The instrument illumination (for dia ls and
needles) t urns on when the ignition is on
a nd the vehicle lights are tur ned off. As
the daylight fades, the illumination of t he
dia ls likewise dims automatica lly and w ill
go o ut comple tely when the o utsi de light
i s very low. Th is feature is meant t o rem ind you
to sw itch on the head ligh ts when o ut­
s id e light condi tions become poor .
Engine coolant temperature gauge
The engine coolant gauge (!) ¢ poge 10, fig. 3
only works when the ignition is on. To prevent
damage to your engine, please note the fol­
lowing important po ints:
Engine cold
If only the LEDs at the bottom of the gauge
turn o n, the engine has not reached operating
temperature yet. Avoid hig h engine speeds,
heavy engine loads and heavy throttle applica­
tions .
Normal temp erature
The eng ine has reached its operating temper-
at ure once the LEDs up to the center of the .,.

gauge turn on under normal d riving condi ­
tions . The LEDs higher up may turn on when
the eng ine is under heavy load or the exter ior
temperature is high . This is no need to worry
as long as the. warning light in the instru­
ment cluster does not illuminate . If the LEDs
in the upper area of the display and the ind ica­
tor light . in the instrument cluster d isplay
turn on, the coolant temperature is too high
¢page 16.
A WARNING
-Always observe the warning in
~ page 226, Engine compartment, be­
fore opening the hood and checking the
engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dr ipping from the engine compartment.
You could burn yourself. Let the engine
cool off first so that you cannot hear or
see any steam or engine coolant .
(D Note
- Mounting additional lights or accessories
in front of the a ir inlets reduces the cool­
i ng effect of the rad iator . At h igh outside
temperatures or high eng ine load, the
engine co uld overheat.
- The front spo ile r has been designed to
properly distrib ute the cooling air when
the veh icle is moving. If the spoiler is
damaged, this cou ld red uce the cooling
effect and t he engine co uld then over­
heat . Ask your aut ho rized Audi dea le r for
ass istance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM
(revolutions per minutes).
If engine R PM drops be low 1,500, you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red a rea
at the end of the sca le ind icates maxim um
perm iss ible engine RPM after the break-in pe­
riod. Before reaching this area, move these­
lector lever to position "D (Drive)" or ease
your foot off the accelerator pedal.
@ Note
The tachometer need le should only briefly
be in the red zone: yo u could damage your
engine! The beg inning of the red zone var ­
i es depending on the engine.
@ For the sake of the environment
Upsh ifting early saves fuel and reduces en ­
gine noise.
Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge only works when the ignition is
o n.
If the fue l level drops below 4 gallons (15
l ite rs), the bottom LE D tu rns red and the indi­
cator light~ turns on
c::> page 21. The bot­
tom LED b link s red when the fue l level is very
l ow .
The possible range based on the current fuel
level is shown in tab@~
page 23, fig. 4.
(D Note
Never run the ta nk complet ely dry. An ir­
r egular supply of f uel can cause engine
misfiring and fuel cou ld enter the exha ust
system. The cata lytic converter could t hen
overheat and be damaged.
Warning/indicator lights
Description
T he ind icator lights in the ins trument clus ter
blink or turn on. They indica te f unct ions or
malfunctions

Messages may appea r with some indicato r
li ghts. A warning signal will sound at the
same t ime. The indica tor lights and messages
in the center of the displays may be rep laced
by other disp lays. To show them again, select
the tab for ind icator lights and messages us­
ing the multifunction steering whee l
c;;> page 23. If there are several malfunc­
tions, you can display them one at a time us- ing the thumbwheel. ..,.

If the indicator light DJ and the ABS indicator
light
r.t.1:1:1 (USA models) 1 11] (Canada mod­
e ls) turn on and the message appears, there is
a ma lfunction in the ABS system or e lectronic
d ifferential lock. This also interrupts the ESC.
The brakes still function with their normal power, but ABS is not active.
Drive to your authorized Aud i dea ler immedi­
ately to have the malfunction corrected.
If the battery terminals were disconnected
and re -connected, the vehicle was jump start­
ed or the battery is very weak, the ESC sensor
system goes through a learning process for
the first few yards. The warning/ind icator
light illuminates. The warn ing/ indicator l ight
goes out as soon as the learning process is
comp lete.

