Many functions are monitored by the Auto -Check system
=>
page 30. Malfunctions or faults wil l be identified either with a red
symbo l (pr ior ity 1 -Danger!) or with a yellow symbol (priority 2 -
Warning). •
Electronic power control r
This warning/indicator light monitors the electr oni c
power control.
The warning/indicator light (E lectronic Power Control) illumi -
nates when you turn on the ignition as a function check .
[ i ) Tips
If this warning/indicator light illumi nates whi le you are driving, then
there is a malfunction in the engine electronics . Have the malfunc ­
tion corrected as soon as possible by your authorized Audi dealer or
qualified workshop .•
Electronic stabilization program (ESP) ~
This warning/indicator light monitors the electronic stabi ­
lization program .
The warning/indicator light has the following functions:
• It blinks while you are dr iving when the ESP is working.
• It illuminates when you switch on the ignition for approximately
2 seconds as a function check.
Controls and equip ­
ment

• It illuminates when there is a malfunction in the ESP .
• It illumina tes when ESP or ASR (Anti -Sl ip Regulat ion) is deact i­
vated .
• It illuminates if there is a malfunction in the ABS, since the ESP
is part of the ABS system.
If the battery termina ls were disconnected and re -connected, the
vehicle was jump started or the battery is
very weak, the ESP senso r
system goes through a learn ing process for the first few yards . The
warning/indicator light i lluminates . The warning/indicator light
goes out as soon as the learning process is complete.
If the ESP warning/indicator light i lluminates and stays on after you
have started the engine, this may mean that the control system has
temporarily switched off the ESP. If this is case, you can reactivate
the ESP by turning the ignition off and then on again. The
warning/indicator light should go out to show that the system is
fully functional again.

Airbag system
~i (USA models) / !_~-(Canada models)
This warning/indicator light monitors the airbag and the
tensioner systems .
The i (USA models) f! lt (Canada models) warning light i lluminates
for a few seconds each time you switch on the ignition.
I f the
ffl (USA mode ls) l! go out, or if it illuminates whi le you are driving, or if it starts to blink,
then there is a malfunction somewhere in the system. If the light
does not illum inate when you switch on the ignition, this also
means there is a malfunction. ..,_

Instruments and warning/indicator lights
& WARNING
If you have a malfunct ion in the airbag system, contact your autho­
rized Audi dealer immediately. Otherwise the airbag or the belt
tensioner may not work properly in an accident. •
Tire pressure monitoring system -telltale
indicator lamp '-)
The warning/indicator light appears in the event of a
significant loss of air pressure .
The ( warning/indicator light il luminates for a few seconds after
the ignition is turned on as function check and then goes out.
If the symbo l appears, pressure is too low in at least one tire.
When the system detects a malfunction, the warning/indicator light
will flash for approximately one minute and then remain continu­ ously i lluminated . This sequence wi ll continue upon subsequent
vehic le starts up as long as the malfunction exists. Contact your
authorized Audi dealer and have the malfunction corrected .

Turn signals ¢ Q
The indicator light blinks when you use either turn signal.
Whenever you use the left ¢i or the right¢ turn signal, the ind icator
light blinks. When you use the emergency flashers, both indicator
lights flash .
If one of the turn signal light bulbs burn out, the turn signal will
blink twice as fast as normal.
This does not apply, however, in towing mode . The indicator light
does not flash if a turn signal is out on the trailer or the towing
vehic le. Additional information on the turn signa ls=>

The indicator light also blinks if the turn signal is operated
when towing a trailer.
The indicator light ¢1i> bl inks when the turn signal is used, if a trailer
has been properly connected to the vehicle.
If one of the turn signa l bu lbs on the trailer is burned out or defec ­
tive, the indicator light will not b link when you use the turn signals.
[ i ] Tips
For vehicles with a factory installed towing hitch or a trailer hitch
that was installed later according to factory specifications, the
trailer turn signa l assembly is actuated. •
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) :,
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIU is part of the On-Board Diag ­
nostic (OBD II) system. The symbo l lights up when the ignition is
turned on and will turn off after the engine has started and has
settled at a constant idle speed . This indicates that the MIL is
working properly.
The warning light il luminates when there is a malfunction in the
engine electronic system. Contact your authorized Audi dealer and
have the malfunction corrected.
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also cause the MIL light to
illuminate
=> page 327.

Lane assist (system is ready) /:
The indicator light shows that the system is ready to use. A warning
a lerts the driver when the vehicle drives over detected lane
boundary lines .

