BRAKE /C©) B rake system
The light illum inates when the ignit ion is switch­
ed on . It goes out after the engine has been
started . T hi s indicates that the brake war ning
light is f unction ing p roperly.
If the brake warning light does not light up
when the engine is crank ing, there ma y be a
malfun ction in the elec tri cal sy stem. In this
ca se , contact your Audi deal er.
If the brake system warn ing/ indicator light turns
on, there is a brake system malfunction.

while dri ving , the emergency braking functio n
may not be available. It may not be possible to
set the parking brake or re lease it once it has

nal is also given.
A WARNING
- Always observe the warnings in
c::> page 216, before open ing the hood and
checking the brake fluid .
- Dr iving with low brake fluid is a safety haz­
ard . Stop the car and get profess ional assis -
tance .

-If the 1111 (USA models) . (Canada mod­
els) brake system indicator light turns on to­
gether with the ABS and ESC indicator
lights, the ABS/ESC regulating function may
have failed. Functions that stabilize the ve­
hicle are no longer available . This could
cause the vehicle to swe rve and increase the
risk of sliding. Drive carefully to the nearest
authorized Audi dealer or other qualified
workshop and have the ma lfunction correct ­
ed.
- If the brake warn ing/ indicator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the park­
ing brake is re leased, or lights up while you
are driving, the flu id level in the brake fluid
reservoir is too low. If you believe that it is
safe to do so, proceed immediately at low
speed to the nearest authorized Audi dealer
or qualified repair facility and have the brake system inspected.
- Always keep in mind that after several brake
applications, you will need greater pressure
on the brake pedal to stop your vehicle. Do
not rely on strained brakes to respond w ith
maximum stopping power in critical situa­
tions . You must allow for increased braking
distances. The extra distance used up by
fading brakes could lead to an accident.
PARK /(® ) Electromechanical parking brake
The warning/indicator light monitors the elec ­
tromechanical parking brake.
If the indicator light- (USA models)/ .
(Canada models) turns on, the parking brake was
set .

If the indicator light blinks and the message ap­
pears, the re is not enough brak ing power to keep
the vehicle from ro lling. The brakes have over­
heated. The vehicle could roll away even on a
sma ll incline.

ca lly if the d river 's safety belt is fastened .
Ill Parking brake!
If the liJ indicator light turns on and this mes ­
sage appears, there is a parking brake malfunc­
t ion. Drive to your authorized Audi dealer or
qualified workshop immediately to have the mal­
funct ion corrected .
_L Engine cooling system malfunction
A malfunction in the engine cooling system must
be repaired as soon as possible .

If the indicator light turns on and the message
appears, the coolant temperature is too high or
the coolant level is too low.

Carefully drive at a maximum speed of 35 mph
(60 km/h) to your authorized Audi dealer or
qualified workshop to have the malfunction cor­
rected.
• Air su spen sion : Service mode. Vehicle can

LIi Air suspen sion : S ys tem fault
There is a system malfunct io n that ca n result in
restricted drivi ng stability or reduced ground
clearance.
Drive to an authori zed Aud i dea ler or authori zed
Aud i Serv ice Facility immediately to have the
malfunct io n corrected.
LIi Air suspe nsion : Vehicle too low Ground
clearance reduced
The ground clearance is very low due to a system
malfunct ion . Wa it until the air suspension sys­
tem has restored norma l ground clea rance. Oth­
erwise, conditions such as an uneven road surface
can lead to vehicle damage.
ii !f Safety systems
The II (USA models) tfll (Canada models) indi­
cator light monito rs the safety systems (e.g. air­
bags, pretensioners) and illuminates for a few
seconds each time you switch the ignition on.
If t he
II (U SA models)/ E,I (Canada models) in­
d icator light does not go out, or if it i llum inates
while you are d riving, or if i t starts to blink , then
there is a ma lfunction somewhere in the system.
If the light does not ill uminate when you switch
the ign ition on, this also means there is a ma l­
function.
A WARNING
If you have a malfunction in the safety sys­
tems, contact your authorized Audi dealer im­
mediately. Othe rw ise the safety systems may
not work properly in an acc ident .

