cooling air while driving . If the spoiler is
damaged, the cooling effect w ill be im­
paired and the risk of the engine overheat­

Due to the high eff ic iency of these engines,
the engine may not always reac h opera ting
t em perature i n cold outside tempe ra tur es.
This is normal and not a cause for con cern .
Tachometer
The tachometer displays the engine speed in rev ­
olutions per minute (RPM).
You shou ld shift to the next lowest gea r whe n
the speed is below 1,S00 R PM. T he begin ning of
the re d zone in the tachome ter ind icates the
maximum permissible engine speed fo r all gea rs
once the engine has been bro ken in and when it is
warmed up to operating temperature . Before
reaching the red zone, you should shift into the
next h igher gea r, c hoose the Dor S selecto r lever
position, or remove your foot from the accelera­
tor pedal.

The ind icator lights in the instrument cluster
bl ink or tur n on. They ind icate fu nctions or mal­
funct io ns.
Messages may appear w ith some indicator lights.
A war ning s ignal will sound at the same time.

allow it to cool befo re working in the engine
compa rtment. Always follow the informa­

brake booste r is ava ilab le, but its effectiveness is
r educed. Bra kin g behavior may be different from

If the bl ind icator light blinks while driving, the
ESC or ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation) is active ly regu­

bl ind ic a tor light turns on, the system has
swi tched t he ESC off. In t his case, yo u can switch
the ignition off and then on to switch the ESC on again. The indicator light t urns off when the sys ­
tem is functioning fully .
I f the
II ind icator light turns on, ESC was

Stabilization control (ESC / ABS) malfun ction!

The brakes still function with their normal power, but ABS is not active.

cator l ight monitors the safety systems.
If the
II (USA models)/ m (Canada models) in­
d icator light turns on or blinks, there is a mal ­
function in a safety system such as the airbag or
be lt tensioner system .
Drive to an authori zed Audi dealer or authorized
Aud i Service Facility immediately to have the
malfunct ion corrected .
_& WARNING
Have the malfunct ion in the safety systems
inspected immediately . Otherwise, there is a
r isk that the systems may not activate during
a collision, which increases the risk of serious
injury or death.

malfunction in the engine control.

W Engine control (diesel engine)
The engine is preheating if the II indicator light
turns on when the ignition is switched on .
If the indicator light does not turn on or blinks
while driving, there is an engine control malfunc­
t ion.
Immediate ly drive s low ly to an authorized Audi
dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility to have
the malfunction corrected.
C Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL)
The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is part of
the On Board Diagnostic system (OBD II) . The
¢4 c;ymbol turns on when the ignition is sw itched
on and turns off aga in once the engine is started
and running at a steady idle speed. This indicates
that the MIL is f unct ion ing correctly.
The indicator light turns on if there is a malfunc­
t ion in the engine electronics . See an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Fac ility to
have the malfunction corrected. Fo r additional

er cap is not closed correctly

_r~ Diesel particulate filter
Applies to: vehicles with diesel engine and diesel particulate
filter
II Particulate filter: System fault See owner's
manual
The diesel particulate filter requires regenera­
t ion . To support the filter 's self -clean ing func ­
t ion:
Drive for approximately 15 minutes at 37 mph
(60 km/h) or above in the S selector lever posi­
t ion . Keep the engine speed around 2,000 RPM .
The temperature increase that will result from
t hi s can burn off the soot in the fi lter. The indica­
tor light wi ll tu rn off when the cleaning has com-
pleted successfully. .,..

The engine speed is automatica lly lim ited to the
speed d isplayed in the instrument cluster. T his
p rotects the e ng ine from overheating .
The engine speed lim itation deactivates once the
engine is no longer in the critical temperature
range and you have released the acce le rato r ped­
al once .
I f the engine speed lim itation was activated by
an eng ine contro l ma lf u nction,
the @B indicator
light also t urn s on. Make su re that the speed
does not go above t he speed d is p layed . Drive to
a n author ized A udi dealer or au thor ized A udi
Serv ice Facili ty im medi ately to have t he m alfunc­
tion cor rec ted.

Driver information s ystem
The MI L light may a lso ill uminate if there is a
leak in the on-board f uel vapor recovery system.
If the light ill uminates after a ref uell ing, stop
the vehicle and make sure the fuel filler cap is
proper ly closed
c;, page 193.
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the stor­
ed data can on ly be disp layed using specia l diag­
nostic eq uipment (generic scan too l for 0BD).
I n order to connect the specia l diagnostic equip ­
ment, push the plug into the Data Link Connector
(DLC). The DLC is located to the rig ht of the hood
release ¢
fig. 14.
Your author ized Audi dealer or a qualified service
station can interpret the code and perform the necessary repa ir.
A WARNING
Do not use the diagnostic connector for pe r­
sonal use. Incorrect usage can cause malfunc­
tions, which can increase the risk of a colli­
sion!
Electronic speed limiter
-
Your veh icle may be facto ry equipped wi th t ires
that a re rated for a maximum speed of 130 mph
(2 10 km/h). This is less t han the maxim um speed
of yo ur vehicle. To redu ce t he risk of s udden tire
fa ilur e and loss o f control if the veh icle is operat ­
ed at excessive speeds, yo ur vehicle a lso has an
electron ic speed limiter . The electronic spee d
lim ite r prevents your vehicle from going faster
than the t ire speed rating. For more information
c;, page 218.
I f th e en gine contro l unit receives faulty vehicle
road speed s ignals, the Ma lfunction Indicator

Transmission malfunction

lector lever posit ion aga in. You can then continue
driving.

ser vat ively .
The transm ission temperature has increased s ig ­
nificantly due to the sporty driving manner. D rive
in a less sporty manner until the temperature re­
turns to the normal range and the indicator light

ml Transmission malfunction: You can continue

sion . Yo u may continue driving. Drive to your au ­
thor ized Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service

Selector lever emergency release
If the vehicle 's power supply fails, the selector
lever can be released in an emergency.

driver or sim ila r object, press the pin down and
hold it in that position .

Only move the selec tor lever out of the P posit io n
whe n the ignition is switched on . If the veh icle
must be pushed or towed d ue to a power failure
(for example, the vehicle battery is drained), the
selector lever must first be moved to the N posi­
t ion using the eme rgency re lease mechanism.
