Speed warning system
Overview
T he speed warning system helps you to keep your
driving speed below a set speed limit.
The speed warning system wa rns if the driver ex­
ceeds a prev io usly stored maximum speed. A
war ning tone w ill sound as soon as the vehicle
speed ex ceeds t he set speed by abo ut
3 m ph
(3 km/ h). At the same time, a warni ng symbo l
appears in the display. The symbol's appearance
might be different in some models .
The speed w arning sys te m has
two warning
threshold s
that function independen tly of each
other an d that have somewhat different purpos­
es:
Speed warning 1
You can use speed war ning 1 to se t the maxim um
speed while yo u are dr iving. This setting w ill re­
main in e ffec t unti l you turn
off the ign ition, as -
Driving
su ming tha t you have not changed or reset the
setting .
T he speed wa rn ing symbol . (U SA mode ls)/ .

pears when you exceed the maxim um s peed.
It
goes out when the speed falls be low the stored
max imum speed.
T he spee d warn ing symbol will also go out if the
speed
exceeds the stored max imum speed by
more than about
25 mph (40 km/h) for at least
10 seconds . The stored max imum speed is delet ­
ed .

Speed warning 2
Stor ing warn ing 2 is recomm ended if you always
want to be reminded of a ce rtain speed, for ex­
amp le when you are traveling in a coun try tha t
ha s a genera l maximum speed limi t, or if you do
not want to e xceed a specified speed for winte r
ti res.

that the maxim um speed has been sto red suc­
cessfully.
The max imum speed remains stored until it is
changed by pressing the
I SETI button again brief­
ly or unt il it is deleted by a lengthy p ush on the
button.
Speed warning 2: setting a speed limit
The MMI* or the radio control unit is used to set,
change or delete warning threshold 2 .

Wa rning threshold 2 can be set in the speed
range star ting from 20 mph to 150 mph (30 km/
h to 240 km/h) . Set tings can each be ad justed in
intervals of 5 mph (10 km/h).

A WARNING
- Always pay attention to the traffic around
you when the cruise control is in operation .
You are always respons ible for your speed
and the distance between your veh icle and
other veh icles .

-For reasons of safety, cruise control should
not be used in the city, in stop-and-go traf­
fic, on twisting roads and when road condi­
tions are poor (such as ice, fog, gravel,
heavy rain and hydroplaning) -you could
have an accident.
- Switch the cruise control off temporarily
when driving in turning lanes, highway exits
or in construction zones.
- Please note that unconsciously "resting"
your foot on the accelerator pedal causes
cruise control not to brake. This is due to
the control system being overridden by the
driver's acceleration.
- Never use the cruise control when driving
off-road or on unpaved roads. The cruise
control is intended for use only when the ve­
hicle is being operated on paved roads, and
is not suitable for use off-road or on un­
paved roads.
- If a brake system malfunction such as over­
heating occurs when the cruise control sys­
tem is switched on, the braking function in
the system may be switched off. The other
cruise control functions remain active as
long as the indicator light
0;(1)~14 (US mod­
el)/li,I (Canadian model) is on .

The brake lights illuminate as soon as the
brakes apply automatically.
Changing speed
.,. To increase/decrease the speed in increments,
tap the lever in the
010 direction ¢ page 92,
fig. 107.
.,. To increase/decrease the speed quickly , hold
the lever in the
010 direction until the de­
sired speed is displayed.
You can also press the accelerator pedal down to
increase your speed, e.g. if you want to pass
someone. The speed you saved earlier will re­
sume as soon as you let off of the accelerator
pedal.
If, however, you exceed your saved speed by
S mph
(10 km/h) for longer than S minutes, the

cruise control will be turned off temporarily. The
green symbol in the display turns white, the
saved speed is retained.
Pre-selecting speed
You con pre-select your desired speed while the
vehicle is not moving.

crease or decrease your speed.

This function makes it possible, for example, to

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)

The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you against
accidentally shifting into a forward or the re­
verse gear and causing the vehicle to move unin ­
ten tionally.

