Trailer towing
Driving with a trailer
General information Your Audi was design ed primarily for passenger transpor ­
tation .
If you plan to tow a t rai ler, p lease rem emb er that the add itiona l load
wi ll affect durab ility, economy and performance.
T railer tow ing not on ly p laces mo re s tress on the vehicle, it a lso calls
for more concentrat ion from the driver.
For this reason, a lways follow the ope rating and dr iv ing instr uctions
prov ided and use common sense .

Technical requirements
Trailer hitch
Use a we igh t-car rying hit ch confo rm ing to the g ross tra ile r weig ht.
The hitch must be suitable for your vehicle and tra iler and must be
mou nted secure ly o n th e veh icle's chassis a t a
te chnically sound loca­
tion. Use only a trailer hitch with a removab le ba ll mount. Always
check w ith the tra iler h itch manufacturer to ma ke sure tha t you are
using the correct hitch .
Do not use a bumper hitch .
The hitch must be i nstalled in such a way t hat i t does not interfe re
w ith the impact-absorbing bumper system. No mod ificat ions should

be made to the vehicle exhaust and b
rake systems. From time to
time, check that all hitc h mounting bo lts rema in securely fastened.
Whe n you are no t towing a trai ler, remove the trailer hi tch ba ll
mount. This prevents the hitch from caus ing damage should your
vehicle be s truck from behind::::;,& .
Trailer brakes
If your trailer i s eq uipped w ith a b raking system, che ck to be s ure that
it conforms to all regulat ions.
T he tra iler hyd raulic brake system must not be directly connected to
the vehi cle's hydraul ic brake system ::::;, & .
Safety chains
Always use safety chains betwee n your vehicle and t he tra iler .
Trailer lights
Trailer lights must meet all regulat ions. Be sure to check w ith your
au thor ized A udi deale r for co rrect wi ring, switc hes, and re lays.
Mirrors
If you are unab le to see the traff ic beh ind you us ing t he regular
outside m irro rs, then you
must install extended mirro rs. It is impor­
t an t th at yo u
always have cle ar vision to the re a r.
& WARNING
• If a trailer has electrical brakes please note that these brakes
are not activated by the factory-fitted control unit -ri sk of acci ·
dent!
• Afte r removing the trailer hitch, do not store it in your vehicle .
In case of sudden braking, the hitch could fly forward and injure
you or your passengers .

Trailer towing tips
Important to know
Your vehicle handles differe ntly when tow ing a tra iler because of the
additiona l weight and different we ight distribution. Safety, perfor­
man ce and economy w ill greatly depend on how ca refu lly yo u load
your trailer and operate your rig.
Be fore you actua lly tow your tra ile r, prac tice turning, stopp ing and
back ing u p in a n area away from traffic. Keep pract ic in g until you have
become completely familiar with the way your vehicle -trailer combi­
nation behaves and responds .
Backing up is diff icult and requ ires pract ice. Backing up w ith a trailer
gene rally requires s teer ing a ction opposi te to th at when ba cki ng up
your vehicle witho ut a trailer.
Maintain a greate r d istance between your ve hicl e and the one in front
of yo u. You will need more room to stop . T o compensate fo r the
trai ler, you will need a larger than normal turning radius .
W hen p assing, remember that you c annot acceler ate as fast as yo u
normally wou ld because of the added load. Make sure yo u have
enoug h room to pass. After passi ng, allow plen ty of room fo r yo ur
tra iler before changing lanes again .
Avoid jerky starts, sharp turns or rapid lane changes .

• Do not tow a trai ler d uring the brea k-in perio d of your vehicle. •
If you tow a tra iler, your Aud i may require more frequent mai nte­

Parking on a slope
Do not park on a slope with a trailer. If it cannot be
av oided, do so only after doing the following:
When parking:
- Apply the foot brak e.
- Have someone p lac e chocks un der bo th the vehicle and t he
traile r w he els .
- With c hoc ks i n place, slowly release the brakes u ntil the
wheel c hoc ks absorb t he load.
- Turn the w hee ls towards t he curb .
- A pply the parking brake.
- M ove th e selector le v er to
P.
When restarting after parking:
- A pply the foot brake .
- Start the engine .
- Mov e th e s elector lever to
D .
- Release the par king brake a nd s low ly pull o ut and away
fro m the w heel chocks.
- Stop a nd have someone retr ieve the w heel chocks .

