Introduction
App lies to vehicles: with Audi adaptive cruise co ntrol
The adaptive cruise control system assists the
driver by regu lating vehi cle speed and helping to
maintain a set distance to the vehicle ahead,
within the limits of the system.
If the system de­
tects a moving vehicle up ahead, adaptive cruise
control can brake and then accelerate your vehi­
cle. This helps to make driving more comfortable
on long highway stretches.
The braking guard system can warn you about an impend ing collision and initiate braking maneu ­
vers
¢ page 113.
Adaptive cruise control and braking guard have
technical limitations that you must know, so
p lease read this section carefu lly, understand
how the system works and use them properly at
all times.
General information
General information

The area that contains the radar sensor
¢ fig. 116 must never be covered by stickers or
other objects or obs tructed with dirt, insects,
snow or ice that w ill interfere with the adaptive
cru ise control system and braking guard. For in­
formation on cleaning, refer to ¢
page 208. The
same applies for any modifications made in the
front area. T
he function of the adaptive cruise contro l sys­
tem and braking guard is limited under some
condit ions:
- Ob jects can on ly be de tected when they are
within sensor range
¢ page 109, fig. 119.
-The system has a limi ted ability to de tect ob­
jects that are a short d istance ahead, off to the
side of your vehicle or moving into your lane .
- Some kinds of veh icles are hard to detect; for
examp le motorcycles, vehicles with high
ground clearance or overhanging loads may be
detected when it is too late or they may not be
detected at all.

-= -Always pay attention to traffic when adaptive
cruise control is switched on and braking
g uard is active. As the driver, you are sti ll re ­
sponsible for start ing and for maintaining
speed and distance to other objects. Braking
g uard is used to assist you . The drive r must
a lways take action to avo id a collision . Th e
d river is always responsible for bra kin g at the
correct t ime.
- I mproper use of adaptive cru ise control can
cau se collisions, o ther accidents and serious
pe rsonal injury.
- Neve r let the comfort and conve nience that
adap tive cr uise control and braking guard
o ff er distrac t you from the need to be alert
t o traffic con ditions and the need to remain
i n full control of your vehicle at all times,
- Always remember that the adaptive cruise
control and braking guard have limits -they
will not slow the vehicle down or maintain
the set distance when you dr ive towards an
obstacle or something on or near the road
that is not moving, such as vehicles stopped
in a traff ic jam , a sta lled or d isabled vehicle.
If registered by the radar sensor, vehicles or
obstacles that a re not moving can t rigger a
coll is io n warning and if confi rmed by the
video came ra, a n acute collision warning.

- For safety reasons, do not use adaptive
cruise control when driving on roads with
many curves, when the road surface is in
poor condition and/or in bad weather (such
as ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and hydrop lan­
ing). Using the system under these condi­
t ions could resu lt in a col lision.
- Switch adaptive cruise control off tempora­
rily when driving in turn ing lanes, on ex­
pressway exits or in construction zones. This
prevents the vehicle from accelerating to
the set speed when in these situat ions.
- The adapt ive cr uise control sys tem wi ll not
brake by itself if yo u put you r foot on the ac­
celerator pedal. Doing so can ove rride the
speed and distance regulation.
- When approach ing stationary objects such
as stopped traffic, adaptive cruise control
will not respond and braking g uard will have
limited function.
- The adapt ive cr uise control system and brak­
ing guard do not react to people, animals,
objects cross ing the road or oncoming ob­
jects .
- The function of the radar sensor can be af ­
fected by reflective objects such as guard rails, the entrance to a tunnel , heavy rain or
ice.
- Never follow a veh icle so closely that you
cannot stop your vehicle safe ly . The adap­
t ive cru ise control cannot s low or brake the
vehicle safely when you fo llow another veh i­
cl e too close ly. Always remembe r that the
automa tic brak ing funct ion c annot bring the
vehicle to a sud den or emergency stop un­
der these conditions.
- To prevent unin tended operation, always
switch adaptive c ruise control off when it is
not be ing used .

