-If the 1111 (USA models) . (Canada mod­
els) brake system indicator light turns on to­
gether with the ABS and ESC indicator
lights, the ABS/ESC regulating function may
have failed. Functions that stabilize the ve­
hicle are no longer available . This could
cause the vehicle to swe rve and increase the
risk of sliding. Drive carefully to the nearest
authorized Audi dealer or other qualified
workshop and have the ma lfunction correct ­
ed.
- If the brake warn ing/ indicator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the park­
ing brake is re leased, or lights up while you
are driving, the flu id level in the brake fluid
reservoir is too low. If you believe that it is
safe to do so, proceed immediately at low
speed to the nearest authorized Audi dealer
or qualified repair facility and have the brake system inspected.
- Always keep in mind that after several brake
applications, you will need greater pressure
on the brake pedal to stop your vehicle. Do
not rely on strained brakes to respond w ith
maximum stopping power in critical situa­
tions . You must allow for increased braking
distances. The extra distance used up by
fading brakes could lead to an accident.
PARK /(® ) Electromechanical parking brake
The warning/indicator light monitors the elec ­
tromechanical parking brake.
If the indicator light- (USA models)/ .
(Canada models) turns on, the parking brake was
set .

If the indicator light blinks and the message ap­
pears, the re is not enough brak ing power to keep
the vehicle from ro lling. The brakes have over­
heated. The vehicle could roll away even on a
sma ll incline.

If the liJ indicator light turns on and this mes ­
sage appears, there is a parking brake malfunc­
t ion. Drive to your authorized Audi dealer or
qualified workshop immediately to have the mal­
funct ion corrected .
_L Engine cooling system malfunction
A malfunction in the engine cooling system must
be repaired as soon as possible .

If the indicator light turns on and the message
appears, the coolant temperature is too high or
the coolant level is too low.

chanical or other reasons, park at a safe dis­
tance from moving traffic, turn off the en­ gine and turn on the hazard warn ing lights

- Never open the hood if you see or hea r
steam o r coolant escap ing from the eng ine
compartmen t -yo u risk be ing sc alded. Wa it
u nti l you can no longer see or hear s team or
coolant escaping.
- T he eng ine compartment of any vehicle is a
dange rous a rea. Befo re yo u perform any
work in the engine compartment, turn of
the engine and allow it to coo l. Follow the
warning stickers

Do not contin ue driving if the . symbo l ill u­
m ina tes . There is a mal function in the eng ine
coo ling system -you could damage your en­
gine.
0 Battery
This warning/indicator light detects a malfunc­
tion in the generator or in the vehicle's electrical
system.
The . warning/indicator light ill uminates when
you switch on the ignition and must go out after
the engine has started.
• Alternator fault: Batte ry is not being charg­
ed
If t h e indicator lig ht t urns on and the message
appears, there is a malfunc tion in the gene rator
or veh icle ele ctrical system .
Dr ive to you r autho rized Aud i dea le r or q ual ified
wo rkshop immedia tely. Because the vehi cle bat­
tery is discharging, tu rn off a ll unnecessary e lec­
tr ica l equipment s uch as the radio. Seek profes ­
sional assistance if the ba ttery charge level is too
low.

~ Engine stop while driving
• Engine stopped : No power steering and
brake support.
There is a ma lf u nction in the engine o r in t he f uel
s u pply sys tem.
Mo re force is needed to steer a nd b rake the mov­
i ng vehicle when the engi ne is stopped . If the ve­
hicle is rolling, t ry to stop i t carefully on the s ide
of the road away from moving traffic. See an au ­
thorized Audi dea le r or a uthorized Audi Service
Facil ity for assistance.
& WARNING
I f t he engine stops w hile d riving, you will
need to use more force to brake the vehicle.
This increases the risk of an acc ident. There
will still be power steering if the ignition is
swi tched on while the vehicle is ro lling and
there is suff ic ient battery charge . Otherwise ,
you must use greater force w hen stee ring.
4'-Safety belts
This warning/indicator light reminds you to put
on your safety belt.
The . warn ing/ indicator light illum inates when
the ignit ion is switched on to remind the driver
and any front passenger to pu t on the safety belt.
Additionally , a n acoust ic wa rn ing (go ng) w ill also

Seats and storage
General information
Why is your seat adjustment so important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can only
provide maximum protection if the front seats are corr ectly adjusted .
There are various ways of adjusting the front
seats to provide safe and comfortable support
for the driver and the front passenger . Adjust
your seat properly so that:
- you can easily and quickly reach all the switches
and controls in the instrument panel
- your body is properly supported thus reducing
physical stress and fatigue
- the safety belts and a irbag system can offer
maximum protection

In the following sections, you will see exact ly
how you can best adjust your seats.
There are spec ial regulations and instr uctions for
installing a child seat on the front passenger's
seat . Always fo llow the information regarding
child safety provided in¢
page 166, Child safe­
ty .
A WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the driver and all
other passengers can result in serious person­
al injury .
- Always keep your feet on the floor when the
vehicle is in motion - never put your feet on
top of the instrument pane l, o ut of the win­
dow or on top of the sea t cushion. This ap­
plies espe cially to the passengers.
If your
seating pos it ion is inco rrect, yo u increase
the risk of injury in the case of sudden brak­
ing or an accident. If the ai rbag inf lates and
the seating position is incorrect, this cou ld
result in personal injury or even death.
- It is important for both the driver and front
passenger to keep a d istance of at least
10 inches (25 cm) between themselves and
the steering wheel and/or instrument pan­ el. If you're s itting any closer than this, the
airbag system can not protect you properly.
Seat s and sto rage
In addition, the front seats and head re­
stra ints must be adjusted to your body
he ight so that they can g ive you maximum
protection .
- Always try to keep as much distance as pos­
sible between yourself and the steer ing
wheel or instrument panel.
- Do not adjust the driver's or front passeng­
er's seat while the veh icle is moving . Your
seat may move unexpectedly, causing sud­
den loss of vehicle contro l and personal in­
jury.
If yo u ad just yo ur seat while the veh icle
is moving, you a re o ut of pos ition.
Driver's seat
The correct seat position is important for safe
and relaxed driving.
We recommend that you adjust the dr iver's seat
i n the following manner:
.. Adjust the seat in fore and aft direction so that
you can eas ily push the pedals to the floor

