ly briefly -always take the ignition key
with you. This applies particularly when
children remain in the vehicle. Otherw ise
the ch ildren could start the engine or op­
erate electrical eq uipment (e.g. power
windows). The power windows are func­
t io nal until the d river's doo r or passeng­
er's door has been opened.
- Be careful when closing the windows.
Check to see that no one is in the way, or
serious injury could result!

After the ig nition has been switched off,
t he wi ndows can still be opened or closed
for about 10 minutes. The power w indows
are not switched off until the dr iver's door

What to do after a malfunction
The one-touch open and close function must
be reactivated if the battery has been discon­
nected .

Daytime running lights
USA models:
You can switch the dayt ime run­

on and off .
Canada models :
The function cannot be
turned off . It is activated automatically each
time the ignition is switched on. This menu
item is shown "greyed out" .
Coming home, Leaving home
The coming home function illuminates the
area outside the vehicle when you switch the
ignition off and open the driver's door. To turn
the function on, select
Lights when leaving
car > On .
The leaving home function illuminates the
area outside the vehicle when you un lock the
vehicle. To turn the funct ion on, select
Lights
when unlocking car > On .
The coming home and leaving home functions
only operate when it is dark and the light
switch is in the
AUTO position.

Turn signals and high beam lever
The lever on the left side of the steering col­
umn is used to operate the turn signals and
the high beam as well as the headlight flash­
er.

the rear, the head restraints should be pushed
down completely when the rear seats are not

seat. Install the head restraint again im­
mediately once the child seat is removed.
Driving without head restra ints or with
head restraints that are not properly ad­
justed increases the risk of serious or fa­
tal neck injury dramatically .

Seat memory
Description
Ap plies to vehicles: with memo ry function
The memory function allows you to quickly
and easi ly sto re and recall personal seating profiles for
the driver and front passenger*.
The memory function is operated through the
master key and the memory buttons in the
driver's/front passenger's* doors.
T he driver's seating profile is stored and as ­
signed to the master key each time the vehicle
is locked . The seating profile is reca lled auto­
matically when the vehicle is unlocked. If two
people use one vehicle, it is recommended
that each person always uses "their own" master key .
Two seating profiles can be stored in each of
the driver's/front passenger's* doors. Once
stored, these seating profiles can be recalled at any time.

- Use only soft cups in the cupholder. Hard
cups and glasses can cause injury in an
accident .
- Never use the cupholder or adapter as an
ashtray- risk of fire.

Only drink containers with lids should be
carried in the cupholder. Liquid could spill
out and damage your vehicle's electronic
equipment or stain the upholstery, etc.
Cooled glove compartment
Ap plies to vehicles: with coole d glove compa rtm ent
The cooled glove compartment only functions
when the AIC system is switched on.

ment cover closed while driving to reduce

Additional storage
Ther e are a variety of storage compartments
and fasteners in various places in the vehicle.
- Storage compartments in the doors
- Compartment in the glove compartment
(cooled*) . The glove compartment can be
locked using the mechanical key

-Storage compartment for (sun)glasses* in
the roof (near the interior mirror)
- Storage compartments under the center
armrests
- Storage compartment on the rear side of
the front seat* . The compartment can hold a
maximum weight of 1 kg .
- Compartments* on the back of the front
seat backrests
- Garment hooks on the sides of the pillars in
the rear of the vehicle and in the rear grab
handles
- Compartment in the rear center armrest
- Two mounting hooks* under the base of the
rear window inside the luggage compart­
ment. You can attach light objects to these
hooks . The mounting hooks are spring -load­
ed and will return to their normal position
when not in use.
_& WARNING
- Always remove objects from the instru­
ment panel. Any items not stored could
slide around inside the vehicle while driv­
ing or when accelerating or when apply­
ing the brakes or when driving around a
corner.
- When you are driving make sure that
anything you may have placed in the cen­
ter console or other storage locations
cannot fall out into the footwells. In case
of sudden braking you would not be able
to brake or accelerate.
- Always keep the lid of the compartment
for (sun)glasses* closed while driving to
reduce the risk of injury during a sudden
braking maneuver or in the event of an
accident.