The sensor can be displaced by impa cts or
damage to the bumper, wheel housing and
underbody . That could affect the adaptive
cruise contro l system and braking gua rd . Have
your authorized A udi dealer or authorized
Audi Service Facility check their function .

curve, the adaptive cruise control may react to a
vehicle in the next lane and apply the brakes . You
can override or prevent the braking by pressing
the accelerator peda l briefly .

The adaptive cruise contro l system only reacts to
ob jects that are moving or that the system has
already detected as moving. For example, if ave­
hicle @, which has already been de tec ted by the
adap tive cruise con trol, turns or changes lanes
and another stationary veh icle @ is located in
front of that ve hicle, the system will not react to
the stat ionary vehicle.

pedal. The message

• To resume adaptive cruise control, remove your
foot from the gas pedal. The system returns
again to the speed that was saved before .
• You can save a new speed at any time by press­

• press the brake pedal.
• To resume the stored speed, move the lever in­

Never resume the s tored speed if the speed is
too high for prevailing road, traffic or weather
conditions .

Following other vehicles too closely increases
the risk of collisions and ser ious personal in­

- Setting short distances to the traffic ahead
reduces the time and d istance available to
br ing your vehicle to a safe stop and makes

- Always obey applicable traffic laws, use
good judgment, and select a safe followi ng

to take act ion . This could happen, for example , if
braking by the adaptive c ruise control system is
not enough to maintain enough distance to the
vehicle ahead .

Braking guard uses a radar sensor. It also func­
tions within the limits of the system when adap­ tive cruise control is switched off .
What can bra king gu ard do ?
When detected in time, the system can assess
situations when a vehicle ahead brakes suddenly
or if your own veh icle is traveling at a high speed
and approaching a vehicle up ahead that is mov ­
ing more slowly . Braking guard does not react if it
cannot detect the s ituation.
The system advises you of various situations:
- The
di sta nce wa rning is given if you are too
close to the vehicle ahead for a long time.
If the
vehicle ahead brakes sharply, you will not be
able to avoid a collision. The indicator light .
in the d isplay comes o n.
- The
app roach warning is g iven when a detected
vehicle up ahead in your lane is moving much
more slowly than you are or if it brakes sharply .
When this warning is g iven, it may only be pos­
s ible to avoid a co llision by swerving or braki ng
sharp ly. The indicator light . and indicator in
t h e d isplay w ill warn yo u about the danger

If you do not react fast enough or do not react at
all to the situation, braking guard will intervene by bra king and the message

- If a collision is imminent, the system wi ll first
provide an
a cute war ning by brief ly and sharply
app ly ing the brakes.
- If you do not react to the acute warning, brak­
ing guard can brake within the limits of the sys­
tem. This reduces the veh icle speed in the event
of a collision.
- At speeds under 20 mph (30 km/h), the system
can initiate a comp lete deceleration shortly be­
fore a collisionl).
- If the braking guard senses that you are not
braking hard enough when a collision is immi­
nent, it can increase the braking force.
Which function s can b e cont roll ed ?
You can switch braking guard and the distance/
approach warning on or off in the radio/MMI*
¢ page 114, Settings in the radio/MM!*.
A WARNING
-
Lack of attention can cause collisions, other
accidents and serious personal injuries. The b raking guard is an ass ist system and cannot
p revent a coll is ion by itself. The dr iver must
a lways intervene. The driver is always respon­
s ib le for b ra ki ng at the corre ct time.
- Always pay close attent ion to traffic, even
when the b rak ing guard is switched on. Be
ready to intervene and be ready to take com ­
p lete control whenever necessary . Always
keep the safe a nd legal distance between
your vehicle and vehicles up ahead.
- Braking guard works within limits and will not respond outside the system limits, for
examp le when approaching a stopped vehi­
cle or stationary obstacle (end of a traffic
jam or vehicle that has broken down in traf­ f ic).
- Always remember that the radar sensor for
the braking guard works on ly w ithin defined
detection and range limits that may prevent
the prope r detection of other vehicles.
- The radar sensor's funct ion and range can
be reduced by ra in, snow and heavy spray.