Safety belts i
This warning/indicator light reminds you to put on y our
safety belt.
The , ff-warning /indicator light i lluminates when the igni tion is
switched on to remind the d river and (on USA models only) any front
passenger to put on the safety belt . Additionally, an acoustic
warning (gong) will also sound.

Controls and equip ­

• If the warn ing/indicator light illuminates or blinks continuously,
there is a system fau lt in the Adaptive Air Suspension. A system
faul t can result in limited ride comfo rt and
low g ro und cle ar an ce .
Drive safely to the nearest authorized Audi dealer or qualified work ­
shop, and have the fault correc ted.
• If the warning /indicator light flashes, you should not drive the
vehic le . The flashing warning /indicator light points to an extreme
High level. A very
pronounced lifting of the vehic le (extreme High
level) can resu lt, for example, when a heavy load is removed from
the vehicle. As soon as the level has returned to normal, the
warning/indicator light stops flashing, and you can drive away .
• If the warning /indicator light flashes in conjunction with the
a,
warning /indicato r light , you should not drive off immediately in
order to prevent damage to the underbody . The two warning /indi ­
cator lights flashing together points to an extreme Low level. A very
pronounced lowering of the vehicle (extreme Low level) can result,
for examp le, from a heavy load. As soon as the level has returned to
nor mal, th e warning/indicator lights stop flashing, and you can
drive away.

• It comes on for approximately 15 seconds as a warning of
reduced ground clearance, if the dynamic mode is activated and if
the ignition is switched on~

• If the warning/indicator light flashes in conjunction with the ;,
warning/indicator light, you should not drive the vehicle immedi­
ately in order to prevent damage to the underbody. The two
warning/indicator lights flashing together points to an extreme Low
level. A very

High beam ~D
The ~D warning/indicator light illuminates when the high beams are
on or when you use the headlight flasher. For more information

Cruise control
CRUISE (USA models) /(7)'2 (Canada models)
The warning/indicator light illuminates when the cruise control is
activated. •
Anti-lock brake system (ABS)
.. c_ (USA models)/ ~ (Canada models)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS and the
electronic differential lock (EDL).
The warning/indicator light will come on for a few seconds when the
ignition is switched on . The light will go out after an automatic
check sequence is completed.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
• The warning/indicator light does not illuminate when you switch
on the ignition .
• The warning/indicator light does not go out after a few seconds.
• Th e warning/indicator light illuminates while driving.
The brake system will still respond even without the assistance of
the ABS system. See your authorized Audi dealer as soon as
possible to restore full braking performance.

The ABS warning light and the brake warning light come on
together. The ABS will not work and you will notice a change in
braking response and performance .
Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake warning light~ page 23and the ABS warning illuminate
together there may be a malfunction in the ABS, and there may also
be a malfunction in the brake system itself~& .
In the event of a
malfunction in the brake system the warning/indi ­
cator light
BRAKE (USA models)/ ((D) !Canada models) in the instrument
cluster flashes. By pressing the
!CHECK] button, you can bring up a
driver message which explains the malfunction in more detail.

& WARNING
• If the J.. S (USA models l/ .J (Canada models ) warning light
does not go out , or if it comes on while driving , the ABS system is
not working properly. The vehicle can then be stopped only with
the standard brakes (without
ABS) . You will not ha ve the protec­
tion ABS provides. Contact your authorized Aud i dealer as soon a s
possible.
• USA model s: If the
BRAKE warning light and the B" warning
light come on together , the rear wheel s could lock up fir st under
hard braking . Rear wheel lock-up can cause loss of vehicle control
and an acc ident. Have your vehicle repaired immed iately by your
authorized Audi dealer o r a qualified workshop . Drive slowly and
avoid sudden , hard br ake applications .
• Canada models: If the brake warning light ID and the ABS
warning light come on together, the rear wheels could lock up
first under hard br aking . Rear wheel lock-up can cause loss of
vehicle control and an accident. Have your vehicle repaired imme ­
diately by your authorized Audi dealer or a qualified workshop .
Drive slowly and avoid sudden , hard brake applications. •

the engine has been started. Th is indicates that the brake warning

If the br ake warning light does not light up when the engine is
cranking , there may be a malfunction in the electrical system . In this
case , contact your Audi dealer .