latched so that the safety belt of the cen ­

help protect the occupant.
- The backrest must be securely latched in
position so that no items contained in
the luggage compartment can slide for­
ward upon sudden braking .
-Always check whether the latch is fully
engaged by p ulling the seatback for­
ward .
- Never allow safety belts to become dam­
aged by being caught in door or seat
hardware .
- Torn or frayed safety belts can tear and
damaged belt hardware can break in a
c rash . Inspect the be lts periodically .
Belts showing damage to webbing, bind­
ings, b uckles, or retractors mus t be re­
placed .
W Note
- If you move the front sea t back when the
r ear seat bac krest is fo lded fo rward, yo u
could damage the head restraints on t he
r e ar seat.
- Slide the belt guide on th e outside safety
b elt all the way up before folding the
ba ckrest b ack fo rward. Make su re the
seat belt is no t pinched or dam aged
when the rear seat backrest if folded back . Other objects shou ld be removed
from the rear seat bench to protect the
seatback from damage.
Tie-downs and cargo net
The cargo net* prevents small objects from
sliding .

In a collision, the laws of physics mean that
even smaller items that a re loose in the vehi­
cl e w ill turn in to heavy m iss iles tha t ca n cause
serious injury. Items in the veh icle p ick up ki­
ne tic energy which varies with the vehicle and
the weight of the item . Vehicle speed is the
most sign ificant factor.
F o r ex ample, in a fro nta l collision at a speed
of 30 mph (48 km/h), the forces acting on a
10 -lb (5 kg) object are abo ut
20 times the
norma l weight of the item. This means that
the weight of the item wou ld sudden ly be the
equivalent of about 200 lbs (90 kg) . One can
easily imagi ne the injuries that an item of that
weight flying freely through the passenger ..,.

After a cold engine is started, the re may be a
brief period of increased noise because oil
pressure must first bu ild up in the hydraulic
va lve adjusters. This is normal and not a cause
f or concern.
If the engine should not start immediately,
the starting process is automatically stopped
after a short time . Repeat starting procedure.
Start-Stop-S ystem *:
When you stop and the Start-Stop-System*
turns
off the engine, the ignition still remains
switched on.
- If you press the I STAR T ENGINE STOPI but­
ton now, the ignition wi ll be switched
off.

Sw itching the ignition /engine off

The fo llow ing applies to vehicles with Start­
Stop -System*: to prevent the battery from
draining, the ignition and the engine wi ll

off automatically under the following
conditions :
- T he vehicle has already been dr iven.
- T he d river's door is opened.
- T he driver's seat be lt is removed.
- The brake pedal is not pressed down .
- The veh icle is sta tionary.
In t his case, the activated low beam w ill be re­
p laced by the side marker lights. The side
marker lights will switch
off after a certain pe­
riod of time or when you lock the vehicle.

ways swi tch off the ignit io n if you a re leav ing

The steering locks when you turn the engine
off using the I S TAR T ENGINE STOP I button
and open the d river 's door. The locked steer­
ing helps prevent vehicle theft.
A WARNING
- Never allow the engine to ru n in confined
spaces -dange r of asphyxiation .
- Never turn
off the eng ine until the vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop .
- The brake booster and power steer ing
only work when the engine is running . If
the engine is
off, you have to use more
force when steering or braking . Because
you cannot stee r and brake as you usua l­
ly wou ld, this could lead to crashes and
serious injur ies.

- Avoid high eng ine rpm , fu ll th rottle and
heavy engine loads unti l the engine has
r eached operating temperat ure -ot her­
wise yo u risk eng ine dam age.
- The eng ine cannot be sta rted by pushing
or tow ing the veh icle.

If necessary, the engine can be switched off
with the selector lever in the R or D/S posi­
t ion . The eng ine stops if you press the

6 mph (10 km/h) and press the b rake peda l.

cle has come to a complete stop .
