Driver information system
Trip computer
Introduction
The trip computer gives you information on cur­
rent and average fuel mileage , average speed ,
fuel range and driving time .

The fo llow ing information is contin uously evalu­
ated by the trip computer and can be d isplayed
sequent ia lly in the instrument cluster display:
Fuel range
The estima ted c ruising range i n miles (km) ap­
pea rs in the disp lay . This te lls you how fa r your
ve hicle w ill be able to trave l on t he current ta nk
of fuel and with the same driv ing style. The d is­
p lay changes in increments of 5 miles (10 km) .
The cruising range is calcu lated based on t he f ue l
consumption for the last 18 m iles (30 km). If yo u
drive conse rvative ly, the cruising range will in­
crease.
Average fuel mileage
The average fuel e co nomy in MPG (l/ 100 k m)
since yo u last cleared the memory appears in this
d is pl ay. You can use this display to ad just your
driving technique to achieve a desired mileage.
Current fuel mileage
The inst antaneo us f ue l cons umption in miles per
ga llon (l/100 km) is shown in this display. Yo u
can use t his disp lay to adjust your driving techni­
que to achieve a des ired mileage .
F ue l cons umption is rec alcul ated at intervals of
33 y ards (30 me ters). Th is disp lay swit ches to
ga llons/hou r (li ters/hour) when the vehicle is not
mov ing.

Average speed
The aver age spee d in mph (km/ h) sin ce you last
rese t the memory appears in the display .
Elapsed time
The length of time that yo u have been d riving
s ince you last reset the memory appears in this
display .
Distance
The distance that has been covered since the last
time the memory was cleared appears i n the dis­
play .

- All stored val ues will be lost if the vehicle
bat tery is disconnected .
Memories
The trip computer is equipped with two fully au ­
tomatic memories as well as an efficiency pro­
gram* .

Single-t rip memory (Trip computer 1 )
The single -t rip memo ry s to res the trip informa­
tion from the t ime the ig nit ion is tu rned on unt il
it is turned
off. If the t rip is con tinued within 2
hour s
from the time the ignition was turned off,
the new data wi ll be included in the calculation of
the current trip information .
If the trip is inter­
rupted for
more than 2 hours the memory is re­
set automat ica lly.
Total -trip memo ry (Trip computer 2 )
Unlike the single-trip memory , the tota l-trip
memory is not reset automatically. This permits
you to evaluate your driving data for the entire
period between manual resets.

Operation
The trip computer is controlled by two switches
on the windshield wiper lever .

Dri ver information s ystem
The trip computer will not ope rate un less the ig ­
nition is on. When you turn o n the ignition, the
f unct ion that was in use when yo u last turned the
ignition
off wi ll be displayed.
In add ition to info rmation about the trip comput ­
er (trip computer 1, 2 and the efficiency pro­
gram *), information about othe r systems can al ­
so be shown in the display. To switch the display betwee n the diffe rent information, tap the
I RESET ! button@ briefly .
Resetting values to zero
"' Select a value in the desired trip compute r or in
the effic iency program *.

least one second . All values in the selected trip
computer or in the eff ic iency program* a re re ­
set to zero .
If the data in tr ip computer 1 are deleted, then
t h e va lues in the eff iciency program* will also be
r eset.
With some vehicle equ ipment levels, the va lues
for the single tr ip or total trip memory can also
be reset i n the Infotai nment system
¢ page 25.

All stored va lues w ill be lost if the veh icle bat­
tery is d isconnected .
Basic Settings for the trip computer
Applies to vehicles: with trip computer
The radio or MM!* operating unit is used for set­
ting the trip computer 's basic settings.

cluster > On -board computer 1 or On-board
computer 2 .
The values in the sing le-tr ip or the total-t rip
memory can all be reset to zero at the same t ime
u nder
Reset in the menu.
In addition, yo u can determi ne what info rmation
from t he trip computer sho uld be shown in the

- The driving information in the efficiency

Gearshift Indicator
Applies to vehicles: with manual transmission and gearsh ift
indicator
This indicator con help conserve fuel.