through use. Steam cleaners should not be used , because the steam
t ends t o push the dirt d eeper into the fa bric and lock it th ere.
Normal cleaning
Genera lly, we re commen d using a soft sponge or a lin t-free
m icrofiber cloth to the clean fabric. Brushes should on ly be used fo r
c arpets and floor m ats, s ince other fabric sur faces could be harmed
by brushes .
N orma l s ur face sta ins can be cleaned using a comme rcially avai lab le
foam cleaner . Spread t he foa m on the surface of the fabr ic w it h a soft
sponge and work it in gently . Do not saturate the fabr ic. T hen pat the
fo am dr y usin g abso rbent, dr y cl oths (e.g. microfibe r cl ot h) a nd
vacuum it afte r it has dr ied comp lete ly.
Cleaning stains
Sta ins caused by beverages (e.g. coffee, fruit ju ice, etc.) can be
treated with a mild detergen t so lutio n. Apply th e det ergent solut io n
w ith a sponge. In the case of stubborn stains, a dete rgent paste can
be applied dire ctly to t he s tain and wor ked in to the fabric . A fter­
wa rds , use copious amo unts of clean water to remove the rema ining
deter gent . App ly th e wa ter w ith a damp cloth o r spo nge and pa t the
fabric d ry with an absorbent, dry cloth .
Sta ins from choco late or makeup sho uld have dete rgent paste (e.g .
ox-gall soap) ru bbed into them. Afterwards, remove the soap w ith
water (damp spo nge).
Alcoho l can be used to treat st ains fro m gre ase, oil, lips tick or a ba ll­
point pen . Melted g rease o r dye must be patted off us ing absorbe nt
m ate rial. It may be ne cess ary to re tre at th e ar eas wi th deterge nt
paste a nd water .
In the case of genera l soiling of the upholste ry and cover mater ia l, we
reco mmen d hir ing a spec ialist th at has the equ ipment to clean the
seat covers and other fa bric surfaces by shampooing and s pray
ex tra ct io n.

Please make sure that Velc ro fasteners are closed. •
Plastic parts and instrument panel
Always use a clean cloth moistened in clear water to clea n these
areas . For persistent dirt use an A udi approve d
solvent-free plastic
cleaner/protectant .
& WARNING
Solvents can change the properties of some plastics and make it
harder for the airbag to deploy.
• Never clean the instrument panel or the su rface of airbag
module s with cleaning produ ct s that contain solvents.
• Products containing solvents will make the surface of this part
porous.
• Seriou s injuries can result if plast ic parts come loose when the
airbag is deployed .
• Always read and heed all WARNINGS and other information
:=>page 274 .

Cleaning and caring for leather upholstery
and trim
Natural leather requires special care and attention.
Normal cleaning
-Clean so iled areas with a slightly moistened cotton or
woolen cloth .
More stubborn dirt
- More stubborn dirt can be removed using a cloth satu­
rated with a mild soap solution (2 tablespoons mild liquid
soap).
- Never allow the soap solution to saturate the leather, and
make certain that no water soaks into the seams.
-Wipe off the soap solution with a soft, dry cloth.
Cleaning spots
- Remove fresh water-based spots (such as coffee, tea,
juices, blood) with an absorbent cloth or paper towel.
- Remove fresh
grease or oil-based spots (such as butter,
mayonnaise, chocolate) with an absorbent cloth or paper
towel, or use the cleaner from the leather care kit if the
spot has not yet penetrated into the surface of the
leather.
- Use an oil/grease dissolving spray, if
oil/grease spots
have dried on .
-Remove specific kinds of spots (ballpoint pen, felt marker,
fingernail polish, water-based paint, shoe polish, etc .)
with a spot remover specifically formulated for leather.
Leather care
- Every half year use an approved leather care product
(available from your authorized Audi dealer) to care for
the leather.
- Apply the product very sparingly .
- Wipe it off with a damp cloth .
If you have any questions about cleaning and caring for the leather in
your vehicle, it is best to contact your author ized Audi dealer, who will
be glad to help you and tell you about our fu ll range of leather care
products, such as:
• Leather cleaning and care kit
• Creams to care for colored leather
• Spot removers for ba llpoint pens, shoe polish, etc.
• Oil/grease dissolving spray
• New and upcoming products .

