Operation
We recommend pressing the
I AUTO I button and setting the temperature to 72 °F (22 °C) .

Press the buttons to turn the functions on or
off . Use the dials to adj ust the temperature,
the blower speed and the a ir distribution. The
LED in a button w ill light up when the func­
tion is sw itched on. The settings are shown in
the climate control display and are a lso shown
in the MMI display for a few seconds . The driv­
e r and front passenger sett ings can be adj ust­
in g separately.
You can also adjust the rear left and right
sides in the four zone automat ic climate con­
trol*

IOFF I Switching the climate control
system on/off
The IOFFI button switches the climate control
system on or off .
It also switches on when you
turn the dial or press any button . Airflow from outside is
blocked when the climate control
system is switched off.
You can acti vate the residual heat functi on
whe n the ignition is off by pressing and hold­
ing the ~ button . The residual heat from the
coolant is used to heat the vehicle i nterior.
The residua l heat function switches off auto­
matically after about 30 minutes.
IAIC ! Switching cooling mode on/off
The air is not coo led and hum idity is not re­
moved when cooling mode is switched off.
This can cause fog on the windows. Cooling
mode switches off automatically when the
outside temperature is be low zero.
1- 1 Switching recirculation mode on/off
In recircu lation mode, the air inside the vehi­
cle is circulated and filtered. This prevents the
unfiltered air outside the vehicle from enter­
ing the vehicle interior. We recommend
switching recirculation mode on when driving
through a tunnel or when sitting in traffic
¢ ,&. .
The !AUTO I button or~ button switches reci r­
cu lation mode off.
IAUTO! Switching automatic mode on
Automatic mode maintains a cons tant tem­
perature inside the vehicle. Air temperature,

airflow and air distribution are controlled au­
tomatically.
Adjusting the temperature
Temperatures between 60 °F (+16 °() and
84
°F (+28 °C) can be set. Outside of this
range,
lo or hi will appear in the climate con­
trol system display. At both of these settings,
the climate control system runs continuously
at maximum cooling or heating power. There
is no temperature regulation.
~ Adjusting the airflow
You can adjust the airflow manually to suit
your needs. To have the airflow regulated au­
tomatically, press the
! AUTO ! button.
~ Adjusting the air distribution
You can manually select the vents where the
air will flow. To have the air distribution regu­
lated automatically, press the
IAUTOI button.
~ I lil* Adjusting Seat heating/
ventilation*
Pressing the button switches the seat heat­
ing/ventilation on at the highest setting (level
3). The L EDs indicate the temperature level.
To reduce the temperature, press the button
again. To switch the seat heating/ventilation
off, press the button repeatedly until the LED
turns off.
After 10 minutes, the seat heating/ventilation
automatically switches from level 3 to level 2.
In vehicles without the four zone automatic
climate control*, buttons in the rear center
console control the seat heating for both out­
er rear seats*.
~ Switch the defroster on/off
The windshield and side windows are defrost­
ed or cleared of condensation as quickly as
possible. The maximum amount of air flows
mainly from the vents below the windshield.
Recirculation mode switches off. The tempera­
ture is controlled automatically.
The
IAUTOI button switches the defroster off.
~ Switching rear window heater on/off
The rear window heater only operates when
the engine is running. It switches off auto­
matically after 10 to 20 minutes, depending
on the outside temperature.
To prevent the rear window heater from
switching off automatically , press and hold
the~ button for more than 2 seconds. This
r ema ins stored until the ignition is switched
off.
I SYNC I Synchronization*
When synchronization is switched on, the set­
tings for the driver's side are applied to the
front passenger's side (except for seat heat­
ing/ventilation*). The rear seat is also
synchronized in vehicles with the 4-zone de­
luxe automatic climate control system*. Syn­
chronization switches off if the settings are
adjusted on the front passenger's side or in
the rear*.
You can synchronize the settings in a row by
pressing and holding a knob. For example, to
apply the settings for the front passenger's side to the driver's side, press and hold the
knob on the front passenger's side.
Air vents
You can open or close the center and rear
vents in the cockpit and the vents in the rear
center console and door pillars using the
ridged thumbwheels. The levers adjust the di­
rection of the airflow from the vents.
,&. WARNING
- Do not use the recirculation mode for ex­
tended periods of time. The windows
could fog up since no fresh air can enter
the vehicle. If the windows fog up, press
the air recirculation button again imme­
diately to switch off the air recirculation
function or select defrost.
- Individuals with reduced sensitivity to
pain or temperature could develop burns
when using the seat heating function. To reduce the risk of injury, these individu-
als should not use seat heating . .,..

Stopping the engine
• Bring your vehicle to a complete stop.

