7 2 Seats and st o ra ge
Cooler
Introduction
Applies to vehicles: with cooler
Please clean the cooler before using it for the
first time~
page 216.
You can only switch on the cooler if
- the temperature in the luggage compart­
ment is below 131 °F (55 °C). The cooler
switches off automatically if the tempera­
ture in the luggage compartment exceeds 131 °F (55 °C) . Once the temperature falls
below 131 °F (55 °C) again, the cooler
swit ches on aga in automatically.
- the battery is adequately charged. The cool­
er switches off automatically if the vehicle
ba ttery voltage fal ls below a minimum lev­
el. This prevents the battery from d ischarg­
i ng. The cooler switches back on again auto ­
matically when the battery voltage increases
again (e.g. after starting the engine).
The cooler coo ls to 42 .8
° F ( + 6 °c) and the
freezer cools to 2 1.2 °F (- 6 °C) in optimum
cooling cond itions. The cooling performance
is affected by the temperature in the luggage
compartment. The temperature inside the
cooler will be higher if the luggage compart­
ment is hot.

To avoid putting the occupa nts at any r isk,
please observe the following safety ru les:
- The maximum capacity is 2.5 kg (5 .5
lbs.).
- Never overload the cooler. This could cause injury in the event of a co llision o r
s u dden bra king.
- The coo le r li d must always be kept closed
wh ile you are driv ing. Make sure the re­
taining catch is sec urely engaged . The
c o ntents of the coo le r could be thrown
forwar d into the passe nger comp art­
ment in the event of a collision or u nder
s udden braking -risk of inj ury!
- Inflammable liq uids, g as canisters, etc.
must not be store d in the cooler -risk of explos
ion! This also includes any prod­
ucts that might em it volati le or inflam­
mable gases.
- Liquids w ill freeze at temperatures at or
be low 32 °F (0 °C) and may cause glass
bottles to burst!

The cooler is located in the rear cabi n behind
the center armrest or behind the sliding cover
(depending on the equipment fitted in your
vehicle). The cooler and freezer only work
when the ignition is on .

- The engine cannot be started by pushing
or towing the vehicle.
- If the engine has been under heavy load
for an extended period, heat b uilds up in
the engine compartment after the en­
gine is switched off - there is a risk of
damaging the engine . Allow the eng ine
to run at idle for about 2 minutes before
switching it off.
@ Tips
If you open the driver's door with the igni­
tion on, a buzzer sounds and the message
Igniti on is on appears in the instrument
cluster display. Sw itch the ignition off .

If necessary, the engine can be switched off

A WARNING
- Never turn off the eng ine unti l the vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop.
- The brake booster and power steer ing
only work when the engine is runn ing .
If
the engine is off, you have to use more
force when steering or braking. Because
you cannot steer and brake as you usua l­
ly wo uld, this could lead to crashes and
serious injuries. -
For safety reasons, you should a lways
park your vehicle w ith the selector lever
in P . Otherwise, the vehicle could inad­
vertently roll away .
- After the engine has been switched off,
the radiator fan can cont inue to run for
up to 10 minutes -even with the ignition
sw itched off. It can also sw itch on again
after some time if the coolant tempera­
ture rises as the result ofa heat bu ildup
or if the engine is hot and the engine
compartment is additionally heated by
the sun's rays .

Do not stop the eng ine immedia tely after
hard o r extended driving. Keep the engine
running for approximate ly two minutes to
prevent excessive heat bui ld-up.
Starting the engine if there is a
malfunction
It may not be possible to start the engine un­
der certain circumstances, for example if the
battery in the vehicle key is drained, if inter­
ference is affected the key or if there is a sys­
tem malfunction.

