ferent construction can differ greatly even if they are the
same size. If there is not
enough clearance, the tires or
the vehicle can be damaged
and this can reduce driving
safety and increase the risk of
an accident .
-Only use tires that are more
than six years old when abso-

-Do not use run-flat tires on
your vehicle . Using them when
not permitted can lead to ve­

-Driving quickly through curves, rapid acceleration and heavy

Wheel bolts
W heel bo lt s must be clean and loosen/t ighten
easi ly.
Rims
R ims with a bol ted rim ring * or w it h bolted wheel
covers * consist of m ultip le pieces . These compo­
nents we re bolted together using specia l bolts
a nd a speci al procedu re. You must not repair o r
d is a ssemble them¢

A WARNING
Whee l bolts that a re tightened or repaired in­
co rrectly can become loose and result in loss
o f vehicle control, which increases the risk of
an acc ident. For the correct t ightening specifi­
cat io n, see¢
page 314.
- Always keep the wheel bolts and the
th reads in the whee l hub clean and free of
grease.
- Only use wheel bolts that fit the rim.
- Always have damaged rims repaired by an
autho rized Aud i dealer or authorized Aud i
Service Facility. Never repair or d isassemble
rims yourse lf, because this increases the risk
of an accident .
Winter tires
Winte r ti res s ignificantly improve the veh icle's
handling when d riving i n w inte r condit io n s. Be­
cause of the ir constr uction (width, compound,
t read pattern) , summe r ti res provide less trac ­
tion on ice and snow.

The effectiveness of wi nter tires is reduced g reat­
l y when the tread is wo rn down to a depth of
0.157 in ( 4 mm). The characte ris tic s of winter
ti res a lso decrease g rea tly as the t ire ages, re­
gard less o f the remaining t read.

- Never drive faster than the maximum pe r­
m itted speed for your tires . This could cause
the t ires to heat up too much. This increases
the risk of an accident because it can cause
the t ire to burst .
- Always adapt your driving to the road and
traffic conditions . Drive carefully and reduce
your speed on icy or slippery roads . Even
winter t ires can lose t ract io n on black ice .
@ For the sake of the environment
Reinstall summer tires at the appropr iate
time, because they prov ide better handling
when roads are free of snow and ice. Summer
tires cause less road no ise, tire wear and fuel
consumpt ion.

You can also use all season tires instead of

stances should it be used to lift heavy

- Support the veh icle secure ly with appropri­
ate stands if work is to be performed under­
neath the vehicle; otherwise, there is a po ­
tent ial risk for injury .
- Never use the jack supplied with your Audi
on anothe r vehicle, particularly on a heav ier
one . The jack is only suitable for use on the
vehicle it came w ith.

Replacing wheels
Before changing a wheel
Observe the following precautions for your own
and your passenger's safety when changing a
wheel .

WARNING
You or your passengers co uld be injured while
chang ing a wheel if you do not follow these
safety precautions:

-If you have a flat tire, move a safe distance
off the road. Turn off the eng ine, turn the
emergency flashers on and use other warn­ ing dev ices to alert other motorists .
- Make sure that passengers wait in a safe
p lace away from the vehicle and well away
from the road and traff ic .
- To help prevent the veh icle from moving
suddenly and possib ly slipping off the jack,
always fully set the park ing brake and block
the wheel d iagonally opposi te the wheel be­
ing changed. When one front whee l is lifted
off the groun d, p lacing the Automatic
Transmission in "P" (Park) w ill
not prevent
the vehicle from mov ing.
- Before you change a wheel, be sure the
g round is leve l and firm. If necessary, use a
sturdy board under the jack .
- Always s tore the vehicle tool kit, the jack
and the replaced tire in the luggage com­
partment

Befo re c hanging the w heel, you must activate
t he jacking mode, so that the a utomat ic co n ­
tro ls for the Adaptive Air Suspension do not
make it more difficult to lift the vehicle with

Changing a wheel
When you change a wheel, follow the sequence
described below step-by-step and in exactly that
order .
1. Activate the vehicle jack mode ¢ page 315 .
2. Remove the decorative wheel cover *. For
more detai ls see also

with wheel bolt caps.
3. Loosen the wheel bolts r:=> page 315 .
4. Locate the proper mounting point for the
jack a nd align the jack below that point

6. Remove the whee l with the flat tire and then
insta ll

all whee l bolts

After changing a wheel
A wheel change is not complete without the do­
ing the following.
• Always store the veh icle tool kit, the jack* a nd
the replaced t ire in the luggage compartment
<=:> page 213.
• Che ck the tire pressure on the sp are whee l im­
med iate ly after mo unti ng it .
• As soon as possible, have the
tightening tor­
ques
on all whee l bo lts chec ked with a torque
wrench. The correct tightening torque is 90 ft
lb
(120 N m).
• Have the flat tire
replaced as soon as possible.
(D Tips
- If you notice t hat the whee l bolts are cor ­
r oded and diffic ult to t urn w hile cha nging a
tire, they should be rep laced before you
c heck the tighte ning torque .
- Drive at reduced speed until you have the
tighte ning torques c hecke d.
- After changing a wheel, the tire pressure in
all four tires must be c heck ed/co rrect ed a nd
the tire press ure mon itor ing indicato r must
be stor ed in the MM I

Loosening and tightening the wheel bolts
The wheel bolts must be loosened before raising
the vehicle.

