A WARNING
- The power front seats can also be adjusted
when the ignition is switched off. To reduce
the risk of injury, children should never be left unattended in the vehicle for this rea­
son .
- To reduce the risk of an accident, only adjust
the driver 's seat when the vehicle is station­
ary .
- Exercise caution when adjusting the seat
height. Unsupervised or careless seat ad ­
justment can pinch fingers or hands, which increases the risk of injury.
- The front seat backrests must not be re­
clined too far back when driving, because
this impairs the effectiveness of the safety
be lts and airbag system, which increases
the risk of injury.

Audi pre sense
Introduction
App lies to: vehicles with Audi pre sense
Within the limits of the system, the pre sense
functions can initiate measures in particularly
dangerous situations to protect the vehicle pas­
sengers and other road users.
- Due to the interlinking of various vehicle sys­
tems, critical driving situations can be detected by
pre sense basic and measures for preventa ­
t ive occupant protection are can be initiated .
- The
pre sense front system uses the data from
the adaptive cruise control* radar sensors and
the camera to calculate the probability of a col­
li sion. Within the limits of
the system, an im­
pending collision with vehicles can be detected
in both urban and rural speed ranges. In this
case, the system warns the driver visually,
acoustically and with a jerk on the brakes if nec­
essary. If needed, it can initiat e a partial or full
deceleration to reduce the collision speed or to
avoid the collision under certain circumstances .
I n conjunction with pre sense basic/rear, the
front safety belts are also revers ibly tensioned
when needed . The pre sense front is also active
when adapt ive cruise control* is switched off .
-Pre sense rear contains pre sense basic func­
tions. It uses the data from the side assist* ra­
dar sensors and calcu lates withi n the limits of
the system the probability of a rear end coll i­
sion with the vehicle beh ind you. Pre sense rear
is also active when side assist* is switched
off.
- Within the limits of the system, pre sense city
uses the camera data and can detect an im­
pending collision with vehicles and pedestrians.
In this case, the system warns the dr iver visual­
ly, acoustically and with a jerk on the brakes if
necessary. If needed, it can initiate a full decel­
eration to reduce the collision speed or to avoid

conjunction with pre sense basic/rear, the front

- Certain pre sense functions switch off when driving in reverse.
- The pre sense functions may not be availa­ ble if there is a malfunction in the ESC sys­
tem or the airbag control module.
- Note that the reversible belt tensioner on
the front passenger's side deactivates when
the front passenger's airbag is deactivated .
- Switch the pre sense
off when you a re not
using public streets or when loading the ve­
hicle onto a vehicle carrier, tra in, sh ip or
other type of transportat ion. This can pre­
vent an undesired inte rvention from
the pre
sense system.
Audi pre sense basic
Description
Applies to : vehicles with Audi pre sense basic
The pre sense basic functions are activated at a
speed of approx imately 20 mph (30 km/h) or
higher .
The following functions can be triggered under certain conditions within the limits of the sys­
tem:
- Tensioning of the safety belts (for examp le,
during heavy braking): the front safety belts have reversible belt tensioners . If a collision
does not occur, the safety belts loosen slightly
and are ready to trigger aga in .
- Closing the windows and sunroof* .

greater than the amount being generated in or­
der to maintain an optimal vehicle battery charge
level.
(D Tips
- Energy management cannot overcome the laws of physics. Note that the charge level
and length of the vehicle battery life are
limited.
- When the starting ability is endangered, the

What you should know
Maintaining the starting ability is the highest
priority.
A lot of stress is placed on the vehicle battery
when driving short distances, during city driving,
and at cold times of the year. A lot of energy is
used but little is generated. It is also critical
when the engine is not running but electrical
equipment is switched on. In this case, energy is used but none is generated .
In situations like this, energy management will
actively regulate the distribution of energy.
Long periods without use
If you do not drive your vehicle for several days or
weeks, electrical equipment is gradually scaled
back or switched off. This reduces energy use and
ensures the vehicle will be able to start after long
periods of time. Some convenience functions,
such as interior lighting or power seat adjust­
ment, may not be available under certain circum­
stances . These convenience functions will be
available again once you switch the ignition on
and start the engine.
With the engine switched off
The vehicle battery will drain if you use Infotain ­
ment functions such as listening to the radio
while the engine is switched off .
If the vehicle's ability to start may be impaired by
the energy use, a message will appear in the In­
fotainment system display. The message indi­
cates that the system will switch off automatical-

