Warning light in the instrument cluster
display
If the . warning light in the instrument cluster
display flashes, this can mean one of two things:
either the coolant
temperature is too high, or the
coolant
level is too low~ page 29.
If the needle is well in the upper area of the
gauge, the coolant temperature is too high.
Stop
the vehicle, switch the engine off, and allow it
to cool. If the warning light comes on again after
driving a short distance, contact an authorized
Audi dealer or other qualified workshop .
..&, WARNING
- Always observe the warning in ~ page 220,
before opening the hood and checking the
engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dr ipping from the engine compartment. You
cou ld burn yourself. Let the engine cool off
first so that you cannot hear or see any
steam or engine coo lant.
CD Note
- Mounting additional lights or accessories in
front of the air inlets reduces the cooling ef­
fect of the radiator. At high outside temper­
atures or high engine load, the engine could
overheat.
- The front spoiler has been designed to prop­
erly distribute the cooling air when the vehi­
cle is moving. If the spoiler is damaged, this
could reduce the cooling effect and the en­
gine could then overheat. Ask your author­
iz ed Audi dealer for assistance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM (revo­
lutions per minutes) .
If engine RPM drops below 1,500, you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red area at
the end of the scale indicates max imum permis­
sible engine RPM after the break-in period . Be-
~ fore reaching this area, move the selector lever U"I

could damage your engine! The beginning of
the red zone varies depending on the engine.

The !SET ! button performs the following func­
tions:
Switching on time, date, temperature
display and odometer
The display appears for approximately 30 sec­
onds when you press the

with the ignition off .
Starting the Auto-Check sequence
The Auto-Check system ~ page 2 7 constantly
monitors certain individual functions and compo­
nents of the vehicle when the ignition is turned
on and when the vehicle is moving.
With the ignit ion turned on, you can start the
"Auto-Check sequence" by press ing the
!SE TI but­
ton. You can pe rform an Auto-Check seq uence
when the vehicle is stationary and the ignition is
turned on or when the vehicle is moving slower
than 3 mph (5 km/h).

App lies to vehicles: with gaso line engine
This warning/indicator light monitors the elec­
tronic power control .
The Ga warning/indicator light (Electronic Power
Control) illuminates when you turn on the ign i­
tion as a function check.

If this warning/indicator light illuminates
while you are driving, then there is a malfunc-

W Glow plug system
Applies to vehicles: with diesel eng ine
The control light illuminates when the glow plug
system is active.
If t he II ind icator light illuminates, the g low
plug system is active . You shou ld start the engine
immediately after the indicator light switches
off. The indicator light on ly illuminates for ap­
prox imately 1 second if the eng ine is warm or if
the outside temperature is above 46

- If the glow plug indicator light illuminates
wh ile driving, there is an engine control
ma lfunction. The engine should be checked
immediately .
-If the ind icator light does not illuminate at
all when switching the ignition on, there
may be a malfunction in the glow plug sys­
tem. The engine shou ld be checked.
;;./G, Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC)
If the Bl indicator light bl inks while driv ing, the
E SC or ASR (Ant i-Slip Regulat ion) is act ively regu­
lating .
If the
Bl ind icator light turns on, the system has
switched the ESC off. In t his case, you can swit ch
the ignit io n off and then on to switch the ESC on
again. The indicator light t urns off when the sys­
tem is functioning fu lly.

The Malfunction Ind icator Lamp (MIL) is part o f
the On -Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system . The
symbo l ¢4 lights up when the ign ition is turned

a nd has set tled at a cons tan t idle speed. This in­
d icat es that t he MIL is workin g pro p erl y.
The warning light illuminates when there is a
malfunct io n in the eng ine e lec tron ic system .

This warning/indicator light monitors the AB S
and the elec troni c differen tial lock ( EDL).

There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The warning/ indica to r li ght does no t illum inate
when y ou switch on the ig nitio n.
- The warn ing/ indica to r li gh t does no t go out af­
t er a few seconds .
- The warning/ indica to r li ght illum ina tes while
driv ing .
The brake system will still respond even w ith ·
out the assistan ce of the ABS system. See your
authorized Audi dealer as soon as possible to re­
store full braking performance .

