Usu ally, you can still drive to the nex t dea ler­
ship. Turn off all but the most necessary elec­
trica l consumers, since these drain the vehi­
cle's battery.

If the . warning symbo l (coolant system
malfunction) also lights up on the instru ­
ment panel during the trip¢

then you have to stop immediately and
turn off the eng ine. The coolant pump is

BRAKE/( (j)) Brake system malfunction
A malfunction in the brake system must be
repaired as soon as possible .
If the warn ing /indicator light ~ (USA
models)/ . (Canada mode ls) in the instru­
ment cluster flashes, there is a brake system
malfunct ion . A dr iver message appears as
well to explain the malfunction in mo re de­
tail. The d rive r warning goes out after about 5
seconds, b ut i t can be brought up at any time
by pressing the
I SE T! button aga in .
Stop vehicle and check brake fluid l evel
~ Stop the vehicle.
~ Check the brak e fluid leve l¢ page 242.
~ Seek professiona l assistance if necessa ry.

A WARNING
-A lways observe the warn ings in
¢ page 226, Engine compartment, be­
fore opening the hood and check ing the
bra ke fluid.
- Driving with low brake fluid is a safety
hazard . Stop the car a nd get professiona l
assistance .
-USA models: If th e ~ warning light
a nd the
B warning light come on to­
gethe r, the rear whee ls cou ld lock up
fi rst under hard bra king. Rear wheel lock­
up can ca use loss of vehicle co ntrol and
an ac cident. Have yo ur vehicle rep aire d
immediate ly by yo ur authorize d Au di
dea ler o r a qua lified wor kshop. Drive
slowly and avo id sudden, hard brake ap­
plications.
- Canada models: If the brake warning
light . and the ABS warning light

come on together, the rear wheels could
lock up first under hard braking. Rear
wheel lock-up can cause loss of vehicle
control and an acc ident. Have yo ur vehi­
cle repaired immed iately by your author­
i z ed A udi dealer o r a q ual ified wor kshop.

A malfunction in the engine cooling system
must be repaired as soon as possible .
If the . symbol flashes in the display, either

temperature is too h igh or
the eng ine coolant

function in more detail. The d rive r warning
goes out afte r about 5 seconds, but it ca n be

ed. Wait until you can no longe r see or

any wor k in the engine compartment,
t ur n of the engine and allow it to coo l.

"l:::r. Engine oil pressure malfunction
T he red engine oil pressure warning symbol
requires immediate service or repair. Driving with a low
oil pressure indication is likely to
cause severe engine damage .
If the . symbo l on the disp lay flashes, the
engine oil pressure is too low. A driver mes­
sage appears as we ll to exp la in the malfunc ­
t io n in more detail. The dr iver warning goes
o ut afte r abo ut 5 seconds , but it can be
brought up at any t ime by p ressing the

- The engine oil pressure symbol. is
not an indicator for a low eng ine oil lev­
e l. Do not rely on it. Instead, check the
oil level in your engine at regular inter­
vals, preferably each time you refuel, and always before going on a long trip .

You can centrally lock and unlock your vehicle
and start the engine with the master key with remote control. A mechanical key is integrat­
ed in the master key

@ Emergency key
The emergency key is not intended for con­
stant use.
It should only be used in an emer­
gency. Keep it in a safe place and do not carry
it on your key ring.
Key replacement
If you lose a key, contact your authorized Audi
dealer immediately to have the
lost key disa­
bled. Be sure to bring all your keys with you.
Number of keys
You can inquire about the number of assigned
keys to your vehicle
c::;, page 11. This allows
you to make sure you have received all of the
keys when you purchase a used vehicle. De­
pending on the vehicle equ ipment level, this
function may also be performed in the MM!* .
To do this, select:
ICARI funct ion button> Car
systems * control button > Servicing & checks
> Programmed keys .
Data in the master key
During driving, serv ice and maintenance-rele­
vant data is continuously stored on your mas ­
ter key. Your Audi serv ice adv iser can read out this data and
tell you about the work your ve­
hicle needs . This applies also to vehicles with
Convenience key *.
Personal comfort settings
If two people use one vehicle, it is recom­
mended that each person always uses "their
own" master key. When the ignition is turned
off or when the vehicle is locked, personal
convenience settings for the following sys­
tems are stored and assigned to the remote
master key.
- Climate control
- Central locking system
- Sea t memory*
- Parking system*
- Adaptive cruise control*
- Audi side assist*
-Audi drive select*
T he stored settings are automatically recalled
when you unlock the vehicle, when yo u open
the doors or when you turn on the ignit ion .
A WARNING ......... -
- Do not leave your vehicle unattended
wit h the key in the ignition lock. Entry by
unauthorized persons could endanger
you or result in theft or damage the vehi­
cle. A lways lock all doors and take the
key.
- Do not leave children unattended in the
veh icle, especially with access to vehicle
keys. Unguarded access to the keys pro­
vides children the opportunity to start
the engine and/or activate vehicle sys­
tems such as the power windows etc. Un­
supervised operation of any vehicle sys­
tem by children can result in serious in­
jury.
- Do not remove the key from the ignition
lock until the veh icle has come to a com­
plete stop. Otherwise the steering col­
umn lock could suddenly engage -caus­
ing the r isk of an accident.

