Electronic speed
limiter
Your vehicle may be factory equipped with
tires that are rated for a maximum speed of
130 mph (210 km/h) . This is less than the
maximum speed of your vehicle . To reduce the
risk of sudden tire failure and loss of control if
the vehicle is ope rated at excessive speeds,
your vehicle also has an elect ronic speed limit­
er. The electronic speed limiter prevents your
ve hicl e from going faster than the tire speed
rating. For more information

If the engine control unit receives faulty vehi­
cle road speed signals, the Malfunction Ind i­
cator Lamp (MIU¢• will illuminate .
If this
occurs, contact the nearest authorized Audi
dea ler for assistance.
SQS
Your vehicle's top speed is e lectronically limit­
ed to 155 mph (250 km/h).
If the engine control unit receives faulty vehi­
cle road speed signals, the Malfunction Indi­
cator Lamp
(MIL) ¢..fi will illuminate . If this
occurs, contact the nearest authorized Audi
dealer for assistance .

Always observe the posted speed limits
and adjust your speed to suit prevailing
road, traffic and weather conditions. Never
drive your vehicle faster than the maxi­
mum speed rating of the tires installed.
Auto Check Control
Introduction
The Auto-Check control monitors the function
of certain vehicle features and components. It
simply makes sure these features and compo ­
nents are working properly. The Auto-Check
control works as long as the ignition is on, as
well as whenever the vehicle is driven .
If a component is ma lfunctioning or if the
need for an urgent repair has been detected,

this will appear in the instrument cluster dis­
play. You will also hear an audible warning
tone . The displays are color coded in either
red or yellow depending on their level of prior­
ity.
A red symbol means Danger , a yellow symbo l
indicates
Warning. In certain situat ions, in­
formation message for the driver appear in
addition to the red and yellow symbols.
Note about automatic transmission
The Auto -Check Control wi ll automatically
perform a test each time you switch on the ig­
nition. With the selector lever in P or N, the
following message appears in the d isplay:
When stationary apply brake pedal while se­
lecting gear
When you select a diffe ren t gear (for exam ­
ple: R, D, etc.), the message w ill disappear
and the Auto-Check function is displayed.
If there is a malfunct ion, then the malfunc­
tion message will appear about 15 seconds af­
te r you start the vehicle . At the same time you
will hear a warning tone.
Driver information messages
Driver information messages are shown in the
instrument cluster display in addition to sym­
bols.

For example, if the transmiss ion selector lever
is not in the P position when the engine is
turned
off, the following message appears :
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock if lever is not in P.

Locking v ehicle
• Move the selector lever to the P position
(automatic transmission), otherwise the ve ­
hicle cannot be locked.
• Touch the sensor at the door handle

Do not reach inside
the door handle .
T he vehicle can be locked and unlocked at any
door. It depends on the settings in the radio
or in the
MM!* whether the entire vehicle is
unlocked or one of the doors
c:> page 39 . The
master key must be within a range of about
5 feet (1.5 meters) from the appropr iate door
or the rear lid .
It makes no difference whether
the master key is in your jacket pocket or in
your brief case.
If you grip the door handle while locking, this
can adversely affect the lock ing funct ion.
It is not possible to re -open the door for a
brief period directly after closing it . Th is al­
l ows you to ensure that the doors are properly
l ocked.

-
If your vehicle has been standing for an ex­
tended period, please note the follow ing:
- The proximity sensors are deactivated af-
ter a few days to save power. You then
have to pull on the door handle once to
u nlock the veh icle and a second time to
open the veh icle.
- To prevent the battery from being dis­
charged and to preserve your vehicle's
ability to start for as long as possible,
the energy management system gradu­
ally switches off unnecessary conven­
ience funct ions. It is possible t hat you
will not be able to unlock your vehicle us­ i ng these conven ience functions .

Operating locks with the mechanical key
In the event of o failure of the power locking
system, the driver's door can locked and un­
locked with the mechanical key at the lock
cylinder.

