- Pressing the
!SET ! button when driv ing at
speeds below 20 mph (30 km/h), will au­
tomatically accelerate the vehicle to 20
mph (30 km/h), which is the minimum
speed that can be set.

cruise control off, the set speed is erased
from the system memory.
- You cannot switch the Electronic Stabili­
zation Control (ESC) to the SPORT mode

the adaptive cruise contro l system automati­
cally brakes to match that object's speed and
then maintains the stored distance.
If the ve­
hicle ahead accelerates, adaptive cruise con­
trol will also accelerate up to the stored
speed .
The higher the speed, the greater the distance
in yards (meters) ¢.&. . The

is recommended .

Depending on the driving situation and the
how the vehicle ahead is driving, the actual
distance may be more or less than these tar ­

Braking guard uses radar sensors and a video
camera. It also functions within the limits of
the system when adapt ive cruise control is
switched off .
What can braking guard do?
When detected in time, the system can assess
situations when a vehicle ahead brakes sud­
denly or if your own vehicle is traveling at a
h igh speed and approaching a vehicle up
ahead that is moving more slowly . Brak ing
guard does not react if it cannot detect the
situation.
The system advises you of various situations:
- The
distance warning is given if you are too
close to the vehicle ahead for a long time. If
the vehicle ahead brakes sharply, you will
not be able to avoid a collis ion. The indicator
light. in the display comes on.
- The
approach warning is given when a de­
tected vehicle up ahead in your lane is mov­
i ng much more slowly than you are or if it
brakes sharply . When this wa rning is given,
it may only be possible to avoid a collision
by swerving or braking sharply. Th e indicator
li ght . and indicator in the display will
warn you about the danger~

If you do not react fast enough or do not react
at all to the situation, braking guard wi ll inter·
vene by braking and the message

- If a collision is imminent, the system wi ll

sharply applying the brakes .
- If you do not react to the acute warning,
braking guard can brake wit h increas ing
force w ithin the limits of the system . This
reduces the vehicle speed in the event of a
collision.
- The system can initiate max imum brak ing
shortly before a collision

at high speeds occurs only in vehicles with
adapt ive cr uise control and side assist (p re
sense plus) .
- If the brak ing guard senses that you are not
braking hard enough when a collision is im·
minent, it can increase the brak ing force.
- The pre sense functions also engage when a
col lision is imminent ~

Which functions can be controlled?
You can switch braking guard and the dis­
tance/approach warn ing on or off in the MMI
~ page 99, Settings in the MMI.
A WARNING
-
Lack of attention can cause collisions, oth-
er accidents and serious personal injuries .
The braking guard is an assist system and
ca nnot prevent a collision by itself. The
driver must always intervene. The driver is
a lways respons ible for braking at the cor­
rect time.
- Always pay close attention to traffic,
even when the braking guard is switched
on. Be ready to intervene and be ready to
take comp lete control whenever necessa­
ry. Always keep the safe and legal dis­
tance between your vehicle and veh icles
up ahead .
- Braking guard works within limits and
will not respond outside the system

limits, for example w hen approaching a
stopped vehicle or stationary obstacle
(end of a traffic jam or veh icle that has
br oken down in traffic).
- Always remember that the radar sensor
for the braking guard works only withi n
defined detection and range limits that
may prevent the proper detection of oth­
er vehicles.
- The radar sensor's function and range
can be reduced by rain, snow and heavy
spray. Moving vehicles up ahead may not
be promptly detected or may not be de­
tected at al l.
- Reflective surfaces in cl ud ing crash barr i­
ers or t unnel entrances may impair the
f unction of the radar sensor .

-You can cance l the braking w ith increas­
i ng fo rce that is initiated by the system
by braking yo urself, by accelerating no­
ticeab ly or by swerving .

trip.
The driver message also appears if the system
is not available due to a malfunct ion or if the
ESC is not switched on¢ page
199. If this is
the case, the system w il l no t prov ide warnings
about a poss ible collision .
Braking guard : activated
This dr iver message appears if sharp brake
pressure was applied due to an acute warning.
ACC: Un availabl e!
ACC and Audi braking guard: not available
The system cannot detect moving vehicles up
ahead correctly and is switched off. The sen­
sors have been displaced or are not working
proper ly . The Audi pre sense funct ions may al­
so be affected. Drive to yo ur autho rized Audi
dealer or author ized A udi se rv ice facility im­
med iate ly to have the malfunction corrected.