Audi side assist: not available when
towing
The radar senso r's view is limited when tow ­
ing a trai le r. F or vehicles with a factory instal­
l ed towing hitch or a trailer hitch that was in­
sta lled later according to factory specifica­
tions, side assist is automatically deactivated as soon as the electrical connection to the
trailer's electrical socket is made, and this sta­
tus message appears in the instrument clus ­
ter display . Deactivation cannot be guaran­
teed when using a retrofitted towing hitch
that was
not installed acco rding to facto ry
specifications.
Safety tips
Appl ies to vehicles : wi th side assist
The side assist detection may be limited when
driv ing aro und narrow street corners, on hilly
streets, and under poor weather cond itions.
It is possible that the radar sensors may also
detect other objects, such as high or stag­
gered guardrails .
Side assist does not measure actual lane
width. The system assumes a fixed lane width.
Detection in the left and right lanes is based
o n this ass umed lane width . When driving on
narrow roads or when driv ing to the left or
right of the center of a trave l lane, it is poss i­
ble that vehicles will be detected that are
not
in the lane next to the lane you are using.
A WARNING
- Improper reliance on the side assist sys­
tem can cause collis ions and serious per­
sonal injury:
- Never rely on ly on side assist when
changing lanes .
- Always check rear view mirrors to make
sure that it is sa fe to change lanes.
- Side assist cannot detect all vehicles un-
der all conditions- danger of accident! ..,.

airbag system and prevent that system from
working properly in a collision.
There are some important things you have to
know to make sure that the effectiveness of
the system will not be impaired and that dis­
carded components do not cause injury or pol­
lute the environment.
A WARNING
Improper care, servicing and repair proce­
dures can increase the risk of personal in­
jury and death by preventing an airbag
from deploying when needed or deploying an airbag unexpectedly:
- Never cover, obstruct, or change the steering wheel horn pad or airbag cover or the instrument panel or modify them
many way .
- Never attach any objects such as cup
holders or telephone mountings to the
surfaces covering the airbag units.
- For cleaning the horn pad or instrument
panel, use only a soft , dry cloth or one
moistened with plain water. Solvents or
cleaners could damage the airbag cover
or change the stiffness or strength of the
material so that the airbag cannot de­
ploy and protect properly.
- Never repair, adjust, or change any parts
of the airbag system.
- All work on the steering wheel, instru­
ment panel, front seats or electrical sys­
tem (including the installation of audio
equipment, cellular telephones and CB
radios, etc .) must be performed by a
qualified technician who has the training
and special equipment necessary .
- For any work on the airbag system, we
strongly recommend that you see your authorized Audi dealer or qualified work­
shop.
- Never modify the front bumper or parts
of the vehicle body .
- Always make sure that the side airbag
can inflate without interference:
- Never install seat covers or replace­
ment upholstery over the front seat-

backs that have not been specifically
approved by Audi.
- Never use additional seat cushions that
cover the areas where the side airbags
inflate.
- Damage to the original seat covers or
to the seam in the area of the side air­
bag module must always be repaired
immediately by an authorized Audi
dealer.
- The airbag system can be activated only
once . After an airbag has inflated, it
must be replaced by an authorized Audi
dealer or qualified technician who has
the technical information, training and
special equipment necessary.
- The airbag system can be deployed only
once . After an airbag has been deployed,
it must be replaced with new replace­
ment parts designed and approved espe­
cially for your Audi model version . Re­
placement of complete airbag systems
or airbag components must be per­
formed by qualified workshops only.
Make sure that any airbag service action
is entered in your Audi Warranty
& Main­
tenance booklet under
AIRBAG REPLACE­
MENT RECORD.
- For safety reasons in severe accidents,
the alternator and starter are separated
from the vehicle battery with a pyrotech­ nic circuit interrupter.
- Work on the pyrotechnic circuit inter­ rupter must only be performed by a
qualified dealer - risk of an accident!
- If the vehicle or the circuit interrupter
is scrapped, all applicable safety pre­
cautions must be followed.