This message appea rs if you do not press the
brake pedal to start the engine.
Shift to N or P to start engine
This message appears when attempting to
start the engine if the selector lever for the
automatic transmission is not in the P or N
position . The engine can o nly be started w ith
the selector in these pos itions.
I!) Is the key in the vehicle?
This message appears in a veh icle with Con­
venience key* if the master key is removed
from the vehicle w ith the engine running . If
the master key is no longer in the vehicle, you
cannot switch on the ignition after stopping
the eng ine and you also cannot start the en­
g in e again. Moreover, you cannot lock the ve­
hicle from the o utside with the key .
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock if lever is not in P.
This message appears fo r safety reasons
a long w ith a warning signa l. It appears if the
selector lever for the automatic transm iss ion
is not in the P position when switch ing off the
ig nit ion. Move the selector lever to the P pos i­
tion, otherwise the veh icle is not sec ured
against rolling away. You also cannot lock the
vehi cle using the locking button* on the door
handle or using the remote key.
Turn off ignition before leaving car
This message appears if the driver's door is
opened while the ignition is switched on . Al­
ways sw itch off the ignition if you are leaving
the vehicl e. See also
~ page 92 .
Shift to P and turn off ignition, otherwise ve­
hicle can roll away
This message appears if the driver's door is
opened while the ignition is switched on and
the selector lever is not in the P position. Shift
the selector lever into the P position and switch off the
ignition when you exit the vehi­
cle. Otherwise the vehicle could roll . See also
~ page 92.
Convenience key defective! Use ignition lock
This message appears if the engine must be
sta rted o r stopped using the ign ition key and
not the
I START ENGINE STOP I* button .
Electromechanical
parking brake
' Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

.,. Step on the brake pedal or the accelerator
pedal and press the switch at the same time
to re lease the parking brake. The ind icator
light in the sw itch goes out.
Your vehicle is equipped with an electrome­
chanical parking brake. The parking brake is
designed to prevent the vehicle from rolling
unintentionally and replaces the hand brake.
In add ition to the normal functions of a tradi­
tiona l hand brake, the electromechanical
parking brake provides various convenience
and safety funct ions .
When starting from rest
-The integral starting assist helps yo u when
driving by automatica lly releasing the park-
ing brake

.. When you start to drive as usua l, the park ­
ing brake is automatically re leased and your
vehicle begins to move.
When stopping at a traffic signa l or stopping
in city traffic on vehicles with an automatic
transmission, the park ing brake can be ap­
plied. The vehicle does not have to be held
with the footbrake. The park ing brake elimi­
nates the tendency to creep with a drive range
engaged . As soon as you dr ive off as usual,
the park ing brake is released automatically
and the veh icle starts to move .
Starting on slopes
When starting on incline s, the start ing ass ist
prevents the vehicle from unintentionally roll­
ing back. The braking force of the parking
b rake is not released until sufficient dr iving
fo rce has been bu ilt up at the whee ls.
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the park ing brake is re­
leased automatically only when the dr iv­
er 's safety belt is engaged in the bu ck le.
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an
incline, do the following:
.. Keep the switch pulled and depress the ac­
celerator. The parking brake stays applied
and prevents the vehicle from ro lling back­
ward.
.. You can release the switch once you are sure
th at you are developing enough driving
force at the wheels by depressing the accel ­
erator.
Depending on the weight o f the rig (vehicle
and trai ler) and the severity of the incline , you
may roll backwards as you start . Yo u can pre­
vent roll ing backwards by holding the parking
brake switch pulled out and acce lerat ing -just
as you would when starting on a h ill with a
conventional hand brake .
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake sys­
tem fails or locks .
.. In an emergency, pull the switch and contin­
ue to pull it t o slow your vehicle down with
the parking brake .
.. As soon as you release the switch or acceler-
ate, the b rak ing process stops .
If you pull the switch and ho ld it above a
speed of about 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergen­
cy brak ing f unct ion is init iated . T he veh icle is
braked at all fou r whee ls by activating the hy­
draulic brake sys tem. The brake performance
is similar to making an emergency stop~&. .
In order not to act ivate the emergency brak­
ing by mis take, an audib le warning tone (buz­
zer) sounds whe n the switch is pulled. As soon
as the switch is re leased, or the accelerator
peda l is depressed, emergency braking stops.
A WARNING
Emergency braking should only be used in
an emergency, when the norma l foot brake
has fa iled or the brake pedal is obstructed.
Using the park ing brake to perform emer­
gency braking will s low your veh icle down
as if you had made a full brake application .
The laws of phys ics cannot be suspended
even with ESC and its asso ciated compo­
nents (ABS, ASR, EDS). In corners and
when road or weather cond itions are bad,
a full brake application can ca use the vehi­
cle to skid or the rear end to break away -
risking an accident .
Driver messages in the instrument
cluster
Caution: Vehicle parked too steep
This message appears when the parking brake
is app lied on a n incline that exceeds about
30% .
In this case the braking power of the park ing
brake may
not b e adequate to prevent the ve-
hicle from ro lling un intent io na lly. ...

marker lights will switch off after approxi­
mately 30 minutes or when you lock the vehi­
cle.
If the Start-Stop-System has not turned off
the engine or if you have switched the Start­
Stop-System off manually, the ignition will
not be automatically switched off and the en­
g ine will continue to run

A WARNING
Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation .
@ Tips
If you shift into the D/S or N positions af­
ter shift ing into reverse, the vehicle must
be driven faster than 6 mph (10 km/h) in
order for the engine to switch off again .
Switching the Start-Stop-System on/off
manually
Applies to vehicles: with Start-Stop-System
If you do not wish to use the system, you can
switch it off manually.

