theyareproperlypositionedonthebody.Im-
properseatingpositionsreducetheeffectiveness
of safety
beltsandwillevenincreasetheriskof
injuryanddeathbymovingthesafetybelttocrit-
icalareasofthebody.Improperseatingpositions
alsoincreasetheriskofseriousinjuryanddeath
whenanairbagdeploysandstrikesanoccupant

Importanceofwearingsafetybeltsand
sittingproperly
Airbagsareonlysupplementalrestraints.For
airbagstodotheirjob,occupantsmustalways
properlyweartheirsafetybeltsandbeina prop-
erseatingposition.
Foryoursafetyandthesafetyofyourpassen-
gers,beforedrivingoff,always:
>Adjustthedriver'sseatandsteeringwheel

Inacollision,airbagsmustinflatewithinthe
blinkofaneyeandwithconsiderableforce.The
supplementalairbagscancauseinjuriesifthe
driverorthefrontseatpassengerisnotseated
properly.Thereforeinordertohelptheairbagto
doitsjob,itisimportant,bothasadriverandas
apassengertositproperlyatalltimes.
By keepingroombetweenyourbodyandthe
steeringwheelandthefrontofthepassenger
compartment,theairbagcaninflatefullyand
completelyandprovidesupplementalprotection
incertainfrontalcollisions>page253,Correct
passengerseatingpositions.Fordetailsonthe

It'sespeciallyimportantthatchildrenareproper-
lyrestrained>page288.
Thereisalotthatthedriverandthepassengers
canandmustdotohelptheindividualsafetyfea-
turesinstalledinyourAudiworktogetherasa
system.
Properseatingpositionisimportantso thatthe
frontairbagonthedriver sidecandoitsjob.If
youhaveaphysicalimpairmentorconditionthat
preventsyoufromsittingproperlyonthedriver
seatwiththesafetybeltproperlyfastenedand

reachingthepedals,orifyouhaveconcernswith
regardtothefunctionoroperationoftheAd-
vancedAirbagSystem,pleasecontactyourau-
thorizedAudidealerorqualifiedworkshop,or
callAudi CustomerRelationsat1-800-822-2834
forpossiblemodificationstoyourvehicle.
Whentheairbagsystemdeploys,agas generator
willfilltheairbags,breakopenthepaddedcov-
ers,andinflatebetweenthesteeringwheeland
thedriverandbetweentheinstrumentpaneland
thefrontpassenger.Theairbagswilldeflateim-
mediatelyafterdeploymentsothatthefrontoc-
cupantscan seethroughthewindshieldagain
withoutinterruption.
Allofthistakesplaceintheblinkofaneye,so
fastthatmanypeopledon'tevenrealizethatthe
airbagshavedeployed.Theairbagsalsoinflate
withagreatdeal offorceandnothingshouldbe
intheirwaywhentheydeploy.Frontairbagsin
combinationwithproperlywornsafetybeltsslow
downandlimittheoccupant'sforwardmove-
ment.Togethertheyhelptopreventthedriver
andfrontseatpassengerfromhittingparts of
theinsideofthevehiclewhilereducingtheforces
actingontheoccupantduringthecrash.Inthis
waytheyhelptoreducetheriskofinjurytothe
headandupperbodyinthecrash.Airbagsdonot
protectthearmsorthelowerpartsofthebody.
Bothfrontairbagswillnotinflateinallfrontal
collisions.Thetriggeringoftheairbagsystemde-
pendsonthevehicledecelerationratecausedby
thecollisionandregisteredbytheelectroniccon-
trolunit.Ifthisrateisbelowthereferencevalue
programmedintothecontrolunit,theairbags
willnot betriggered,eventhoughthecarmaybe
badlydamagedasaresultofthecollision.Vehi-
cledamage,repaircostsoreventhelackofvehi-
cledamageisnotnecessarilyanindicationof
whetheranairbagshouldinflateornot.
Sincethecircumstanceswillvaryconsiderably
betweenonecollisionandanother,itisnotpossi-
bletodefinearangeofvehiclespeedsthatwill
cover everypossiblekindandangleofimpact
thatwillalwaystriggertheairbags.Important
factorsinclude,forexample,thenature(hardor
soft)oftheobjectwhichthecarhits,theangleof
impact,vehiclespeed,etc.Thefrontairbagswill>

alsonotinflateinsideorrearcollisions,orinroll-
overs.
Alwaysremember:Airbagswilldeployonlyonce,
andonlyincertainkindsofcollisions.Yoursafety
beltsarealwaystheretoofferprotectioninthose
situationsinwhichairbagsarenotsupposedto
deploy,
orwhenthey havealreadydeployed;for
example,whenyourvehiclestrikesorisstruckby
anothervehicleafterthefirstcollision.
Thisisjustoneofthereasonswhyanairbagisa
supplementaryrestraintandisnotasubstitute
forasafetybelt.Theairbagsystemworksmost
effectivelywhenusedwiththesafetybelts.
Therefore,alwaysproperlywearyoursafetybelts

