Travel mode*
The headlight beam is asymmetrical. This pro­
v ides stronger illum ination on the side of the
road on wh ich you are driving .
If you are driv­
i ng in a count ry that d rives on the opposite
side of the road from your own country, th is
will cau se glare for on coming dr ivers. To pre­
vent glare:
- Trave l mode must be selected in vehicles
with Xenon headlights*.
- In veh icles with halogen headlights, ce rtain
areas of the head light lenses must be cov­
ered w ith wate rproof adhesive covers that
prevent light from passing thro ugh. Fo r

When trave l mode is activated, a display in
the dr iver information system indicates

Emergency flashers

The emergency flashers makes other moto­
rists aware that you or your vehicle are in an
emergency situation .

When the emergency flas hers are on, all four
turn signals b link at the same time. The turn
s ignal indicator lights .

ment cluster, as well as the light in the emer­
gency flasher switch ~ blink likewise.
You can indicate a lane change or a tu rn w hen
the emergency flashers are switched on by us­
ing the turn signal lever. The emergency flash­
ers stop temporarily.
T he emergency flashers also work when the
ignition is turned off.
T he emergency flashers w ill turn on a utomat i­
ca lly if yo u are in an accident where the airbag
has deployed.

You sho uld turn on the emergency f las hers
when:
- yo u are the last veh icle standing in a t raf ­
fic jam so that any other vehi cles coming
can see you, or whe n
- yo ur vehicle has bro ken down or you are
in an eme rgency s ituation, or when
- yo ur vehicle is be ing towed by a tow
truck or if you are tow ing another vehicle
beh ind you.

If the switch is in the center position, the inte­
rior l ights turn on automatically when you un­
lock the vehicle, open a door or remove the ig­
n ition key. The interior lights turn off several
seconds after your close the doors , when you
lock the vehicle or when you turn the ign it ion
on. When a door is open, the light tu rns off
after a few minutes.
@ Front /rear r eading lights
To turn a reading light on/off, press the but­
ton~

The appearance and location of the rear read­
ing lights may differ depending on the model.
Instrument illumination
The basic brightness of the illumination for
the instruments, the center console and the
display can be adjusted .

The instrument i llum ination (for dials and
needles) lights on when the ignition is
switched on and the vehicle lights are
turned off . As the daylight fades, the illu­
mination of the dia ls likewise dims auto­
matically and wi ll go out completely when
the ou tside light is very low. This feature is
meant to rem ind you to sw itch on the
headlights when ou tside light conditions
become poor .

Installing the head restraints
• Slide the posts on the head restraint down
into the guides until you feel the posts click
into place .

So that the driver can have a better view to
the rear, the head restraints should be pushed
down completely when the rear seats are not
occupied.
A WARNING
- Read and heed all WARNINGS

-Only remove the rear seat head restraints
when necessary in order to install a child seat ¢
page 169 . Install the head re­
straint again immediately once the child
seat is removed . Driving without head re­
straints or with head restraints that are
not properly adjusted increases the risk
of serious or fatal neck injury dramatical­
ly.
- Vehicles with a pass through in the cen­
ter conso le have seating for four. The
long center console between the two
rear seats is
not a seating position.
Therefore, a safety belt is not provided .

Correct ly adjusted head restraints and
safety belts are an extreme ly effective
combination of safety features.
Seat memory
Description
Applies to vehicles: with memory function
The memory function allows you to quickly
and easily store and recall personal seating
profiles for the driver . The memory function is
operated through the master key and the
memory buttons in the driver's door .
The driver's seating profile is stored and as ­
s ig ned to the master key each time the vehicle
is locked. When you open the door, the seat
profile is automatically recalled. If two people
use one vehicle, it is recommended that each
person always uses "their own" master key .
Up to 2 seat profi les can be stored in the
memory buttons in the driver's door . Once

they are stored, these seat profiles can be
se lected at any time .
I n addition to the driver 's sea t set tings, you
can also s tore and access the exterior mir ror
adj ustment settings* using the remote con­
trol key or memory button .
Remote control key
Applies to vehicles: with seat memo ry
To assign the driver's seat settings to the re­
mote control key when locking the vehicle, the
function must be activated in the radio or

