Opening and closing the rear lid
To open the lid when the key slot is verti
cal, pull one of the two concealed handles
(see illustration, arrow) and raise the lid.
To close the lid, pull it down and shut it
firmly_
There is a recess in the interior trim of the

64 W
ARNING
• After closing the rear lid, always
pull up on it to make sure that it is
properly closed. Otherwise it
could open suddenly when the ve
hicle is moving.
This is especially important if you
are trav elling with a child sitting
on the additional rear child seat
bench*.
• To help prevent poisonous ex
haust gas from being drawn into
the vehicle, always keep the rear
lid closed while driving. Never
tra nsport objects larger than
those fitting completely into the
luggage area, because the rear lid
cannot be fully closed. ,
WARNING continued
• Never leave your vehicle unat
tended especially with the rear lid
left open. A child could crawl into
the car through the luggage
compartment and pull the lid shut
becoming trapped and unable to
get out. To reduce the risk of per
sonal injury, never let children play
in or around your vehicle. Always
keep the rear lid, as well as the ve
hicle doors, closed when not in
use.
Keep the rear lid locked at all times
to prevent unauthorized access to
the vehicle.
For further information see "Luggage

Remote rear lid release

You can open the rear lid from inside the ve
hicle. This feature is very useful when, for
example, the lock cylinder in the rear lid has
froze n.
• To unlock rear lid, open driver's door and
press switch in the door pillar (see illustra
tion).
• To open luggage compartment raise rear
lid. The
remote rear lid release is deactivated
automatically if you lock the rear lid. This en
ables the driver to lock the luggage
compartment permanently with the key, if
access by other persons is not wanted.
For example, if you should take your vehicle
to a workshop, lock the luggage compart
ment separately with the master key (lock
in the horizontal position). We recommend
you use the valet key if you have to leave
your vehicle at the workshop. I

66 General
notes
Power locking system
• In the event of an accident with airbag
deployment all locked doors will be auto

• If the power locking system should fail,
you can still open the fuel tank flap in an
emergency, see page 224. Remote
control function
• The remote control system can be af
fected by other systems operating in the
same frequency range close to the vehicle,
such as mobile telephones, television
broadcas ting stations, etc.
• Do no use the remote control if you are
inside the car, otherwise you may uninten
tionally lock the vehicle, and then you would
set off the anti-theft alarm when you try to
start the engine or open a door.
If the ignition is switched on, the remote
control system is deactiv ated.
• Reactiv ating remote control.
If you replace a lost key, or if any repair and
I or exchange work is performed on the re
ceiver, an authorized Audi Dealer must reac

in serious injury. m
WARNING continued
• Remember also that the power
windows will continue to operate
until the ignition key has been re
moved and one of the front doors
has been opened.
• Be careful when closing the win

VE
HICLE CARE
Adding coolant
 WARNING
The cooling system is under pres
sura and can get very hot. Reduce
the risk of scalding from hot cool
ant by following these steps.
• Turn off the engine and allow it
to cool down.
• Protect face, hands and arms es
caping fluid and steam by covering
the cap with a large, thick rag.
• Turn the cap slowly and very
care fully in a counter--clockwise di
rection while applying light, down
ward pressure on the top of the
cap.
• To help avoid being burned, do
not spill antifreeze or coolant on
the exhaust system or hot engine
parts. Under some conditions, the
ethylene glycol in engine coolant
can catch fire.
240 If,
in an emergency, only water can be add
ed, the correct ratio between water and an
tifreeze (see page 238) must be restored as
soon as possible.
If you have lost a considerable amount of
coolant. then you should add cold antifreeze
and cold water only when the engine is cold.
Do not fill coolant above the "MAX"
mark.
Note
Coolant pollutes the environment
and could cause an engine fire. Ex
cess coolant will be forced out
through the pressure relief valve in
the cap when the engine becomes
hot. Screw cap
on again tightly.
 WARNING
Antifreeze is poisonous. Always
store antifreeze in its original con
tainer and well out of the reach of
children. If you drain the coolant,
it must be caught and safely
stored in a proper container
clearly marked "poison ...
<£> Drained coolant should not be
reused. Always dispose of used
coolant observing all env ironmen
tal regulations.
Always heed all WARNINGS
on page 232.