ly soon. If you would like to continue using the
functions, you must start the engine.
With the engine running
Although electrical energy is generated while
driving , the vehicle battery can drain. This can
happen if little energy is generated but much is
used, and the charge level of the vehicle battery
is not optimal.
To restore the balance of energy, components
that require large amounts of energy are tempo­
rarily scaled back or switched off . Heating sys­
tems in particular require a great deal of energy. If you notice, for example, that the seat heating*
or rear window defogger is not working, then it
has been temporarily reduced or switched off.
T hese systems are available again as soon as the
energy supply has been restored.
In addition, you may notice that the idle speed has slightly increased. That is normal and no
cause for concern . By increasing the idling speed,
the additional required energy will be generated
and the vehicle battery will be charged.

Data Recorder and
vehicle control modules
Event Data Recorder
This vehicle is equipped with an Event Data Re­
corder (EDR). The main purpose of an EDR is to
record, in certain crash or near crash-like situa­
tions, such as an airbag deployment or hitting a
road obstacle, data that will assist in understand­
ing how a vehicle's systems performed. The EDR
is designed to record data related to vehicle dy­
namics and safety systems for a short period of
time , typically 30 seconds or less. The EDR in this
vehicle is designed to record such data as:
- How various systems in your vehicle were oper­ ating;
- Whether or not the driver and passenger safety
belts were buckled/fastened;
- How far (if at all) the driver was depressing the
accelerator and/or brake pedal; and,
.,_

-How fast the vehicle was traveling.
These data can help provide a better understand­ ing of the circumstances in which crashes and in­
juries occur. NOTE : EDR data are recorded by your
vehicle only if a non-trivial crash situation occurs;
no data are recorded by the EDR under normal
driving conditions and no personal data (e.g.,
name , gender, age, and crash location) are re­
corded. However, other parties, such as law en­
forcement, could combine the EDR data with the
type of personally identifying data routinely ac­
quired during a crash investigation.
To read data recorded by an EDR, special equip­ ment is required, and access to the vehicle or the
EDR is needed. In addition to the vehicle manu­
facturer, other parties, such as law enforcement,
that have the special equipment, can read the in­
formation if they have access to the vehicle or the
EDR.
Some state laws restrict the retrieval or down­ loading of data stored by EDRs installed in a vehi­
cle for the express purpose of retrieving data af­
ter an accident or crash event without the own­
er's consent.
Audi will not access the EDR and/or similar data
or give it to others -
-unless the vehicle owner (or lessee if the vehi­
cle has been leased) agrees; or
-upon the official request by the police; or
-upon the order of a court of law or a govern-
ment agency; or
-for the defense of a lawsuit through the judicial
discovery process.
-Audi may also use the data for research about
vehicle operation and safety performance or provide the data to a third party for research
purposes without identifying the specific vehi­
cle or information about the identity of its own­
er or lessee and only after the recorded vehicle
data has been accessed.

Intelligent Technology
These electronic control modules record data
during normal vehicle operation that may be
needed by trained technicians for diagnostic and
repair purposes. The recording capability of these
modules is limited to data (no sound is record­
ed) . Only a small amount of data is actually re­
corded over a very limited period of time, or stor­
ed when a system fault is detected by a control
module . Some of the data stored may relate to
vehicle speed, direction, or braking, as well as re­
straint system use and performance in the event
of a crash. Stored data can also only be read and
downloaded with special equipment that is di­
rectly connected to the vehicle.

Your vehicle may be equipped with Audi con­ nect. Your use of certain Audi connect fea­
tures requires wireless services that are pro­
vided by a third party wireless telecommuni­
cations provider . For details regarding how in­
formation obtained through Audi connect is
collected, processed, transmitted, used, and
shared, please see your contract with the
wireless telecommunications provider and the
"About Audi connect" tab in your vehicle's In­
fotainment system:

While driving, restricted use of unsecured, light,
small wireless devices is only possible from the
rear of the vehicle.
Requirement: the ignition must be switched on.

The MMI Wi-Fi hotspot is deactivated at the fac­

- On: the MMI Wi-Fi hotspot is active and visib le
to other devices . You can connect your Wi-Fi
device to the MMI and use the Internet connec­
tion if necessary .

