WARNING
You should switch on the off-road mode or
switch off the ESC/traction control system
(ASR) only if your driving ability and the trafÂ
fic conditions allow you to do so safely -
danÂ
ger of skidding!
- The stabilising function is restricted when
off-road mode is switched on. The driven
wheels may start to
spin,
causing the
vehiÂ
cle to lose grip, in particular on slippery or
wet roads.
- When the ESC/traction control system
(ASR) is switched off, the vehicle will not be
stabilised.
Brakes
New brake pads
New brake pads do not give full braking effect for
the first 400 km, they must first be "bedded in".
However, you can compensate for the slightly reÂ
duced braking effect by applying more pressure
on the brake pedal. Avoid placing a heavy load on
the brakes during the running-in period.
Wear
The rate of wear on the brake pads depends a
great deal on how you drive and the conditions in
which the vehicLe is operated. Negative factors
are,
for instance, city traffic, frequent short trips
or hard driving with abrupt starts and stops.
Noises
Brake noise may develop in certain situations, deÂ
pending on the speed, braking force and ambient
conditions (such as temperature and relative huÂ
midity).
Effect of moisture and salt
In certain conditions, such as in heavy
rain,
early
morning dew, or after washing the car or driving
through water, the full braking effect can be deÂ
layed by moisture (or in winter by ice) on the
discs and brake pads. The brakes should be
< "dried" by pressing the pedal to restore full brak-
R
ing effect.
When you are driving at higher speeds with the
windscreen wipers on, the brake pads are very
briefly brought into contact with the brake discs.
This automatic process which goes unnoticed by
the driver is carried out at regular intervals and is
intended to improve braking response in wet
conÂ
ditions.
The effectiveness of the brakes can also be
temÂ
porarily reduced if the car is driven for some disÂ
tance without using the brakes when there is a
lot of salt on the road in winter. The layer of salt
that accumulates on the discs and pads can be
removed with a few cautious brake applications.
Corrosion
There may be a tendency for dirt to build up on
the brake pads and corrosion to form on the discs
if the car is used infrequently, or if
you
only drive
low mileages without using the brakes very
much.
If the brakes are not used frequently, or if corroÂ
sion has formed on the discs, it is advisable to
clean off the pads and discs by braking firmly a
few times from a moderately high speed

Faults in the brake system
If the brake pedal travel should ever increase
suddenly, this may mean that one of the two
brake circuits has failed. Drive immediately to the
nearest qualified workshop and have the fault
rectified.
On the way to the dealer, be prepared
to use more pressure on the brake pedal and alÂ
low for longer stopping distances.
Low brake fluid level
Malfunctions can occur in the brake system if the
brake fluid level is too low. The brake fluid level
is monitored electronically.
Brake servo
The brake servo amplifies the pressure you apply
to the brake pedal. It only works when the engine
is running. •

Catalytic converter
Applies to: vehicles with petrol engine
The vehicle must only be used with unleaded petÂ
rol,
otherwise the catalytic converter will be irÂ
reparably damaged.
Never allow the fuel tank to run completely dry,
as the irregular supply of fuel can cause misfirÂ
ing.
This allows unburnt fuel to enter the exhaust
system,
which can cause overheating and damÂ
age to the catalytic converter.
Diesel particulate filter
Applies to: vehicles with diesel engine
The diesel particulate filter can filter out almost
all soot particles contained in the exhaust gas. In
normal driving conditions the filter is self-cleanÂ
ing.
Should the self-cleaning function of the filter
not be able to operate, e.g. when the vehicle is
continuously used only for short trips, the filter
becomes obstructed with soot and the indicator
lampnf°r

A WARNING
The exhaust system is very hot when the
vehiÂ
cle is being driven and after the engine has
been switched off.
- Never touch the tailpipes when they are hot
- risk of burns!
- Because of the high temperatures which can
occur in the emission controL system, do not
park the vehicle where the exhaust can
come into contact with flammable materials
under the car (e.g. on grass or at the forest
edge) - risk of fire!
- Do not apply any underseal agents in the
area around the exhaust system - risk of
fire!
Engine compartment
Working on components in the engine
compartment
Extra caution is necessary when working on comÂ
ponents in the engine compartment.
Always be aware of the danger of injury and
scalding as well as the risk of accident or fire
when working in the engine compartment (e.g.
when checking and refilling fluids). Always obÂ
serve the warnings listed below and follow all
normal safety precautions. The engine compartÂ
ment of any motor vehicle is a potentially hazÂ
ardous area