Automatic selector lever lock
T he selec tor leve r is lo cked in t he P and N posi ­
t io ns w hen the ig nition is tu rned on. You m ust
press the brake peda l and the release button to
select another position . As a reminder to the
driver, the following warn ing appears in the in ­
strument cluster d isplay when the se lector is in P
and N:
When stationary appl y brake pedal while select­
ing gear
T he Au tomatic Sh ift Lock only fu nctio ns when the
veh icle is stationary o r at spee ds be low 1 mph
(2 km/h).
At spee ds above abou t 1 mp h (2 km/h) the Au to­
ma tic Sh ift Lock is autom atically deact ivated in
the N positio n.
A time de lay e lemen t prevents the se lector lever
from lo cking whe n it i s moved thro ugh the N po­
s ition (going from R to D/S) . The locking element
will lock the selector leve r if the lever is left in N
(Ne utral) for more than approximately 1 second,
without the brake pedal being pressed.
Release button
T he release but ton on the selector leve r preve nts
the lever from be ing accidenta lly shifted into cer ­
ta in positions. Pressing this button deactivates
the se lector lever lock . Depending on the d irec­
t ion of the sh ift, the se lector lever locks at d iffer­
ent positions . The posit ions are highlighted in
the i llustration

Ignition key safety interlock
T he key cannot be removed from the ignition un ­
l ess the selector lever is in the P park position.
When the ignition key is removed , the selector
lever will be locked in the P position.

Starting on an incline

.. With the driving gear selected, press the accel ­
erator pedal carefully. The parking brake will
re lease a utomatically if your seat belt is fas ­
tened.
Under certain circumstances, such as driving in
the mountains, it may be useful to switch tempo­ rarily to the manual sh ift program in order to ad­
j ust the gears to the dr iv ing cond it ions by hand
¢ page 98 .
On slopes, activate the parking brake first and
then move the selector lever to the P position.
This prevents too m uch stress from being placed
on the locking mechanism.
A WARNING
- Unintended vehicle moveme nt can cause se­
rious injury .
- Never leave your veh icle with the engine
r u nning while in gear . If you mus t leave
your veh icle when the engine is running, ac­
tiva te t he pa rking bra ke and move the selec­
t o r lever to P .
- P owe r is still transmitted to the wheels
w hen t he engine is running at idle . To pre­
vent the vehi cle from "creeping", yo u m ust
keep your foot on the brake when the en ­
gine is running and the se lector lever is in 0/
Sor R or "tiptronic" mode is se lected .
- Do not press the acce le ra tor pedal when
changing t he se lector lever posit ion while
the vehicle is stat ionary and the engine is
running.
- Never shift into R or P whi le driving.
- Before driving down a s teep slope, reduce
your spee d and sh ift into a lower gear with
"t i pt ronic" .

-Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
peda l too often or too long when driving
down a hill. Constant braking causes the
brakes to overheat and substantially re­
duces braking performance, increases brak­
ing distance or causes complete failure of
the b rake system.
- To prevent the vehicle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, always ho ld it in
place wi th the brake pedal o r parking brake.
- Never hold the veh icle on an incl ine with a
slipping clutch. The clutch opens automati­
cally when it becomes too hot from the
overload. An indicato r lamp
mJ illum inates
and a driver message appears ¢
page 98
when the clutch is overloaded.
- If the engine must remain running, neve r
have any driving pos ition engaged when
checking under the hood. Make sure these­
lector lever has secure ly engaged and is
locked in P with the parking brake set
¢ page 217. Otherw ise, any increase in en­
gine speed may set the vehicle in motion,
even with the parking brake applied.
(D Note
- When stopping on an incline, do not try to
ho ld the vehicle in place by press ing the ac­
ce lerator pedal while a driv ing gear is se­
l ected. T his can cause the t ransmission to
ove rheat and can damage it. Activate the
parking b rake or press the b rake peda l to
prevent the vehicle from ro lling.
- Al low ing the ve hicl e to ro ll when the eng ine
i s s topped and the se lector lever is in
N w ill
damage the transmission beca use it is not
l ubricated under those ci rcumstances.
(D Tips
F or safety reasons, the parking b rake is re­
leased au tomatically only when the dr iver's
safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
D riv ing
Hill descent control
The hill descent control system assists the driver
when driving down declines .
Hill descent control is activated when the selec­
tor lever is in D/S and you press the brake pedal.
T he transmission automat ically selects a gear
that is su itable for the incline . Hill descent con­
t ro l tries to maintain t he speed ach ieved at the
t ime of b raking, w ith in phys ica l and te chnical
l imita tions.
It may still be necessary to adjust the
speed with the brakes.
Hill descent cont rol switches off once the decline
levels out or you press the acce lerator pedal.
When the speed is set in the cru ise control sys­
tem ¢
page 92, hill descent control is also acti­
vated.
,&. WARNING
H ill descent cont rol cannot over come physical
limitat ions, so it may not be able to ma intain
a constant speed under all conditions. A lways
be ready to app ly the brakes.

