ther with a red symbo l (pr iority 1 -Dan­
ger!) or with a yellow symbol (pr iority 2 -
Warn ing).
Overview
Some ind icator lights turn on briefly to check
the function of that system when you switch
the ignition on. These systems are ma rked
with an./ in the fo llow ing tab les. If one of
these indicator lights does not turn on, there is a malfunction in that system.
Red indicator lights
Red symbols indicate a prio rity malfunction -
D anger!
- Pull off the road.
- Stop the vehicle.
-Turn off the engine.
- Check the ma lf u nctioning system . Contact
your authorized Audi dea ler or a qualified
workshop for assistance.

BRAKE /( (f) ) Brake system
The light i lluminates when the ignition is
switched on . It goes o ut after the engine has
been started. This indicates that the brake
warning light is functioning properly .
If the brake warn ing light does not light up
when the engine is cranking , there may be a

sage appears, there is a malfunction in the
adapt ive light system . The headlights still

For safety reasons the low beams are turned
on permanent ly w ith the switch in
AUTO .
However , you can continue to turn the ligh ts
on an d off using the light swi tc h. Y ou can still

t h e rai n sens or throug h the win dshi eld wipe r
l eve r.

¢ Q Turn signals
The indicator light blinks when you use either
turn signal .
Whenever yo u use the left B o r th e right rl
turn s ignal , the indicator light blinks. Whe n
you use the emergency flas he rs, both indica­
tor lights flash .
If one of the turn signa l light bulbs b urn o ut,
the turn signal w ill blink twice as fast as nor ­
mal. Carefu lly dr ive to your aut horized Aud i
dealer immed iate ly to have th e malfu nction
cor rected. The indicator lig ht does not indi­
cate a m alfu nction if a tur n signal on t he tra il­
er o r on the veh icle fails in trail er t ow ing
mode .

A WARNING

temperature display to determ ine if a
road surface is icy or not. Keep in m ind
that road surface s, espec ia lly br idg es
a nd overpa sses, co uld be ice co ve red and
slippe ry even at a n o utside tempe rat ure
above 41 ° F (+ S °C).
- Always remember, even if the "snow­
f la ke" sym bo l (ice warning) does not ap ­
pear in t he dis play, black ice cou ld be on
the road.
- Always red uce your spee d an d drive with
special care in cold weathe r cond itions
when t he chance of enco untering icy
road surfaces increases.

- At tempe ra tu res below 14 ° F (+ 5 °C ) a
snowfla ke symbol a ppears ahead of the
temperat ure display . It is intended to re­
mind the driver to pay special attention
to
ice on the road c> .&. . If the vehicle is
stationa ry, or if you a re driving at a very
low speed, the temperature shown in the
display might be slightly higher than the
actual ou ts ide temperature. This is
c au sed by the heat bei ng r adia ted fro m
th e engine.

Display content
In the MMI, you c an specify which informa tion
shoul d be displayed :
- Cru ise cont ro l system*
- Nav igat ion information *
- Audi adaptive cruise control*
- Night vision assistant* (pedestrian warning)
The speed display and some of the red indica­
tor lights cannot be hidden in the MMI.
Display brightness
You can adjust the display b rightness in t he
M MI. The display bright ness decreases auto­
mat ic all y as the amo unt of light decreases.
The basic leve l of bright ness is adjusted with
the instrument illumination ¢

the Head -up Display, do not place any ob ­
jects i n the projection opening.

- S ung lasses w ith pol ariza tion filters an d

ca lly and assigne d to the remote cont ro l
key that you are using .

On-Board Diagnostic
system (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction In dicator Lamp (MIL) I! in
the instrument cluster is part of the On-Board
Diagnostic (OBD II) system.
The warning/indicator light illumina tes when
the ign ition is switc hed o n and goes o ut afte r
the engine starts and the idle has stab ilized .
This indicates that the MIL is working proper­
ly .
If the light does not go out after t he e ngine
is started, or illuminates wh ile you are dr iv­
i ng, a mal funct ion may exist in the eng ine sys ­
tem . If the light illuminates, t he catalytic con­
verter could be damaged .
Contin ue driving
with reduced power (avo id­
i ng s ustained high speeds and/o r rap id accel ­
erations) and have the cond ition corrected.

If the light i llum inates, the e lectronic speed
li miter may also be mal funct ion ing. Fo r more

An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate

On-Board Diagnostics

On- Boa rd Di agnost ics monitors the compo ­
nents of your emissio n contro l system . Each
monitored component in your engine system
has been ass igned a code. In case of a mal­
funct ion, the component will be identified
and t he fault stored as a code in the control
modul e memo ry.
The MIL light may also illuminate if there is a leak in the on-board fuel vapor recovery sys·
tem. If the light illumi nates afte r a refu elling,
stop the vehicle a nd make sure the fuel fille r
cap is prope rly closed ¢
page 217.
In order to make a n accurate diagnosis, the
stored data can o nly be displayed using spe­
c ial d iagnost ic equipment (generic scan tool
fu rOBD) .

