Warning light in the instrument cluster
display
If the . warning light in the instrument cluster
display flashes, this can mean one of two things:
either the coolant
temperature is too high, or the
coolant
level is too low~ page 26.
If the needle is well in the upper area of the
gauge, the coolant temperature is too high.
Stop
the vehicle, switch the engine off, and allow it
to cool. If the warning light comes on again after
driving a short distance, contact an authorized
Audi dealer or other qualified workshop .
_& WARNING
- Always observe the warning in~ page 217,
before opening the hood and checking the
engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dr ipping from the engine compartment. You
cou ld burn yourself. Let the engine cool off
first so that you cannot hear or see any
steam or engine coo lant.
CD Note
- Mounting additional lights or accessories in
front of the air inlets reduces the cooling ef­
fect of the radiator. At high outside temper­
atures or high engine load, the engine could
overheat.
- The front spoiler has been designed to prop­
erly distribute the cooling air when the vehi­
cle is moving. If the spoiler is damaged, this
could reduce the cooling effect and the en­
gine could then overheat. Ask your author­
iz ed Audi dealer for assistance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM (revo­
lutions per minutes) .
If engine RPM drops below 1,500, you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red area at
the end of the scale indicates max imum permis­
sible engine RPM after the break-in period . Be­
fore reaching this area, move the selector lever

to posit ion D/S or ease your foot off the accelera­
tor pedal.

shou ld only briefly be in the red zone: you
could damage your engine! The beginning of
the red zone varies depending on the engine.

The !SET ! button performs the following func­
tions:
Switching on time, date, temperature

The display appears for approximately 30 sec­
onds when you press the

with the ignition off .
Starting the Auto-Check sequence
The Auto-Check system ~ page 24 constantly
monitors certain individual functions and compo­
nents of the vehicle when the ignition is turned
on and when the vehicle is moving.
With the ignit ion turned on, you can start the
"Auto-Check sequence" by press ing the
!SE TI but­
ton. You can pe rform an Auto-Check seq uence
when the vehicle is stationary and the ignition is
turned on or when the vehicle is moving slower
than 3 mph (5 km/h).

Lamp (MIL) II will illuminate. If this occurs,
contact the nearest authorized Audi dealer for
assistance.
A WARNING
Always observe the posted speed limits and
adjust your speed to suit prevailing road, traf­
fic and weather conditions. Never drive your
vehicle faster than the maximum speed rating
of the tires installed.
Auto Check Control
Introduction
The Auto-Check control monitors the function of
certa in vehicle features and components. It sim­
ply makes sure these features and components
are working properly. The Auto-Check control
works as long as the ignition is on, as well as
whenever the veh icle is driven.
-
If a component is malfunctioning or if the need
for an urgent repair has been detected, this will
appear in the instrument cluster display. You will
also hear an audib le warning tone . The displays
are color coded in eit he r red or yellow depending
on their level of priority.
A red symbol means
Danger, a yellow symbol in­
d icates
Warning . In certain s ituations, informa­
tion message for the driver appea r in addition to
the red and yellow symbols .
Note about automatic transmission
The Auto -Check Control will automatically per­
form a test each time you switch on the ignition. W ith the selector lever in P or N, the fo llowing
message appears in the display:
When stationary apply brake pedal while select­
ing gear
When you select a different gear (for example: R, D, etc.), the message will disappear and the Au­
to-Check function is displayed.
If there is a malfunct ion, then the malfunction
message will appear about 15 seconds after you
start the vehicle. At the same time you will hear a
warn ing tone.

Driver information messages are shown in the in­
strument cluster display in addition to symbols.

For example, if the transmission selector lever is
not in the P position when the engine is tu rned
off, the following message appears:
Shift to P otherwise vehicle can roll away. Doors
do not lock if lever is not in P.
The ign ition key can only be removed with these­
lector in this position. This and other messages
are brought up if a function cannot be carried
out.
Driver messages and red symbols
If a red symbol appears in the disp lay, a driver
message is also displayed automatically.
For example, the symbol for a problem with en­
gine o il pressure . appears in the display. The
follow ing message appears:
Turn off engine! Oil pressure too low
The driver message in the display goes out after
about 5 seconds. The driver message can be dis­ played again by briefly pressing the
I SETI button

If a yellow symbol appears in the display, a driver
message is also displayed automatically.

If the . symbo l in the instr um ent panel display
flashes, then the re is a malfunction in the alter­
nator or the vehicle electronics . A warning to the
driver will appear, too . The driver warning goes
out after about 5 seconds, but it can be brought
up at any t ime by pressing the
!SET ! button aga in.
Usually, you can still drive to the next dea lership .
T urn off all but the most necessary e lectrica l con­
sumers, since these drain the vehicle's battery.

If the . warning symbo l (coolant system
malfunction) also lights up on the instrument

BRAKE/C(D) Brake system malfunction
A ma/function in the brake system must be re­
paired as soon as possible .
If the warning/indicator light 11111 (USA mod­
els) . (Canada models) in the instrument clus­
ter flashes, there is a brake system malfunction.
A driver message appears as well to explain the
malfu nction in more detail. The driver wa rning
goes out after about 5 seconds, but it can be
brought up at any time by pressing the
ISETI but-

The red engine oil pressure warning symbol re­
quires immediate service or repair. Driving with a
low oil pressure indication is likely to cause se­
vere engine damage .
If the . symbol on the display flashes, the en ­

It is normal for the oil consumption of a new en­
gine to reach its lowest value after a certain mile­
age has been driven .
You must drive your vehicle abo ut 3,000 miles
(5,000 k ilometers) before you can proper ly as ­
sess oi l cons umption.
This a lso applies to fuel consumption and engine
ou tput.