Internet connection for Wi-Fi devices is not
poss ible.
A WARNING
- To reduce the risk of an accident, use the
Audi connect Infotainment serv ices w ith a
Wi -Fi hotspot on ly in the rea r seat when the

vehicle is in motion, or only when the vehi­
cle is stat ionary.
- It is only safe to use tablets, laptops, mo­
bile devices and other similar devices when
the vehicle is stationary because, like all
loose objects, they could be thrown around
the inside of the vehicle in a crash and cause
serio us injuries . Store these types of devices
securely while driving.
- Do not use any wireless dev ices on the front
seats within range of the airbags while dr iv­
ing. Also read the warnings in the chapte r
¢ page 281, Front airbags.
-As the driver, do not allow usage of the W i­
F i hotspot to distract you from driv ing, as
this cou ld increase the r isk of an accident.

- Under some conditions, certain mobile devi­
ces and ope rating systems may automati­
cally sw itch from your vehicle's Wi-Fi hot­
spot to the device's mobi le da ta connection.
In that event, standard text and data usage
rates would apply whi le the device's mobile

Wi-Fi audio player

Using the Wi-Fi audio player media source on the
MMI, you can connect and operate your Wi-Fi-ca­
pable media player (such as a smartphone) to wirelessly play music from your media player

brary. The media player is connected through the
vehicle's Wi -Fi hotspot. A UPnP Server opp or an
integrated UPnPIDLNA server on your media
player is required to access your media player

brary.

Examples of improper seating positions
The occupant restraint system can only reduce
the risk of injury if vehicle occupants are properly
seated .
Improper seating positions can cause serious in­
jury or deat h. Safety belts can only work when
they are properly positioned on the body . Im­
proper seating positions reduce the effect iveness
of safety belts and w ill even increase the r isk of
i njur y and dea th by moving the safety be lt to crit­
ical areas of the body. Impro per sea ting posit ions
a lso increase the risk of ser ious injury and dea th
when an airbag deploys and strikes an occupant
who is not in the proper seat ing position. A driver
is responsib le for the safety of all vehicle occu­
pants and especially for children. Therefore :
~ Never allow anyone to assume an incorrect
seat ing pos ition when the vehicle is being used

sitions that will increase the risk of serio us inj ury
and death. Our hope is that these examp les will
make you more aware of seating posit ions that
are dangerous.

Important safety instructions
A WARNING
A lways make sure that the knee airbag can in­
flate w ithout interference. Objects between
yourself and the airbag can inc rease the risk
of injury in an accident by interfering with the
way the ai rbag dep loys o r by being pushed in­
to you as the airbag dep loys.
- No persons (ch ild ren) or animals should ride
in the footwell in front of the passenger
seat . If the airbag deploys, this can res ult in
serio us or fat al injuries.
- No objects of any kind should be carried i n
the footwell area in front of the dr iver's or
passenger's seat. Bu lky objects (shopping
bags, for examp le) can hamper or prevent
proper dep loyment of the airbag . Sma ll ob­
jects can be thrown thro ugh the vehicle if
the airbag deploys and injure you or your passengers.

Safe ty belts
What happens to occupants not wearing
safety belts?
In crashes unbelted occupants cannot stop
themselves from flying forward and being in ­
jured or killed. Always wear your safety bel ts!

Unbe lted occupants are not able to resist the tre­
mendous fo rces of impact by holding t igh t or
b racing themselves. Wi tho ut the benefit of safe­
ty restraint systems, the unrestrained occupant
will slam violently into the steering whee l, in ­
strument panel, windsh ield, or whatever else is
in the way ¢

fore the crash .
Never rely on airbags alone for protection. Even
when they deploy, airbags provide only additional
protection. Airbags are not supposed to dep loy in
all k inds of accidents . A lthough your Audi is
equ ipped w ith airbags, all vehicle occupants, in­
cluding the dr iver, must wear safety belts cor­
rectly in o rder to minimize the risk of severe in­
jury or deat h in a cr ash.