A WARNING
- Switch off the engine.
-Switch off the ignition.
-Applythe
parking brake.
- On vehicles with manual gearbox place the
gear lever in neutral, on vehicles with autoÂ
matic gearbox move the selector lever to
position P.
- To avoid the risk of being scalded, never
open the bonnet if
you
see steam or coolant
escaping from the engine compartment.
Wait until no steam or coolant can be seen
before opening the bonnet.
- Wait for the engine to cool down.
- Keep children away from engine compartÂ
ment.
- Never spill fluids on a hot engine. These
fluÂ
ids can cause a fire (e.g. radiator
antiÂ
freeze).
- Take care not to cause short circuits in the
electrical system.
- When working in the engine compartment
be aware that the radiator fan may start
running suddenly, even if the ignition is
switched off - risk of injury!
- Do not unscrew the cap on the expansion
tank when the engine is hot. The cooling
system is under pressure.
- Protect face, hands and arms by covering
the cap with a large, thick rag to protect
against escaping coolant and steam.

A WARNING
- To avoid the risk of being scalded, never
open the bonnet if
you
see steam or coolant
escaping from the engine compartment.
Wait until no steam or coolant can be seen
before opening the bonnet.
- For safety reasons the bonnet must always
be completely closed when the vehicle is
moving.
After closing it always check that it
is properly secured. It should not be possiÂ
ble to
lift
the front edges of the bonnet.
Should you notice that the bonnet is not
safely secured when the vehicle is moving,
stop the vehicle immediately and close the
bonnet properly, otherwise it could cause an
accident.

- The cooling system is under pressure. Do
not unscrew the cap on the expansion tank
when the engine is hot: you could be
scalÂ
ded by escaping steam.
- The coolant and coolant additive can be a
health hazard. Store the coolant additive in
the original container in a safe place out of
reach of children - risk of poisoning.
- When working in the engine compartment
be aware that the radiator fan may start
running suddenly, even if the ignition is
switched off- risk of injury!
Brake fluid
© CAUTION
Do not add coolant if the expansion tank is
empty. Air could have got into the cooling
system - risk of engine damage! In this case,
do NOT drive on. Obtain professional assisÂ
tance.
- Have your qualified workshop check the
cooling system before the winter season to
make sure that the anti-freeze concentraÂ
tion is adequate for the conditions to be exÂ
pected.
This applies particularly if
you
drive
into a colder climate zone.
-To prevent damage to the engine, do not
use a different type of anti-freeze additive if
the approved type of additive is not availaÂ
ble.
In this case use only water and bring
the coolant concentration back up to the
correct level as soon as possible by putting
in the specified additive.
- Always top up with fresh, unused coolant.
- Radiator sealants must not be added to the
coolant.

In right-hand drive vehicles the brake fluid reserÂ
voir is on the other side of the engine compartÂ
ment.
Changing brake fluid
Have the brake fluid changed regularly by a qualiÂ
fied workshop.
WARNING
-If the brake fluid Level is under the MIN
mark, the effectiveness of the brakes and
therefore the safety of the vehicle may be
impaired - risk of accident! Do not drive on.
Obtain professional assistance.
- Heavy use of the brakes may cause a vapour
lock if old brake fluid is left in the system.
This would seriously impair the effectiveÂ
ness of the brakes and the safety of the car
- risk of accident!

Battery acid is extremely corrosive. Wear
protective gloves and safety glasses.

Lights and lit cigarettes away from the
battery!
A highly explosive mixture of gases may

be given off when the battery is under
charge!
Keep children away from batteries and
battery
acid.

Any work on the batteries and electrical sysÂ

chemical burns in addition to danger of

Vehicle battery
The
term "vehicle battery" refers to the 12 Volt
battery in your vehicle.
If the vehicle is not used for long periods
If
you
do not drive your vehicle for a period of
several days or weeks, the power management
will gradually shut off the on-board systems one
by one, or reduce the amount of current they are
using.
This limits the amount of power consumed
and helps to ensure reliable starting even after a
long period

tures,
such as interior lighting or electric seat adÂ
justment, may not be available. These functions
will be restored when you switch on the ignition
and start the engine.
Even though some systems are deactivated autoÂ
matically, certain electrical equipment continues
to draw current even when the ignition is off. If
the vehicLe is left standing for long periods, this
can result in total battery discharge. If the
vehiÂ
cle battery is allowed to discharge completely, an
internal
chemicaL
reaction damages the battery
irreparably. To avoid this, the vehicle battery
should be recharged at Least once a month

Winter conditions
Cold weather is very hard on the vehicle battery.
The starting capacity may be reduced as a result.
