A WARNING ,~ -
- Always pay attention to traffic even when
the cruise control is sw itched on. You are al­
ways respons ible for your speed and the dis­
tance between your vehicle and other
vehicles.
- For safety reasons, the cruise control should
not be used in the city, in stop-and-go traf­
fic, on twisting roads and when road condi­
tions are poor (such as ice, fog, gravel,
heavy ra in and hydroplaning) -risk of acci­
dent.
- T urn off the cruise control temporar ily when
entering turn lanes, highway exit lanes or in
construction zones.
- Please note that inadvertently "resting"
your foot on the accelerator pedal causes
the cruise control not to brake. This is be­
cause the cruise control is overridden by the
driver's acceleration.
- If a brake system ma lfunction such as over­
heating occurs when the cruise control sys­
tem is switched on, the braking function in
the system may be switched off. The other
cruise control functions remain active as
long as the indicator light

Changing speed

Driving
If, however, you exceed your saved speed by
6 mph (10 km/h) for longer than S minutes, the
cruise control w ill turn off temporarily. The green

rep laced with a white symbol. The saved speed
remains the same .
Presetting your speed
You can preset your desired speed while the vehi­
cle is not moving.

Introduction
Applies to: vehicles with Audi adaptive cruise control
The adaptive cruise contro l system assists the
driver by regulating vehicle speed and helping to
maintain a set distance to the veh icle ahead ,
within the limits of the system. If the system de­
tects a moving vehicle up ahead, adaptive cruise
control can brake and then accelerate your vehi­
cle. This helps to make driving more comfortable
both on long highway stretches and in stop-and­
go traffic.
The braking guard system can warn you about an
impending collision and initiate braking maneu­
vers
c::> page 96.
Adaptive cruise control and braking guard have
technical limitations that you must know, so
please read this section carefully, understand
how the system works and use them properly at
all times.
General information

The areas that contain the radar and ultrasonic

structed with dirt, insects, snow or ice that will
interfere with the adaptive cruise control system
and braking guard. For information on cleaning,

The function of the adaptive cruise control sys­
tem and braking guard is limited under some
conditions:
- Objects can only be detected when they are
w ithin sensor range
c::>page 92, fig. 99.
- Th e system has a limited ability to detect ob­
jects that are a short distance ahead, off to the
side of you r vehicle or moving into your lane .
- Some kinds of vehicles are hard to detect; for
example motorcycles, veh icles with high
ground clearance or overhanging loads may be
detected when it is too late or they may not be
detected at all.
- When driving through curves

A WARNING
Always pay attention to traffic when adaptive
cruise control is switched on and braking
guard is active. As the driver, you are still re­
sponsible for starting and for maintaining
speed and distance to other objects. Braking
guard is used to assist you. The driver must
always take act ion to avoid a collision . The
driver is always respons ible for braking at the
correct time.
- Improper use of adaptive cruise control can cause collisions , other accidents and serious
personal injury.
- Never let the comfort and convenience that
adapt ive cru ise control and braking guard
offe r dist ract you from the need to be alert
to traffic conditions and the need to remain
in fu ll contro l of your ve hicle at all times,
- Always remember that the adaptive cruise
control and braking guard have limits -they
will no t slow the vehicle down or maintain
the set distance when you drive towards an
obstacle or something on or near the road
that is not moving, s uch as vehicles stopped
in a traff ic jam, a stalled or disab led vehicle.
If registered by the radar sensors, vehicles
or obstacles that are not moving can trigger
a co llision warning and if confirmed by the
video camera, an acute co llision warning.

