If side ass ist switches off by itself, the LED in

The radar sensors' vision is affected. Do not
cover the area in front of the sensors with bike
wheels, stickers, dirt or other objects. Clean
the area in front of the sensors, if necessary

Side assist cannot be swi tched on temporarily
because there is a malfunction (for example,
the battery charge leve l may be too low) .

Depending on your vehicle's equ ipment, vari­
ous parking a ids wi ll help yo u when pa rk ing
and maneuve ring.
The
parking sy stem plu s with rear view cam­
era
ass ists you when park ing by aud ibly and
visua lly indicating objec ts detected
in front of
and behind the vehicle. The rear view came ra
shows the area behind the vehicle in the Info ­
tainment display . This display assists yo u
when you are cross or paralle l pa rking
co page 121.
The pe ripheral camera s assist yo u with pa rk­
ing and maneuvering . You are aided by various
cameras depending on the vehicle equipment
leve l
co page 124. In add it ion, you are assist­
ed by the functions from the sensors

A WARNING
- Always look fo r traff ic and check the area
around you r vehicle by looking at it di­
rect ly as we ll. The parking sys tem canno t
rep lace t he drive r's a ttent ion. The dr iver
is a lways respons ible for safety during
parking and for all other maneuvers.
- Please note tha t some sur faces, such as
clothing, are not detected by the system .
- Sensors and cameras have blind spots in
wh ich peop le and objects cannot be de­
tected . Be especially cautious of children
and animals.
- The sensors can be displaced by impacts or damage to the radiato r grille, bumpe r,
wheel housing and the underbody. The park ing systems may become impaired
as a result. Have your authorized Audi
dealer or qualified workshop check their
f unction.
- Make sure the sensors are not covered by
stickers, deposits or any othe r obstruc­
t ions as it may impair the senso r func- tion. Fo

- Some objects are not detected by the
system under certain ci rcumstances:
- Objects such as barrie r chains, trailer
draw bars, vertical poles or fe nces
- Objects above the sensors such as wall
extensions
- Objects w ith specific surfaces or struc­
tures such as chain link fences or pow­
de r snow.
- If you conti nue driving closer to a low- ly­
ing object, it may disappea r from the
sensor range. Note that you w ill no lon­
ger be warned about this obstacle.

Parking next to obstacles
If there is an obstacle (such as a wa ll) next to
the parking space, position the vehicle so
there is mo re space on that side. Position the
long side of the blue surface so that there is
sufficient space from the obstacle. The sur ­
face must not be touching. You will also need
to start turning the steering wheel much ear­
lier . The b lue curve

the obstacle and should have suffic ient room.

Error messages

There is an error in the system if the LED in
the
P •1! b utton is bli nki ng and you hear a con­
tinuous alarm for a few seconds afte r switch­
ing on the parking system or when the park -ing system
is already activa ted . If the error is
not co rrected before you switc h off the igni­
t ion, the LED in the
P, g! button wi ll blink the
next t ime yo u sw itch on t he parking system by
shifting into reverse.
If a sensor is fa ulty, the !:l4 symbol will appear
i n front of/behind the vehicle in the Infota in­
ment display . If a rear sensor is faulty, only
obstacles t hat are in the front detection area
are shown . If a front senso r is fau lty, o nly ob ­
stacles that are in the rear area are show n.
Peripheral camera s*
There is also a system error if:
- t he
°C8l" symbol appears in the display and
t he corresponding display area is shown in
b lue. The camera is not working in this area.

For vehicles us ing the trailer socket, the park­
ing system rear sensors do not tu rn on wh en
yo u shift i nto reverse gea r or whe n you press
the
P' #! bu tton. This res ults in the following re­
strictions:
T he re is no distance warn ing fo r th e rea r. T he
fron t sensors remain ac tivated. The visua l dis­
play sw itches to the trailer towing mode. The
r ear view camera image will no t show the or i­
entatio n lines and the blue surfaces.

