Some ind icator lights turn on briefly to check
the function of that system when you switch
the ign ition on. These systems are ma rked
with a ../ in the following tables. If one of
these indicator lights does not turn on, there
is a malfunction in that system.

16 Instruments and warning/indicator lights
~ Safety belts
This warning/indicator light reminds you to
put on your safety belt.
The. warning/indicator light illuminates
when the ignition is sw itched on to remind
the dr iver and any front passenger to put on
the safety belt. Additionally, an acoustic warn­
ing (gong) will also sound.

~- Steering column lock
• Steering fault! Do not drive vehicle!
If the indicator light turns on and the mes­
sage appears, there is an electronic steering
column lock malfunction. You cannot switch
the ign ition on.
Do
not tow your vehicle because it cannot be
steered . Seek professional assistance.
Ill Steering lock: System fault! Please con­
tact dealer.
If the indicator light turns on and the mes­
sage appears, there is an electronic steer ing
column lock malfunction.
Drive to your authorized Audi dea ler immedi­
ate ly to have the malfunction corrected .
A WARNING
-
Your vehicle must not be towed in the
event of a malfunct ion in the electron ic
steering column lock because it cannot be
steered due to the locked steering. If it is
towed with the steering locked, there is
the risk of an accident .
!;.IC; Electronic Stabilization Control
(ESC)
If the J;J indicator light blink s whi le driving,
the ESC or ASR (Anti-S lip Regulation) is active­
ly regulating .
If the: JjJ indicator light turns on, the system
has switched the ESC
off. In this case, you can
switch the ign ition
off and then on to switch
the ESC on aga in. The indicator light turns
off
when the system is functioning fully.
If the II indicator light turns on, ESC was re­
stricted or sw itched
off using the I~ OFFI but­

Stabilization control (ESC/ABS): Fault! See

If the indicator l ight GJ and the ABS indicator
light
t1l1 (USA mode ls) ;tiJ (Canada models)
tu rn on and the message appears, the ABS o r
electronic differentia l lock is malfunctioning.
This also causes the ESC to malfunction. The
brakes still function with their normal power,
but ABS is not active.
Drive to your authorized Audi dealer immedi­
ate ly to have the ma lfunction corrected.
A WARNING "--
If the . (USA mode ls)/ . (Canada mod-
e ls) brake system indicator light turns on
together with the ABS and ESC indicator
lights, the ABS/ESC regulating function
may have failed. Functions that stabilize
the vehicle are no longer ava ilable. This
could cause the vehicle to swerve and in­
crease the risk of slid ing. Drive carefully to
the nearest authorized A udi dealer and
have the ma lfunction corrected.

!t Safety systems
The fll indicator light monitors the safety
systems (e .g. airbags, pretensioners) and illu­
minates for a few seconds each time you
switch the ign ition on .
If the
fll indicator light does not go out, or if
it illuminates while you are driving, or if it
starts to b link, then there is a malfunct ion
somewhere in the system. If the light does

-Do not leave children inside the vehicle
unsupervised. In an emergency it would
be impossible to open the doors from
the outside without the key.
(D Tips
- In the event of a crash with airbag de­
ployment all locked doors will be auto­
matically unlocked to give access to the
vehicle occupants from the outside .
- If the power lock ing system should mal­
function, you can lock the driver's door
using the ign it ion key¢
page 33.
-If the power lock ing system should fail,
you can still open the fuel tank flap in an
emergency

- You are well advised not to keep valua­
bles inside an unattended vehicle, visible
or not . Even a properly locked vehicle
cannot provide the security of a safe.
- If the LED in the upper edge of the driv­
er's door panel comes on for about 30
seconds after the vehicle is locked, there
i s a ma lfunction in the power locking or
the anti-theft warning system. Have the
malfunction corrected by an authorized
Audi dealership or qualified repair facili­
ty.

dealer immediate ly to have the

bled. Be sure to bring all your keys with you.
Number of keys
You can check how many keys are initialised
for yo ur vehicle on the instrument cluster dis­
play. It is displayed wh ile you are setting the
time
c:> page 23. For example, 1/2 means that
one of two keys have been initialised for the.
This allows you to make sure you have re­
ce ived all of the keys when you purchase a
u sed vehicle.
A WARNING
--
-Do not leave your vehicle unattended
with the key in the ignition lock. Entry by
unauthorized persons could endanger
you o r result in theft or damage the vehi­
cle.
- Do not leave children unattended in the
veh icle, especially with access to vehicle
keys . Unguarded access to the keys pro­
vides children the opportunity to start
the engine and/or activate vehicle sys­
tems such as the power windows etc. Un­
supervised operation of any vehicle sys­
tem by children can result in serious in­
jury .
- Do not remove the key from the ign ition
lock until the vehicle has come to a com­
plete stop. Otherwise the steering col­
umn lock could suddenly engage -caus­
ing the risk of an accident.