What can adaptive cruise control do?
The adaptive cruise control system uses video, ra­
dar and ultrasound . Moving vehicles ahead can
be recognized up to about 650 feet (200 m)
away .
On open roads with no traffic, adaptive cru ise
control works like a regular cruise control sys­
tem. The stored speed is ma inta ined. When ap­
proaching a moving vehicle detected up ahead,
the adaptive cruise cont rol system automatically
slows down to match that vehicle's speed and
then maintains the distance that the driver previ­ ously stored. As soon as the system does not de­
tect a vehicle up ahead, adaptive cruise control
accelerates back up to the stored speed.
In stop-and-go traffic, adaptive cruise control can
brake until the vehicle stops and accelerate again
under certain conditions and if this is possible
within the system's limits and capabilities
¢ page 94 . Adaptive cruise control will not
make an emergency stop .
Which functions can be controlled?
When you switch adaptive cruise control on, you
can set the current speed as the "control speed"
¢ page 92, Switching on and off.
When driving, you can stop cruise control
¢ page 94 or change the speed ¢ page 93 at
any time.

You can set any speed between 20 mph and 95
mph (30 and 150 km/h) .
Indicator lamps and messages in the instrument
cluster display inform you about the current sys­
tem status and settings.
An additional indicator appears in the Head-up

Driving in stop -and-go traffic

The adaptive cruise control system also assists
you in stop-and-go traffic.
If a previous detected
vehicle ahead stops, your vehicle will brake to a
stop, within the limits of the system.
• To resume driving with adaptive cruise control,
tap the accelerator pedal or
• Pull the lever toward you into position @

(Di Tips
-If adaptive cruise control is active and your
vehicle does not start driving as expected
after pulling the lever once, you can start
out again by tapping the accelerator pedal.
- If an obstacle is detected when your vehicle
starts driving, the system will prompt you
to take over<=>

drive more slowly when starting. This may
also happen in some situations when no ob­
stacle is apparent.

If you s low ly pas s a vehi cle that s ide ass ist has
de te cted ( the differe nce in speed between t he
vehicle and you r vehicle is less than 9 mph or 15
km/h), the display in the exterior mirror turns on
as soon as the vehicle enters your blind spot.
T he disp lay w ill not turn on if you quickly pass a
vehicle th at side ass ist h as de te cte d (t he differ­
ence in speed between the vehicle and your vehi ­
cle is greater tha n 9 mp h or 15 km/h).
Functional limitations
The radar se nsors are des igned to detect the le ft
and right adj ace nt lane s when the ro ad l anes are
the normal width . In certa in situations, the dis­
play in the exterior mirror may turn on eve n
though there is no vehicle located in the area
that is critical for a lane change. For example:
- if the lanes a re narrow or i f yo ur are dr iv ing on
the edge of you r lane. If t his is the case, the
system may have detected th e vehicle in anoth ­
er lane that is
not adjacent to your cu rrent lane.
- if you are dr iv ing through a curve. Si de assist
may react to a vehicle that is one lane over
from the adjacent lane.
- if side assist reacts to ot her objects (such as
high or disp laced guard ra ils).
- In poor weather conditions. The side assist
fu nctions a re limited .

Side assist sw itches off automatically when a fac­
tory-installed trailer hitch is connected to the
e lectr ical connector on the trailer . Th ere is no
g ua rantee the syste m will sw itch off when usi ng
a retrofitted tra ile r hitc h. D o not use s ide assist
when towing a t railer.

Engine sound *
The sou nd of the engine is adapted to the select­
ed mode and ranges from subt le to sporty.
(D Note
- Make sure there is enough cle arance above
and below t he vehicle when parking. The
height of the vehicle can change once it is
parked due to temperature f luctuations,
changes to the load conditions and changes
to the driving modes, which can affect clear­
ance.
- When transporting the vehicle on a car car­
rier, tra in, ship or by other means, only t ie
the vehicle down at the running surface of
the tires, which is the outer circumference.
Securing the vehicle at the axle compo­
nents, suspe ns ion struts or towing eyes is
not permitted be cause the press ure in the
air suspension struts can change dur ing
transport . The vehicle may not be secured
sufficiently if this happens .
-If yo u are going to tow a tra ile r, you m ust
activate the trailer operation mode

- In some models, the maximum vehicle
speed can only be reached in the
auto and
dynamic modes.
- Se lecting the
d ynami c mode resu lts i n spor­
ty shifting characteristics. The S gear posi­
tion engages a utomatically.
- In vehicles that have dynamic steering*, op ­
erating noise is heard when starting or stop­ ping the engine. This does not indicate a
problem.

