Tires and vehicle load limits
There are limits to the amount of
load or weight that any vehicle
and any tire can carry. A vehicle
that is overloaded will not handle
well and is more difficult to stop. Overloading can not only lead to loss of vehicle control, but can al­
so damage important parts of the
vehicle and can lead to sudden tire failure, including a blowout
and sudden deflation that can
cause the vehicle to crash.
Your safety and that of your pas­ sengers also depends on making
sure that load limits are not ex­
ceeded. Vehicle load includes ev­
erybody and everything in and on
the vehicle. These load limits are
technically referred to as the vehi­
cle's
Gross Vehicle Weight Rat­
ing
("GVWR").
The "GVWR" includes the weight
of the basic vehicle, all factory in­
stalled accessories, a full tank of
fuel, oil, coolant and other fluids plus maximum load. The maxi­
mum load includes the number of
passengers that the vehicle is in­
tended to carry ("seating capaci­
ty") with an assumed weight of 150 lbs. (68 kg) for each passen-

ger at a designated seating posi­
tion and the total weight of any luggage in the vehicle. If you tow
a trailer, the weight of the trailer
hitch and the tongue weight of
the loaded trailer must be includ­
ed as part of the vehicle load.
The
Gross Axle Weight Rating
("GAWR") is the maximum load
that can be applied at each of the
vehicle's two axles.
The fact that there is an upper limit to your vehicle's Gross Vehi­
cle Weight Rating means that the
total weight of whatever is being
carried in the vehicle (including
the weight of a trailer hitch and
the tongue weight of the loaded
trailer) is limited. The more pas­
sengers in the vehicle or passen­
gers who are heavier than the
standard weights assumed mean
that less weight can be carried as
luggage.
The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
and the Gross Axle Weight Rating
are listed on the safety compli­
ance sticker label located on the
driver's side B-pillar.

Wheel bolts and rims
Wheel bolts
Wheel bo lts must be clean and loosen/t ighten
eas ily.
Rims
Rims with a bolted rim ring* or w it h bolted whee l
covers* consist of mu ltip le pieces . These compo­
nents we re bolted together using specia l bolts
a nd a special procedure . You must not repair or
d isassemble

Winter tires
Winter t ires signif icant ly imp rove the vehicle's
handling when dr iv ing in winter conditions. Be­
c au se of their construct io n (w id th, compou nd,
t read pa ttern), s ummer tires prov ide less t rac ­
tion on ice and snow .
.,. Use winter tires on all four wheels.

The effectiveness of winter tires is reduced great­
ly when the tread is worn down to a depth of
0 .157 i n (4 mm) . The characte rist ics of winter
t ir es also decrease g reatly as the t ire ages , re­
gard less of t he rema ining t read.

Re insta ll summer t ires at the app ropr iate
time, bec ause they prov ide better handli ng
when ro ads are free of snow and ice. Summer
tires cause less roa d noise, tire wear and fue l

winter tires . Please note that in some coun­
tries where winter tires are required, only
winter tires with

Snow chains
Snow chains not only improve the driving in win­
ter road conditions, but also the braking .
.. Only install snow chains on the front wheels.
This applies also to vehicles with all wheel
drive* .
.. Check and correct the seating of the snow
chains after dr iv in g a few feet, if necessary . Fol­
low the instructions from the manufacturer .
.. Note the maximum speed of 30 mph (SO km/
h). Note the loca l regulations.
Use of snow chains is only perm itted with certain
rim/tire combinations due to technical reasons.
Check with an authorized Audi dealer or author ­
ized Audi Service
Facility to see if you may use
snow chains.
You must remove the snow chains on roads with­
out snow. Otherwise, you could impair driving
ability and damage the tires.
A WARNING
Using incorrect snow chains or installing snow
chains incorrectly can result in loss of vehicle
control, which increases the risk of an acci­
dent .
{[J) Note
- Snow chains can damage the rims/wheel
covers* if the chains come into direct con­
tact with them . Remove the wheel covers*
first . Use coated snow chains.
- Using snow chains that add more than 0.4
inch (10.5 mm) of height can severely dam­
age the wheel housings and other vehicle
components.
- Do not install and use snow chains if there is
a malfunction in the air suspension*, be­
cause the vehicle height will be very low. If

you drive with snow chains anyway, the
wheel housings and other vehicle compo­
nents can be severely damaged.