There is a malfunction in the Start -Stop -Sys­
tem . Drive the vehicle to an author ized repair
facility for servicing as soon as possible to cor­
rect the malfunction .
Transmission: Car may roll! Shift to park!
This message appears if the selector lever is
not in the P position when the driver 's door is
opened . You will also hear a warning tone.
Sh ift the selector lever to the P position. Oth­
erwise, the vehicle could roll.
Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep
your driving speed below a set speed limit.
T he speed warning system warns if the driver
exceeds a previous ly stored maximum speed.
A warning tone will sound as soon as the vehi­
cle speed exceeds the set speed by about
3 mph (3 km/h) . At the same time, a warning
symbol appears in the display . The symbol 's
appearance might be different in some mod ­
els .
The speed warning system has
two warning
thresholds
tha t function independen tly of
each other and that have somewhat different
purposes :
Speed warning 1
You can use speed warning 1 to set the m axi­
mum speed while you are driving . This setting ..,.

100 Hybrid
Hybrid battery: Low battery charge.
B attery will be charged while driving.
This message appears if the high voltage bat­
tery charge level has fa llen below a certain
range. If this message turns off after a little
while, the high voltage battery charged
enough while dr iv in g.
If the message does not turn off, have an au­
thorized repair fac ility correct the malfunction
as soon as possible.
EV mode is currently unavailable .
This message appears if the conditions

not met. Try again at a later time.
Hybrid functions and operating modes

The functions and operating modes described
be low are se lected automatica lly by the vehi­
cle control system, depending on the vehicle
operat ing status. This ensures that the vehicle
is always in the correct operating mode. One
exception is the enhanced electric driving
mode (EV mode), which is activated by the
driver
¢pag e 100.
Driving with the combustion engine
The vehicle is powered by the combustion en­
gine. The h igh voltage battery is charged si­
multaneously, if needed.
Full acceleration (boost)
In full acceleration, the vehicle is powered by
both the combustion engine and the electric
motor . This operating mode is called
Boost
and is on ly available for a short amount of
time because it uses so much energy. Availa ­
bility depends on the high voltage battery
charge level.
The boost operating mode is activated by
pressing the accelerator pedal all the way
down.
Electric driving
The vehicle can be driven completely electri­
ca lly depending on the high vo ltage battery
charge level and the driving resistance. The
combust ion eng ine turns off at that t ime.
The combustion engine starts when accelerat ­
ing or when the high voltage battery charge
level drops be low a certain threshold. The ve­
hicle resumes e lectric driving once the accel­
eration and the high voltage battery charge
level permit.
Enhanced electric driving mode (EV
mode)
Pressing the l~ I button ¢ fig. 108 can extend
the usual limits on electric driving so that you
can always drive in electric mode, if the condi­
t ion of the e lectr ica l system permits . The op­
erating mode is then set to maximum electric
drive @,@ ¢
page 98, fig. 107. It can be
driven complete ly elec trically for up to 1.8
miles (3 km) at a constant 37 mph (60 km/h) .
T he following conditions must be met to act i­
vate the enhanced e lectr ic drive:
- The high voltage battery must be suffic ient­
ly charged.
- The temperature of the 12 volt batter ies
and the hig h voltage battery must be suffi­
cient.
- The vehicle speed must not be higher than
62 mph (100 km/h).
- The transmission must not be in tiptronic
mode.