- Never put the forward-facing child re­
straint up aga inst or very near the instru­
ment panel.
- Always move the passenger seat into its
rearmost position in the seat's fore and
aft adjustment range, as far away from
the a irbag as poss ible, before installing
the forward-facing child restraint. The backrest must be adjusted to an upr ight
posit io n.
- Make sure that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF
light comes on and stays on all the
t ime whenever the ignition is switched
on.
Advanced Airbag System components
The front passenger seat in your vehicle has a
lot of very important parts of the Advanced
Airbag System in it. These parts include the
weight-sensing mat, sensors, wiring, brack­
ets, and more. The function of the system in
the front passenger seat is checked by the
electronic control un it when the ign it ion is on .
The control unit mon itors the Advanced Air­
bag System and turns the airbag indicator
l ight on whe n a malfunction in the system
components is de tected. The function of the
ai rbag indicator light is described in greater
detai l be low . Because the front passenger
seat contains important parts of the Ad­
vanced A irbag System, you must take care to
prevent it from be ing damaged. Damage to
the seat may prevent the Advanced Airbag for
the front passenger seat from doing its job in
a crash .
The front Advanced Airb ag System
con sis ts of the following:
- Crash sensors in the front of the veh icle that
measure veh icle acceleration/deceleration
to provide information to the Advanced Air­
bag System about the seve rity of the c rash.
- An electron ic co ntro l unit, w ith integ rated
crash sensors for fron t and side impacts.
T he contro l unit "dec ides " whether to fire
the front airbags based on the information received from the crash sensors . The contro l unit also "decides" whether the sa
fety be lt
pretensioners shou ld be activated.
- An Advanced Airbag with gas generato r and
contro l valve for the driver inside the steer­
ing wheel h ub.
- An Advanced Airbag with gas gene rator and
contro l valve inside the instrument panel for
the front passenger .
- A weight -sensing mat under the upho lstery
padding of the front passenger seat cushion
that measures the total weight on the seat.
The informat ion registered is sent continu­
ously to the electronic control unit to regu­ late deployment of the front Advanced Air­
bag on the passenger side.
- An airbag monitoring system and indicator
light in the instrument cluster~
page 161 .
-A sensor in each front seat registers the dis­
tance betwee n the respective seat a nd the
steer ing whee l o r inst rument panel. The in­
formation registered is sent cont inuous ly to
t he ele ctron ic contro l uni t to regula te de­
p loyment of the front Adva nced A irbags .
- The
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes
on and st ays on in the center of the instr u­
ment p anel

you when the front Advanced Airbag on the
passenger side has been turned off .
- A sensor below the safety be lt latch for the
front seat passenger to measure the tension
on t he safety be lt . The tension on the safety
be lt and the weight registered by the
weight-sensing mat he lp the control unit
"decide" whether the front airbag for the
front passenger seat should be turned off or not
~ page 153, Child restraints on the
front seat -some important things to
know.
- A sensor in the safety belt latch fo r the driv­
er and fo r the fro nt seat passenger that
senses whether that safety bel t is latched or
no t and transmi ts this information to t he
electronic control unit.

prevent the front airbag from work ing
properly.

-Improper repair or disassembly of the
front passenger and driver seat will pre­
vent the Advanced Airbag System from
functioning properly.
- Repairs to the front passenger seat must
be performed by qualified and properly
trained workshop personnel.
- Never remove the front passenger or
driver seat from the vehicle.
- Never remove the upholstery from the
front passenger seat.
- Never disassemble or remove parts from
the seat or disconnect wires from it.
- Never carry sharp objects in your pockets
or place them on the seat. If the weight­
sensing mat in the passenger seat is
punctured it cannot work properly.
- Never carry things on your lap or carry
objects on the passenger seat. Such
items can increase the weight registered
by the weight-sensing mat and send the
wrong information to the airbag control
unit.
- Never store items under the front pas­
senger seat. Parts of the Advanced Air­
bag System under the passenger seat
could be damaged, preventing them and
the airbag system from working proper­
ly.
- Never place seat covers or replacement
upholstery that have not been specifical­
ly approved by Audi on the front seats.
- Seat covers can prevent the Advanced
Airbag System from recognizing child re­
straints or occupants on the front pas­
senger seat and prevent the side airbag in the seat backrest from deploying prop­
erly.
- Never use cushions, pillows, blankets or
similar items on the front passenger
seat. The additional padding will prevent
the weight-sensing mat in the seat from
accurately registering the child restraint
or person on the seat and prevent the
Advanced Airbag System from function­
ing properly.
- If you must use a child restraint on the
front passenger seat and the child re-