Fewer short trips
Fuel consumption will always be relatively high
on short trips .
.. Try to avoid driving short distances with a cold
engine.
The engine and catalyt ic converter have to reach
their optimal
ope rating temperature to reduce
fuel consumption and noxious emissions effec­
t ively .
Just after starting, a co ld engine in a mid-size car
only achieves a fuel economy of 6-8 miles per
ga llon (30-40 l/100 km). After about a half a
mile, fuel economy cl imbs to 12 mpg (20 l/100
km). After about
2 .5 miles (4 km), the engine is
at its proper operating temperature and fuel
economy has reac hed a norma l level. So you can
see that you sho uld avo id short t rips w henever
possib le.
Driving and the envir onment
The out side tempe rature is a lso crit ica l in this re­
gard . Your car consumes more fuel in the winter
than in the summer .

Driving under difficult
conditions and off-road
General information
The operation of the Electronic Stabilization Con­
trol (ESC) is expanded for operation away from
paved roads. In situations where slip or a differ­
ential locking function is required, the offroad mode can be activated
<=> page 186. Your Audi al­
so has permanent all-wheel drive in addition .
However, your Audi is not a pure offroad vehicle.
It was not built for driving under extreme condi­
tions, e.g. for trips that are in the nature of an
expedition .
Drive only on roads and offroad sections which
match the design of your vehicle and your abili­
ties as a driver. Never take risks!
Befo re driving offroad
-Check the eng ine oil level, tire pressure, coo l­
ant level, and the fluid leve l in the windshield
washer reservoir.
- Stow luggage items and other objects in the
lu ggage compartment, and secure them
against sliding around.
After driving offroad
-After trips offroad, remove any twigs and other
foreign objects from the grill, the underbody
and the wheels. Pay specia l attention to foreign
objects (stones) which have become lodged in
the tire tread.
- Clean the body and the vehicle underside, and
inspect the vehicle for possible damage.
- Clean dirty windows, headlamp lenses, rear
lights, and license plates.
- Perform a brake check (particularly after travel­
ling through water) .
A WARNING
- Drive especially attentive ly and plan ahead
in difficult road conditions and when off­
road. Excessive speed or incorrect maneu­
vers can cause in juries and damage to the
vehicle.

- Always adapt your speed and driving style to
road, offroad, traffic, and weather condi­
tions. Drive especially slowly offroad when
your view is restricted.
- Please be aware that in offroad mode, par­
ticularly on a smooth and slippery road, the
wheels may have an increased tendency to
spin and the vehicle may break away - dan­
ger of skidding!
- Stability is limited in the offroad mode.

Avoid damage to the environment and re­
spect nature.

The following data refer to ideal conditions. De­ pending on vehicle load and ground conditions
and the env ironment, the numbers may vary. It is
the driver's responsibility to decide whether ave­
hicle can overcome a specific s ituation

Gradient angle
The number of meters in alt itude gained over a
distance of 109.4 yards or 100 meters (grade)
are given as a percentage or degrees . Informa­
tion about the gradient the vehicle can cl imb un­
der its own power (depends in part on the road
surface and eng ine power). Maximum permitted

Ground clearance
The distance between the road surface and the lowest point of the vehicle underbody. Ground

Using the proper engine oil is important for the
functionality and service life of the eng ine. Your
engine was factory-filled with a high-quality oil
which can usually be used throughout the entire
year.

Your Limited New Vehicle Warranty does not
cover damage or malfunctions due to failure
to follow recommended maintenance and use
requirements as set forth in the Audi Owner's
Manual and Warranty
& Maintenance booklet.
- Use only a high quality eng ine oil that ex-
pressly complies wi th the Audi oil quality
standard specified for your vehicle's engine.
Using any other oil can cause serious engine
damage.
- Do not mix any lub ricants or other additives
i nto the engine oil. Doing so can cause en­
g ine damage.
@ Tips
If you need to add oil and there is none availa­
ble tha t meets the Audi o il quality standard
your eng ine requi res, you may add a tota l of
no more than 0 .5 quart/li ter of a h igh-quality
"synthetic"oil that meets the fo llowing speci­
fications.
- Vehicles with gasoline eng ine: ACEA A3 or
API SM with a viscosity grade of SAE OW-30,
SAE 5W-30 or SAE 5W-40.
- Vehicles w it h diese l engine: ACEA C3 o r
API CF with a viscosity grade of SAE OW-30
or SAE 5W-30.

Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on an ade­
quate amount of oil to lubricate and cool all of
its moving parts.
In order to provide effective lub rication and cool ­
ing of internal engine components, all internal
combust ion engines consume a certa in amount
of oil. Oil consumption var ies from engine to en­
gine and may change significantly over the life of
the engine . Typically, engines w ith a specified
break-in period (see
c::;,page 194) consume more
o il dur ing the break-in per iod than they consume
after o il consumption has stabi lized .
Under normal cond itions, the rate of oil con­
sumption depends on t he quality and viscos ity of
the oil, the RPM (revolutions per m inute) at
wh ich the engine is operated, the ambient tem­
perature and road condit ions. Furthe r facto rs a re
t h e amount of o il d ilution from water condensa­
tion or fue l residue and the oxidation level of the
oi l. As any engine is subject to wear as mileage
builds up, the oil consumption may increase over
time unt il replacement of worn components may
become necessary.
With a ll these variab les coming into p lay, no
standard rate of oi l consumption can be estab­
li shed or spec ified . There is no alternative to reg­
ular and frequent checking of the oi l level, see
Note .

the operat ing cond itions, o il cons umption can be
up to a 1 /2 q uart per 600 m iles ( O.S li ter per
1,000 km) . Cons umption may be hig he r within
the first 3,000 miles (5,000 km).