When using snow chains, it may be useful to
switch on sport
mode¢ page 120.
Low-profile tires
Applies to: vehicles with low-profile tires
Compared to other tire/rim combinations, low­
profile tires offer a wider tread surface and a
larger rim diameter with shorter tire sidewalls.
This results in an agile driving style . However, it
may reduce the level of comfort and increase
road noise when driving on roads in poor condi­
tion.
Low -profile tires can become damaged more
quickly than standard tires when driving over
large bumps, potholes, manhole covers , and
curbs . Therefore, it is particularly important to
maintain the correct tir e pressure
¢ page 211.
To reduce the risk of damage to the tires and
rims, drive very carefully on poor roads.
Check your wheels regularly every 2,000 mi
(3,000 km) for damage . For example, check for
bulges/cracks on the tires or deformations/
cracks on the rims.
After a heavy impact or damage, have the tires
and rims inspected or replaced immediately by
an authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility.
Low-profile tires can wear out faster than stand­
ard tires .

Tread wear
The tread wear grade is a comparat ive rat ing
based on the wear rate of the t ire when tested
unde r contro ll ed conditions o n a specified gov ­
e rnmen t test co urse.
For example, a tire graded 150 would wear one
and one ha lf ( 11/2) t imes as well on the gove rn­
ment course as a tire g raded 1 00.
The relative performance of t ires depends upon
the actual condi tions of their use, howeve r, and
may depart s ignificant ly from the norm d ue to
va ria tions in driving hab its, service pra ctices and
d ifferences in road ch aract eris tics and clim ate.
Traction
The traction grades, from highest to lowest, are
AA, A, Band
C. T hose grades represent the t ire's
ab ility to stop on wet pavement as meas ured un­
de r contro lled condi tions o n specified gove rn ­
men t tes t su rfa ces of asp ha lt and conc re te. A tire
mar ked C m ay have poor trac tion pe rforma nce

Temperature
The temperature grades a re A (t he highest), B,
and C, rep resent ing the tire' s resistan ce to t he
gener ation o f heat and it s abili ty to d iss ipate
heat when tested unde r controlled condi tions on
a specified in door laboratory test whee l.
Susta ined hig h tem perature can cause t he ma te ­
r ial of the t ire to dege nerate and re duce tire life,
an d excess ive temperatu re can lead to sudden
tire fai lure

system

Each tire, including the spare (if prov ided),
shou ld be checked monthly when cold and inflat­
ed to the i nflat ion press ure recommended by the
vehicle manufacture r on the veh icle placard or
ti re infla tion p ressure labe l. (If your ve hicle has
t ir es of a diffe rent size t han the si ze ind icated on
t h e ve hicle placard or tire i nflat io n press ure la ­
bel, you sho uld dete rm ine the proper tire in fla­
tion press ure for those tires) .
As a n ad ded safety featu re, you r vehicle has been
equipped wi th a t ire p ress ure mon itor ing system
(TPMS) t hat ill umi nates a low tire p ressure tell ­
ta le w hen one or mo re of your tires is s ignificant ­
l y under -inflated. According ly, w hen the low ti re
pressure telltale illum inates, you sho uld stop and
c h eck your t ires as soon as possible, and inflate
them to the proper pressure. Dr iv ing on a sign ifi­
cant ly under -inflated t ire ca uses the t ire to over ­
heat and ca n lead to tire fa ilu re . U nder-inflation
also red uces fue l eff ic iency a nd tire tread life,
and may affect t he ve hicl e's handling a nd s top-
ping ability.

proper tire maintenance, and it is the driver's re­
sponsib ility to ma intain correct tire pressure,
even if under-inf lation has not reached the level
to trigger illum ination of the TPMS low tire pres­
sure telltale .
Your veh icle has also been equ ipped w ith a TPMS
malfunct ion indicator to indicate when the sys­
tem is not operating properly. The TPMS mal­
function indicator is combined w ith the low tire
pressure telltale. Whe n the system detects a
malfunct ion, the telltale will flash for approxi­
mately one minu te and then remain cont inuous ly
i llum inated. This sequence wi ll continue upon
subseq uen t veh icle start -ups as long as the ma l­
function exists.
When the malfunct ion i ndicator is ill uminated,
the system m ay not be ab le to detec t or sig nal
l ow tire press ure as intended. TPMS ma lfunctions
may occur for a var iety of reasons, incl uding the
installation of replacement or alternate tires or
wheels on the vehicle that prevent the TPMS
from functioning properly. Always check the TPMS malfunction telltale after rep lacing one or
more t ires or whee ls on your vehicle to ensu re
that t he replacement or alternate ti res and
wheels allow the TPMS to cont inue to func tion
p roperly.
If the tire pressure monitoring system

The tire pressure indicator in the instrument
cluster informs you if the tire pressure is too low
or if there is a system malfunction .

