Introduction
Applies to vehicles: with hybrid drive
General informatio n
The hybrid drive is a combined drive concept that
automatically switches between combustion en­
gine and electric drive types or combines them.
All work on high voltage systems is intended only
for high voltage technicians and may only be per­
formed by authorized service facilit ies in accord­
ance w ith Aud i regulations.
T he high voltage system is composed of the fol­
lowing h igh voltage components: the high volt­
age battery, the power electronics, the electric
motor, the high voltage A/C compressor and the
orange high voltage wir ing.
Hi gh vo ltag e b att e ry
The high voltage battery is located in the luggage
compartment underneath the cargo floor . You do
not need to perform any maintenance work on
the high voltage battery . Additional informat ion
about the h igh voltage battery can be fo und un­
der
~ page 104 .
The high voltage battery service plug is also
found underneath an orange cover under the car ­
go floor. The serv ice plug is provided only for use
by service personnel and must not be
removed by
others who are not trained to use it.
A WARNING
-The voltage in the high voltage system is life­
threatening . Touching a damaged high volt­
age component can result in a fatal electric
shock. The components in the high voltage
system are marked with a warning label which
warns against the h igh voltage .
- Never perform work on orange high voltage
cables or on high voltage components . Only
authorized repair fac ilities that are certified
may perform work on the high voltage sys­
tem .

-Never open or remove the service plug cover
in the center of the cargo floor .
- Never damage, alter or
remove the orange
high voltage cable or disconnect it from the
high voltage system .
- Aud i regulations must be followed during
all work performed on the high voltage sys­
tem and high voltage components.
A WARNING ,-
While in electric drive mode, the vehicle pro-
duces considerably less idling, driving and op­
erating noise than when the combust ion en­
g ine is running . This may make it difficu lt or
i mpossible fo r others such as pedestrians and
chi ldren to hear and notice the vehicle when it
i s in elect rical drive mode. Th is can lead to
collisions and injuries, for example in low
traffic areas, when maneuvering or when driv­
ing in
reverse.
A WARNING
--Never leave the vehicle unattended while in
the drive ready mode. The vehicle could begin moving if the accelerator pedal is pressed ,
even if the combustion engine is switched off .

- Do not transport fluids in open containers in
the luggage compartment. Spilled fluids
can seep underneath the cargo f loor. This
can damage the high voltage system.

Drive select provides the possibility to experience
d iff erent types of vehicle settings in one veh icle.
F or instance, using the three
Comfort, Auto and
Dynamic modes, the driver can switch from a
sporty to a comfortab le driving mode with the
press of a button.
Addit ionally, in vehicles with MM I*, the vehicle
setup for
Individual* mode can be customized by
you. This makes it possible to combine settings
such as a sporty engine tuning with comfortable
steering.
A WARNING
-
Improper use of the drive select can cause
collisions, other accidents and serious person­
al injury.
Description
App lies to vehicles: with Audi drive select
The vehicle setup in each mode depends on the
veh icle's features . However, the engine, auto­
matic transmission and steering are always in­
volved.
Engine and automatic transmission
Depending on the mode, the engine and the au ­
tomatic transm ission respond quicker or in a
more balanced manner to accelerator pedal
movements . In the sporty dynam ic mode, the au­
tomatic transmission shifts at higher RPMs .
Steering
The steering adapts in terms of steering effort
and steering ratios . Indirect steer ing that moves
eas ily, like the steering in comfort mode, is best
suited to long drives on a highway. In contrast,
dynamic mode provides sporty, direct steering.
The follow ing applies to vehicles with dynam ic
steering*: the steering rat io changes based on
vehicle speed in order to ma inta in optim um
steering effort for the driver at all times. This

sets the steering to be less sensitive at higher
speeds in order to provide improved vehicle con­
tro l. At reduced speeds, however, steering is
more direct in order to keep the steering effort as
minimal as possible when the driver is maneuver­
ing the vehicle. At low and average speeds, dy ­
nam ic steering additionally prov ides more re­
sponsive steering performance .
Adaptive dampers*
The adaptive dampers* use sensors to record in­
formation regarding steering movements, brak­ ing and acceleration operations by the driver,
road surface, driving speed, and load . This makes
it possible to adapt damping to the driving situa­
t ion virtua lly in real time. Drive select also makes
it possible to sat isfy the desire for sporty suspen­
sion (Dynamic) and comfortable suspension
(Comfort) without giving up balanced tuning (Au­
to).
Engine sound*
T he sound of the eng ine is adapted to the select ­
ed mode and ranges from subtle to spo rty.
Adaptive cruise control*
The behavior when accelerating can be adjusted
from comfortable to sporty, depending on the drive select mode. Adaptive cruise control also
responds to the driv ing behavior of the vehicle
ahead in a more conservative or sporty manner.

- In some models, the maximum vehicle
speed can only be reached in the
Auto and
Dynamic modes.
- Selecting the
Dynamic mode results in spo r­
ty shift ing characteristics. The S gear posi­
tion engages automatically.
- In vehicles that have dynamic steering*, op­
erating noise is heard when starting or stop­
ping the engine . This does not indicate a
prob lem.

foot off the accelerator pedal so that the recently
selected mode is also activated for the engine
and transm ission .
Comfort -provides a comfort-oriented vehicle
setup and is suited for long drives on highways.
Auto· provides an overal l comfortable yet dy­
namic driving feel and is suited for every day use.
Dynamic · gives the driver a sporty driving feel
and is suited to a sporty driving style.