The ABS warning light and the brake warning
light come on together. The ABS will not work
and you will notice a change in braking re­
sponse and performance.

lights, the ABS/ESC regulating function may
have failed . Functions that stabilize the ve ­
hicle are no longer available. This could

risk of s liding. Drive carefully to the nearest
authorized Audi dealer or other qualified
workshop and have the malfunction correct­
ed.
- L Engine cooling system malfunction
A malfunction in the engine cooling system must
be repaired as soon as possible.

g ine and turn on the hazard warning lights

- Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coo lant escaping from the engine
compartment -you risk being scalded. Wait
until you can no longer see or hea r steam or
coo lant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any vehicle is a
dangerous area. Before you perfo rm any
work in the eng ine compartment, turn of
the engine and a llow it to cool. Follow the

The red engine oil pressure warning symbol re­
quires immedia te service or repair. Driving wi th a
low oil pressure indi cation is likely to cause se­
vere engine damage .

pears as well to explain the malfunction in more

idle, either .
(D Tips
- The engine oil pressure symbol. is not
an indicato r for a low engine oil level. Do
not rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, preferably each time you refuel, and always before
going on a long trip .
- The yellow oil level warning indication

locked.

lock, the ignition cannot be turned off . Drive im­

should not be switched off using the Start/Stop button because the engine cannot be started
again after the ignition has been switched off.

This reminder appears along with the
II symbol
if the master key is removed from the vehicle
with the engine running. It is intended to remind
you (e.g. when changing drivers) not to continue the journey without the master key .
If the master key is no longer in the vehicle, you
cannot switch off the ignition after stopping the
engine and you also cannot start the engine
again . You also cannot lock the vehicle from the
outside .

If the symbol illum inates, the light sensor has
failed. For safety reasons the low beams are
turned on permanently with the switch in
AUTO.
However, you can continue to turn the lights on
and off using the light switch. In the case of a de­
fect in the rain sensor, the windshield wiper lever
functions are still available. Have the light/rain
sensor checked as soon as possible by an author­ ized Audi dealer.
(0) Worn brake pads

If the warning light illuminates, immediately
contact your authorized Audi dealer or qualified
workshop to have all brake pads inspected. On USA models the warning light

after a whi le, the battery has been adequately re ­
charged .
Driver message appears and does not go out
again
If this drive r notificat ion appea rs after the igni­
tion is tu rned on or while driv ing and does not go
out again, the battery's state of charge is not in
the optimal range. Start ing capability is restrict­
ed . Have the battery checked at an authorized
Audi dealer or other qualified workshop as soon as possible.

When the II symbol illum inates, you can a lter
your driving sty le to assis t the fi lter self-cleaning
p rocess . Drive for approx ima tely 15 minutes with
the selector lever in the S position a t a min imum
speed of 37 mph (60 km/ h) a nd an engine speed
of approximate ly 2,000 RPM . The tempe rature
increase that w ill result from this can burn off
the soot in the fi lter. The symbol will sw itch off
when the clean ing is successful. After a success ­
fu l cleaning, there is no need to br ing the car to
an author ized deal er or qualified workshop b e­
cause this is part of no rm al veh icle oper ation.

-Ne ver turn off the engine before the veh icle
has come to a comp lete stop . The f ull func­
t ion of the brake booster and the power
steering is not guaranteed. Yo u must use
more force to turn or brake if necessary . Be­
ca use you cannot steer and b rake as you
us ually wou ld, this could lead to crashes
and serious injur ies.

• Slow the vehicle to a s top using the brake and
k eep pressing the bra ke pe dal. The engine w ill
switc h off . The
[I] ind icator light appears in the
i nst rument cluste r display and -also
appears in the t rip computer.
• When you take yo ur foot off the b rake peda l,
the engine restarts . The ind icator light tu rns
off .
Add itional informat ion
The eng ine wi ll switch off in the P, D/S and N po­
sitions as we ll as in manua l mode. In the P pos i­
tion, the eng ine will a lso remain off if you take
your foot off the brake pedal. The engine starts

again w hen you select another se lecto r lever po ­
sition and take your foot off the brake pedal.
If you se lect t he R posit io n dur ing a Stop phase,
the e ngine will sta rt ag ain.

You can determine for yourself if t he engine w ill
stop o r not by re duc ing or inc reasing the amount
of force you use to p ress the b rake pedal. Fo r ex­
amp le, if yo u only ligh tly press o n the brake ped­
a l in s top- and and-go traffic or when turning, the
engine will not switch off when the veh icle is sta ­
tiona ry. As soon as you press the brake down
h arder, the engine will switch off .

-Press the brake peda l during a stop phase to
keep the vehicle from rolling.
- The igni tio n wi ll turn off if y ou press the