straint manufacturer's instructions re­
quire the use of a towel, foam cushion or
something else to properly position the
child restraint, make certain that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes
on and stays on whenever the child re­
straint is installed on the front passen­
ger seat.
- If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
does not come on and stay on, immedi­
ately install child restraint in a rear seat­
ing position and have the airbag system
inspected by your Audi dealer.
How the Advanced Airbag System
components work together
The front Advanced Airbag System and the
side airbags supplement the protection of­
fered by the front three-point safety belts
with pretensioners and load limiters and the
adjustable head restraints to help reduce the
risk of injury in a wide range of accident and
crash situations. Be sure to read the impor­
tant information about safety and heed the
WARNINGS in this chapter.
Deployment of the Adv a need Airbag System
and the activation of the safety belt preten­
sioners depend on the deceleration measured
by the crash sensors and registered by the
electronic control unit. Crash severity depends
on speed and deceleration as well as the mass
and stiffness of the vehicle or object involved
in the crash .
On the passenger side, regardless of safety
belt use, the airbag will be turned off if the
weight on the passenger seat is less than the
amount programmed in the electronic control
unit. The front airbag on the passenger side
will also be turned off if one of the child seats
that has been certified under Federal Motor
Vehicle Safety Standard 208 has been recog­
nized on the seat. The

senger side has been turned off

Other things that can affect Advanced
Airbag performance
Changing the vehicle's suspension system can
change the way that the Advanced Airbag Sys­
tem performs in a crash. For example, using
tire-r im combinations not approved by Aud i,
lowering the vehicle, changing the stiffness of
the suspension, including the sp rings, suspen­
sion struts, shock absorbe rs etc. can change
the forces that are measured by the a irbag
sensors a nd sent to the electron ic control
un it. Some suspension changes ca n, for exam­
p le, increase the force levels measured by the
sensors and make the airbag system deploy in
crashes in which it would not dep loy if the
changes had not been made. Other kinds of
changes may reduce the force levels meas­
ured by the sensors and prevent the airbag
from deploying when it should .
A WARNING
Changing the vehicle 's s uspension includ­
ing use of unapproved tire-rim combina­
tions can change Advan ced Airbag per­
formance and increase the risk of serio us
personal injury in a crash.
- Never install suspens io n components
t hat do not have the same performance
characteristics as the components origi­
nally installed on your vehicle .
- Never use tire-rim combinat ions that
have not been approved by A udi.
A WARNING
-
Items stored between the safety belt
buckle and the center console can cause
the sensors in the buckle to send the
wrong informat ion to the electronic con­
trol modu le and prevent the Advanced A ir­
bag System from work ing properly.
- Always make sure that nothing can inter-
fere w ith the safety belt buckles and that
they are not obstructed .
Knee airbags
Description of knee airbags
The knee airbag system can provide supple­
mental protection to properly restrained
front seat occupants.

about the same height in the instrument pan­
el underneath the glove compartment.
T he knee airbag offers addi tional protection
to the driver 's and passenger's knees and up­
per and lower thigh areas and supplements
the protection provided by the safety belts.
If the front airbags dep loy, the knee a irbags
also dep loy in frontal collisions w hen the de­
ployment threshold stored in the control unit
is met

In addition to their normal safety f unction,
safety belts help keep the driver or front pas­
senger in position in a fronta l collision so that
the a irbags can provide supplemental protec­
t ion .
The airbag system is not a substitute for your safety belt . Rather, it is part of the overa ll oc­
cupant restra int system in your vehicle. A l­
ways remember that the a irbag system can
only he lp to protect you if you are wearing
you r safety belt and wearing it properly. This
is why you should always wear your safety
belt, no t jus t because the law requires you to
do so