Side assis t helps you monitor your blind spot and
traffic behind your vehicle . Within the limits of
the system , it warns you about vehicles that are
coming closer or that are traveling with you with­
in sensor range(!)

informs you about veh icles that are
detected and classified as critica l. The display in
the respective mirror turns on, but is dim.

@ Vehicles that ar e approaching
In certain cases, a vehicle will be classified as
cr itical for a lane chang e even if it is still some­
what far away . The faster a vehicle approa ches,
the sooner the d isplay i n the exter io r mir ro r will
turn on.
@ Vehicles traveling with you
Vehicles traveling w ith you a re indicated in the
exte rior m irror if they ar e classified as cr itical fo r
a lane change. All vehi cles detected by side assist
Aud i side assist
are indica ted by the time they en ter your "blind
spot ", at the latest.
@ Vehicles left behind
If you s low ly pas s a vehi cle that s ide ass ist has
de tec ted ( the di fference in speed between the ve ­
hicle an d you r vehi cle is less than 9 m ph o r
15 km/ h), the display in the exterio r mirror tu rns
o n as soo n as the vehicle enters your blind spot.
T he disp lay will not t urn on if you quickly pass a
vehicle th at side ass ist has de te cte d (t he differ­
ence in speed between the vehicle and you r vehi ­
cle is greater than 9 mph or 15 km/h).
Functional limitations
The radar senso rs are designed to detec t the left
and right adj ac ent lanes whe n the road lanes are
the norma l width . In cer tain s ituations, the dis­
play in the exterior mirror may turn on even
though there is no vehicle located in the area that
is cr itica l for a lane change . For example:
- if the lanes are narrow or if your are dr iving on
the edge of yo ur lane. If t his is the case, the
system may have detected the vehicle in anoth­
er lane that is
not adjacent to your current lane .
- if you a re dr ivi ng throug h a c urve . Side assist
may react to a vehicle that is one lane over from
the adjacent lane.
- if side assist reacts to othe r objects (such as
high or disp laced guard rails).
- In poor weather conditions . The side assist
fu nctions are limited.

Driving settings
Introduction
Applies to veh icles: w ith Audi drive select
Drive select provides the possibility to experience
d ifferent types of vehicle settings in one vehicle.
F or instance, using the three
Comfort, Auto and
Dynamic modes, the driver can switch from a
sporty to a comfortable driving mode with the press of a button.
Addit ionally, in vehicles with MM I*, the vehicle
setup for
Individual* mode can be customized by
you. This makes it possible to combine settings
such as a sporty engine tuning with comfortable
steering .
A WARNING
-
Improper use of the drive select can cause
collisions, other accidents and serious person­
al injury.
Description
Applies to veh icles: w ith Audi dr ive select
The vehicle setup in each mode depends on the
veh icle's features . However, the engine, automat­
ic transmission and steering are always involved.
Engine and automatic transmission
Depending on the mode, the engine and the au­
tomatic transmission respond quicker or in a
more balanced manner to accelerator pedal
movements. In the sporty dynamic mode, the au­
tomatic transmission shifts at higher RPMs.
Steering
The steering adapts in terms of steering effort and steering ratios. Indirect steer ing that moves
easily, like the steering in comfort mode, is best
suited to long drives on a highway. In contrast,
dynamic mode provides sporty, direct stee ring.
The follow ing applies to vehicles with dynam ic
steer ing*: the steering ratio changes based on ve­
h icle speed in order to maintain optimum steer­
ing effort for the dr iver at all times. This sets the
s teer ing to be less sensitive at higher speeds in