ZAWARNING
Sittingtooclosetothesteeringwheelorin-
strumentpanelwilldecreasetheeffective-
nessoftheairbagsandwillincreasetherisk
ofpersonalinjuryinacollision.
—Neversitcloserthan10inches(25cm)to

—Ifyoucannotsitmorethan10inches
(25cm)fromthesteeringwheel,investi-
gatewhetheradaptiveequipmentmaybe

—Allvehicleoccupantsandespeciallychildren
mustberestrainedproperlywheneverriding
inavehicle.Anunrestrainedorimproperly
restrainedchildcouldbeinjuredbystriking

Anunrestrainedorimproperlyrestrained
childisalso atgreaterriskofinjuryordeath
throughcontactwithaninflatingairbag.

tingsidewaysoroutofpositioninanyway,
yourriskofinjuryismuchhigher.
—Youwillalsoreceiveseriousinjuriesand
couldevenbekilledifyouareupagainstthe

—Toreducetheriskofinjurywhenanairbag

—Alwaysmakecertainthatchildrenage12or

placeforachildtoride.Thefrontseatisnot the

ployment”forchildrenaged3to6yearsold(as
definedinthestandard).

headlinertellsyouwhenthefrontAdvancedAir-
bagonthepassengersidehasbeenturnedoffby
theelectroniccontrolunit.
Eachtimeyouturnontheignition,thePASSEN-

ThefrontAdvancedAirbagSystemforthefront
seatoccupantsisnotasubstituteforyoursafety
belts.Rather,itispart oftheoveralloccupantre-
straintsysteminyourvehicle.Alwaysremember
thattheairbagsystemcanonly helptoprotect
you,ifyouaresittingupright,wearingyoursafe-
tybeltandwearingitproperly.Thisiswhyyou
and
yourpassengersmustalways beproperlyre-
strained,notjustbecausethelawrequiresyouto
be.
TheAdvancedAirbagSysteminyourvehiclehas
beencertifiedtomeetthe“lowrisk”require-
mentsfor3and6year-oldchildrenonthepas-
sengersideandverysmalladultsonthedriver
side.Thelowriskdeploymentcriteriaare intend-
edtohelpreducetheriskofinjurythroughinter-
actionwiththefrontairbagthatcanoccur,for
example,bybeingtooclosetothesteeringwheel
andinstrumentpanelwhentheairbaginflates.
Inaddition,thesystemhasbeencertifiedto
complywiththe“suppression”requirementsof
theSafetyStandard,toturnoffthefrontairbag
forinfants12monthsoldandyoungerwhoare
restrainedonthefrontpassengerseatinchildre-
straintsthatarelistedintheStandard
=page290,ChildrestraintsandAdvancedAir-
bags.
“Suppression”requiresthefrontairbagonthe
passengersidetobeturnedoffif:
—achilduptoaboutoneyearofageisrestrained
onthefrontpassengerseatinoneoftherear-

withwhichtheAdvancedAirbagSysteminyour

ThePASSENGERAIRBAGOFF#;lightcomeson
whentheelectroniccontrolunitdetectsatotal
electricalcapacitanceonthefrontpassengerseat
thatrequiresthefrontairbagtobeturnedoff.If
thePASSENGERAIRBAGOFF3;lightdoesnot
comeon,thefrontairbagonthepassengerside
hasnotbeenturnedoffby thecontrolunitand
candeployifthecontrolunitsenses animpact
thatmeetstheconditionsstoredin itsmemory.
Ifthetotalelectricalcapacitanceregisteredon
thefrontpassengerseatismorethanthatofa
typical1year-old,butlessthantheweightofa
smalladult,thefrontairbagonthepassenger
sidemaydeploy(thePASSENGERAIRBAGOFF
8%;lightdoesnotcomeon).
Forexample,theairbagmaydeployif:
—asmallchildthatisheavierthanatypical1
