There may be additional indicator lights in the
tachometer @, the speedometer @, the status
line ® and, depending on the instrument clus­
ter, above or below the central
area @.
The following pages will primarily show illustra­
tions of the multi-color analog instrument clus­
ter*. The display and/or position of the element
shown may vary in monochrome instrument clus­
ters or in the Audi virtual cockpit*.
A WARNING
Do not assume the roads are free of ice based
on the outside temperature display. Be aware
that there may be ice on roads even when the
outside temperature is around 41 °F (+S °C)
and that ice can increase the risk of accidents.
(D Tips
-Depending on vehicle equipment, the in­
strument illumination (needles and gauges)
may turn on when the lights are off and the
ignition is switched on. The illumination for
the gauges reduces automatically and even­
tually turns off as brightness outside in­
creases. This function reminds the driver to
turn the low beams on at the appropriate
time.
- You can select the units used for tempera­
ture, speed and other measurements in the
Infotainment
system ¢ page 251.
- If your vehicle is stationary or if you are driv­
ing at very low speeds, the temperature dis­
played may be slightly higher than the ac­
tual temperature outside due to the heat ra­
diating from the engine.
- At temperatures below 41 °F (+S °C), a snowflake symbol appears in front of the
temperature display

Coolant temperature indicator
The coolant temperature display @¢ page 10,
fig. 3 or¢ page 10, fig. 4 only functions when
the ignition is switched on. To prevent engine

damage, please observe the following notes
about the temperature ranges.
Cold range
If only the LEDs at the bottom of the gauge turn
on, the engine has not reached operating tem­
perature yet. Avoid high engine speeds , full ac­
celeration and heavy engine loads.
Normal range
The engine has reached its operating tempera­
ture once the LEDs up to the center of the gauge
turn on. If
the. indicator light in the instru­
ment cluster display turns on, the coolant tem­
perature is too high
¢ page 30.
(D Note
-Auxiliary headlights and other accessories in
front of the cooling-air intake impair the
cooling effect of the coolant. This increases
the risk of the engine overheating during
high outside temperatures and heavy en­
gine load .
- The front spoiler also helps to distribute
cooling air correctly while driving. If the
spoiler is damaged, the cooling effect will
be impaired and the risk of the engine over­
heating will increase. See an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Fa­ cility for assistance .
@ Tips
Diesel engines: due to the high efficiency of
these engines, the engine may not always reach operating temperature in cold outside
temperatures. This is normal and not a cause
for concern .

On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the components
of your em ission control system. Each monitored
component in your eng ine system has been as­
signed a code. In case of a ma lfunction, the com­
ponent will be identified and the fault stored as a
code in the control module memory.
The MI L light may also illuminate if there is a
leak in the on -board fuel vapor recovery system.
If the light illuminates after a refueling, stop the
vehicle and make sure the fuel filler cap is prop­ erly closed (only vehicles with gasoline engine)
c:>page324 .
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the stor­
ed data can only be displayed using special diag­ nostic equipment (generic scan tool for OBD) .
In order to connect the specia l diagnostic equip­
ment, push the plug into the Data Link Connector
(DLC). The DLC is located to the right of the hood
release

Do not use the diagnostic connector for per­
sonal use. Incorrect usage can cause malfunc­
tions, which can increase the risk of a colli­
sion!
Indicator lights
Description
The indicator lights in the instrument cluster
blink or turn on. They indicate functions or mal­
functions.
Messages may appear with some indicator lights.
A warn ing s ignal will sound at the same time.
The indicator lights and messages in the instru­
ment cluster display can be covered by other dis­
plays. To show them again, select the second tab
with the mult ifunct ion steer ing wheel
c:> page 13 .
If there are several malfunctions, you can display
them one at a time using the thumbwheel.
Some indicator lights in the display can display in
several co lors.
it Central indicator light
If the. or d indicator light turns on, check
the message in the instr ument cluster.
Overview
Some indicator lights turn on briefly as a function
check when you sw itch the ignition on. These sys ­
tems are marked with
a./ in the fo llowing tab les.
If one of these indicator lights does not turn on,
there is a malfunction in that system.
Your vehicle has either a monochrome display or
a multicolored display, depending on vehicle
equipment. Some indicator lights appear white
on a monochrome display .
The. or Q central
indicator light turns on at the same time to indi-
cate the priority of these indicator lights.