The cruise control system makes it possible to
drive at a constant speed starting at 20 mph
(30 km/h).

Head-up Display* .
The speed is kept constant via an engine out­
put adjustment or active brake intervention.
A WARNING
-- Always pay attention to traffic even when
the cruise control is switched on. You are always responsible for your speed and
the distance between your vehicle and
other veh icles.
- For safety reasons, the cruise contro l
should not be used in the city, in stop­
and-go traffic , on twisting roads and
when road condit ions are poor (such as
ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and hydro­
p laning) - risk of accident.
- Turn off the cruise control temporarily
when entering turn lanes, highway exit
lanes or in construction zones.
- Please note that inadvertently "resting"
your foot on the accelerator pedal causes the cruise control not to brake. This is
because the cruise control is overridden
by the driver's acceleration.
- If a brake system malfunction such as
overheating occurs when the cruise con­
trol system is switched on, the braking
function in the system may be switched
off. The other cruise control functions re­
main active as long as the indicator light
mmJI (US models)/ . (Canadian mod­
els) is on.
(D Tips
The brake lights illuminate as soon as the
brakes decelerate automatically .
Changing speed
Applies to vehicles: w ith cruise co ntrol
• Press lever in the 0 or 0 direct ion
~ page 76, fig. 75 to increase or decrease
your speed .
• Release the lever to save that speed.
Change speed in increments of 1 mph (1 km/
h) by lightly pressing the lever . If you keep the
lever pressed down, you will alter your speed
in 5 mph (10 km/h) increments.
You can also press the accelerator pedal down
to increase your speed, e.g . if you want to .,..

pass someone. The speed you saved ea rlier
will resume as soon as you release the acceler­
ator peda l.
I f, however, yo u exceed your saved speed by
6 mph (10 km/h) for longer than 5 min utes,
the cruise contro l will turn off temporarily.
The green symbol

but the saved speed remains the same.
Presetting your speed

You con preset your desired speed while the
vehicle is not moving.
~ Switch on the ignition.

~ Press the lever in the 0 or 0 direction to
i ncrease or decrease your speed.
~ Release the lever to save that speed.
This funct ion makes it possible, for example,
to save the speed you want before driving on
the highway . Once on the highway, activate
the c ruise control by pull ing t he lever towa rd
(D .
Switching the system off

Adaptive cruise control
and braking guard
Introduction
Applies to vehicles: with adaptive cruise co ntrol
The adaptive cruise control system assists the
driver by regulating vehicle speed and helping
to maintain a set distance to the vehicle
ahead, within the limits of the system . If the
system detects a moving vehicle up ahead,
adaptive cruise control can brake and then ac­
celerate your vehicle . This helps to make driv ­
ing more comfortable both on long highway
stretches and in stop -and-go traffic.
Aud i braking guard can warn you about an im­
pending collision with a vehicle up ahead that
is slower or has slowed down and start slow­
ing your vehicle down with the brakes

Adaptive cruise control and Audi braking
guard have technical limitations that you
must know, so please read this section care­
fully, understand how the system works and
use them properly at all times.

The areas that contain the radar and ultrason­

must never be covered by stickers, or other
things or coated with dirt, insects, snow or ice
that will interfere with the Adaptive cruise
control system and Audi braking guard . Re­
move snow with a hand brush and remove ice with a de-icing spray that does not contain
solvents.
The function of the Adaptive cruise control
system and Audi braking guard is limited un­
der some conditions.
- Objects can only be detected when they are
within sensor range

- The system has a limited ability to detect
objects that are a short d istance ahead, off
to the side of your vehicle or moving into
your lane from the front or moves into your
lane from the side.
-When driving through curves

- Some kinds of vehicles are hard to detect;
for examp le motorcycles, vehicles with high
ground clearance or overhanging loads may
be detected when it is too late or they may
not be detected at all.
- Stationary objects

A WARNING
Improper use of the adaptive cruise con­
trol can cause collisions, other accidents
and serious personal injury. -
-Never let the comfort and convenience
that adaptive cruise control and Audi
braking guard offer distract you from the
need to be alert to traffic conditions and
the need to remain in full control of your
vehicle at all times,
- Always remember that the adaptive
cru ise control and Audi braking guard
have lim its -they will not slow the vehi­
cle down or maintain the set distance
when you drive towards an obstacle or
something on or near the road that is not
moving, such as vehicles stopped in a
traffic jam, a stalled or disabled vehicle.
If registered by the radar sensors, vehi­
cles or obstacles that are not moving can
trigger a collision warning and if con­
firmed by the video camera, an acute col­ lision warning.
- Always remember that the adaptive
cruise control cannot detect a vehicle
that is driving towards you in your traffic
lane and that it cannot detect narrow