Introduction

Drive select provides the possib ility to exper i­
e nce diffe ren t types of vehi cle sett ings in o ne
ve hicl e. For ins tance, us ing t he three
Com­
fort , Auto and Dynamic modes, the driver can
switch from a sporty to a comfortab le drivi ng
mode with the press of a b utton.
A ddit ionally, in veh icles wi th MM I*, the vehi ­
cle setup for Individual* mode can be c us­
tom ized by you . This makes it possib le to
comb ine settings such as a sporty engine tun ­
ing with comfortable steering.
A WARNING
Improper use of the drive select can cause
co llisions, other accide nts and ser ious per­
sonal injury.
Description
App lies to vehicles: with Audi drive select
The vehicle setup in each mode depends on
the veh icle's features . However, the engin e,
automa tic t ransmissio n and steeri ng a re a l­
ways involved.
Engine and automatic transmission
Depending on the mode , the e ng ine and the
automatic t ransm ission respond quicke r or i n
a more ba la nced manne r to a cce le rator pedal
move ments. In t he sporty dynam ic mode, the
a ut om at ic t ra nsmissio n shifts at h igher R PMs.
Steering
The steering adapts in terms of stee ring effort
and steering ra tios . Ind irect steer ing that
moves easi ly, l ike the stee rin g in comfort
mode , is best su ite d t o long dr ive s on a high­
way. In co ntr ast, dynam ic mo de p rov ides
sporty, direct steering .
T he fo llow ing applies to vehicles with dynam ic
steer ing*: the stee ring ratio changes based on
ve hicl e spee d in order to maint ain op timum steering effort
for the drive r at all times . This
sets the stee ring to be less sens itive at higher
speeds in order to provide improved vehicle
control. At reduced speeds, however, steer ing
is more d irect in order to keep the steering ef­
fort as minima l as poss ible when the driver is
mane uveri ng the veh icle. At low and ave rage
speeds, dynamic steering addit iona lly pro­
vides more respon sive stee rin g pe rforma nce.
Adaptive dampers*
The adaptive dampers* use se nsors to record
informa tion regard ing steer ing movemen ts,
braking and acceleration o perations by the
drive r, road surfac e, d riv in g speed, and load.
T his makes it poss ible to adapt damp ing to
the driving si tua tion v irtu ally in real t ime.
Dr ive sele ct also makes i t possib le to sa tisfy
t h e desire fo r spo rty suspension ( Dynamic)
and comfortab le suspension (Comfort) with ­
o ut giving up ba lanced tuning (Auto) .
Engine sound*
The so und of the eng ine is ad apted to these­
l ected mo de and ranges from s ubtl e to spor ty .
Adaptive cruise control*
T he behav io r whe n accelerating can be adjust­
ed from comfortable to sporty, depending on
t h e d rive sele ct mode. Ad aptive cr uise con trol
also responds to the driv ing behavior o f th e
vehicle ahead in a mo re conse rvative or s porty
man ner.

- In some mo dels, t he m aximum vehicle
s pee d can only be reached in the Auto
and Dynamic modes .
- Selecting the Dynamic mode resu lts in
sporty shifting cha racte rist ics. T he S
gear position enga ges automatically.
- In vehi cles that have dynamic stee ring*,
o peratin g noise is heard when start ing or
stopping the engine . This does not indi­
cate a problem.

You can change the driving mode when the ve­
hicle is stationary or while driving. If traffic
permits, after changing modes, briefly take
you r foot off the acce le rator pedal so that the
recently selected mode is a lso activated for
the engine and transm ission.
Comfort -pro vid es a comfort-oriented vehicle
setup and is suited for long drives on high­
ways .
Auto -provides an overall comfortable ye t dy­
nam ic dr iving feel and is suited for every day
u se.
Dynamic -gives the driver a sporty driving
feel and is suited to a sporty driving style.

Pay attention to traffic when operating

accident.

Introduction
The automatic transmission is controlled elec­
tronically. The transmission upshifts or down­
shifts automatically depending on which drive
program is selected. The power is transferred
by a torque converter .
When a
mode rate d riv in g s ty le is used, the
transmission selects the most econom ica l
driving mode. It w ill then change up early and
delay the downshifts to g ive better fuel econ­
omy.
T he transmission switches to a sporty mode
after a k ick-down or when the driver uses a
spo rty driving sty le characterized by quick ac­
celerator pedal movements, heavy accelera­
tion, frequent changes in speed and traveling
at the maximum speed.
If desired, the driver can a lso select the gears
manually ( tiptronic mode ) c:> page 12 7.

In th is selector lever pos ition the transmis­
sion is mechan ically locked . Engage P only
when the vehicle is

T o shift in or out of posit io n P , yo u m ust first
press and ho ld the brake pedal and then press
the re lease button in the selector leve r handle
whi le moving the selector lever to or from P.
You can shift out of th is position only with the
ignition on.
R -Reverse
Se lect R on ly when the vehicle is at a full stop

Before you move the se lector lever to R, press
both the button in the hand le o f the selector
lever
and the brake pedal at the same t ime.
When the ignition is on, the backup lights illu­
minate when the selecto r lever is moved into
R .
N -Neutral

The vehicle can
also roll when the engine is stopped .
When the vehicle is stat iona ry or at speeds
below 1 mph (2 km/h), yo u m ust always apply
the footbrake before and whi le mov ing the

D/S -Normal position for driving forward
In the D/S pos ition, the transmission can be
operated either in the no rma l mode D or in
the sport mode S. To select the sport mode S,
pull the selector lever back briefly. Pulling the
lever back again will se lect the normal mode
D. The instrument cluster disp lay shows the
selected driving mode.
In the
normal mode D, the transmission auto­
matically selects the s uitable gear ratio. It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and driv ­
ing style.