L'h Brake booster
D Brake servo : limited functiona lity . You can

There is a malfunction in the brake booster. The
brake booste r is ava ilab le, but its effectiveness is
r educed. Bra king behavior may be different from
how it normally f un ct ions and the br ake pedal
may vibrate .
D rive to an authorized Audi dealer or authorized
Audi Se rvice Facil ity immed iate ly to have the
malfunction cor rec ted .
;;.I C; Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC)
If the bJ indicator light blinks while driving, the
ESP o r ASR (anti-slip regu lation) is actively regu­
l ating .
If the
bJ ind icator light turns on, the system has
switched the ESC off. In th is case, you can switch
the ignition off and then on to switch the ESC on again. The indicator light t urns off when the sys ­
tem is functioning fully .
If the
II ind icator light turns on, ESC was
switched off using the
I~ O FFI button

cle to swerve and increase the risk of sliding.
Drive carefully to the nearest authorized Audi

ABS /C8) Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL).
The warning/indicator light~ (USA models)/
KG» (Canada mode ls) will come on for a few sec­
onds when the ignition is switched on. The light
will go out after an automatic check sequence is
completed .
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The warning/indicator light does not illuminate
when you switch the ign ition on .
- Th e warning/indicator light does not go out af­
ter a few seconds .
- The warning/indicator light illuminates while
driving.
The ESC indicator light also illuminates if the re is
a ma lf u nction in the ABS. The message

tion control (ESC/ ABS): Fault! See owner's
manual
also appears in the instrument cluster
disp lay and a warning tone sounds.
The brake system will still respond even with­
out the assistance of the ABS system. See your
authorized Audi dealer as soon as possible to re­
store full braking performance.

Malfunction in the brake system
I f the brake warning light¢ page 14 and the ABS
warn ing illuminate together there may be a mal­
function in the ABS, and there may also be a ma l­
function in the brake system itself

Malfunction in the electronic differential
lock (EDL)
The EDL works together with the ABS . The ABS
warning light will come on if there is a malfunc­
tion in the EDL system

thorized Aud i dealer as soon as possible .
A WARNING

-If the ~ (USA models)/ 11] (Canada mod-
els) warning light does not go out, or if it
comes on while dr iv in g, the ABS system is
not working properly. The veh icle can then
be stopped only with the standard brakes
(without ABS). You will not have the protec ­
tion ABS provides . Contact your Audi dea ler
as soon as possible.
- USA models: If the
11111 warning light, the
D.J warning light and the~ warning light
come on together, the rear wheels could
lock up first under hard braking. Rear wheel
lock-up can cause loss of vehicle control and
an accident . Have your vehicle repaired im­
mediately by your author ized Audi dealer or
a qualified workshop. Drive slowly and avoid
sudden, hard brake applications.
- Canada models:
If the brake warn ing light

--Never rely exclusively on the outside tem­
perature display to determine if a road sur­
face is icy or not. Keep in mind that road
surfaces, especially bridges and overpasses,
could be ice covered and slippery even at an
outside temperat ure above 41 °F (+S °C).
- Always remember, even if the "snowflake"
symbol (ice warning) does not appear in the
d isp lay, black ice could be on the road.
- Always reduce your speed and drive with specia l care in co ld weather conditions when
the chance of encountering icy road surfaces
increases .
(0 Tips
- If the vehicle is stationary, or if you are driv­
ing at a very low speed, the temperature
shown in the display might be slightly high­
er than the actual outside temperature . This
is caused by the heat being radiated from
the engine . .,..

cannot overcome the laws of physics. In cor­
ners and when road or weather conditions are
bad, a full brake applicat ion can cause the ve­
hicle to s kid or the rea r end to break away,

Start-Stop-System
Description
Applies to vehicles: with Sta rt-Stop-System
T he Sta rt-Stop -System can help increase fuel
economy and reduce CO2 emissions .
I n Start -Stop mode , the eng ine sh uts
off auto ­
mat ica lly when the veh icle is stopped , such as at
a traffic light. The ignition remains switched on
during this stop phase. The eng ine will restart
automatically when needed.
Vehicles with 6 -cylinder-eng ine: The Start-Stop­
System is a utomatically activated each time you
switch on the ignit ion.
Vehicles with 4-cylinder -eng ine, 5-mode l: Th e
l ast Start -Stop-System setting will be restored
when the ignition is switched on .
Basic requirements for Start -Stop mode
- T he driver's door is closed.
- T he driver' seat belt is la tched .
- The hood is closed .
- The veh icle must have been dr iven faster than
2.5 mph (4 km/h) since the last stop .
- A tra iler is not hitched to t he vehicle.