Steering lock
The stee ring lo cks w hen you t urn the engine
off using the
I S TART ENGINE STOP I button
and open the dr iver's door . The locked steer­
ing helps prevent vehicle theft .
Emergency off
If necessary, the eng ine ca n be sw itched off
with the selector lever in the R, Dor S pos i­
tions . The eng ine stops if you press the
I START ENGINE STOP ! button at speeds be low
6 mph (10 km/h) .
A WARNING
-Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a complete stop. The
full function of the brake booster and the power steering is not quara nteed. You
must use more force to turn or b rake if
necessary. Because you cannot stee r and
brake as you usua lly would, th is could
lead to c rashes and serious injur ies.
- For safety reasons, you shou ld always
par k your vehicle with the se lector lever
in P. Otherwise, the ve hicle co uld i nad­
vertent ly roll away .
- After the engine has been switched off,
the radia tor fan can continue to run fo r
up to 10 min utes -even with the ign it ion
switched off. It can a lso switch on again
after some time if the coolant tempera­
ture rises as the result of a heat buildup
or if the engine is hot and the engine
compartment is addit ionally heated by
the su n's rays.
(D Note
Do not stop the eng ine immediately after
hard or extended driving . Keep the eng ine
runn ing for approximate ly two minutes to
prevent excess ive heat bu ild-up.

sounds if you open the driver's door when the
ignition is sw itched on.
Press brake pedal to start eng ine
This message appears if you press the
I START ENGINE STOPI button to start the en­
gine and do not depress the brake pedal. The
engine can only be started if the brake pedal
is depressed .
!!I Is key in the vehicle ?
If the indicator ligh t turns on and the mes­
sage appears, the remote control key was re­
moved from the vehicle whi le the engine was
runn ing . If the ignition key is not in the veh i­
cle you will not be able to switch on the igni­
tion or restart the engine after it has bee n
switched off . You will also not be able to lock
the ve hicle from the outs ide .
Shift to P , othe rwise v ehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock if le ver is not in P .
This driver message appears for safety rea ­
sons if the transmission has not been shifted
to the P position when you switc h the ignition

Basic requirements for the Start-Stop
mode
- The driver's door is closed .
- The driver' seat be lt is latc hed.
- T he hood is closed.
- T he veh icle must have been driven faster
than 2.5 mph (4 km/h) since the last stop.
- A trai ler is not hitched to the vehicle.
A WARNING
-Never let the vehicle roll with the engine
switched off. You could lose cont rol over
the vehicle . This can lead to a coll ision
and serious injuries .
- Th e brake booster and the steer ing sup­
port do not work while the eng ine is
switched off. More force is required to
stop and to steer the vehicle.
- To reduce the risk of injuries, make sure
that the Start-Stop-System is turned off
when working in the engine compart­
ment¢

Starting/stopping the engine

and keep pressing the brake pedal. The en­

.. When you take your foot off the brake ped ­
al, the engine restarts. The indicator light
turns off.
Additional information
The engine will switch off in the P, D, N and S
positions as well as in manual mode . In the P
pos ition, the engine wi ll also remain off if you
take yo ur foot off the brake pedal. The engine
starts again when you select another selector lever position and take your foot off the brake
pedal.
If you select the R position during a Stop
phase, the engine will start again.
Shift from D to P quickly to prevent the engine
from starting un intentionally when sh ifting
through R.
You can determine for yourself if the engine
will stop or not by reducing or increasin g the
amount of force you use to press the brake
pedal. For example, if you only lightly press
on the brake pedal in stop-and and-go traffic
or when turning, the engine will not switch off
when the veh icle is stationary. As soon as you
press the brake down ha rder, the engine wi ll
swit ch off. ..,

@ Tips
When you stop and the start-stop-system
turns the engine off, the ignition remains on. Make sure that the ign ition is switched
off before exiting the vehicle.
General information

The standard Start-Stop-mode can be cancel·
led for different system-related reasons.

Engine will not switch off
Before each stop phase, the system checks if
certain cond itions have been met . For exam­
p le, the engine will
not be switched off in the
following situations:
- The engine has not reached the minimum
required temperature for Start -Stop-mode .
- The interio r temperature selected by the A/C
system has not been reached.
- Th e outside temperature is extremely h igh/
low.
- The windshield is being defrosted

- The parking system* is switched on.
- The battery charge level is too low .
- The steering wheel is sharply turned or there is a steer ing movement.
- After engaging the reverse gear.
- On sharp inclines .

Engine automatically restarts
The stop phase is interrupted in the following
situations, for example. The engine restarts
without any action by the driver.
- The interior temperature varies from the
temperature selected in the A/C system.
- The windsh ield is being defrosted

row.
- The battery charge level becomes too low .
- High power consumpt ion.