- In vehicles w ith sport differential*, the dy­
namic mode is deactivated when towing a
trailer .
Selecting the driving mode
You con choose between Comfort, Auto , Dynamic
and Individual .

You must press the brake pedal to engage a se­ lector lever position when the engine is runn ing
while the vehicle is stationary. The arrows
c:::> fig . 125 indicate when you need to press the
button on the selector lever.
The selector lever does not lock if you shift from D to R within one second. This a llows you to
"rock" the vehicle to free it when it is stuck.
P -Par k
The whee ls are loc ked in this pos it ion. On ly shift
into park when the vehicle is stationary

You can on ly shift out of park when the engine is
running and you are pressing the brake pedal.

I f you sw itch the engine off when N is engaged,
the transmission remains in N for approximately
30 minutes and then Pis engaged .

R - Reverse
The reverse gear is engaged in this pos ition. On ly
select reverse when the vehicle is stat iona ry and
the eng ine is r unning at idle speed

and move the selector lever into the R position.
The back-up lights turn on when yo u select the R
se lector lever posit ion while the engine is run­
ning.
Autom atic tran sm iss ion
N -Neutral
The tra nsmission is in idle in th is position. To en­
gage the N selector leve r position, press the but ­
ton on the selecto r lever and shift into the N po­
sition .
If you swi tch the eng ine off when N is engaged ,
the transmission remains in N for approximately
30 minutes and then Pis engaged.
You cannot se lect t he N pos it ion when the igni ­
t ion is swit ched off. When dr iv ing th rough an au ­
tomatic car was h, fi rst select the N position and
then switch the engine off

The veh icle cannot be lo cked when the se lector
lever is in the N position .
DIS -Position for driving forw ard
In the D/S position, the transmission can be op ­
erated either in the normal mode Dor in the
spo rt mode S. Yo u can only se lect the S se lector
lever posit ion when D is engaged . Move t he selec­
tor leve r bac k to engage the S selector lever posi­
tion . To select the D selector lever position again
when S is engaged, move the se lector lever back
c:::> .&. . To shift from N to D when traveling at
speeds below 1 mph (2km/h), press the brake pedal and select the D selector lever pos it ion
c:::> .&. .
In the norm al mode D, the transmission auto­
matically selects the suitable gear ratio . It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and driving
style.
Se lect the
sport mode S for sporty driving . Th e
vehicle makes full use of the eng ine 's power.
Sh ift ing may become noticeable when accelerat­
i ng .
The S se lector lev er position engages automati­
ca lly when you select the dynamic mode in Audi
drive select.
A WARNING ,.___
- Never engage R or P while driving . It could
cause a crash .

Automatic transmissio n
-Power is sti ll transmitted to the w heels
w hen the eng ine is r unning at idle. To pre­
vent the veh icle from "creeping", you must
keep your foot on the brake in all selector
lever positions except P and N when the en­
gine is runn ing . Do not inadvertently press
t h e accelerator pedal when the vehicle is
s tationa ry. Otherwise the vehicle will start
to move immediately. This cou ld happen
even if the parking brake is activated.
- Before opening the hood, se lect the P sele c­
tor leve r pos ition and se t the park ing bra ke .
This reduces the risk of a crash . Always read
and follow the applicab le warnings
<=> page 220.
- Never get out of the driver's seat when the
engine is running.
- If you must get out of the vehicle, move the
selector lever securely into the P position
and apply the parking brake.
(D Tips
- If you un intent ionally shift in to the N selec­
tor lever position whi le driving, ta ke your
foot off the accelerator pedal and wait for
the engine to slow down unt il it is idling be­
fore yo u shift into D or S.

on the locking mechanism .