In order to become familiar with the gearshift in­
d ictor, at first just drive the way you are used to .
If the current gear -and the dr iving situation -is
not the best one for conserving fuel , then the in­
dicator wi ll display the recommended gear . The
d isp lay shows the cu rrent gear and the gear that
is recommended
¢ fig . 12 .
-Up shifting The display will light up to the r ight
of the gear currently se lected if it is recom­
mend ing a h igher gear .
-Dow nshifting : The display will light up to the
left of the gear currently se lected if it is recom­
mend ing a lower gear.
Sometimes the indicator w ill recommend sk ip­
p ing a gear (3
> 5) .
If there is no gearshift recommendation, then
just drive in the appropriate gear for conserving fuel.

(D Note
This indicator can help you conserve fue l. This
i ndicator is not meant to show you which gear
you should always be in in all driving situa­
tions. Sometimes, in situations such as pass­
i ng, driving through mounta ins or when tow­
ing a trailer, there won't be any gearshift rec­
ommendation .
(0 Tips
The display does not light up when the clutch
pedal is be ing depressed.
Efficiency program
Description

T he efficiency program can help you to use less
fuel. It eval uates driving information in reference
to fuel consumpt ion and shows other equ ipment
i nfluencing consumption as well as shift recom­
mendat ions . Fuel economy messages
¢ page 28 provide tips for efficient dr iv ing .
The efficiency program uses distance and con­ sumption data from trip computer

Enhanced shift indicator

The eff ic iency program also has an enhanced
shift indicator. This enhanced shift indicator fol­
lows the same concept as the "standard" shift in­
dicator¢
page 26. The se lected and the recom­
mended gears are highlighted in colors like a
traffic light.
The color of the circle indicates if the most suita­ b le gear is engaged or if you should shift up or
down.

This enhanced shift indicator can help you
conserve fuel. It is not des igned to recom­
mend the correct gear in all driving situations.
Only the drive r can decide which gear is cor­
rect in certain dr iving situations such as when
passing another vehicle, driving on hills or
towing a trailer.

ferent in vehicles with a monochrome dis­

consumption is listed in the efficiency program .
The display shows up to three other items of
equipment @. The equipment using the most
fuel i s listed first. If more than three items using
fuel are switched on, the equipment that is cur­ rently using the most fuel is displayed.
A scale @also shows the current total consump­
tion of all other equipment.

Fuel economy messages are disp layed when fuel
consumption is increased by certain conditions.
If
you follow these fuel economy messages, you can reduce your vehicle 's consumption of fuel. The
messages appear automatically and are only dis ­

Service interval display
T he service interval display reminds you when
your next service is due.

The schedule for the next oi l change or inspec­
tion is ca lculated automatically and disp layed ac­
cord ingly . T he d isp lay works in two stages:
Service r eminder
30 days before the next service is due, a service
reminder appears in the d isp lay when you turn on
the ignit ion

After about 5 second s the display switches back
to norma l. The distance and time remaining are
updated each time the ignit ion is turned on unt il
the date due for service is reached.
Ser vice due
When the due date for service is reached, the
message
Se rvice due! appears in the instrume nt
cluster immed iately after you turn on the igni­
tion. Additiona lly, a warning tone sounds . After
about 5 seconds the d isplay switches back to nor ­
mal.
Calling up the service schedul es
If or when an oil change or inspection is due, can
be shown in the radio or MMI* d isplay by select­
i ng the service interval d isplay in the ca r menu.

Resetting the servic e interval display
Your authorized Audi deale r will reset the corre­
sponding service schedule after performing the
appropria te service on your vehicle. You also have ..,.

the possibility to reset the oi l change schedu le af ­
ter having performed an oil change according to
Audi specif ications. Select
ICARI function button
> Service interval display > Reset oil change in­
terval
or I CAR ! function button > Car systems*
control button > Servicing & checks > Reset oil
change interval.
(D Note
- Only reset the oil change d isp lay when you
have completed an oil change .
- If you d isconnect the battery terminals, no
calculations can be made for the service in­
terval display during this t ime and no serv­
i ce reminder will appear . Remember that
obse rv in g the proper serv ice intervals is vi­
tally impor tant to extending the life of your
vehicle, particularly the engine, and main­
taining its value. Even if the mi leage driven
i s low, the maximum period of one year
from one service to the next must not be ex­
ceeded.
(D Tips
The information in the Service Reminder re­
mains stored even when the veh icle battery is
disconnected.
On Board Diagnostic
System (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ¢-4 in the
instrument cluster is part of the On-Board Diag ­
nostic (OBD II) system.
The warning/indicator light illuminates when the
ignition is switched on and goes out after the en­
gine starts and the idle has stabilized. This indi­
cates that the MIL is working properly.
If the light does not go out after the engine is
started, or illuminates while you are driving, a malfunct ion may exist in the engine system. If
the light illuminates, the catalytic converter
could be damaged.
Continue driving
with reduced power (avoiding
sustained high speeds and/or rapid accelerations)

and have the condition corrected. Contact your

If t he light illuminates, the electronic speed lim­
ite r may also be ma lf u nctioning. For more infor­