The memory buttons are located in the driv­
er's door.
Swit ching the memory fun ction on /off
.. Press the !ON/O FF I button to switch the
memory function on/off. The word
OFF
lights up when the memo ry function is
switched off . Seat profiles are neither stored
nor recalled.
Storing a seat profile
.. Press the ISET I button. Whe n the word SET
lights up, the memory is ready to store set­
tings .
.. Press a memory button

.. If the driver's door is open and the ignition

- For safety reasons, the seat setting can
only be recalled when the vehicle is sta­
tionary - ot herwise you risk hav ing an ac­
cide nt.
- In an emergency the recall p rocedure can
be cancelled by pressing the
I ON/OFF !
switch or by tapping the memory bu t­
tons.
Ashtray

Emptying the a shtray

A WARNING
Never put waste paper in the ashtray. Hot
ashes or other hot objects in the ashtray
could set waste paper on fire.
Cigarette Lighter

• Press the cigarette l ighter in .
• Remove the cigarette lighter when it pops
out.
A WARNING
The cigarette lighter only works when the
ignition is switched on. Incorrect usage
can lead to serious injuries or burns. For
this reason, children should never be left unattended in the vehicle because this in­
creases the risk of injury.
(D Note
The cigarette lighter can be damaged if
you connect electrical accessories to it .
Storage
General overview
A WARNING
-Always remove objects from the instru­
ment panel. Any items not put away

could slide around inside the vehicle
while driving or when accelerat ing or
when applying the brakes or when driv­
ing around a corner.
- When you are driving make sure that
anything you may have placed in the cen­
ter conso le or other storage locations
cannot fall out into the footwells. In case
of sudden braking you would not be able
to brake, dep ress the clutch or acce le r­
ate.
- Any pieces of clothing that you have
hung up m ust not interfere wit h the dr iv­
er's view. The coat hooks are designed
only for lightweight clothing. Neve r hang
any clothing with hard, pointed or heavy
objects in the pockets on the coat hooks. During sudden braking or in an accident -
especially if the a irbag is deployed -
these objects could i njure any passen­
ge rs inside the vehicle.

If the engine has been under heavy load
for an extended period, heat builds up in
the engine compartment after the engine
is switched off -there is a risk of damaging
the engine . Allow the engine to run at idle
for about two minutes before switching it
off.

Switching the ignition on/off
If you would like to switch the ignition on
without starting the engine, follow these
steps :
.. Press the
!START ENGIN E STOP! button
without pressing the clutch pedal (for man ­
ual transmissions) or the brake pedal (for
automatic transmiss ions) .
.. To sw itch the ignition off, press the button
again. If
the engine should not start immediately,
the sta rting process is automatically stopped
afte r a short t ime. Repeat start ing procedure.
When sta rting the engine, major elect rical
loads are switched off temporar ily .
After a cold engine is started, there may be a
brief period of increased noise because oil
pressure must first build up in the hydrau lic
valve adjusters . This is norma l and not a cause
for concern .
.&_ WARNING
-
-Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation.
- Never turn off the engine until the vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your veh icle . Otherw ise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equ ipment such as the power windows
could be operated . This can lead to seri­
ous injury .
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle . The
doors can be locked using the remote
tr an smitter, preventing people from es­
caping from the veh icle on their own in
the event of an emergency. Depending
on the time of year, peop le inside the ve­
hicle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatures .

-Avo id high engine rpm, full throttle and
heavy eng ine loads until the engine has
reached operating temperature -other­
wise you risk engine damage.
@ For the sake of the environment
Do not let the engine run while parked to
warm up. Begin driving immediately. This
reduces unnecessary emissions .

-After starting a cold engine, there may
be a brief period of increased noise be-
cause the oil pressure must first build up .,.

