In order to become familiar with the gearshift
i ndictor, at first just drive the way you a re
used to.
If the cu rrent gear· and the d riving
situation· is not the best one for conse rv ing
fuel, then the indicator will display the recom­
mended gear. The disp lay shows the current

gear and the gear that is recommended

skipping a gear (3 > S).
If there is no gearshift recommendation, then
just drive in the appropriate gear for conserv­
i ng fuel.

This indicator can help you conserve fuel.
This indicator is not meant to show you
which gear you should a lways be in in all
driving situations. Sometimes, in situa­
tions s uch as passing, driving through
mountains or when towing a t railer, there
won't be any gears hift recommendation.

Never put waste paper in the ashtray . Hot
ashes or other hot objects in the ashtray

• Remove the cigarette lighter when it pops

A WARNING
The cigarette lighter only works when the ign ition is switched on. Incorrect usage
can lead to serious injuries or burns. For
this reason, children should never be left
unattended in the vehicle because this in­
creases the risk of injury .

The cigarette lighter can be damaged if
you connect electrical accessories to it .

General overview
A WARNING
-Always remove objects from the instru­
ment panel. Any items not put away

while driving or when accelerat ing or
when applying the brakes or when driv­
ing around a corner .
- When you are dr iving make sure that
anyth ing you may have placed in the cen­
ter conso le or other storage locations
cannot fall out into the footwells . In case
of sudden braking you would not be able
to brake, dep ress the clutch or acce le r­
ate.
- Any pieces of clothing that you have
hung up must not interfere wit h the driv­
er's view. The coat hooks are designed
only for lightweight clothing. Never hang
any clothing with hard, pointed or heavy
objects in the pockets on the coat hooks.
During sudden braking or in an accident -
especially if the a irbag is deployed -
these objects could injure any passen ­
ge rs in side the vehicle.

The steering wheel position is fully adjustable
up and down and forward and back.

cannot provide as much protection in an
accident . Always make sure that the
steer ing whee l is a ligned with your
ches t.
- Always h old the ste ering whee l w ith your
hands at t he 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock posi­
tions to redu ce the risk of persona l injury
if the driver's airbag dep loys .
- N ever hold the stee ring wheel at the 12
o' clock posi tion or wi th your hands in si de
the stee rin g wheel rim or on t he steering
wheel h ub. Holding the steering whee l
the wrong way can cause se rious injuries
to the hands, arms and head if the driv­
er 's airbag deploys.

the engine compartment after the engine

Switching the ignition on/off
If you would like to switch the ignition on
without starting the engine, follow these
steps :
.. Press the
!START ENGIN E STOP! button
without pressing the clutch pedal (for man ­
ual transmissions) or the brake pedal (for
automatic transmiss ions) .
.. To switch the ignition off, press the but ton
again. If
the engine should not start immediately,
the sta rting process is automatically stopped
afte r a short t ime. Repeat start ing procedure.
When sta rting the engine, major elect rical
loads are switched off temporar ily .
After a cold engine is started, there may be a
brief period of increased noise because oil
pressure must first build up in the hydrau lic
valve adjusters . This is norma l and not a cause
for concern .
.&_ WARNING
-
-Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation.
- Never turn off the engine until the vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your veh icle . Otherw ise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equ ipment such as the power windows
could be operated . This can lead to seri­
ous injury .
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle . The
doors can be locked using the remote
tr an smitter, preventing people from es­
caping from the veh icle on their own in
the event of an emergency. Depending
on the time of year, peop le inside the ve­
hicle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatures .

-Avo id high engine rpm, full throttle and
heavy eng ine loads until the engine has
reached operating temperature -other­
wise you risk engine damage.
@ For the sake of the environment
Do not let the engine run while parked to
warm up. Begin driving immediately. This
reduces unnecessary emissions .