An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate ¢

On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board D iagnost ics monitors the components
of your emission control system. Each monito red
component in your engine system has been as­
signed a code. In case of a malfunction, the com­
ponent will be ident ified and the fault stored as a
code in the control module memory.
T he MIL light may also illum inate if there is a
leak in the on-board fuel vapo r recovery system .
If the light illuminates after a refueling, stop the
vehicle and make sure the fuel filler cap is prop­
erly closed
¢ page 188.
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the stor­
ed data can only be displayed using special diag­
nostic equipment (generic scan tool for OBD).
In order to connect the spec ial diagnostic equip­
ment, push the plug into the Data Lin k Connec tor
(DLC). The DLC is located to the right of the hood
release

buzzer sounds as long as t he driver 's door is

between the inside and outs ide. They will
clea r shortly after switching them on. T his
does not affect t he service li fe of the light­

The lever operates the turn signals, the high
b eams and the headlight flasher.

Auto headlights*
When the light swit ch is in the A UTO ¢ page 44
posi tion, the sw itch-on po int of the lights can be
changed in the automatic drivi ng light function.
Daytime running lights
USA models :

on and off .
Canada models:
T he function ca nnot be turned
off . It is activated automatically eac h time the ig­
n ition is switched on.
Travel mode*
The headlight beam is asymmetrical. This pro­
vides stronger illum inat ion on the s ide of the
road on wh ich you a re driving. If you are driving
in a cou ntry that drives o n the opposite side of
the road from your own count ry, this will cause
g lare for oncom ing d rive rs. To prevent glare:
- Travel mode must be selected in vehicles with
Xenon headlights* .
- In veh icles with halogen headlights, certain
areas of the headlight lenses must be covered
with waterproof adhesive cove rs that prevent
l igh t from pass ing t hrough . For more informa ­
tion, ple ase see you r autho rized Aud i dea le r or
a ut ho rized repair facility.

l y if you a re in a n accident w here the airbag has
deployed .

You should turn on the emergency f lashers
when:
-yo u are the last veh icle standing in a t raff ic
jam so that any othe r vehicles com ing can
see you, or when
- yo ur vehicle has broken dow n or you a re in
an eme rgency s ituation, or when
-yo ur vehicle is be ing towed by a tow tru ck or
if yo u are towing a not her vehicle behind
you.

Instrument illumination
The basic brightness of the illumination for the
instruments, the center console and the display
can be adjusted .

• Press the knob to re lease it .
.. Turn the knob toward"-" or "+" to reduce or in­
crease the brightness.
• Press the knob again to return it to its original
position .
@ Tips
The instrument illumination (for dials and
needles) lights on when the ignition is switch­
ed on and the vehicle lights are turned off. As
the daylight fades, the illum ination of the di­
als likewise dims automatically and will go
out completely when the outside light is very
low. This feature is meant to remind you to
switch on the headlights when outside light
conditions become poor.

Adjusting the magnetic zone
Applies to vehicles: with digital compass
The magnetic zone must be adjusted correctly
for the compass to read accurately .

• Press and ho ld the button @~ fig. 51 until the
number of the magnetic zone appears in the
rearview mirror .
• Press the button @repeatedly to select the
correct magnetic zone. The selection mode
turns off after a few seconds .
Calibrating the compass
Applies to vehicles: with digital compass
You must recalibrate the compass if it does not
display the correct direction .
• Press and hold the button @until a C appears
in the rearview mirror.
• Drive in a circle at about 6 mph (10 km/h) until
a direction is displayed in the rearview mirror .
A WARNING
-To avoid endangering yourself and other
drivers, calibrate the compass in an area
whe re there is no traffic.
Lights and Vision
-The digital compass is to be used as a direc­
tional aid only. Even though you may want
to look at it while you are driving, you must
still pay attention to traffic, road and weath­
er conditions as well as other poss ible haz­
ards.