Using the ABS sensors, the tire pressure monito r­
ing system compares the tire tread circumfer­
ence and vibration characterist ics of the ind ividu ­
al tires. If the pressure changes in one or more
t ires, th is is indicated in the instrument cluster
display with an indicator l ight
IE and a message .
If only o ne tire is affected, the location of tha t
t ir e will be indicated .
The tire pressures must be stored in the Infotain­ ment system again each time the pressures
change (switching between partial and full load
pressure) or afte r changing or replac ing a tire on
yo ur vehicle

Regu lar, proper ca re helps to maintain your ve hi­
cle's value. It can a lso be a requirement when
submitting warranty claims fo r cor rosion damage
and pa int defects on the body.
The necessary care prod ucts can be obtained
from an authorized Audi dea le r or authorized
Aud i Service Facility . R ead and follow the instruc ­
tions fo r use on the packaging.

Car washes
T he longer that deposits remain on the vehicle,
the more the surface may be damaged. High
temperatures such as those caused by sun light
increase t he damag ing effect .
Before washing, rinse
off heavy deposits with
p lenty o f water.
S tu bbor n depos its s uch as bird droppi ngs or tree
sap are best removed with plenty of wate r and a
mic rofibe r cloth.
A lso , wash t he u nderside of yo ur vehicle once
road sa lt stops being used for the season .
Pressure washers
When washi ng your ve hicle w it h a pressu re wash­
e r, a lways fo llow the operating instr uctions pro­
v id ed wi th t he p ress ure washer. This is espe cially
i mportant in rega rd to the pressure and sp raying
d ista nce . Do not a im the spray directly at the
sea ls on the side w indows , doors, lids o r the sun -

Washing vehicles with matte finish paint by
hand
To avo id d amag ing the pa int w hen washi ng, fi rst
r emove dust and large p articl es from you r vehi ­
cl e. Insects, gre ase spo ts and fingerpr ints are
best removed w it h a s pecial cleaner for mat te
finish paint.
Apply t he p rodu ct using a microfiber cloth. To
avo id dam ag ing t he pa int surfa ce, do no t use too
much pressure.
Rinse t he ve hicle thoroug hly w ith wate r. T hen
cl ea n usi ng a neutra l shampoo an d a soft m icro­
f iber clo th .
Rinse the ve hicle thoroug hly aga in and let it air
dry. Remove a ny wate r residue using a chamois .

After changing a wheel
A wheel change is not complete without the do­
ing the following .
.. Always store the vehicle tool kit, the jack* and
the replaced tire in the luggage compartment
c:> page 130 .
.. Check the tire pressure on the spare wheel im­
med iate ly after mount ing it .
.. As soon as possible, have the tightening tor­
ques
on all wheel bolts checked with a torque
wrench. The correct tightening torque is 90 ft
lb s (120 Nm) .
.. Have the flat tire replaced as soon as possible.
@ Tips
-If you notice that the wheel bolts are cor­
roded and difficu lt to turn while changing a
tire, they should be replaced before you
check the tightening torque.
-Drive at reduced speed until you have the
tightening torques checked.
-After changing a wheel, the tire pressure in
a ll four tires must be checked/corrected and
the tire pressure monitoring indicator must
be stored in the MMI

The caps must be removed first from the wheel
bolts before the bolts can be unscrewed .

Removing

tool kit) over the whee l bolt cap until the inner
reta iners on the clip align with the edge of the
cover.

Never use the hexagonal socket in the hand le
of the screwdrive r to loosen or t ighten the
whee l bolts.
- Pull the reversible blade from the screwdriv ­
er before you use the hexagona l socket in
the handle to turn the whee l bolts.
- When mounting tires with
unidirect ional
tread de sign
make sure the tread pattern is
pointed the right
way ¢ page 231 .
-The wheel bolts shou ld be clean and easy to
t u rn. Check for dirt and corrosion on the
mating surfaces of both the wheel and the
hub. Remove all dirt from these surfaces be­
fore remounting the wheel.
Tires with unidirectional tread design
Tires with unidirectional tread design must be
mounted with their tread pattern pointed in the
right direction .
