go on when you sh ift into Reverse with the igni ­
tion on. •

Starting the engine

- Do not accelerate while selecting a driving position . At this
time the engine must be at idle speed so that undue stre ss is
not placed on the clutches in the transmission.
- Remember : Even when stopped briefly with the automatic
transmission in D,S or R , engine power is being transmitted to
the wheels . Your vehicle could " creep" forward or backward.
When stopped, keep the brake pedal fully depressed and use
the parking brake if necessary to keep the vehicle from rolling .
• If the selector lever is unintentionally mo ved into N while you
are driving, take your foot off the accelerator p edal and wait for
the engine to return to idle speed before selecting a driv ing posi­
tion .
• Never shift into R or P when the vehicle is in motion.
• Never get out of the dr iver's seat when the engine is running.
• If you must get out of the vehicle, move the selector lever
secure ly into the P position and app ly the parking brake firmly.
• If the engine must remain running, never have any driving
position engaged when checking under the hood. Make sure the
selector lever has securely engaged and is locked in P with the parking brake firmly set=>
page 267, "Engine compartment ".
Otherwi se, any increase in engine speed may set the vehicle in
motion, even with the parking brake applied. •

In certa in circumstances it may be advantageous to temporarily
switch to the manual shift program to manually select gear rat ios to
match specific driving conditions~

S -Sport position *
Select this position for sportie r performance. In this position, the
transm ission will not upsh ift as soon, allowing the vehicle to use the
increased power available at higher eng ine speeds to ach ieve livelier
acceleration .

you must always apply the foot brake before and while moving the lever to

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you against acci­
dentally shifting into a forward or the reverse gear and
causing the vehicle to move unintentionally .

- Turn the ignit ion on.
- Step on the brake pedal.