.,. Adjust the bac krest so that when you s it w ith

ble with the top of your head. If that is not pos­
sible, try to adjust the head restraint so that it
is as close to this posit ion as possible

A WARNING
Neve r pla ce any objects in the dr iver's foot­
well. An objec t could ge t into the pedal area
a nd interfe re with pedal func tion. In case of
sud den braking or an accident, you would no t
be ab le to b rake o r accelerate .

Front passenger 's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into the
rearmost position .
To avoid contact wi th the a irbag wh ile it is de­
ploying, do not sit any closer to the instrument
panel than necessary and always wear the three ­
point safety belt prov ided adjusted correctly. We
recommend that yo u adj ust the passenger 's seat
i n t he following ma nner:
.. Bring the backrest up to an (almost) upright
pos ition .
Do not ride w ith the seat recl ined .
.. Fo r adjustable head restraints: adjust the head
restra int so the uppe r edge is as even as poss i­
ble wi th the top of your head. If that is not pos­
sible, try to adjust the head restra int so that it
is as close to this position as possib le

greater the risk of pe rsonal injury from an
incorrect seating position and improper ly
positioned safety belts .

- The massage function switches off auto­
matically after approximately 10 minutes.
- The side bolsters* deflate when the driver's
door is opened . This allows you to enter and
exit comfortably. The side bolsters inflate
again once you begin driving.

Armrest
There is a storage compartment under the arm­
rest.

Adjusting the armrest
• To adjust the angle, raise the armrest from the
start ing position detent by detent.
• To bring the armrest back into its original posi­
tion, lift it above the top position and then fold
it back down.
Opening the storage compartment
• Press the button -arrow- upward.
Please note that the driver's arm movements
may be restricted with the armr est folded down.
For this reason, the armrest should not be folded
down when driving in city traffic.
Head restraints
Front head restraints
Ap plies to veh icles: w ith adjustable head restraints
Heod restraints that are adjusted according to
body size, along with the seat belt, offer effec­
tive protection.

Enlarg ing cargo capacity of the vehicle

The seat backs can be folded forward to enlarge
the cargo capacity.

• When you pull the re lease lever@<=> fig. 69 in
the direction of the arrow, the safety knob @
pops out far enough for the red marking on
knob to be visible.
• Fold the seatback forward.

• Raise the seatback until it is securely latched

on the safety knob @, the seat is latched.
When the seatback is latched in its up right posi­
tion, it can be locked and un locked with the me­
chanical key~

The luggage compartment can on ly enlarged
when the seatback is unlocked.
A WARNING
- The backrest must always be securely latch­
ed so that the safety belt of the center seat­
ing position can wo rk properly to help pro­
tect the occupant.
- The backrest must be securely latched in po­ sition so that no items contained in the lug­
gage compartment can s lide fo rwa rd upon
sudden b raking.
- Always check whether the latch is fully en-
gaged by p ulling the seatback fo rwa rd.

-Never allow safety belts to become dam­
aged by being caught in door or seat hard­
ware.
- Torn or frayed safety belts can tear and
damaged belt hardware can break in a
crash. Inspect the belts periodically. Belts
showing damage to webbing, bindings,
buckles, or retractors must be replaced .

-If you move the front seat back when the
rear seat backrest is folded forward, you
could damage the head restraints on the
rear seat.
- Slide the belt guide on the outside safety
belt all the way up before folding the back­
rest back forward. Make sure the seat belt is
not pinched or damaged when the rear seat
backrest if folded back . Other objects
should be removed from the rear seat bench
to protect the seatback from damage.
Tie-downs and cargo net
The cargo net* prevents small objects from slid­
ing.

Weak, damaged or improper straps used to
secure items to tie-downs can fai l during hard
braking or in a collision and cause serious per­
sonal injury.
-Always use suitable retaining straps and
properly secure items to the tie-downs in
the luggage compartment to help prevent
items from shifting or flying forward .
- Never attach a chi ld seat tether strap to a
tie-down .
- For strength-related reasons, the mounting
hooks can only be used to secure objects
weighing up to 10 lb. (5 kg). Heavier objects
will not be adequately secured -there is a
risk of injury.

A WARNING
-The ski sack is intended only for the trans­
portation of skis and other light objects . To
reduce the risk of serious personal injury
never t ransport heavy or pointed objects in
the s ki sack.
- When braking rapidly o r d uring a n accident
the load could be displaced and cause in ju ry
to o cc u pants.
- Sharp edges on the load must be covered

- Never stow the ski sack away when it is st ill
wet o r damp (for examp le, snow melting
from skis). Allow it to dry comp letely before
stowing i t away.
- Posit ion skis in the ski sack wi th the pointed
ends f acing the front and sk i pole s with t he
pointed ends facing the rear.