Changing brake fluid
Have the b rake fluid chan ged by an exp eri enc ed t echni ­
cian.
B ra ke flui d absorbs mois ture fro m th e air . If the w ater con ten t in the
brake fl uid is too high, corros io n in th e brake system may result afte r
a p eriod of time. The boil ing po int of the br ake fl uid will also de cre as e
cons iderab ly and decr ease brak ing performa nce.
Th erefo re, the brake fl uid m ust be changed
every two years. Always
use new br ake fluid w hich conforms to Federal Motor Veh icle Stan­
dard "FMVSS 1 16 DOT
4" .
The b rake fl uid reservo ir can be diffi cult to rea ch, there fore, we
recommend that you have the brake fluid c hanged by your author ized
Audi dealer. Your dea ler has the correct tools, the rig ht b rake f luid
and the k now-how to do t his for you .
& WARNING
• Brake fluid is poisonous. It must be stored only in the closed
original container out of the rea ch of children!
• Brake failure can result from old or inappropriate brake fluid.
Observe these precautions:
-Use only brake fluid that meets SAE specification
J 1703 and
conforms to Federal Motor Vehicle Standard 116. Alway s check
with your authorized Audi dealer to make sure you are using
the correct brake fluid. The correct type of brake fluid is also indicated on the brake fluid reservoir .

-The brake fluid must be new. Heavy use of the brakes can
cause a vapor lock if the brake fluid is left in the system too
long . This can seriously affect the efficiency of the brakes as
well as your safety . This could result in an accident.

Battery
General information
Under normal operat ing co ndit io ns, the battery in your Aud i does not
need any maintenance. With high outs ide temperatures or long daily
dr iv es we re comme nd that yo u have th e ele ct rolyte level checked by
an a uth orized Audi dealer o r qualified wor kshop. The electro lyte leve l
s ho uld a ls o be che cked e ach time the batte ry is ch arge d=>
page 311.
Have the batte ry chec ked when yo u take yo ur vehicle in for serv ice.
Yo u ar e well advised to rep lace a batte ry that is older th an 5 years .
W ith certa in types of airbag deployme nt, the ba ttery is disconnected
from the vehicle e lectrica l system for safety reasons=>

Disconnecting the battery terminals
Some vehicle f unct ions (powe r window regula to rs, fo r ex am ple) are
lost if the batt ery t ermina ls are disconnec ted . These func tions hav e
to be re lea rne d after the battery term ina ls a re co nnecte d aga in . To
prev en t th is, t he battery should only b e disconn ecte d from th e
vehicle e lectr ica l system when absol ute ly necessary for repairs .
Vehicles not driven for long periods
If you do not drive your veh icle over a period of seve ra l days o r wee ks,
el ect rical compo nents are g radually cu t back or swi tched off . This
re duces ene rgy consumption an d maintains start in g ca pability ove r a
lo nger pe riod=>

Take into consideration t hat when you unlock your vehicle, some
c onvenie nce func tions, such a s the m aster key remote function or
power seat ad justment , may not be ava ilab le. T he conven ience func ­
t ions wi ll be available again when you turn on the ignition and st art
t he engin e.
Winter operation
Dur ing the w inter months, batte ry capac ity tends to decrease as
t empe ra tures drop . This is beca use mo re powe r is also co nsu med
w hile starting, and the headlights, rear w indow defogger, etc ., are
used more often .
Avoid unnecessa ry power consu mptio n, part icularl y in city tra ffic o r
w hen trave ling on ly short distances . Let your author ized A udi deale r
ch eck t he capa city of the vehicle ba ttery before w inter sets in

page 311. A well charged battery will not only prevent start ing
pro blems when the we ather is co ld, but wi ll a lso la st l onge r.

tempe ratures, t he ve hicle battery should be removed and stored

Battery acid contains sulfuric acid. Always wear
gloves and eye protection.

When a battery is charged, it produces hydrogen
gas which is explosive and could cause personal injury.

dren.

Tire pressure indicator appears
The tire pressure indicator in the instrument cluster
informs you if the ti re pressure is too low or if there is a
system malfunction.