If you shift into the D, Nor S positions af­

fac ility for servicing as soon as possible to cor­
rect the malfunction.
Speed warning system
Introduction
The speed warning system helps you to stay
under a specified maximum speed .
The speed warning system warns you if you
are exceeding the maximum speed that you
have set . You will hear a warn ing tone when
your speed exceeds the stored value by ap­
p rox imately 3 mph (3 km/h) . An indicato r
l ig ht . (USA models)/ . (Canada mode ls) i n
the ins trumen t clus ter display also t urns on at
the same time . The ind icator light

turns off when the speed decreases below the
stored maximum speed.
Se tting a thresho ld is re commended if yo u
wo uld like to be reminded when you reach a
certain maximum speed. Situations where you may want to do so include driv ing in a country
with a general speed Limit or if there is a
specified max imum speed for winter tires .
@ Tips
Even though your vehicle is equipped with
a speed warning system, you should st ill watch the speedome
ter to ma ke s ure you
are not dr iving faster than the speed limit .
Setting the threshold
You can set, chang e and delet e the threshold
in the MMI.
• Select: I CAR I func tion button > Car sy stem s
contro l but to n > Driver a ssist > Speed warn­
ing .
You can set any threshold betwee n 20 mph
(30 km/h) and 150 mph (2 40 km/h). Se tting s
can each be adj usted in incremen ts of
5 mph
(10 km/h).
Cruise control
Switching on
The cruise con trol sys tem makes it possible to
drive at a constant speed starting at 20 mph (30 km/h) .

The speed is k ept constant via an engine out­
put adjustment or act ive brake intervention .
A WARNING
-Always pay attention to traffic even when
the cruise control is switched on . You are
always responsible for your speed and
the distance between your vehicle and other vehicles.
- For safety reasons, the cruise control
should not be used in the city, in stop­
and-go traff ic, on twisting roads and
when road conditions are poor (such as
ice, fog, grave l, heavy rain and hydro ­
planing) -risk of accident .
- Turn off the cruise control temporari ly
when entering turn lanes, highway exit lanes or in construction zones.
- Please note that inadvertently "rest ing "
yo ur foot on the accelerator peda l causes
the cruise control not to brake. This is
because the cruise control is overridden
by the driver's acce leration.
- If a brake system malfunction such as
overheating occurs when the cruise con­
trol system is sw itched on, the braking
function in the system may be switched
off. The other cruise control functions re­
main active as long as the indicator light
[~jlQ~i4 (US models) I ii (Canad ian mod­
els) is on.
The brake lights illuminate as soon as the brakes decelerate automat ically .
Changing speed

You can also press the accelerator pedal down
to increase your speed, e.g . if you want to
pass someone . The speed you saved earlier
will resume as soon as you release the accele r­
ator pedal.
If, however, you exceed your saved speed by
6 mph (10 km/h) for longer than S minutes,
the cruise contro l wi ll turn off temporari ly.
The green symbol

The saved speed remains the same .
Presetting your speed
You can preset your desired speed while the
vehicle is not moving .
" Switch on the ignition.

increase or decrease your speed .
" Release the lever to save that speed.
This function makes it possible, for example,
to save the speed you want before dr iving on
the h ighway. Once on the highway, act ivate

What can adaptive cruise control do?
The adaptive cruise control system uses video,
radar and ultrasound . Moving vehicles ahead
can be recognized up to about 650 feet (200 m) away.
On open roads w ith no traff ic, adaptive cruise
control works like a regular cruise control sys­
tem. The stored speed is maintained . When
approaching a moving vehicle detected up
ahead, the adaptive cruise control system au­
tomatically slows down to match that vehi­
cle's speed and then maintains the distance
that the driver previously stored. As soon as
the system does not detect a vehicle up
ahead, adaptive cruise control accelerates
back up to the stored speed.
In stop-and-go traffic, adaptive cruise control
can brake until the vehicle stops and acce ler­
ate again under certain conditions and if this
is possible within the system 's limits and ca­
pabilities

will not make an emergency stop .
Which functions can be controlled?
When you switch adaptive cruise contro l on,
you can set the current speed as the "control speed"
c> page 95, Switching on and off.
When driving, you can stop cruise control
c> page 9 7 or change the speed c> page 96
at any time.
You can also set the distance to the object
ahead and set the adaptive cruise control driv­
ing program

rent system status and settings.

White vehicle -A vehicle ahead was detected .
Red vehicle -Prompt for the driver to take ac­

Both arrows on the scale© indicate the dis­
tance to the vehicle ahead . No arrow appears
when the vehicle is on an open road and there is no object ahead. If an object is detected
ahead, the arrow moves on the scale .
The green zone on the scale shows the stored d istance. For information on changing the stored distance, refer to

page 97. If the
distance se lected is too close or may soon be­
come too close, the arrows move into the red
z one on the sca le.
A WARNING
Improper use of the adaptive cruise con­
trol can cause collisions, other accidents
and serious personal injur ies .
- Pressing the
!SET ! button when driving at
speeds below
20 mph (30 km/h), w ill au­
tomatically accelerate the vehicle to
20
mph (30 km/h), which is the minimum
speed that can be set .

-If you switch the ignit ion or the adaptive
cruise control off, the set speed is erased
from the system memory.
- You cannot switch the Electron ic Stabili­
zation Control (ESC) to the SPORT mode
when adaptive cruise control is switched