.. Slide the wheel wrench onto the wheel bolt as
far as it will go .

-Do not use force or hurry when changing a
wheel -you can cause the vehicle to slip off
the jack and cause serious personal injuries.
-Do not loosen the wheel bolts more than
one turn
before you raise the vehicle with
the jack. - You risk an injury.

- Never use the hexagonal socket in the han­
dle of the screwdriver to loosen or tighten
the wheel bolts .
- If a whee l bolt is very tight, you may find it
easier to loosen by carefully push ing down

on the end of the whee l bolt wrench with
one foot only . As you do so, hold on to the
car to keep your balance and take care not
to slip.
AS: Raising the vehicle
The vehicle must be lifted with the jock first be­
fore the wheel can be removed.

Taking the wheel off/installing the spare
Follow these instructions step-by-step for chang­
ing the wheel .

After you have loosened all wheel bolts and
raised the vehicle off the ground, remove and re­
place the wheel as follows:
Removing the wheel
• Use the hexagonal socket in the screwdriver
handle
to completely remove the topmost
wheel bolt and set it aside on a
clean surface

• Screw the threaded end of the alignment pin
from the tool kit hand-tight into the empty bolt
hole

• Then remove the other wheel bolts as described
above.
•Ta keoff the wheel leaving the alignment pin in

ond alignment pin* (sto red in th e spa re wheel well mo ld­
ing) for the lower hole, follow ing the description for the
firs t alignment pin.

Putting on the spare wheel
• Lift the spare wheel and carefully slide it over
the alignment pin to guide it in place ¢0 .
• Use the hexagonal socket in the screwdriver
handle to screw in and tighten all wheel bolts
slightly.
• Remove the alignment pin and insert and tight­
en the remaining wheel bolt slightly like the
rest.
• Turn the jack handle counter-clockwise to lower
the vehicle until the jack is fully released.
• Use the wheel bolt wrench to tighten all wheel
bolts firmly¢
page 315. Tighten them cross­
wise,
from one bolt to the (approximately) op­
posite one, to keep the wheel centered.
(D Note
When removing or installing the wheel, the
rim could hit the brake rotor/ceramic brake
rotor* and damage the rotor. Work carefully
and have a second person help you.
(D Tips
Never use the hexagonal socket in the handle
of the screwdriver to loosen or tighten the
wheel bolts.
- Pull the reversible blade from the screwdriv­
er before you use the hexagonal socket in
the handle to turn the wheel bolts.
- When mounting tires with
unidirectional
tread design
make sure the tread pattern is
pointed the right way¢
page 319.
-The wheel bolts should be clean and easy to
turn. Check for dirt and corrosion on the
mating surfaces of both the wheel and the
hub. Remove all dirt from these surfaces be­
fore remounting the wheel.

Tires with unidirectional tread design must be
mounted with their tread pattern pointed in the
right dir ection .
Using a spare tire w ith a tread pattern
intended for use in a specific direction
When using a spare t ire with a tread patte rn in­
ten ded fo r use in a specific direction, please note
the following:
- The direct io n of rotat io n is ma rked by an a rrow
o n the side of the tire .
- If the spare tire has to be installed in the incor­
rect d irection, use the spare tire only tempora­
rily s ince the tire w ill not be ab le to achieve its
opt imum performanc e ch a rac teristics wi th re ­
g ard to a quaplaning, noi se and we ar.
- We recommend that you pay particular atten­
t io n t o thi s fa ct du ring we t wea ther and that
y ou adju st your s peed to m atch r oad co ndi­
ti ons .
- R eplace t he flat tir e wi th a new one and have i t
i n st alled on yo ur vehicle as soon as possible to
r es to re the handlin g advanta ges of a unidi rec­
tiona l tire .
Notes on wheel changing
P lease read the info rmation
<=> page 29 0 if you
are going to use a spare tire which is different
from t he tires on your vehicle.
Afte r you change a ti re:
- Check the tire pressure on the spare immedi ­
ately after installation.
- Have the wheel bolt tightening torque
checked with a torque wrench as soon as pos­
sible by your authorized Audi dealer or a
qualified service station.
- With steel and alloy wheel rims, the wheel
bolts are correctly tightened at a torque of 90
ft lb (120 Nm).
- If you notice that the wheel bolts are corroded
and diff icult to turn while changing a tire,
they should be replaced before you check the
tightening torque .
Emergency assistance
-Replace the flat tire with a new one and have
it installed on your vehicle as soon as possi­
ble. Remount the wheel cover .
Until then , drive with extra care and at reduced
speeds.

were factory installed, the n be sure to read