- If the engine must remain running, never
have any driving position engaged when
checking under the hood. Make sure the
selector lever has securely engaged and
is locked in P with the parking brake set
¢ page 206. Otherwise, any increase in
engine speed may set the vehicle in mo­
tion, even with the park ing brake ap­
plied.
(D Note
- When stopping on an incline, do not try
to hold the vehicle in place by pressing
the accelerator pedal while a driving gear
is selected. This can cause the transmis­
sion to overheat and can damage it. Acti­
vate the parking brake or press the brake
pedal to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
- Allowing the vehicle to roll when the en­
gine is stopped and the selector lever is
in N will damage the transmission be­
cause it is not lubricated under those cir­
cumstances.
@ Tips
For safety reasons, the park ing brake is re­
leased automatically only when the driv­
er's safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
Hill descent control
Applies to vehicles: with S tronic/tiptronic
The hill descent control system assists the
driver when driving down declines.
Hill descent control is activated when these­
lector lever is in D/S and you press the brake
pedal. The transmi ssion automatically selects
a gear that is suitable for the incline. Hill de­
scent control tries to maintain the speed ach­ ieved at the time of braking, within physical
and technical limitations. It may st ill be nec­
essary to adjust the speed with the brakes. Hill descent contro
l switches off once the de­
cline levels out or you press the accelerator
pedal.
On vehicles with the cruise control system*
¢ page 80, hill descent control is also activat­
ed when the speed is set.
A WARNING
--
Hill descent control cannot overcome
physical limitations, so it may not be able
to maintain a constant speed under all
conditions. Always be ready to apply the brakes .
Manual shift program
Applies to vehicles: with S tronic/tiptron ic
Using the manual shift program you can
manually select gears.

You can change the driving mode when the ve­
hicle is stationary or whi le driving.
If traffic
permits, after changing modes, briefly take
your foot off the accelerator pedal so that the recently selected mode is also activated for
the engine and transmission.
Comfort -provides a comfort-oriented vehicle
setup and is suited for long drives on high­
ways.
Auto -provides an overall comfortable yet dy­
namic driving feel and is suited for every day
u se.
Dynamic -gives the driver a sporty driving
feel and is suited to a sporty driving style .

by the sensors and make the airbag system
deploy in crashes in wh ich it would not deploy
if the changes had not been made. Other
kinds of changes may reduce the force levels
measured by the sensors and prevent the air­
bag from deploying when it should .
The sensors in the safety belt buckle for the
driver and front passenger seat tell the elec­
tronic control module if the safety belt is latched or not. If the safety belt is being used,
the front airbag will deploy at a slightly high­
er rate of vehicle deceleration than if the safe­
ty belt is not being used. Therefo re, in a par­
ticular co llision, it is poss ible that an airbag
will not deploy at a seating position where the
safety belt is being used but will inflate at the position where the safety belt is not being
used.
It is important that nothing interfere
with the safety belt buckles so that the sen­
sors can send the correct information about
safety belt use to the electron ic cont ro l unit.
A WARNING
Changing the vehicle 's s uspension includ­
ing u se of unapproved tire-rim combina­
tions can change Advan ced Airb ag per­
formance and increase the risk of serious
personal in jury in a c rash.
- Never ins tall suspens io n components
that do not have the same performance characteristics as the components origi­
nally insta lled on your vehicle.
- Never use tire- rim combinations that
have not been approved by A udi.

Items stored between the safety belt
buckle and the center console can cause
the senso rs in the buckle to send the
wrong informat ion to the elect ro n ic con­
trol modu le and prevent the Advanced A ir­
bag System from wor king proper ly.
- Always make sure that noth ing can inte r-
fere w ith the safety belt buckles and that
they are not obstructed.
Knee airbags

The knee airbag system can provide supple­
mental protection to properly restrained
front seat occupants .

In addition to their norma l safety function,
safety belts help keep the dr iver or front pas­
senger in position in a fronta l collision so that
the a irbags can provide supplemental protec­
t ion .
The airbag system is not a substit ute for your
safety belt . Rather, it is part of the overa ll oc­
cupant restra int system in your vehicle. Al­
ways remember that the a irbag system can
o nly help to protect you if you are weari ng
your safety belt and wea ring i t proper ly. This
is why you should always wear your safety
b elt, no t jus t be ca use the law requi res you to
do so

The ESC is designed to function in levels . De­
pending on the leve l that is selected, the sta­
b ili zat io n function of the ESC is limited or
switched off. The amount of stabilizat ion con­
trol will d iffe r depend ing on the level.