Introduction
The automat ic transmission is controlled e lec­
tron ically . The transmission upshifts or down­
shifts automatically depending on wh ich dr ive
p rogram is selected. The powe r is transferred by
a torque converter .
When a
moderate driving style is used, the
transmission se lects the most economical d riving
mode .
It will then change up early and de lay the
downshifts to give better fuel economy .
The transm ission switches to a spo rty mode afte r
a kick-down or when the drive r uses a
sport y
d riv ing sty le
charac ter ized by quick accelerator
pedal movements, heavy acce leration, frequent
changes in speed and traveling at the maximum
speed.

In the D/5 position, the transmission can be op­
erated either in the normal mode Dor in the
spo rt mode 5. To se lect the sport mode 5, p ull
t h e se lecto r lever back briefly. Pulling the leve r
back again will select the normal mode D . The in­
strument cluster d isplay shows the se lected driv­
i ng mode.
In the
normal mode D, t he transmission auto­
matically selects the suitable gear ratio . It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and d riving
style.
Se lect t he
sport mode 5 for sporty drivi ng . The
vehicle makes fu ll use of the engine 's power.
Shifting may become noticeable when accelerat ­
i ng . Hybrid drive* : electric driving is not possible .

age to the automatic transmission and possi­
bly the catalytic converter .

-On vehicles with Audi drive select*, you can
adjust the sporty shift characteristics in the
Dynamic driving mode .Swill appear in the
i nstrument cluster display instead of 0.
- If you accidentally select N while driving ,
take your foot off the accelerator pedal im­
mediately and wa it for the engine to slow
down to idle before selecting D/S .
- Hybrid drive*: if the

is pressed while in sport mode S, the trans­
mission switches automatically to the nor­
mal mode D.
- If there is a power failure, the selector lever
will not move out of the P posit ion. The

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you again st
accidentally shifting into a forward or the re­
verse gear and causing the vehicle to move unin­
tentionally .

The selector lever lock is released as follows :

press and hold the release button on the side of
the gear selector knob

Automatic selector lever lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N po si­
tions when the ignit ion is turned on . You must
press the brake peda l and the release button to
select another position. As a reminder to the
driver , the following warn ing appears in the in­
strument cluster d isplay when the se lector is in P
and N:
When stationary apply brake pedal while select­
ing gear
The Automatic Shift Lock only functions when the
vehicle is stat ionary or at speeds be low 1 mph
(2 km/h) .
At speeds above about 1 mph (2 km/h) the Auto ·
matic Shift Lock is automatically deact ivated in
the N pos it ion .
A time delay element preven ts the selec tor lever
from locking when it is moved through the N po ­
sition (going from R to D/S). The locking element
will lock the selector lever if the lever is left in N .,..

turns to the normal range and the indicator light

rm Transmission malfunction: You can continue
driving
There is a system malfunct ion in the transmis­
sion. You may continue driving. Drive to your au­
thorized Audi dealer or qualified repair facility
soon to have the malfunction corrected.
rm Transmission malfunction: Limited driving
functionality
There is a system malfunction in the transmis­
sion . T he transmission is sw itching to emergency
mode. This mode only shifts into certain gears or
will no longer shift at all. The engine may stall.
Drive to your authorized Audi dea ler or qualified
repair facility immediately to have the malfunc­
tion corrected .
rm Transmission malfunction: Stop vehicle and
shift to park.
Do not continue driving. Select the P selector lev­
e r position and see your a uthorized Aud i dea ler
or qualified repair facility for assistance .
(D Note
If the transmission switches to emergency
mode, you sho uld take the vehicl e to an au­
thorized Audi dealership as soon as possible
to have the condition corrected.
Automatic transmission
Selector lever emergency release
If the vehicle 's power supply fails, the selector
lever can be released in an emergency .

driver or sim ilar object, press the pin down and
hold it in that position .
.,. Now press the release button and move these-
lector lever to the N position.
The selector lever can only be moved from the P
pos ition if the key is in the lock and the ignition is
switched on. If the power supply fails (for exam­
ple, the battery is discharged) and the vehicle
must be pushed or towed, move the selector lev­
er to the N position f irst using the emergency re­
lease .

-Never place or attach accessories or o ther
objects (such as cupholders, telephone
brackets, la rge, heavy o r bulky objects) on
the doors, over or n ear t he area marked
"AIRBAG" on the steering wheel, instru­
ment pane l, seat backrests or between
those areas and you rself . These objects
c ou ld cause injury in a crash, especially
when the airbags inflate.
- Never re cline the front passenge r's seat to
t ransport objec ts. Items ca n also move into
the area of the side airbag o r th e fron t air ­
bag dur ing braki ng or i n a sudden maneu­
ver . Objects near the airbags can become
projectiles and cause injury, particularly
when the seat is reclined.
A WARNING
The fine dust created when airbags deploy can
cause breathing problems for people w ith a
history of asthma or other b reathing condi ­
t ions .
-To reduce the risk of breathing problems, those w ith asthma or other respiratory con­
ditions should get fresh air right away by
gett ing out of the veh icle o r opening w in­
dows o r doo rs.
- If you are in a collision in which airbags de­
ploy, wash your hand s and face wi th mild
s oa p and wa ter before eat ing .
- Be careful not to get the dust in to your eyes,
o r in to any cuts or s cratches.
- If the resid ue should ge t into yo ur eyes,
flush them with water.