Introduction

Gener al inform ation
The hybr id drive is a combined drive concept that
automatically switches between combustion en­
g ine and e lectr ic drive types or combines them.
All work on h igh voltage systems is intended only
for h igh voltage technicians and may only be per­
formed by authorized service facilit ies in accord­
ance w ith Aud i regulat ions.
The high voltage system is composed of the fol­ lowing h igh voltage components : the h igh volt­
age battery, the power electron ics, the e lectr ic
motor, the high voltage A/C compressor and the
orange high voltage wir ing.
High voltage battery
The high voltage battery is located in the luggage
compartment underneath the cargo floor. You do
not need to perform any maintenance work on
the high voltage batte ry. Additional informat io n
about the h igh vo ltage battery can be found un­
der
¢ page 107 .
The high voltage battery service plug is also
found underneath an orange cover under the car ­
go floo r. The service plug is provided only for use
by service personnel and must not be removed by
others who are not trained to use it.
A WARNING
The voltage in the high voltage system is life­ threatening . Touching a damaged high volt­
age component can result in a fatal electric
shock. The components in the high voltage
system are marked with a warning label which
warns against the h igh voltage .
- Never perform work on orange high voltage
cables or on high voltage components . Only
authorized repair fac ilities that are certified
may perform wo rk on the high voltage sys­
tem .

-Never open or remove the service plug cover
in the center of the cargo floor .
- Never damage, alter or
remove the orange
high voltage cable or disconnect it from the
high voltage system .
- Audi regulat ions must be followed during
all work performed on the high voltage sys­
tem and high voltage components.
A WARNING
While in electric dr ive mode, the veh icle pro­
duces considerably less idling, driving and op­
erating noise than when the combust ion en­
g ine is running. Th is may make it difficu lt or
impossible fo r othe rs such as pedestrians and
chi ldren to hear and notice the vehicle when it
is in ele ct rical drive mode . Th is can lead to
collisions and inj uries, for example in low
traffic areas, when maneuvering or when driv­ ing in reverse.
A WARNING
Never leave the vehicle unattended while in
the drive ready mode. The vehicle could begin moving if the accelerator pedal is pressed ,
even if the combustion engine is switched off .
This may ca use coll is ions and severe or fatal
injuries . When the vehicle enters dr ive ready
mode , the status message

- When exi ting the vehicle, make su re these­
lecto r lever is in the P position, the ignition
is switched off and the hybrid system is de­
activated.

- T he h igh voltage system can be damaged if
the vehicle underbody comes into contact
with the ground . Immediately drive your
ve­
hicle to an authorized repair facility and
have it inspected.
- Do not transport fluids in open containers in
the luggage compartment. Spilled fluids
can seep underneath the cargo floor. Th is
can damage the high voltage system.

Press brake pedal to start vehicle
This message appears if you do not press the
brake pedal when starting the vehicle .
Shift to N or P to start vehicle
This message appears if the selector lever for the
automatic transmission is not in the Nor P posi­
tions when starting the vehicle.
- Hybrid drive: System fault! Power
brakes, steering malfunction possible
lfthe indicator light turns on and this message
appears, there is a malfunction in the hybrid sys­
tem . The brake booster and the power steering
may stop working. Stop the vehicle in a safe loca­
tion as soon as possible.