If the engine fails to start immediately, switch
off the starter and try again after about

A WARNING
-Never allow the engine to run in confined

ignition look while the vehicle is moving.
Otherw ise, the stee ring lock could sud­
denly engage and you would not be able
to steer the vehicle.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle . Otherwise, the
engine could be started or e lectr ica l
equipment such as the power w indows
cou ld be operated . This can lead to seri­
o us injury .
- Never leave c hildren or persons requi ring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doo rs can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preventing peop le from es­
caping from the vehicle on their own in
the event of an emergency. Depend ing
on the time of year, people inside the ve­
hicle can be exposed to very h igh or ve ry
low temperatures .

Avoid high engine rpm, full throttle and
heavy eng ine loads until the eng ine has
reached operat ing temperature -other­
w ise you risk engine damage.

Do not let the engine run while parked to
warm up. Beg in driving immediately. This

-If it is difficult to turn the ignition key to
posit ion ©, move the steering wheel (to
take the load off the steer ing lock mech­
anism) until the key turns freely.

- Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a comp lete stop. The

Steering lock

Emergenc y Off functi on
If necessary in an emergency, the engine can
be sw itched off while the vehicle is st ill mov­
ing. Press the

tw ice in quick succession or ho ld it in for lon­
ger than two seconds .
_& WARNING
-Never t urn off the engine before the ve­
h icle has come to a complete stop . The
full function of the brake booster and the power steering is not guaranteed. You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary . Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually would, this could
lead to crashes and serious injur ies .
- For safety reasons, you should always
park your vehicle with the se lector lever
in P. Otherwise, the ve hicl e co uld inad­
vertent ly roll away.
- The rad iator fan can continue to run for
up to 10 min utes even after you have

turn on again if the engine coolant heats

Starting the engine after a malfunction

If the remote control key battery is exhausted
or if radio interference or a system malfunc­
tion o ccurs, extra steps may be necessary in
order to start the engine .

Electronic Stabilization
Control (ESC)
Description
ESC helps to improve road holding and vehicle
dynamics to help reduce the probability of
skidd ing and loss of veh icle control. It works
only when the eng ine is running. ESC detects
certain difficult driv ing s ituations, including
when the vehicle is beginning to spin (yaw) out of cont ro l and helps you to get the vehicle
back under control by select ively brak ing the
wheels, and/or red ucing engine powe r and
p roviding steering assistance to help hold the
ve hicle on the driver's intended course . The in­
dicator light
m in the instrument cluster
blinks when ESC is taking action to help you
control the vehicle.
ESC has limitations.
It is important to remem­
ber that ESC cannot overcome the laws of
phys ics. It will not a lways be able to help out
under all conditions you may come up against.
For example, ESC may not always be able to
h elp you master situat ions where there is a
sudden change in the coefficient of fr iction of
the road surface. When there is a sect io n of
d ry road that is s udden ly cove red with water,
slush o r snow, ESC canno t perform the same
way it would on the dry su rface.
If the vehicle
hydroplanes (rides on a c ush ion of wate r in­
stead of the road surface), ESC wi ll not be
ab le to he lp you steer the veh icle because con-

tact with the pavement has been interrupted
and the vehicle cannot be braked or steered .
D uring fast corner ing, particular ly on wind ing
roads, ESC cannot always deal as effectively
with difficult dr iv ing s ituations than at lower
speeds. When towing a trailer, ESC is not able
to help you regain control as it would if you
were not tow ing a trailer.
Always adjust your speed and driving style to road, traffic and weather conditions . ESC can­
not override the vehicle's physical lim its, in­
crease the availab le tract ion, or keep a veh icle
o n the road if road departu re is a result of
driver ina ttent io n. Instead , ESC imp roves the
poss ibility of keep ing the vehicle under con­
trol and on the road during extreme maneu­
vers by using the driver's steering i nputs to
help keep the vehicle go ing in the intended di­
rect ion. If you are traveling at a speed that
causes you to run off the road before ESC can
provide any assistance, you may not experi­
ence the benefits of ESC.
ESC includes and/or works together with the
anti-lock brake system (ABS), brake ass ist sys­
tem, ant i-slip regu lation (ASR), electron ic dif­
ferential lock (EDL), electron ic interaxle d iffe r­
ential lock*/se lective wheel torque co ntrol*
and hill descent assist. ESC is swit ched on a ll
the time. In ce rtain sit uat io ns when yo u need
less traction, you can sw itch off ASR by press­
ing the b utton