ABS/(@) Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL).
The warning/indicator light
E (USA mod­
els)
Ill] (Canada mode ls) will come on for a
few seconds when the ignition is switched on.
The light will go out after an automat ic check
sequence is completed .
There i s a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The warning/ ind icator light does not illumi­
nate when you switc h the ignition on.
- The warning/indicator light does not go out after a few seconds.
- The warning/indicator light illuminates
whi le driving.
The ESC indicator light also illuminates if
there is a malfunction in the ABS. The mes­
sage
Stabilizatio n control (ESC /ABS ) Fault !
See owne r's manual
also appears in the in­
strument cluster display and a warning tone
sounds .
The brake s ystem will still respond even
without the assistance of the ABS s ystem .

Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake war ning l igh t c::> page 14 and the
ABS warning illum inate together th ere may be
a mal function in the ABS, and there may a lso
be a malfunction i n the brake system itself
c::> .& . The ABS will not wo rk and you will no ­
tice a change in b raking response and per ­
formance .
In the event of a malfunction in the brake

Malfunction in th e electronic diff erential
lock (EDL)
The EDL works together w ith the ABS. The
ABS warning light will come on if there is a malfunction in the EDL system¢ page 198 .
See your author ized Audi dealer as soon as
poss ible .
.&_ WARNING
- If the r.t.1:1:1 (USA mode ls)/ [IJ (Canada
models) w arning light does not go ou t,
or if it comes on whi le dr iving, t he ABS
system is not wor king properly. The vehi­
cle can then be stopped only wit h the
standard brakes (without ABS). You w ill
not have the protect ion ABS prov ides.
Contact your Audi dea ler as soon as pos­
sible.
- USA models: If the
1111 warning light,
the:
JjJ warning light and the E warn­
ing light come on together, the rear
wheels could lock up f irst under hard
brak ing. Rear wheel lock-up can ca use
loss of vehicle control and an accident.
Have your vehi cle repaired immediately
by your authorized A udi dealer or a quali ­
fied workshop . Drive slow ly and avoid
sudden, hard brake applications.
- Canada models:

hard braking. Rear wheel lock-up can
cause loss of vehicle control and an acci­
dent . Have your vehicle repaired immedi­
ately by your authorized Audi dealer or a

contact your authorized Audi dealer or quali­
fied workshop to have all brake pads inspect­ ed. On USA models the warni ng light

Driving with bad brakes can cause a colli­
sion and serious personal injury .

EPC Electronic powe r cont rol
This warning/indicator light monitors the
electronic power control .
The~ warn ing/ indicator light (Electronic
Power Control) illuminates when you switch
the ignition on as a function check .
(D Tips
If this warning/indicator light illuminates
while you are dr iving, then there is a mal­
function in the engine electron ics. Have
the malfunction corrected as soon as pos­
sible by your authorized Aud i dealer or
qualified repair facility.

o Malfunction Ind icator Lamp (MIL )
The Ma lfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is pa rt
of the On-Board Dia gnostic (OBD II) system.
The symbo l
¢-ff lights up when the ignition is
switched on and will turn off after the engine
has started and has settled at a constant idle
speed. This indicates that the MIL is work ing
proper ly.
The warning light illuminates when there is a
malfunction in the engine electronic system.
Contact your authori zed Audi dea ler and have
the malfunction corrected.
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate

!?) Engine speed lim itation
Applies to vehicles: wit h engine speed li mitatio n
lfl Engine speed maximum XXXX RPM
The eng ine speed is automatically limited to
the speed displayed in the driver information
system . This protects the engine from over ­
heating.
T he eng ine speed limitation deactivates once
the engine is no longer in the critical tempera­
ture range and you have re leased the accele ra­
tor pedal once.
If the engine speed limitation was activated
by an engine control malfunction, the indica ­
tor light~ also turns on . Make sure that the
speed does not go above the speed displayed .
Drive to your authorized Audi dealer immedi­
ately to have the malfunction corrected .
· ~ Engine oil level
Ill Add oil, max. x qt (l). You may cont inue
driving
When the symbol Ill and driver message ap­
pear, add the amount of oil appearing in the
display at the next opportunity

program. The fuel economy messages turn off
automatically after a certain period of time.
.,. To turn an economy message off immedi-
ately after it appears, press any button on
the multifunction steering wheel.
@ Tips
- Once you have turned a fuel economy
message off, it will only appear again af­
ter you turn the ignition on again.
- The fuel economy messages are not dis­
played in every instance, but rather in in­
tervals over a period of time.
Cylinder on demand System
Applies to vehicles: with 4.0 TFSJ engine