Do not let the engine run while parked to
warm up . Begin driving immediately. This
reduces unnecessary emissions.
@ Tips
- After starting a cold engine, there may
be a brief period of increased noise be­
cause the oil pressure must first build up in the hydraulic valve adjusters . This is
normal and not a cause for concern .
- If you leave the vehicle with the ignition
switched on, the ignition will switch off
after a certain period of time . Please
note that electrical equipment such as
exterior lights will switch off as well
when that happens .

Steering lock
The steering locks when you turn the engine
off using the
I S TAR T ENGINE STOP I button
and open the d river 's doo r. T he locked steer­
ing helps prevent vehicle theft.
Emergency off
If necessary, the engine can be switched off
with the selector lever in the R or D/S posi­
tions. To do so , step on the brake pedal and
press and hold the
I START ENGINE STOP I but-

ton. The vehicle speed must be less than 6
mph/ 10 km/h.
A WARNING
- Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a complete stop . The
full function of the brake booster and the power steering is not guaranteed . You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary . Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually would, this could
lead to crashes and serious injuries.
- For safety reasons, you should always
park your vehicle with the selector lever
in P . Otherwise, the vehicle could inad­
vertently roll away.
- The radiator fan can continue to run for
up to 10 minutes even after you have
turned off the engine and removed the ignition key. The radiator fan can also
turn on again if the engine coolant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
build-up in the engine compartment.
- Always take the key with you whenever you leave your vehicle. Otherwise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equipment such as the power windows
could be operated. This can lead to seri­
ous inJury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preventing people from es­
caping from the vehicle on their own in
the event of an emergency. Depending
on the time of year, people inside the ve­ hicle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatures.
(D Note
If the engine has been under heavy load
for an extended period, heat builds up in
the engine compartment after the engine is switched off -there is a risk of damaging
the engine. Allow the engine to run at idle
for about two minutes before switching it
off .

Your vehicle is equipped with an electrome­
chanica l parking brake . The parking brake is
des igned to prevent the vehicle from ro lling
un intent ionally and replaces the hand brake.
I n addition to the norma l functions of a tradi­
tional hand brake, the electromechanica l
parking brake provides various convenience
and safety functions.
When start ing f rom re st
- T he integral starting assist helps you when
driving by automatically releasing the park­
ing brake ¢
page 90, Starting from rest.
-When starting on inclines, the starting as­
sist prevents the vehicle from unintentional­
l y rolling back. The braking force of the
parking brake is not released until sufficient
driv ing force has been built up at the
wheels .
Emergenc y bra ke function
An emergency brake ensures that the vehicle
can be slowed down even if the
normal brakes

Ind icator light s
-If the parking brake is closed w ith the igni­
tion

the instrument cluster and the switch for
about 20 seconds.
A WARNING
If a drive range is engaged with the veh icle
stat ionary and the engine runni ng, you
must in no instance accelerate care lessly.
Otherw ise the vehicle will start to move
immediate ly- risk of an accident.

- Occasional noises when the pa rking
brake is app lied and released are no rmal
and are no t a cause for conce rn.
- Whe n the vehicle is pa rked, the park ing
brake goes through a sel f-test cycle at
regu lar interva ls. Any associated noises
are normal.

A WARNING
--When you leave your vehicle -even if on-
ly briefly -always remove the ignition
key. Th is applies pa rticularly when chil­
dren remain in the vehicle. Otherwise the
children could sta rt the eng ine, release
the par king brake or operate electrical
equ ipment (e.g. power windows). There
is the risk of an acc ident.