Fully inflated airbags in combination with
properly worn safety belts slow down and lim­
it the occupant's forward movement and help
to reduce the risk of injury.
Important safety instructions on the
knee airbag system
Airbags are only supplemental restraints. Al­
ways wear safety belts correctly and ride in a
proper seating position.
There is a lot that you and your passengers
must know and do to help the safety belts and
airbags to provide supplemental protection .
A WARNING
An inflating knee airbag can cause serious
injury. Wearing safety belts incorrectly and
improper seating positions increase the
r isk of serious personal injury and death
whenever a vehicle is being used .
- The knee airbag system cannot protect
you properly if you are seated too close
to any of the airbag locations. When ad­
justing their seat positions, it is impor­
tant that both the driver and the front passenger keep their upper bodies and
knees at the following minimum safe
distances:
- at least 10 inches (25 cm) between the
chest and the steering wheel/instru­
ment panel.
- at least 4 inches (10 cm) between the
knees and the lower part of the instru­
ment panel.
- T he risk of personal injury increases if
you lean forward or to the side, or if the seat is improperly positioned and you are
not wearing your safety belt. The risk in­
creases even more should the airbag de­
ploy.
- Always make sure that the knee airbag
can inflate without interference. Objects
between you and the airbag can increase
the risk of injury in an accident by inter­
fering with the way the airbag dep loys or by being
pushed into you as the airbag
deploys.
- Never let anybody, especially children
o r anima ls ride in the footwell in front
of the passenger seat. If the airbag de­
ploys, this can result in serious or fatal
injuries.
- Never carry objects of any kind in the
footwell area in front of the driver's or
passenger's seat. Bulky objects (shop­
ping bags, for example) can interfere
with or prevent proper deployment of
the airbag. Small objects can be
thrown through the vehicle if the air­ bag deploys and injure you or your pas­
sengers.
- Make sure there are no cracks, deep scratches or other damage in the area of
the instrument panel where the knee air­
bags are located.
- If children are incorrectly seated, their
risk of injury increases in a collision

Side airbags
Description of side airbags
The airbag system can provide supplemental
protection to properly restrained occupants.

The side airbags are located in the sides of the
front seat backrests

by the word "AIRBAG".
The side airbag system basically consists of:
-the electronic control module and external

-the two side airbags located in the sides of
the front backrests
- two rear side airbags
- the a irbag warn ing light in the inst rument
cl us ter.
The airbag system is monitored electron ically
to make certain that it is functioning prope rly
at all times . Each time you swi tch on the igni­
tion, the ai rbag system indica tor ligh t will
come on for a few seconds (sel f diagnostics).
The s ide a irbag system supp lements the safe­
ty belts and can help to reduce the risk of in­
ju ry to the dr ive r's, front and rear passenger's
upper to rso on the side of the vehicle that is
struck in a side co llision . The airbag deploys
only in side impacts and on ly when the vehicle
acceleration registered by the control unit is
h igh enough . If this rate is below the refer­
ence value programmed into the control un it,
the side cu rtain airbag will not be trigge red,
even thoug h the ca r may be badly damaged as
a result of the collision. It is not possible to
define an airbag trigge ring range that will
cover eve ry possible angle of impact, since the
circumstances will vary considerably between
one co llision and another . Important factors
include, for examp le, the nat ure (hard or soft)
of the impac ting object, the angle of impact,
veh icle speed, etc.

Aside from the ir norma l safety function, safe­
ty belts work to he lp keep the driver or front
passenger in posit ion i n the event of a side
coll is ion so that the side a irbags can provide
p rotection .
The airbag system is
not a substitute for your

ways remember that the side airbag system

It is important to remembe r that wh ile the
suppleme nta l side airbag system is designed
to reduce the likelihood of ser io us injuries,
other injur ies, for example, swelling, bru is ing,
and minor abrasions can also be associated
with deployed side airbags . Remember too,
s ide a irbags w ill dep loy only once and only in
ce rtain kinds of accidents -your safety belts
are always the re to offe r protection .
Vehicle damage, repair costs or even the lack

tion. In some coll is ions, bot h front and side
a irbags may inflate. Remember too, t hat ai r­
bags will deploy only once and on ly in certain
k inds of col lisions -yo ur sa fety belts are a l­
ways there to offer protection in those acci­ dents in which airbags are not supposed to
deploy or when they have a lready deployed .
The side airbag system will not deploy:
- when the ignit ion is switched off
- in side co llisions whe n the accele ra tion
meas ured by t he sensor is too low
- in front-e nd collisions
- in rear-end collisions
- in rollovers.
In some types of accidents the front airbags,
s ide curtain airbags and s ide a irbags may be
triggered together.
A WARNING
- Safety belts and the airbag system will
only provide protection when occupants
are in the proper seating position
