in front of the windshield must be free of
ice, snow and leaves.
- The air flowing out of the vents and
throughout the vehicle's entire interior is
discharged at the rear of the vehicle.
Make sure that the outlet slots are not
covered by clothing, etc.
- Climate control works most effectively if the windows and the panoramic sliding/
tilting sunroof* are closed . However, if
the interior of a parked vehicle is ex­
tremely hot from the sun, briefly open­
ing the windows can speed up the cool ­
ing process.
This overview will help you to familiarize yourself with the climate controls .

Setting the temperature

The temperature can be set separately for the
driver's side and fron t passenger' s side.

mate control display. When the MMI display is
turned on, the temperature set ting appears
for a few seconds on the screen.

without stepp ing on the
clutch or the brake, the ig nition is switched o n
and off. With the ignit io n on, t he steer ing
wheel is un locked.
You can only remove the key w ith the ignition
sw itched off . T o do this, you have to p ress on
the key aga in. Wi th an a utomat ic transm is­
sion, the se lecto r lever must be in the
P posi­
tion .
When starting the engine, ma jor e lectr ica l
l oads are switched off tempo ra rily .
After start ing a cold engine, there may be a
brief period of increased no ise because the oi l
p ressu re must fi rst build up in the hydraulic
va lve adjusters. This is normal and not a cause
fo r concern.
If the engine should not start immediately,
the starting p rocess is automatically stopped
after a sho rt time . Repeat sta rting p rocedu re.

the brake pedal to sta rt the eng ine on a veh i­
cle with an automat ic transm iss ion.

This message appears if you do not step on
the clutch peda l to start the engine on a ve hi­
cle with a manua l transm ission .
Engage Nor P to start engine
T his message appears when attempting to
start the engine if the se lector lever for the
automatic transmission is not in the
P or N

Shift to P, otherwise vehicle can roll away.

could be operated. This can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons re quiring
assistance unattended in the ve hicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preventing people from es­ caping from t he veh icle on t heir own in
the ev ent of an e merge ncy. D epe nding
on t he time of yea r, peop le inside the ve­
hicle can be expo sed to very high o r very
low tempe ra tur es.
- Never re mo ve the ign ition key from the
ig nition lo ok while the veh icle i s m oving .
O the rwise, the s teering lock could su d­
d enly en gage and yo u wo uld not be a ble
to steer the vehicle .

Ignition lock defective .
-Avo id hi gh engine spee ds, fas t a ccelera ­
tion or heavy engine loa ds while the en­
gine is still cold . This could damage the
eng ine.

-If the engine has been under heavy load
for an extended period, heat builds up in
the engine compartment after the en­
gine is switched off -there is a risk of
damaging the engine. Allow the engine
to run at idle for about 2 m inutes befo re
switching it off .
@ Tips
If you open the driver's door with the igni­
tion switched on, a buzzer sounds and the
message
Ignition i s on appears in the in­
strument cluster display . Switch the igni­
tion off.
Switching engine off with the button

If necessary, the engine can be switched off
with the selector lever in the
R , D or S* posi­
tions. To do so, step on the brake pedal and press and hold the
I START ENGINE S T OP I but­
ton (veh icle speed must be less than 6 mph/
10 km/h.
& WARNING
- Never turn off the eng ine unti l the vehi­
cle has come to a comple te stop.
- The brake booste r and se rvotronic only
work when t he engine
is running. With
the ignition turned off, yo u have to apply
more force when steering or braki ng .
Since you cannot steer and stop norma l­
ly, this can lead to accidents and serious
injuries.
- For safety reasons, you should always
park your vehicle with the se lector lever
in P. Otherwise, the veh icle could inad­
vertently roll away. -
After the engine has been switched off,
the radiator fan can cont inue to run for
up to 10 minutes -even with the ignition
switched off. It can also sw itch on again
after some t ime if the coolant tempera­
ture rises as the result of a heat bu ildup
or if the engine is hot and the engine
compartment is additionally heated by
the s un's rays .
Q;) Note
If the engine has been under heavy load

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The ele ctromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

pedal and press the switch at the same t ime

Your vehicle is equipped with an electrome­ chanical parking brake . The parking brake is
designed to p revent the veh icle from rolling
u nintentionally and replaces the hand b rake. .,..

Using the parking brake to perform emer­
gency braking will slow your vehicle down
as if you had made a full brake application.
The laws of physics cannot be suspended
even w ith ESP and its associated compo­
nents (ABS, ASR, EDS). In corne rs and
when road or weather conditions a re bad,
a full brak e application can cause the vehi­
cle to skid or the rear end to break away -
r isking an accident.
Driver messages in the instrument
cluster
Caution: Vehicle parked too steep
This message appears when the park ing brake
is applied on an incline that exceeds about
30%.
In this case the braking power of the parking
brake may
not be adequate to prevent the ve­
hicle from rolling unintentionally .
Press brake pedal to release parking brake
This driver message appears when the switch
to release the parking brake was pressed. The
parking brake can only be released if you step
on the brake pedal and at the same time press
the switch or you automatically release the
parking brake with the start ing ass ist
<=> page 98.
(p] Parking brake m alfunction!
This driver message appears together with
the yellow
IIJ symbo l when there is a parking
brake malfunction.

Cruise control
Switching on
The cruise control system makes it possible to
drive at a constant speed starting at 20 mph (30 km/h) .

The stored speed and the green symbol

may vary, depending on the type of display in
your vehicle. The ind icator light

The speed is kept constant by modifying en­
gine power or through an active brake inter­
vention.

- Always pay attention to the traffic
around you when the cruise control is in

of 50 mph (80 km/h)
- a distance of 108 feet (33 meters) at a
speed of 75 mph (120 km/h)