To save fuel, the engine automatically turns
four cylinders on or off, depending on the
amount of power needed. This action is not
felt by the passengers.
Displaying cylinder mode
Requirement: the on-board computer is dis­
played
~ page 24.
.,. Turn the thumbwheel until the current fuel
consumption display is shown in the instru­
ment cluster.
If the green bar is displayed,
you are driving in 4-cylinder mode.
Basic requirements for 4-cylinder mode
4-cylinder drive mode is used automatically if
certain basic requirements are fulfilled. These
include:
- A low power output requirement.
- Driving in third gear or higher.
- Engine speed between 960 and 3,500 RPM. - A warm engine.
Odometer

The odometer shows you how many miles
(kilometers) you have driven. You can switch
the display from miles to kilometers and vice
versa via the MMI.
Upper odometer
The trip odometer shows the distance driven
since it was last reset. It can be used to meas­
ure short distances. The last digit indicates
1/10 of a mile (100 meters).
You can reset the trip odometer to zero by
pressing the Reset button
Efil.
Lower odometer
The lower odometer shows the total number
of miles (kilometers) driven.
Malfunction message
If there is a malfunction in the instrument
cluster,
DEF will appear in the trip odometer
display area. Contact your authorized Audi
dealer to have the problem corrected .

ment cluster display ¢
page 23, fig. 4. There
is also an ana log clock in the center conso le
¢fig. 12.
When you open the drive r's door, the date and
time appear in the instrument cluster display for 30 seconds. When the ign ition is switched
on, the time is always displayed in the status
line © regard less of the current d isp lay.
You can set the time on both clocks and the
date display in the MMI. Refer to the M MI
owner's manual for instructions.
Service interval display
The service interval display reminds you when
your next service is due.

The schedule for the next oil change o r inspec­
tion is calculated a utomatically and displayed
according ly. The display works in two stages:
Service reminder
30 days before the next service is due, a serv­
ice reminder appears in the display when you
switch the ignition o n

After abo ut 5 sec onds the display sw itches
back to n ormal. The d istance and time re­
maining are updated each time the ignition is
switched on until the date due for serv ice is
reac hed.
Service due
W hen the due date for service is reached, the
message
Service due! appea rs in the instru­
ment clus ter immediately after you switch the
i gnit io n on . Additionally, a war ning tone sou
nds. After about 5 seconds the disp lay
switc hes back to normal.
Calling up the service schedules
If or w hen an oi l change or inspection is due,
c a n be shown in the M MI di spl ay by selec ting
t h e service in terval d isplay in the c ar menu .

Resetting the service interval display
Your auth ori zed Audi de aler will reset the cor­
responding service sc hedule a fter pe rforming
t h e a ppropriate service o n your vehicle. You
also have t he possibility to reset the oil
change schedule after hav ing performed a n
o il change according to Aud i specifications.

year from one service to the next m ust n ot
be exceeded.

- Do not reset the display between oil
chan ges, otherwise the disp lay wi ll be in­
co rrect.
- The i nfo rmation in the Service Reminder
remains stored eve n when t he ve hicle
battery is disconnected.

With the ignition switched on, the warning il­
luminates when at least
one door or the hood
or the rear lid is not closed . The symbol also
shows you
which door(s) or lid is not closed .
In the illustration
c:> fig. 14 it is the driver's
door and the left rear door.
On-Board Diagnostic
system (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL }
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)¢• in
the instrument cluster is part of the On-Board
Diagnostic (OBD II) system.
The warning/indicator light illuminates when
the ignition is switched on and goes out after
the engine starts and the idle has stabilized .
This indicates that the MIL is working proper ­
ly .
If the light does not go out after the engine
is started, or illuminates while you are driv­
ing, a malfunction may exist in the engine sys­
tem .
If the light illuminates, the catalytic con­
verter could be damaged.
Continue driving
with reduced power (avoid­
ing sustained high speeds and/or rapid accel­
erat ions) and have the condition corrected .
Contact your authorized Audi dealer .
If the light illuminates, the electronic speed limiter may also be malfunctioning. For more
information
c:> page 29, Electronic speed
limiter .
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate
c:> page 230.
On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the compo­
nents of your em iss ion contro l system . Each
monitored component in your engine system
has been assigned a code . In case of a mal­
function, the component will be identified
and the fault stored as a code in the control
module memory.
The MIL light may also illuminate if there is a
leak in the on-board fuel vapor recovery sys­
tem .
If the light illuminates after a refueling,
stop the vehicle and make sure the fuel filler cap is properly closed
c:> page 230.
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the
stored data can only be displayed using spe­
cial diagnostic equipment (generic scan tool
for OBO) .
In order to connect the specia l diagnostic
equipment, push the plug into the Data Link
Connector (OLC). The DLC is located to the
right of the hood release
c:> fig. 15.
Your authorized Aud i dealer or a qualified
service station can interpret the code and per­
form the necessary repair.
A WARNING ""-=--
Do not use the d iagnost ic connector for
personal use. Incorrect usage can cause
malfunctions, which can increase the risk
of a collision!