-When the vehicle is locked, no one - par­
t icu larly not ch ildren should remain in
the vehicle. Locked doors make it more
difficult for emergency workers to get in­
to the vehicle - putt ing lives at risk .
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon
starting .
Stopp ing and ap plyin g park ing b rake
.. Pu ll the switch to apply the parking brake.
Starting and automatically relea sing the
par king brake
.. When you start to drive as usua l, the park­
ing brake is automatically re leased and your
vehicle begins to move.
When stopping at a traffic signa l or stopping
in city traffic on vehicles with an automatic
transmission, the park ing brake can be ap­
plied . The veh icle does not have to be held
with the footbrake. The park ing brake elimi­
nates the tendency to creep with a drive range
engaged. As soon as you dr ive off as usual,
the park ing brake is released automatically
and the veh icle sta rts to move.
Starting on slope s
When starting on inclines, the start ing ass ist
prevents the vehicle from unintentionally roll­
i ng back . The braking force of the pa rking
brake is not released until sufficient dr iv ing
fo rce has been bu ilt up at the whee ls.
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the park ing brake is re­
leased automatically only when the dr iv­
er 's safety belt is engaged in the bu ck le.
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an
incline, do the following:
• Keep the switch pulled and depress the ac­
celerator . The parking brake stays applied
and prevents the vehicle from roll ing back ­
ward .
• Yo u can re lease the switch once you a re su re
tha t you are deve lopi ng enough d riving
force a t th e wheels by depressing the acce l­
erator.
Depend ing on the we igh t of the rig (vehi cle
and t railer) and the severity of the incline, yo u
may ro ll backwa rds as yo u start . You can pre­
vent rolling backwa rds by holding the parking
brake switc h pulled out and accelerating - just
as you would when starting on a hill with a
convent ional hand brake.
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake sys­
tem fails or locks.
.. In an emergency, pull the switch and con ­
tinue to pull it to slow your vehicle down
w ith the park ing brake.
• As soon as you release the switch or acceler-
ate, the brak ing process stops.
If you p ull the switch and ho ld it above a
speed of abo ut 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergen­
cy brak ing funct ion is initiated . The ve hicle is
braked at all four whee ls by activating the hy­
draulic b rake system . The brake performa nce
i s sim ilar to making an emergency stop~& .
In order not to act ivate the emergency brak­
i ng by mistake, an audib le warning tone (buz­
zer) sounds when the switch is pu lled. As soon
as the switch is re leased, or the accele rato r
peda l is depressed, eme rgency b raking stops .
A WARNING
Emergency braking should only be used in
an emergency, when the norma l foot bra ke
has fai led or the brake pedal is obs tructed. .,..

8_ WARNING
-Unintended vehicle movement can cause
serious injury .
- Never leave your vehicle with the engine
running while in gear. If you must leave
your vehicle when the engine is running,
activate the parking brake and move the
selector lever to P.
- Power is still transmitted to the wheels
when the engine is running at idle. To
prevent the vehicle from "creeping", you
must keep your foot on the brake when
the engine is running and the selector lever is in D/S or R or "tiptronic" mode is
selected.
- Do not press the accelerator pedal when
changing the selector lever position
while the vehicle is stationary and the
engine is running.
- Never shift into
R or P while driving.
- Before driving down a steep slope, re-
duce your speed and shift into a lower
gear with "tiptronic".
- Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
pedal too often or too long when driving
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substantially re­
duces braking performance, increases
braking distance or causes complete fail­
ure of the brake system .
- To preven t the vehicle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, always hold it
in place with the brake pedal or parking
brake.
- Never hold the vehicle on an incline with
a slipping clutch . The clutch opens auto­
matically when it becomes too hot from

(D Note
- When stopping on an incline , do not try
to hold the vehicle in place by pressing
the accelerator pedal while a driving gear is selected. This can cause the transmis­
sion to overheat and can damage it. Acti­
vate the parking brake or press the brake
pedal to prevent the vehicle from rolling .
- Allowing the vehicle to roll when the en ­
gine is stopped and the selector lever is
in N will damage the transmission be­
cause it is not lubricated under those cir­
cumstances.
@ Tips
For safety reasons, the parking brake is re­
leased automatically only when the driv­
er's safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
Hill descent control
The hill descent control system assists the
driver when driving down declines.
Hill descent control is activated when these­
lector lever is in D /S and you press the brake
pedal. The transmission automatically selects
a gear that is suitable for the incline. Hill de­
scent control tries to maintain the speed ach­
ieved at the time of braking, within physical
and technical limitations. If may still be nec­
essary to adjust the speed with the brakes .
Hill descent control switches off once the de­
cline levels out or you press the accelerator
pedal.
When the speed is set in the cruise control
system
q page 95, hill descent control is also
activated.