Remember too, that a irbags w ill dep loy only
once and that your safety be lts are always there
to offer protection in those acc idents in which
airbags are not supposed to deploy or when they have already deployed. Unbe lted occupants can
also be thrown out of the vehicle where even
more severe or fata l injuries can occur.
It is also important for the rear passengers to
wear safety be lts correctly. Unbelted passengers
in the rear seats endanger not only themselves
but also the driver and other passengers
¢ fig. 237 . In a fronta l col lision they will be
th rown forward v io lently, whe re they can hit and
i njure the dr iver and/or front seat passenger.
Safety belts protect
People think it's possible to use the hands to
brace the body in a minor collision. It's simply
not true!

Safety be lts used p roperly can make a big differ­
ence. Safety belts he lp to keep passengers in
their seats, gradually reduce energy levels ap­
plied to the body i n an accident, and help prevent
the u ncontrolled movement that can cause ser i­
ous injuries . In addition, safety belts reduce the
dange r of be ing th rown ou t of the vehi cle.
Safety belts attach passenge rs to the car and give
them t he benefit of be ing slowed down more
gently or "soft ly" th ro ugh the
"give" in the safety
belts, crush zones and other safety fea tures engi­
neered into today's vehicles. By " absorbing" the
k inetic energy over a longe r per iod of t ime, the
safety belts make the fo rces on the body more
"tolerab le" and less likely to cause injury.

Although these examples are based on a frontal
collision, safety belts can also substantially re­
duce the risk of injury in other k inds of crashes.
So, whether you're on a long trip or just going to
the corner store, always buckle up and make sure
others do, too . Accident statistics show that vehi­
cle occupants properly wearing safety belts have
a lower risk of being injured and a much better
chance of su rviving a n accident. Prope rly using
safety be lts al so greatly increases the ability of
the supplemental ai rbags to do the ir job in a col­
lision. For t his reason, wearing a safety belt is le­
ga lly required in most countr ies including much
of the Un ited States and Canada.
A lthough your Audi is equipped with airbags, yo u
still have to wear the safety belts provided. Front
airbags, for examp le, are activated on ly in some
frontal collis ions. The front airbags are not acti­
vated in all frontal coll is ions, in side and rear col­
lisions, in rollovers or in cases where there is not
enough deceleration through impact to the front
of the vehicle . The same goes for the other airbag
systems in you r Audi . So, always wear your safety
be lt and make sure eve rybody in you r vehicle is
p roperly restrained!

across the strongest bones of your body.

ready for use and are not damaged .
A WARNING
Not wearing safety belts or wearing them im­
properly increases the risk of serious personal
injury and death . Safety belts can work only
when used correctly.
- Always fasten your safety belts correctly be­
fore driving off and make sure all passen­
gers are cor rectly restrained.
- For maximum protection, safety belts must
always be posit ioned properly on the body .
Safet y be lts
- Never strap more than one person, includ­
ing small children, into any belt.
- Never p lace a safety belt
over a child sitting
on your lap.
- Always keep feet in the footwe ll in front of
the seat while the veh icle is being driven.
- Never let any person ride with their feet on the instrument panel or stick ing out the
window or on the seat.
- Never
remove a safety belt while the vehicle
is moving . Doing so will increase your risk of
being injured or killed.
- Never wear be lts twisted .
- Never wear be lts
over rigid or breakable ob -
jects in or on yo ur clothing, such as eye
g lasses, pens, keys, etc ., as these may cause
injury.
- Never a llow safety belts to become dam­
aged by be ing ca ught in door or seat hard­
ware.
- Do not wear the shoulder part of the belt
under your arm or otherwise out of pos ition.
- Several layers of heavy clothing may inter­
fe re with co rrect positioning of be lts and re ·
duce the overall effectiveness of the system.
- Always keep be lt buck les free of anything
that may prevent the buckle from latching
securely.
- Never use comfort clips or devices that cre­
ate slack in the shoulder belt. However, spe­
cial clips may be required for the proper use
of some child restraint systems .
- Torn or frayed safety be lts can tear, and
damaged be lt hardware can break in an acci­
dent. Inspect belts regularly. If webb ing,
b indings, buckles, or retractors are dam­
aged, have belts rep laced by an authorized

- Safety belts that have been worn and loaded
in an accident must be replaced with the
corre ct replacement safety belt by an au­
thori zed Audi dealer. Rep lacemen t may be
necessary
even if damage cannot be clearly
seen . Anchorages that were loaded must al­
so be inspected .
- Never
remove, mod ify, disassemble, or try
to repair the safety belts yourse lf .