Emergency off
If necessary , the eng ine can be sw itched off
with the selector lever in the R or D/S pos i­
tions. To do so , step on the brake peda l and
p ress and hold the
I S TA RT ENGINE STO PI bu t­
ton vehicle speed must be less than 6 mph (10 km/h).
A WARNING
- Never turn off the eng ine before the ve­
hicle has come to a complete stop . The
full function of the brake booster and the
power steering is not guaranteed. You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary . Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usua lly would, t his could
lead to crashes and serious injur ies .
- For safety reasons, you should always
par k your vehicle with the se lector lever
in P. Otherwise, the ve hicle co uld i nad­
vertent ly roll away.
- T he rad iator fan ca n con tinue to ru n for
u p to 10 mi nutes eve n after yo u have
t ur ned o ff the eng ine and removed the

ticularly not childre n should rema in in
the vehicle . Locked doors make it mo re
difficult for emergency wo rke rs to get in­
to the vehicle -put ting lives at risk .
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking broke is released automatically upon starting.
Stopping and applying p arking brake

ply the parking brake .

You can also p ress the accelerator pedal down
to increase your speed , e .g. if you want to
pass someone. The speed yo u saved earlier
will resume as soon as you let off of the accel­
erator pedal.
If, however, you exceed your saved speed by
6 mph (10 km/h) for longer than 5 min utes,
the cruise control will be turned off tempora­ rily. The green symbol in the display turns
white . The saved speed remains the same .
Presetting your speed
You can preset your desired speed while the
vehicle is not moving.

way before you can start the engine .
The manual transmission in your Audi is
equipped with an
interlock-feature.
• Depress the clutch pedal a ll the way.
• Start the engine with the gearshift lever in
Neutral and the clutch pedal depressed.
(D Note
Always depress the clutch peda l fully when
changing gears. Do not ho ld the vehicle on
a hill with the clutch pedal partially de­
pressed. This may cause premature clutch
wear or damage .
@ Tips
-Resting your hand on the gearsh ift lever
knob while driving will cause premature
wear in the transm ission.
- The back-up lights go on when you sh ift
i nto Reverse w ith the ignition on.

lever from P or N to D/S and release the but­

• Wait briefly until the transmission has shift­
ed (you wi ll feel a slight movement).
• Remove your foot from the brake pedal and
accelerate .

you are ready to move, because powe r

a dr iving posit ion is engaged.

-Do not accelerate wh ile selecting a
driv ing position. At this time the en­
gine must be at idle speed so that un­ due stress is not placed on the clutches
i n the transmiss ion.
- Remember: Even when stopped br iefly
with the automatic t ransmission in D/S
o r R, eng ine power is being transmit­
ted to the wheels. Your veh icle cou ld
"creep" forward or backwa rd. Whe n
stopped, keep the brake pe dal fu lly de­
pressed and use the pa rking brake if
necessary to keep the vehicle from ro ll­
ing.
- If the selec to r l ever is unintentionally
moved into N while you are driving, take
your foot off the accelerator peda l and
wait for the eng ine to ret urn to idle
speed before se lecting a dr iv ing pos ition.
- Never sh ift into R or P when the vehicle is
in motion.
- Never get out of the d river's seat when
the eng ine is running.
- If you m ust get out of the vehicle, move
the selector lever secure ly into the P po­
sition and apply the parking brake firmly.
- If the engine must remain r unning, neve r
have any driving position engaged when
checking under the hood . Make sure the
selector lever has securely engaged and
is locked in P w it h the par king brake

Othe rwise, any in cr ease in engine
speed may set t he vehi cle in motion,
even with the park ing brake applied .

For safety reasons, the pa rking brake is re­

tray holder on the front of the ashtray re­
cess.

The selector lever can only be moved from the
P position if the ignition key is in the lock and
the ignition is turned on. If the vehicle has to
be pushed or towed if the power supply fa ils
(e.g. battery is discharged), the selector lever
must first be moved to the N position using
the emergency locking device.
S tronic ®
Introduction
Applies to vehicles: with S tronic transm ission
Your vehicle is equipped with an electronical­
ly-controlled manual transmission called S
tronic ®. Two independent clutches transfer
the power between the engine and transmis­
sion . They rep lace the torque converter used
in conventional automatic transmissions and
allow the vehicle to accelerate without a no­
ticeable interruption in traction.
You can also shift the gears
manually using
tiptronic , if you like ¢ page 92.
Selector lever positions

The wheels are mechanically locked in this po­
sition. You can only shift into Park when the
vehicle is

R - Reverse
Only shift into reverse gear when the vehicle is
stationary and the engine is running at idle