Removing the mechanical key

• Pull the mechanica l key @ out of the mas ­
ter key.
Using the mechan ica l key, you can:
- lock and unlock* the storage compartment
on the passenger's side

-lock and unlock the vehicle manually

-lock the front and rear passenger doors me­
chanically

- unlock the luggage compartment lid man­
ually

The check light @<=:> fig. 18 in the master key

• The check light turns on briefly once when a
button is pressed, and dur ing an "inqu iry"
by the convenience key system.

• If the check light does not come on, the
battery is dead and has to be replaced. In
add ition, when the battery is dead

• Remove the mechanical key c:> page 31.
• Press the re lease button ® c:> fig. 18 on the
battery holder and at the same time pull the
battery holder out of the master key in the
direction of the arrow .
• Install the new battery CR 2032 with the
"+ " sign facing down.
• Push the battery holder carefu lly into the
maste r key.
• Install the mechan ical key.
@ For the sake of the environment
D ispose of dead batteries properly so as
not to poll ute the environment.
@ Tips
The rep lacement battery must be the
same specifica tion as the o rigina l.
Electronic immobilizer
The immobilizer helps to prevent unauthor­
ized use of your vehicle .
A computer chip ins ide your key automatically
deact ivates the electron ic immobilizer when
the key is inside the vehicle . When you remove
the key from the vehicle, the elect ron ic immo ­
bilizer is automa tically ac tivated once aga in.
& WARNING
A lways take the key with you when you
leave the vehicle. The key can disarm the
e lectronic engine immobilizer and permit
an unauthorized person to start the engine
and enable operation of the vehicle sys­
tems such as power w indow or power sun-
roof leading to serious pe rsonal injury .

• Leave the master key with the service per­
sonnel for parking and keep the mechanical
key with you.
When the "valet pa rking" feature is activated:
- the unlocking button for the luggage com­
partment lid~ in the driver's doo r is inac­
t ive
- the button~ on the master key is inact ive
- the opening handle in the luggage compart-
ment lid is inactive.
The vehicle can be driven and locked and un­ locked with the master key . Access to the lug ­
gage compartment is blocked .
When the va let parking function is switched
on, the message

pears in the instrument cluster disp lay when
you switch the ign it ion on .
Sliding/tilting sunroof

@ Opening and closing
• To open the sunroof completely, slide the
button back briefly to the second level. •
To close the sun roof completely, slide the
button forward briefly to the second level

• To se lect a partially open pos ition, slide the
bu tton forward/back to the first level unt il
the roof reaches the desired position .
A wind deflector integrated into the sliding/
t il ting sunroof adapts automatically to the
speed and sunroof pos ition . This reduces wind
noise to a m inimum in all sunroof positions .
You can sti ll close or open the sunroof for up
to ten minutes after you have switched the ig­ nition
off . The sw itch is deact ivated once the
driver's or front passenger 's doo r is opened .
Solar prot ection
The solar protection opens automatica lly
when the sunroof opens.
Vehicles with a g lass pane l s u nroo f: the sun
shade can be opened and closed by hand
when the sunroof is closed.
Vehicles wi th a solar pa nel sunroof*: the
cl osed s unshade opens au tomatically when
t h e sunroof opens.
A WARNING
Pay careful attention when closing the
sliding/tilt ing sunroof -otherwise serious
i njury could result ! Always take t he key
with you w hen leav ing the veh icle .
(D Note
Always close your sliding/tilt ing sunroof
when leaving your veh icle. S udden rain can
cause damage to the interior equ ipment of
your vehicle, particularly the e lectronic
equipmen t.