You may continue driving i f the i ndicator light
turns off after starting the vehicle several times .
Drive to an authorized repair facility immediate ly
to have the malfunction corrected .

Introduction
App lies to: veh icles with Audi adaptive cruise contro l
The adaptive cruise control system assists the
driver by regulat ing vehicle speed and helping to
maintain a set distance to the vehicle ahead,
within the limits of the system.
If the system de ­
tects a moving vehicle up ahead, adaptive cruise
control can brake and then accelerate your veh i­
cle . This helps to make driving more comfortable
on long highway stretches .
The braking gua rd system can warn you about an
impend ing collision and initiat e braking maneu­
vers
¢ page 115.
Adaptive cruise control and braking guard have
technical lim itations that you must know, so
please read th is section carefully, understand
how the system works and use them properly at
all times.

The area that contains the radar sensor

other objects or obs tructed with dirt, insects,
snow or ice that w ill interfere w ith the adaptive
cruise control system and braking guard. For in­
formation on cleaning, refer to¢
page 204 . The
same applies for any modifications made in the
front area . T
he function of the adaptive cruise control sys ­
tem and braking guard is limited under some
condit ions:
- Ob jects can on ly be de tected when they are
within sensor range
q page 111, fig . 125.
-The sys tem has a limited ability to de tect ob­
jects that are a short distance ahead, off to the
side of your vehicle or moving into your lane .
- Some kinds of veh icles are hard to detect; for
examp le motorcycles, ve hicles w ith hig h
ground clearance or overhanging loads may be
detected when it is too late or they may not b e
detected at all.
- When driving through curves

cruise control is switched on and braking
g uard is active. As the driver, you are still re­
sponsible for starting and for maintain ing
speed and distance to other objects . Braking
g uard is used to ass ist you . The driver must
a lways take act ion to avoid a co llision . The
driver is always respons ible for braking at the
cor rect time.
- I mproper use of adaptive cruise control can
cause collisions, other accidents and ser ious
pe rsonal injury.
- Never let the comfort and conven ience that
adapt ive cr uise control and braking g uard
offe r distract you from the need to be a lert
to traffic cond itions and the need to remain
in full control of your vehicle at all times,
- Always remember that the adapt ive cruise
control and braking guard have limits -they
will not slow the vehicle down or maintain
the set distance when you dr ive towards an
obstacle or something on or near the road
that is not moving, such as vehicles stopped
in a traff ic jam, a stalled or disab led vehicle .

obstacles that a re not mov ing can trigger a

Ill -Adaptive cruise control is switched on. No
vehicles are detected up ahead. The stored speed
is maintained .

adaptive cruise control system regulates the
speed and distance to the moving vehicle ahead
and accelerates/brakes automatically.

the vehicle ahead and what that distance is .

White vehicle -A vehicle ahead was detected.
Red vehicle -Prompt for the driver to take action

Both arrows on the scale© indicate the distance
to the vehicle ahead . No arrow appears when the
veh icle is on an open road and there is no object
ahead. If an object is detected ahead, the arrow
moves on the scale .
The green zone on the scale shows the stored dis­
tance . For information on changing the stored
distance, refer to
¢page 113. If the distance se­
lected is too close or may soon become too close,
the arrows move into the red zone on the scale .
A WARNING
Improper use of the adaptive cruise control
can cause collis ions, other accidents and seri­
ous personal injuries.
- Pressing the
! SET ! button when driving at
speeds below 20 mph (30 km/h), will auto­
matically accelerate the vehicle to 20 mph

(30 km/h), which is the minimum speed
that can be set.
@ Tips
- If you switch the ign it ion or the adaptive
cruise control off, the set speed is erased
from the system memory.
- The Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC) is
automatically turned on when the adapt ive
cruise control is turned on. You cannot
switch the ESC into offroad mode while the
adaptive cruise control is turned on