• Canada models: If the brake warning light «D> and the ABS
warning light come on together, the rear wheels could lock up
first under hard braking . Rear wheel lock-up can cause loss of
vehicle control and an accident. Have your vehicle repaired imme­ diately by your authorized Audi dealer or a qualified workshop .
Drive slowly and avoid sudden, hard brake applications.
• If the brake warning/indicator light does not go out after a few
seconds and the parking brake released, or lights up while you are
driving, the fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir is too low . If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed immediately at low speed
to the nearest authorized Audi dealer or qualified repair facility
and have the brake system inspected.
• Always keep in mind that after several brake applications, you
will need greater pressure on the brake pedal to stop your vehicle. Do not rely on strained brakes to respond with maximum stopping
power in critical situations. You must allow for increased braking
distances . The extra distance used up by fading brakes could lead
to an accident. •

Introduction
General notes
The driver information display inside the instrument
cluster provides you, the driver, with much useful infor­
mation.

Information from the Driver Information System is shown in the
display in the center of the instrument cluster.
When you turn on the ignition and whi le you are driving, some func ­
tions and vehicle components are scanned for their operating status . Malfunctions or required service procedures are signa lled
audibly and shown by red and yellow lighted symbols and
reminders to the driver in the display .
The driver is also shown information about radio and CD operation and directions for the navigation system . You can find additional
information on these subjects in the MMI manual.

At temperatu res be low 41 °F (+5 °C) a snowfla ke symbo l appears
ahead of the te mper atu re dis play. It is intended to remind the dr iver
to pay special attention to
ice on the road.
I f the ve hic le is stationary, o r if you are driving at a ve ry low speed,
t h e te m pe ratu re show n in the di spl ay might be sl ight ly h ig he r th an
the actua l out side temperat ure. This is caused by the heat being
rad iated fro m th e en gin e.
I f yo u have se lected the ° C (degr ees Celsius) unit for temperature in
th e
MMI , th e ou tsi de tempera ture d isplay a lso a ppears automati ­
ca lly in ° C.
& WARNING
• Never rely exclusively on the outside temperature display to
determine if a road surface is icy or not. Keep in mind that road
surfaces , especially bridges and overpasses , could be ice covered
and slippery even at an outside temperature above 41 °F (+5 °C ).
• Always remembe r, even if the "snowflake " symbol (ice
warning) does not appear in the display , black ice could be on the
road .
• Alway s reduce your speed and drive with special care in cold
weather conditions when the chance of encountering icy road
surfaces increases . •

Current speed appears in the display . Speed is shown in 1 mph
measures (USA models) or 1 km/h measures (Canada models).
You can switch the display from miles to kilometers and vice versa
via the MMI. •
Open door or trunk lid warning
The pictogram alerts you when doors or the rear lid have
been left open.

With the ignition switched on, the open door or rear lid warning illu ­
minates when at least
one door or the hood or the trunk lid is not

closed. The symbol also shows you which door(s) or lid is not
closed.
In the illustration=> fig. 12 it is the driver's door, the left rear door
and the rear lid. As soon as all the doors, the hood, the rear lid and
the fuel filler cap are properly closed, the door and rear lid warning
turns off and the Driver Information System functions selected are
displayed again .•
Defective light bulb warning
The defective light bulb warning tells you when a vehicle
light bulb has become defective.

The defective light bulb warning monitors the function of the light
bulbs . If this symbol illuminates, a brake light, a turn signal (front
or rear), a headlight, the backup light, a fog light or a rear fog light
has failed.
& WARNING
• Light bulbs are pressurized and could explode while they are
being changed causing serious personal injury.
• Work with due care when handling the high-voltage section of
gas discharge (xenon) lights. Failure to do so could result in death
or serious injury . ..,

Have the bulb replaced or the connection repaired by your autho­
rized Audi Service department. •
Service interval display
The service interval display reminds you when your next
service is due.

The date for service is calcula ted automatically .
Service inquiry (distance remaining )
The distance remaining to the next service event can be displayed
in the MMI => fig. 14. The distance remaining is updated each time the ignition is switched on, the first time after 310 miles (500 kilome­
t
ers).
If the distance remaining is queried on new vehicles or after service
has been performed, the due date within the first 310 miles (500
kilometers) is always shown in the display with the following
message.

Service reminder
30 days before the next service is due, a service reminder appears
in the display when you turn on the ignition=> fig. 15.
After about 5 seconds the display switches back to normal. The
distance and time remaining are updated each time the ignition is
turned on until the date due for service is reached.
Service
When the due date for service is reached, the message Service due
! appears in the display immediately after you turn on the ignition .
Additionally, a warning tone sounds . After about 5 seconds the
display switches back to normal.
0 Note
If you disconnect the battery terminals, no calculations can be
made for the service interva l display during this time and no service
reminder will appear. Remember that observing the proper service
interva ls is vitally important to extending the life of your vehicle,
particularly the engine, and maintaining its value. Even if the
mileage driven is low, the maximum period of one year from one
service to the next must not be exceeded.•
