• Do not attach any st ickers to the w indshield in front of the light
sensor*, as t his wou ld interfere with the au toma tic ope ra tion of the
headlights and the automat ic dimming of the ins ide mirror.
• Be aware that automatic dimming o f the ins ide mir ror can on ly
operate proper ly if the rear w indow sun b lin d* is retracted . •

Memor y setting for the out side mirrors*
When the seat position is saved in the memory, the posit ion of the
outside mirrors is saved at the same time~
page 87.
If the pos it io n of t he passe nger m irror is changed when the vehicle is
in reverse gear and the switch is in the ® position, this new tilted
posit ion w ill be a utoma tica lly saved to the remote key when the
vehicle is taken out of reverse gear . To save, the rotary knob for mirror
adjus tment mus t be in the ® position, the se lec to r l ever must be in
the P position and the ignition must be off . T hi s will now become the
stored setti ng when the vehicle is put in reve rse gear agai n.
Tilting the passenger 's side outside mirror (only
with seat memory)
Whe n you move the selector lever into
R (Reverse), the mir ror o n the
front passenger 's doo r (knob tur ned to® ~ fig . 71) will tilt s light ly
dow nward. This make is eas ier for you to see the curb when you are
backing into a parking space.
Th e m irro r returns to its in it ial posi tion as soon as rever se gear is
disengaged and veh icle speed is above about 9 mph (15 km/h) . T he
mirror also returns to i ts initia l position i f the swit ch is moved to the
dr iver 's outs ide mirror © or the ign it ion is switched off .
Automatic anti-glare for the out side mirror s*
The outside mirrors dim at the same time as the inside m irror. When
t he ign ition is sw itched on, the mir rors automatic ally dim depending
on the amount of light str ik ing the m irrors (such as headlights
shining into the veh icle from t he rear) .
When you t urn on the interio r light, or when you move the selector
lever into R (Reve rse), the anti -glare f unction stops and the mirrors
return to their orig inal condition (not darkened) . -.,

Remember that vehicles or other objects will ap pear smaller and
f art her away th an whe n seen in a fla t mi rror. If you use th is mi rro r to
estimate distances of follow ing ve hicles when chang ing lanes, you
could estimate i nco rre ct ly and ca u se an a cci dent .
• If the mir ror ho using is moved un inte ntionally (for examp le, whi le

• If you take the vehicle to an automatic car wash, yo u m ust fo ld the

If th ere should be a malfu nction in the ele ct rical sys tem , you can still
adjust the outs ide mirrors by pressing the edge of the m irror. •

Automatic dimming for outside mirrors
Th e ou tside mir rors are d immed toge ther w it h t he a utoma tic
dimming of the ins ide mirror . When the ignition is switched on, t he
m irrors da rken a utomat ically depe nd ing on the light s trik ing t hem
(e .g . headlights from the r ea r) .
W hen the interio r light ing is switched on and when reverse gear is
engaged , the m irrors are sw itche d back to their or ig inal bright ness
(not d immed).
& WARNING
Broken glass of automatic dimming mirror can cause electrolyte
fluid leakage. Electrolyte fluid can irritate skin, eyes, and respira­
tory system.
• Repeated or prolonged exposure to electrolyte can cause irrita­
tion to the respiratory system, especially among people with
asthma or other respiratory conditions. Get fresh air immediately
by leaving the vehicle or, if that is not possible, open windows and
doors all the way.
• If electrolyte gets into the eyes, flush them thoroughly with
large amounts of clean water for at least 15 minutes; medical
attention is recommended.
• If electrolyte contacts skin, flush affected area with clean
water for at least 15 minutes and then wash affected area with
soap and water; medical attention is recommended. Thoroughly
wash affected clothing and shoes before reuse.
• If swallowed and person is conscious, rinse mouth with water
for at least 15 minutes. Do not induce vomiting unless instructed
to do so by medical professional. Get medical attention immedi­
ately.

Activating or deactivating the compass
The direction is displayed on the interior rear view mirror.

the red display appears or disappears .
The digital compass only works with the ignition turned on. The direc­
tions are displayed as initials:
N (North), NE (Northeast), E (East), SE
(Southeast), S (South) , SW (Southwest), W (West), NW (Northwest).

Calibrating the compass
The compass has to be recalibrated if the display is wrong
or inaccurate .
-Hold the@ button down until the letter C is displayed on
the interior rear view mirror .
- Drive in a circle at a speed of about 5 mph (10 km/h) until
a direction is shown on the interior rear view mirror.
& WARNING
The digital compass is to be used as a directional aid only. Even
though you may want to look at it while you are driving, you must
still pay attention to traffic, road and weather conditions as well
as other possible hazards. •