s u re to switch ASR on again when you no lon­
ger need less traction .
Anti-lock braking system (ABS )
ABS prevents the whee ls from locki ng up
when b raking. The vehicle can st ill be stee red
even during hard braking . App ly steady pres­
su re to the brake peda l. Do not pump the ped­
al. A pulsing in the brake pedal indicates that
the system is helping you to brake the vehicle.
Brake a ssis t sy ste m
The brake ass ist system can decrease braking
distance . It increases braking power when the
driver presses the brake peda l quickly in emer­
gency s ituations. You must press and hold the
brake pedal unti l the situation is over. .,,.

- If you damage the front s poiler, or if you
insta ll a different spoiler, be su re the air
flow to the front brakes is not obstruct­ ed. Otherwise the brake system could
ov erhe at r educi ng the eff ect iveness of
t h e enti re brak e system.
- Failure of one brake ci rcuit will impair
the braking capability resulting in an in­ creased stopp ing distance. Avoid driv ing
the vehicle and have it towed to the near­
est author ized Audi dealer or qualif ied
wor kshop.
- Never let the vehicle rol l to a stop w ith
the engine shu t off.
- If the brake booster is not working, the
brake pedal must be pressed conside ra­
bly harder to make up for the lac k of
booster assistance.
Electromechanical
steering
The electromechanical steering supports the
driver 's steering movements .
Power steering adapts electronically based on
the vehicle speed.
Ind icator light s and messages
• Steering fault! Do not drive vehicle !
If this indicator light tu rns on and stays on
and this message appears, t he power steering
may have fa iled.
Stop the vehicle in a safe locat ion as soon as
possib le . Do
not continue driving . See your
author ized Audi dealer or other qua lified re­
pa ir facility for assistance .
If the indicator light turns on, the steer ing
may be more d ifficu lt to move or more sensi­
tive than usual. The steer ing may also be at an
angle when dr iving st raight . Drive slowly to you
r authorized Audi dea ler or
qualified workshop to have the ma lf u nction
corrected.

Driving with your
quattro

With all-wheel drive, all four wheels are driv­
en.
General information
Wi th a ll-w heel d rive, power is dis trib ute d to
all four wheels . This happens automatically
depending on your driving style and the road
conditions at the time . See a lso

The all -whee l dr ive concept is des igned for
high eng ine power. Your veh icle is except ion ­
ally powerfu l and has excellent d riving charac­
terist ics both under normal driving conditions
and on snow and ice. Always read and follow
safety precaut ions¢ .&..
Winter tires
When driving in the winter, yo ur vehicle with
all-wheel drive has an advantage, eve n wit h
regular tires. In winter road conditions it may
be advisable to mount winter tires (or all-sea­
son tires) for improved driveability and brak­
ing: these tires must be mounted on
all four
wheel s.

Bulbs
Replacing bulbs
For your safety, we recommend that you have
your authorized Audi dealer replace any bulbs for you.
It is becoming increas ingly more and more
difficult to replace vehicle lig ht bulbs s ince in
many cases, other parts of the car must first
be removed before you are able to get to the bulb.
This applies especially to the light bulbs
in the front of your car which you can only
reach through the engine compartment.
Sheet meta l and bulb holders can have sharp
edges that can cause serious cuts, parts must
be correct ly taken apart and then properly put
back together to he lp prevent breakage of
parts and long term damage from water that
can enter housings that have not been proper­
ly resealed.
For your safety, we recommend that you have
your authori zed Audi dea ler replace any bulbs
for you, since your dealer has the proper tools,
the correct bulbs and the expertise.
Gas discharge lamps (Xenon lights ):
Due to the high e lectr ica l voltage, have the
bulbs replaced by a qualified technician.
Headlights with Xenon light are identified by
the high voltage st icker.
A WARNING "--
Changing Xenon lamps without the neces-
sary equipment can cause serious persona l
injury.
- Bulbs are pressurized and can explode
when being changed. Potential risk of in­
jury!
- On veh icles equipped with gas discharge
bulbs (Xenon light) life-threatening inju­
ries can result from improper handling of
the high-voltage portions of such lamps!
- Only your authorized Audi dealer or qualified workshop should change the
bu lbs in gas discharge lamps. There are
pa rts with sharp edges on the openings
and on the bulb holders that can cause
serious cuts. If you are uncertain about
what to do, have the work performed by
an authorized Audi dealer or qualified
workshop. Serious personal injury may
result from improperly performed work.
@ Tips
-If you still prefer to replace the light