Driving settings
Introduction
Audi drive select makes it possible to experi­
ence different types of vehicle settings in one
vehicle. The driver can select three
Comfort,
Auto
and Dynamic modes in the MMI to
switch between a sporty and a comfortable
driving mode.
You can a lso adjust the setting according to
your preferences in the
individual mode. For
example, you can combine settings such as a
sporty engine tuning with comfortab le steer­
ing.
A WARNING
Improper use of the Audi drive select can
cause collisions, other accidents and seri­
ous personal injury.
Description
The vehicle setup in each mode depends on
the vehicle's features. The engine, transmis­
sion, steering, reversible safety belt tension­
ers and adaptive air suspension are always in­
volved.
Engine and transmission
Depending on the mode, the engine and the
transmission respond quicker or in a more bal­
anced manner to acce le rator pedal move­
ments. In the sporty dynamic mode, the
transmission shifts at higher RPMs.
Air suspension
The adaptive air suspension/adaptive air sus­
pension sport*
(Ai r suspension in the MMI) is
an electronically control led air suspension and
damping system. They are adjusted depend­
ing on the selected driving mode, the driver's
steering, braking and acceleration input and
the road surface, vehicle speed and load. A
sporty setting is generally used in vehicles
with adaptive air suspension sport*. The
vehicle clearance varies depending on the
selected mode and the speed .
The highway setting is activated automatically
when you drive above 75 mph (120 km/h) for
more than
30 seconds in the auto or dynamic
mode. The ground clearance is increased auto­
matically if the speed drops below
44 mph
(70 km/h) for more than 120 seconds.
Steering
The steering adapts in terms of steering effort
and steering ratios . Indirect steering that
moves easily, like the steering in comfort
mode, is best suited to long drives on a high­
way. In contrast, dynamic mode provides
sporty, direct steering .
The following applies to vehicles with dynamic
steering* : the steering ratio changes based on
vehicle speed in order to maintain optimum
steering effort for the driver at all times. This
sets the steering to be less sensitive at higher
speeds in order to provide improved vehicle
control. At reduced speeds, however, steer ing
is more direct in order to keep the steering ef­
fort as minimal as poss ible when the driver is
maneuvering the vehicle. At low and average
speeds, dynamic steering additionally pro ­
vides more responsive steering performance.
Sport differential*
As a component of the all whee l dr ive system
(quattro)
r:!> page 202, the Sport differential*
distributes the driving power to the rear axle
depending on the situation . The distribution
of power varies depending on the selected
mode, from balanced (comfort) to agile (dy­
namic). The goal is a high level of agility and
ability to accelerate on curves . The vehicle is
very respons ive to steering .
Curve light*
The curve light adapts to driving on curves.
The pivoting action and the lighting are also adapted to the mode.
Adaptive cruise control*
The behavior when accelerating can be adjust­
ed from comfortab le to sporty, depending on ..,.

the drive select mode. Adaptive cruise control
also responds to the driving behavior of the
veh icle ahead in a more conservative or sporty
manner.
E ngin e soun d*
The sound of the engine is adapted to the se­
l ected mode and ranges from subtle to sporty.

- Make sure there is eno ugh clea rance
above and below the veh icle when park­
i ng. The height of the vehicle can change
once it is parked due to temperature
fluctuations, changes to the load cond i­
tions and changes to the dr iv ing modes,
which can affect clearance.
- When transporting the veh icle on a car
carrier, tra in, ship or by other means, on­
ly tie the veh icle down at the running
surface of the tires, which is the outer
circumference. Secur ing the vehicle at
the axle components, s uspension struts
or tow ing eyes is not pe rm itted because
the pressure in the air suspension stru ts
can cha nge during transport . The vehicle
may not be sec ured s ufficient ly if this
happens.
- If you a re going to tow a trailer, you
must activate the trailer operation mode

- In some models, the maximum vehicle
speed can only be reached in the
auto
and dynami c modes.
- Se lecting the

sporty shifting characteristics . The S
gear position engages automatically.
- In vehicles that have dynamic steering*,
operating noise is heard when starting or
stopping the engine. Th is does not indi­
cate a problem.

Selecting the driving mode
You con choose between Comfort, Auto, Dy­
namic and Individual.

You can change the driving mode when the ve­
hicle is stationary or wh ile driving. If traffic
permits, after changing modes, briefly take
your foot off the accelerator pedal so that the recently selected mode is also activated for

prevent the vehicle from "creeping", you
must keep your foot on the brake in all
selector lever positions except P and N
when the eng ine is running. Do not inad­
vertently press the accelerator pedal
when the veh icle is stationary. Otherwise
the vehi cle will s tart to move immediate­
ly, even if the park ing brake is set. This
cou ld result in a crash.
- Do not ride the brakes or p ress the brake
peda l too often or too long when dr iv ing
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substant ially re­
duces b raking performance, increases
braking distance or ca uses comp lete fail­
ure of the brake system.
Hill descent control
The hill descent control system assists the
driver when driving down declines.
H ill descent control is activated when these­
lector lever is in D/S and you press the brake
pedal. The transmission automatically selects
a gear that is suitab le for the incline. Hill de­
scent control tries to maintain the speed ach­
ieved at the time of braking, within physical
a nd techn ical limitations.
It may st ill be nec­
essary to adjust the speed with the brakes.
H ill descent control switches off once the de­
cline levels out or you press the accelerator
pedal.
Hill descent control is also activated when the
speed is set by starting the cruise contro l sys­
tem c::>
page 90.
A WARNING
Hill descent control can not overcome
phys ical limitations, so it may not be able
to main tain a constant speed under a ll
condi tions. Always be re ady to app ly the
br akes.

Kick-down enables maximum acceleration.
When you press the accelerator pedal down
beyond the resistance point, the automatic
transmission downshifts into a lower gear, de­
pending on veh icle speed and eng ine RPM .
It
shifts up into the next higher gear once the
maximum specified engine RPM is reached . ..,.