order to provide improved vehicle control. At re ­
duced speeds, however, steering is more direct in
order to keep the steer ing effort as m inima l as
possib le when the driver is maneuvering the vehi­
cle. At low and average speeds, dynamic steering
additionally provides more responsive steering
performance.
Adaptive dampers*
The adaptive dampers* use sensors to record in­
formation regarding steering movements, brak­ ing and acceleration operations by the driver,
road surface, driving speed, and load. This makes
i t possible to adapt damp ing to the driving situa­
tion virtually in real t ime . Drive select also makes
i t possible to sat isfy the desire fo r sporty suspen­
s ion (Dynamic) and comfortable suspension
(Comfo rt) without giving up ba lanced tuning (Au­
to).
Engine sound*
T he sound of the engine is adapted to the select­
ed mode and ranges from subtle to sporty.
Adaptive cruise control*
The behavior when accelerating can be adjusted
from comfortable to sporty, depending on the
drive select mode . Adaptive cruise control a lso
r esponds to the driving behavior of the vehicle
ahead in a more conse rvative or sporty manner.
@ Tips
- In some models, the maximum vehicle
speed can only be reached in the
Auto and
Dynamic modes.
- Selecting the
Dynamic mode resu lts in spor­
ty shifting characteristics. The 5 gear pos i­
tion engages automatical ly.
- In vehicl es that have dynamic stee ring*, op­
erating noise is heard when starting or stop­
ping the engine. This does not indicate a
problem .

Parkin g sys tem
Rearview camera cover age area
The MM I disp lay shows the area cove red by the
rearview camera

We recommend that yo u practice par king with
the rearview camera in a traffic-free location o r
parking lot to become familiar with the system,
the orientation lines, and their f unction . When
doing this, there should be good light and weath­
er cond itions.
I n the MMI disp lay, objects or vehicles appear
closer o r further away if:
- yo u are driving in reverse gear from a level su r­
face onto an incl ine, or a downward slope,
- you are driving in reverse gear toward protrud­
ing obje cts,
- the ve hicl e i s ca rrying too much load in the
rear.
The accuracy of the or ientat ion lines and blue
surfac es dimin ishes if:
- the rearv iew camera does not provide a reliab le
image, for examp le, in poor visibility cond itions
or if the lens is d irty,
- the image on the screen is not visible due to
su n g la re and reflect ion .
Caring for the rearview camera lens
The rearview camera is located above the rear li ­
cense plate bracket. For the parking system to
operate, the lens
c::> fig. 144 must be kept clean:
- Dampen the lens with a house ho ld alcoho l-
based glass cleaner, and then wipe the lens
clean with a dry cloth
c::> Q) .
-Remove snow with a hand brush and ice pref­
erably with a de- ic ing spray
c::> Q).
A WARNING
-The parking system ca nnot rep lace the driv­
er's attenti on . T he d rive r alone is responsi­
ble fo r parki ng a nd s imilar dr iv ing ma neu ­
vers.
- Senso rs have b lind spots in which objects
cannot be detected . Pay special atte ntion to

sma ll children and an imals beca use the sen­
sors cannot always detect them.
- Always keep your eyes on the vehicle 's s ur­
round ings, using the rearview mirror as
wel l.
- Do not allow yourself to be distracted from
traffic by the rearview camera pict ures.
- If the position and t he installation angle of
the camera has changed, for e xamp le, after
a rear end collision, do not continue to use
the system for safety reaso ns. Have it
checked by a qualified dealersh ip.

- Low obstacles a lready s ignaled by a warn ing
can disappear from the system's detection
range as they are approached and w ill n ot
cont in ue to be signaled. Objects such as
bar rier cha ins, trailer draw ba rs, thi n pa int­
ed vert ica l poles or fences may not be de­

- Please note that objects not touching the
ground can appear to be further away than
they really are (for example, the bumper of
a parked veh icle, a trai ler hitch, or the rear
of a truck). In this case, you should not use
the help lines to help with parking, which
poses dange r of an accident!

In the MMI display, the direction of travel of
the veh icle rear is represented depend ing on
the steer ing whee l ang le. The vehicle front
swings o ut more than the vehicle rear. Main­
tain plenty o f distance so that yo ur outside
mirror or a corner of your vehicle does not co l­
li de with any obstacles. This can damage to
your vehicle.