• Side assist cannot detect all vehicles under all condition s­

• Side a ssist cannot detect vehicle s in time to alert you when
they approach from behind at very high speed , or fall drop bac;k
very quickly .
• The radar sensor's
vision can be reduced o r entirely blocked by
rain, snow, and heavy spray . Thi s can result in side a ssist not
adequately detecting vehicles o r, in some cases , not detecting
them at all. Always keep an eye on the direction you are traveling
and the relevant area around the vehicle.
• Plea se note that side assi st indi cates there are approaching
veh icles, or vehicles in your blind spot, only after your vehicle has
reached a driving speed of at lea st 19 mph (30 km/h).
• Side assist signal does not work around tight corners (turning

a fixed lane w idt h. Detection in the left and right lanes is based on

T here are two different park assist systems ava ilab le depending on
your veh icle's equipment leve l.
The
r ear park ass ist is an acoust ic park assist system that will give you
a sou nd warn ing to let you know the re is something
behind t h e

T he parking system advanced audibly and visually te lls you there is
something
in front of a nd behind the vehicle. A rearv iew camera also
shows you what is behind the vehicle. This image helps you when
para lle l par king or reverse parking=>

Rear park assist
Applies to vehicles: with rear park assist
Description
The rear park assist is an audible system.
Sensors are located in the rear bumpers. If these detect an obstacle,
audib le signa ls warn you . The ra nge at wh ic h the sensors begin to
measure is approximate ly:

The close r you get to the obstacle, t he shorte r the interval between
the audible s ignals. A continuous tone sounds when the obstacle is
less than approximate ly 1 foot (0.30 meters) away. Do not continue
dr iving farther .
If the dis tance to an obstacle remains constant, the volume of the
distance warning gradually drops after about four seconds (this does
no t app ly in the co ntin uous tone range).
Th e pa rk assist is act ivated automat ically when reve rse gear is
engaged. A short confirmation tone sounds.
& WARNING
• The pa rking system cannot repla ce the dri ve r's attention . The
driver alone i s re sponsible for parking and similar driv ing man eu­
v ers.
• Sen sor s have blind spots in which objects cannot be detected .
Pay special attention to small children and animal s becau se the
s ensors cannot alwa ys detect them .
• Always keep your e yes on the vehicle' s surrounding s, using the
rear view mirror as w ell.

Low obstacles a lready s ignaled by a warning can disappea r from the
system's detection range as they are approached and will not
cont inue to be s ignaled . Objects such as bar rier chai ns, trai ler draw
bars, thin pa inted vertical po les or fences may not be detected by the
system , posing risk of damage .

Rear view camer a coverage area
The MMI display shows the area covered by the rear v iew camera
=> page 169, fig . 168 (D. Objects that are not in the area covered@
are not shown on the M MI display.
We recommend that you practice parking with the rear v iew camera
in a traff ic -free location o r parki ng lo t to become fam iliar wi th t he
system, the orientation lines, and the ir funct ion . When do ing th is,
there should be good lig ht and weather cond itions.
In the MM I disp lay, objects o r vehicles appea r closer or fu rther away
if:
• you are dr iv ing in r everse gea r from a level surface onto an incline,
or a downwa rd slope,
• you a re driving i n reve rse gear toward p rot ruding objec ts,
• the vehicle is carry ing too much load in the rear.
T he accur acy of the or ien tat io n lines and blue su rf a ces dimin ishes if:
• the Adaptive Air Suspens ion* is faulty or the dynamic, offroad or
lift mode is on,
• the rear view camera does not prov ide a reliable image, for
example, in poor visib ility conditions or if the lens is dirty,
• the image on the screen is not visible due to sun g lare and ref lec­
ti on .
Caring for the rear view camera lens
The rear view came ra is lo cated above the rea r license plate bracke t.
For the parking system to ope rate, the lens=>

must be kept clean: •
Dampen the lens with a househo ld alcoho l-based glass cleaner,
and then wipe the lens clean with a dry cloth =>
CD.
• Remove snow with a hand brush and ice preferably with a de-ic ing
spray =>
CD.

• The parking sy stem cannot replace the dri ver's attention . The
d river alone i s respo nsible for p arking and sim ila r dri ving maneu­
ver s.
• Sensor s hav e blind spots in which objects cannot be detected.

deale rship.

Parking next to ob stacles
When there is an obstacle (such as a wall) next to the parking spot,
choose a spo t w it h more space on the sides. Position t he long side of
the blue area so that there is sufficient space from the curb. The area
must not be on the curb. You will also need to star t turning the
steer ing wheel much earlier. There should be a suff icie nt amount of
space between the c urb and the b lue c urve, and t he b lue c urve
=> page 173, fig . 175 must not touch the curb .
& WARNING
• The rear view camer a does not show the entire area beh ind the
vehicle =>
page 169, fig. 168 . Watch out e specially for small chil­
dr en and animals. The rear view camera cannot always detect
them, p osing ri sk of an ac cident!
• Please note that object s not touching the g round can appear to
be further away than th ey r eally are (for example, the bumper of
a parked vehicle, a trailer hitch, or th e rear of a t ruck) . In this case,
you should not us e the help line s to h elp with parking , which
po se s danger of an accid ent !

In the MMI display, the direct io n of travel of the vehicle rea r is rep re ­
sented depending on the steering wheel angle . The vehicle front sw
ings out more than the vehicle rear . Maintain plenty of d istance so
t ha t your ou tside mirror or a corner of your vehicle does no t collide
w ith any obstacles . This can damage to you r vehicle.