-If the b rake system indi cator light turns on
together with the ABS and ESC indicato r
lights, the ABS/ESC regu lating function may
be malfunct ion ing. Funct ions that stabilize
the vehicle are no longer available. This
could cause the vehicle to swerve, which in­

indicator light turns on, t he pa rking brake was
set.

dicator light blinks, the b raking force is not build ­
ing up enough o r not building up at a ll. Secu re
the vehicle also by selecting the 1st gear (man ual
transm ission) or select ing the P selector lever po­
s ition (automatic transm ission) . Make sure the
indicator light is off before you start driving .

allow it to cool befo re working in the engine
compa rtment. Always follow the informa­

Aud i dealer or authorized Aud i Serv ice Facility im ­
mediately to have the malfunc tion corrected .

There is a malfunction in the clutch. The engine
torque that can be transferred is reduced. Yo u
may continue driving. Avoid using the clutch in
the future in any way that will p lace a heavy load
on it. For examp le, do not let the clutch rub when
starting on hills, when tow ing a trailer or when
maneuvering the vehicle . The indicato r light
tur ns off once the clutc h is fully operable again.

!;.J [/; Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC)
If the bJ indicator light blinks while driving , the
E SC o r ASR (A nti-Sl ip Regulation) is act ively regu­
l ating .
If the
bJ ind icator light turns on, the system has
switched the ESC off. In t his case, you can switch
t h e ign it io n off and then on to swi tch the ESC on
again. The indicator light t urns off when the sys­
tem is functioning fu lly.
If
the . indicator light turns on, ESC was
swi tched off using the

Stabi liz ation contro l (ESC /ABS ): malfunction !

If the G1 ind icator light and the ~ (USA mod­
els),11J (Canada models) ABS indicator light turn
o n and the message appears, there is a malfunc­
tion in the ABS o r the e lectronic diffe rentia l lock .
This also causes the ESC to malfunction. The
br akes st ill func tion wi th the ir normal power, bu t
ABS is not active .

turns on when the ignition is switched o n.
I f the indicator light does not turn on or b links
while driving , there is an eng ine control malfunc ­
tion .
Immediately drive slowly to an authori zed Aud i
dealer or authorized Aud i Serv ice Facility to have
the malfunction co rrected .
o Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL)
The malfunction indicato r lamp (MIL) is part of
the On -Board Diagnostic System (OBD II). The Cockpit overview
('4 ,;ymbol turns on when the
ignition is switched
on and turns off again once the engine is started
and running at a steady idle speed. This indicates
that the MIL is function ing correctly.
T he indicator light turns on if there is a malfunc­
tion in the engine electronics. See an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Fac ility to
have the malfunction corrected . For additional

,m,, Diesel particulate filter

II Particulate filter : malfunction! See owner's
manual
T he diese l particulate filter requires regenera­
tion . To support the filter 's self-cleaning func­
tion:
Drive for approximately 15 minutes at a mini ­
mum of 37 mph (60 km/h) in 4th or 5th gear
(manua l transmission) or in the S selector lever
position (automatic transmission). Keep the en­
gine speed at approximately 2,000 RPM . The
temperature increase that will result from th is
can burn off the soot in the filter . The ind icator
light will turn off when the cleaning has complet­
ed successfully .
If the indicator light does not turn off, drive im­
med iate ly to an authori zed Audi dealer or author­
ized Audi Service Facility to have the malfunct ion
corrected .