-Never place or install floor mats or other
floor coverings on top of already installed
floor mats. Additional floor mats and other
coverings will reduce the size of the pedal
area and interfere with the pedals .
- Always properly reinstall and secure floor
mats that have been taken out for cleaning.
- Always make sure that objects cannot fall
into the driver footwell while the vehicle is
moving . Objects can become trapped under
the brake pedal and accelerator pedal caus­ ing a loss of veh icle control.
Storing cargo correctly
Loading the luggage compartment
All luggage and other objects must be properly
stowed and secured in the luggage compart­
ment.
L oose items in the luggage compartment can
shift suddenly, changing vehicle handling charac­
teristics. Loose items can also increase the risk of
serious personal injury in a sudden vehicle ma­
neuver or in a collision.
.. Distribute the load evenly in the luggage com­
partment.
.. Always place and properly secure heavy items in
the luggage compartment as far forward as
possible.

.,. Make sure that the rear seatback is securely
latched in place.
A WARNING
Improperly stored luggage or other items can
fly through the vehicle causing serious per­
sonal injury in the event of hard braking or an
accident. To help reduce the risk of serious
personal injury:
- Always put objects, for example, luggage or
other heavy items in the luggage compart­
ment.
- Always secure objects in the luggage com­
partment using the tie-down hooks and
suitable straps.
Driving safety
A WARNING
Heavy loads will influence the way your vehi­
cle handles. To help reduce the risk of a loss
of control lead ing to serious personal injury:
- Always keep in mind when transporting
heavy objects, that a change in the center of
gravity can also cause changes in vehicle handling:
- Always distribute the load as evenly as
possible .
- Place heavy objects as far forward in the
luggage compartment as possible.
- Never exceed the Gross Axle Weight Rating
or the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating specified
on the safety compliance sticker on the left
door jamb. Exceeding permissible weight
standards can cause the vehicle to slide and handle differently.
- Please observe information on safe driving
¢page 125.
A WARNING
To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas from
being drawn into the vehicle, always keep the
rear lid closed while driving .
- Never transport objects larger than those
f itting completely into the luggage area be­
cause the rear lid cannot be fully closed.
- If you absolutely must drive with the rear lid open, observe the following notes to reduce
the risk of poisoning:
- Close all windows,
- Close the power roof*,
- Open all air outlets in the instrument pan-
el,
- Switch off the air recirculation,
- Set the fresh air fan to the highest speed .
A WARNING
Always make sure that the doors, all win­
dows , the power roof* and the rear lid are se­
curely closed and locked to reduce the r isk of
in jury when the vehicle is not being used.
- After closing the rear lid, always make sure

Why use safety belts?
Frontal collisions and the law of physics
Frontal crashes create very strong forces for peo­
ple riding in vehicles .

~ ± The physical principles are simple. Both the vehi­
cle and the passengers possess energy which var ­
ies with vehicle speed and body weight. Engi­
neers call this energy "kinetic energy."
The higher the speed of the vehicle and the
greater the vehicle's weight, the more energy
that has to be "absorbed" in the crash.
Veh icle speed is the most significant factor.
If
the speed doubles from 15 to 30 mph (25 to SO
km/h), the energy increases 4 times!
Because the passengers of this vehicle are not us­
ing safety belts ¢
fig. 146, they will keep mov ing
at the same speed the vehicle was moving just
before the crash, until something stops them -
here, the wall ¢

The same principles apply to people sitting in a
vehicle that is involved in a frontal collision. Even
at city speeds of 20 to 30 mph (30 to SO km/h),
the forces acting on the body can reach one ton
Safety belts
(2,000 lbs, or 1,000 kg) or more . At greater
speeds, these forces are even higher.
People who do not use safety belts are also not

they will also keep moving forward at the speed
their vehicle was travelling just before the crash.
Of course, the laws of physics don't just apply to
frontal collisions, they determine what happens in all kinds of accidents and collisions.
What happens to occupants not wearing
safety belts?
In crashes unbelted occupants cannot stop
themselves from flying forward and being in­
jured or killed . Always wear your safety belts!

Unbelted occupants are not able to resist the tre­
mendous forces of impact by holding tight or
bracing themselves . Without the benefit of safe­
ty restraint systems, the unrestrained occupant
will slam viol ently into the steering wheel, in­
strument panel, windshield , o r whatever else is
in the way