Undeployed airbag modules and preten­
sioners might be classified as Perchlorate Material - special handling may apply, see

restraint system including airbag modules

Replacing wh eels/ tire s
Vehicles w ith All Wheel Dr ive must always
have tir es of the same size. Also avoid tires
with different tread depths. For details see

Off-Road driving?
Your Aud i does not have enough ground clear­
ance to be used as an off -road vehicle. It is
therefor e best to avoid rough tracks and un ­
even terrain as much as possible . Also refer to
¢ page 198.
A WARNING
Always adjust your driving to road and traf­
fic condit ions . Do not let the extra safety
afforded by All Wheel Drive tempt you into
taking extra risks.
- Although the All Wheel Drive is very ef­
fective, always remember that braking
capacity is limited by t ire traction . Yo u
should the refore not dr ive at excessive
speeds on icy or s lippery road surfaces.
- On wet road su rfaces, be ca reful not to
dr ive too fast because the front wheels
cou ld beg in to s lide on top of the wa ter
(aquaplaning). If this sho uld occ ur, you
will have no warning from a sudden in­
crease in engine speed as with a front­
wheel drive vehicle. A lways drive at
speeds wh ich are suited to the road con­
ditions -risk of crash .
Energy management
Starting ability is optimized
Energy management controls the distribution
of electrical energy and thus optimi zes the
availability of electrical energy for starting the engine.
If a vehicle wit h a conventional energy system
i s not driven for a long period of time , the bat­
tery is discharged by idling cu rrent consumers
(e .g. immobilizer) . In certain circumstances it
can result in there being ins ufficient energy
avai lab le to start the engine.

Intelligent energy management in your vehi ­
cle hand les the distribution of e lectrica l ener­
gy. Start ing ability is marked ly improved and
the life of the b attery is extended.

Battery diagnosis
Battery diagnosis continuously de termines
the state of the battery . Sensors de termine
batte ry voltage, battery current and battery
temperature . This determines the current
state of charge and the power of the batte ry .
Idling current management
Id lin g cur ren t management reduces energy
consumption while the vehicle is standing.
With the ig nition switched off, it controls the
energy supply to the various electrical compo­ nents. Data from battery diagnos is is cons id­
ered.
Depend ing on the battery's state of cha rge ,
individua l cons umers are gradually turned off
to prevent excessive discharge of the batte ry
and th us maintain starting capability .
Dynamic energy manag ement
While the ve hicle is being driven, dynamic en ­
ergy management distrib utes the energy ge n­
erated according to the needs of the individ u­
al components . It regulates consumption, so
that more electrical energy is not being used
than is being generated and ensures an opti­
mal state of charge for the battery .

-But even energy management cannot
negate the limits of physics. Consider
t hat the powe r and l ife of a battery are
limited.

What you should know
The highest priority is given to maintaining
starting capability.
The battery is severely taxed in short-distance
driving, in city traffic and during the cold time
of year. Abundant electr ical energy is re­
qu ired, but only a little is generated. It is also
cr itical if the e ngine is not run ning and elect ri­
cal components a re turned on. In th is in­
stance energy is being consumed but none is be ing generated .
I t is in precisely these situations that you w ill
notice energy managemen t actively regulat ­
ing the distrib ution of energy.
Vehicle stands for an ext ended period
If you do not drive your vehicle over a period
of severa l days or weeks, elect rical compo­
nents are grad ually cu t back o r switched off .
This reduces energy co nsu mption and main­
tains starting cap abili ty
over a longer period.
Be aware that when you unlock you r vehicle,
some of the conve nience funct ions may not
ope rate, such as the Convenience key , the re­
mote cont ro l or the power seat adjustment .
The convenience functions will be availab le
aga in when you switch on the ignition and
start the engine .
With the engine turned off
If yo u lis ten to the radio, for example, with
the eng ine turned off or use othe r MM I fu nc­
tions, the battery is being discharged .
I f sta rting capability is jeopa rdized due to e n­
e rgy consumpt ion, the fo llow ing warning ap­
pears in the MMI disp lay :
Please start th e engine soon or th e syst em
will be turned off .
The warning ind icates that the system will be
turned off automatically after 3 m inu tes .
If
you wish to cont inu e us ing the functions , you
have to start the engine.
With the engine running
Although e lec trical energy is generated when
the vehicle is being driven, the battery can be ­
come discharged. This happens mostly when
li ttle energy is being generated and a g reat
deal consumed and the battery's state of
charge is not optimal.
To b ring the energy ba lance back into equili­
brium, consumers which req uire especially
l arge amounts of energy are temporar ily cut
back or sw itched off. Heat ing systems i n par­
ticular require a great deal of energy. If you
notice , for example, that the heated seats* o r
the heated rear window are not heating, they have been temporarily cut back or sw itched
off . These systems w ill be available again as
soon as the ene rgy balance has been restored.
You w ill also notice that engi ne idle speed has
been increased slightly . Thi s is normal and not
a cause for con ce rn. By inc reas ing eng ine id le
speed the addi tional energy requ ired is gener­
ated and the battery is charged.

' Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in
the engine compartment.
Whenever you must perform any work in the
engine compartment, for example checking
and filling different fluids, there is a risk of injury, burns and accidents. To prevent per­
sonal injury always observe the following
WARNINGS. The engine compartment of any
vehicle is a hazardous area

To help avoid injury, before you check any­
thing under the hood:
- Turn off the engine.
- Switch off the ignition .
- Apply the parking brake.
- Move selector lever to "P" (Park) .
- Always let the engine cool down. Hot
components will burn skin on contact.
- To reduce the risk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam
or coolant escaping from the engine
compartment. Wait until no steam or
coolant can be seen or heard before care­
fully opening the hood.
- Keep children away from the engine com­
partment.
- Never spill fluids on hot engine compo­
nents . They can cause a fire .
- Never touch the radiator fan. The auxili­
ary electric fan is temperature controlled
and can switch on suddenly .
- Never open the coolant reservoir cap
when the engine is still warm . The cool­
ant system is pressurized and hot cool­
ant could spray out.
- Protect your face, hands and arm from
steam or hot engine coolant by placing a
thick rag over the cap when you open the
coolant reservoir.
- If work on the fuel system or the electri­
cal system is necessary:
- Always disconnect the battery.

-Never smoke or work near heate rs or
open flames. Fluids in the engine com­
partment could start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher im­
mediately ava ilable.
- To avoid elect rical shock and persona l in­
jury while the engine is running or be ing
started, never touch:
- I gnition cables
- Othe r components of the high voltage
e lectronic ignition system.
- If you must pe rform a check or repair
with the engine running:
- F irst, fully apply the pa rking brake,
move selector lever to "P" (Park) .
- Always use extreme caution to prevent
clothing, jewelry, or long hai r from get­
ting caught in the radiator fan, V-belts
or other moving parts, or from contact­ ing hot parts. T ie back hair before
starting, and do not wear cloth ing that
will ha ng or droop into the eng ine.
- Min imize exposure to emission and
c h emical hazards

To detect lea ks in time, inspect the vehicle
floor pan from underneath regular ly. If
you see spots from oil or other veh icle flu­
i ds, have you r vehicle inspected by an au­
thorized Audi dea ler.

Do not try to push it shut; it may fail to en­

A hood that is not completely latched
could fly up and block your view while dr iv­

- When you close the engine hood, chec k it

ly engaged. The hood shou ld be flush
with the surround ing vehicle body parts .
- If you notice while driv ing that the hood
is not secured prope rly, stop at once and
close it. •

of brake fl uid as we ll as the special tools
requ ired and the necessary expert ise, we
recommend that you have t he brake fluid
changed by your author ized Audi dealer .
Battery
General information
Under normal operating conditions, the bat­
tery in your Audi does not need any mainte ­
nance. With
high outside temperatures or
long daily dr ive s we recommend that you have
the electro lyte level checked by a service fa­
cility . The electrolyte level shou ld a lso be
checked each time the battery is charged
¢ page 235.
Have the battery checked when you take your
ve hicle in for service . Yo u are well adv ised to
replace a battery that is older than 5 yea rs .

Disconnecting the battery terminals
Some vehicle functions (power w indow regu­
lators , for example) are lost if the battery ter­
m inals a re d isconnected. These func tions have
to be re lea rned after the batte ry term inals a re
connected agai n. T o prevent this , the bat tery
should only be d isconnec ted from the vehicle
e lec tric al system when absolu tely necessa ry
for repairs .
Vehicles not driven for long periods
If you do not drive you r vehicle over a period
of severa l days or weeks, elec trical compo­
nen ts are gr adually cut b ack o r swi tched off .

tains starting capab ility over a longer per io d