Us ing the ABS sensors, the tire pressure monitoring system compares
t he t ire tread c ircumference and vibrat ion characte rist ics o f the indi ­
vidual tires. If the pressure decreases in one or more tires, this is indi­
cated in the ins trument cl uste r wi th a warning symbol
1 and a
message=> fig. 244 . The dr iver message in the display goes o ut after
5 seconds . T he driver message can be disp layed again by p ressing the
[ CHECK ] button. If only one t ire is affected , the display will ind icate
its position . The tire press
ure monitoring must be reset via MMI each time the
pressu res are adju sted (e.g. when sw itching between partial and full
load pressure) or after chang ing or replacing a t ire on your veh icle
=>
page 335. You can find the recommended tire pressures fo r your
vehicle on the label o n the dr iver's door pillar=>

Ti re tread circumference and v ibration characterist ics can change and
c ause a tire p ress ure warning if:
• the tire pressure in one or more tires is too low,
• t he ti re has s tructur al damage,
• the t ire pressure was changed, wheels rotated or rep laced but the

& WARNING
• If the tire pressure indicator appear s in the instrument cluster
display, one or more of your tires is significantly under-inflated.
Reduce your speed imm ediately and avoid any hard steering or
brak ing maneuvers . Stop as soon as possible and check the tires
and their pres sures. Inflate the tire pre ssure to the proper pres­
s u re as indicated on the vehicle 's tire pressure label=>
page 318.
Driving on a significantly under-inflated tire cau ses the tire to
overheat and can lead to tire failure . Under-inflat ion also is l ikely
to impair the vehicle 's handling and stopping ability .

• The driver is responsible for maintaining the correct tire pres­
sure s. You must check the tire pressures regularly.
• Under certain conditions (such as a sport y driving style , winter
cond ition s or unpaved roads) , the pre ssure monitor indicator may
be delayed.
• Ask your authorized Audi dealer if run-flat t ires may be used on
your vehicle. Your vehicle registration becomes invalid if you use
the se tires when not permitted. Damage to your vehicle or acci­
dents could al so result.
[ i ] Tips
• Th e tire pressure monito ring system stops wo rking when there is
an ESP/ABS ma lf u nct ion.
• Using snow cha ins may res ult in a sys tem malfunction.
• The tire press ure mon itor ing system on your Audi was calibrated
u sing t ires wi th the "AO" or "RO" identifi cat ion . W e recommend
using these tires. •
Reset tire pressure monitoring system
If the tire pres sur e is adjuste d, wheels ore ro tated o r
change d, th e TP MS mus t be rese t via MMI .

- Select : Func tion button [C AR]> Systems* > Tire pressure
monitoring > Store now .

Before resetti ng the T PMS, the curr ent pr essures of all fo ur tires
must co rrespond to the specif ied values. Adjust the tire pressure and

Release the two hook-and-loop fasteners, and remove the two
chocks . To use the chocks, you first have to raise the support plate
=>
page 336, fig . 248 (D and then insert the locking plate with the
two "tabs" into the elongated holes in the base plate @=>& .
& WARNING
• The chock cannot fulfil its function and may lose its stability if
the "tabs" on the support plate are not inserted correctly into the
elo ngated holes in the base plate. If this happens, the vehicle may
start to move while a wheel is being changed.
• Never use the folding chocks if they are damaged or if they
have not been assembled correctly.
& WARNING
Improper use of the vehicle jack can cause serious personal inju­
ries.
• Never use the jack supplied with your Audi on another vehicle,
particularly on a heavier one. The jack is only suitable for use on
the vehicle it came with.
• Using a bumper jack to raise the vehicle will damage the
bumper system. The jack may slip, causing injury.
• Never support your vehicle on cinder blocks, bricks or other
objects . These may not be able to support the load and could cause
injury when they fail.
• Never start or run the engine while the vehicle is supported by
the jack.
• If you must work under the vehicle, always use safety stands
specifically designed for this purpose.
• Always make sure the inflatable spare tire and even a flat tire
are secured in place and not loose, otherwise they could fly
forward, causing personal injury to passengers in the vehicle in an
accident or sudden maneuver. •

Removing bass box
Before the inflatable spare tire can be taken out, the bass
box must be removed.

-Squeeze the locking tabs=> fig. 249 (D of the connector.
- Disconnect the connector @ and place the lead to one
side.
- Turn the large screw counter-clockwise.
- Carefully remove the bass box.
Installing bass box
-Carefully place the bass box in the wheel. The inscription
"FRONT" on the bass box must face forward.
- Reconnect the connector that was removed.
- Secure the bass box with the large screw. •
