When the 1111 symbol illuminates, you can al­
ter your driving style to assist the fi lter self­
cleaning process. Drive for approx imately 15
minutes with the selector lever in the S pos i­
tion at a minimum speed of 37 mph (60 km/ h) and an engine speed of approx imately
2,000 RPM . The temperature i ncrease that
will result from th is can burn off the soot in
the filter. The symbol w ill switch off when the
cleaning is successf ul. After a successful
cleaning, there is no need to br ing the car to
an authorized dealer or qualified workshop beca use this is part of normal vehicle opera­
tion .

system
Switching the windshield wipers on
The windshield wiper lever controls both the
windshield wipers and the washer system.

Acti vating rain sensor
~ Move the lever up to posit ion (!) .
~ Move switch @up or dow n to ad just the
sensitivity of the rain sensor.

One-touch wiping
~ Move the lever to position @ , when you
want to wipe the windshield
briefly .
Automat ic wiper /wa sher

~ Release the Lever . The washer stops and the
w ipers keep go ing for about four seconds.
Depending on how long the Lever is held ,
different numbers of wash cycles are per­
formed .

64 Clear vis ion
General information
The winds hield wipers and the w indshield
washer system operate only with the ignition
on.
During a temporary stop , e.g . at a t raff ic sig­
na l, the set wipe speed is automatically re­
duced by one stage.
The winds hield washer no zzles a re heated at
l ow temperatures when the ignition is on .
Removing w ate r droplet s
About 5 seconds after the wash cycle is com­
plete, the wiper system performs a single au ­
tomatic wipe cycle to remove any water drop­
l ets that remain on the windshield whi le dr iv ­
ing.
If you would like to deactivate this delayed
wipe cycle wh ile driving, you have to pull the
l eve r to pos ition ® again within 10 seconds
after this wipe cy cle.
Water droplet removal is reactivated after the
ignit ion is switched off and then on again .
Winter position
To speed up de -icing of the w indshield w ipers,
t hey move to the winter posi tion when the ig­
n ition is switched off and at an outside tem­
perature below 39
°F (4 °(). In this posit ion ,
the w indshield wipers are in an area on the
g lass w hich is reached by the a ir vents below
the glass. It is also easier to remove snow and
ice from the wi ndshield wipers in this posi­
tion .
The wipe rs leave the w inte r position, when
the ign ition is swi tc h ed on, if the winds hield
wiper lever is operated or the active rain sen­
sor reacts to moistu re.
Rain sensor
The rain senso r operates on ly in the inte rva l
wiper position . When it sta rts to ra in , the in­
terval wipe r mode is activated automati ca lly.
If the windshie ld w iper lever is in the inte rval
wipe posit ion w ith the ign ition switched off, the ra
in sensor is not activated until ve hicle
sp eed is above 4 mph (6 km/h).
T o red uce the sensi tivi ty of the rain senso r,
the switch @ mus t be moved down . T o in­
crease the sensitivity of the rain sensor, the
switch must be moved up.
T he higher the sensit iv ity se tt ing , the sooner
the windshie ld wipers react to moist ure on
the windshie ld . I nc reased sensitivity is sig­
naled by the windshie ld wipers making a sin­
gle pass over the windshield.
T he rain sensor w iper intervals depend on the
sensitivity setting as well as vehicle speed.
D uring brief stops, wiper motio n will adj ust in
relat ion to the amount o f rain on the w ind­
shield .
A WARNING
-W iper blades are crucial for safe driving!
O nl y when they are i n good co ndit io n are
they able to clear the windows prope rly
to p rov ide uncompromised vis ib ility.

- T he rain sen so r is only designed to assist
a nd suppor t the driver.
It rem ains enti re­
ly the d river 's responsibility to monitor
outside weathe r conditions and to man­
ually activate the wipe rs as soon as rain
or driz zle reduces visibility through the
windshie ld.

In freezing or near freezing conditions:
- Always check that the w iper b lades are
not frozen to the g lass before you turn
the wipe rs on . Loosen a wiper blade
wh ich is frozen in place before operating
the wipers to prevent damage to the
w iper blade or the wiper motor.
- Do not use the w ipers to clear a frosted
w indow. Us ing the wipers as a conven­
ient ice scrape r will destroy the wiper
blades .

-Prior to using a car wash, the windshield
wiper system must be switched
off (lever
in position 0). This helps to prevent unin­
tentional switching on and damage to
the windshield wiper system .
@ Tips
-The windshield wipers are switched off
when the ignition is turned off. Activate
the windshield wipers after the ignition is switched back on by moving the wind­
shield wiper lever to any position.
- Worn or dirty windshield wiper blades
cause smearing which can affect the op­
eration of the rain sensor. Check the con­
dition of your windshield wiper blades
regularly.
- The rain sensor is part of the interval
wiping system. Turning
off the ignition
will also deactivate the rain sensor. To re­
activate the sensor, switch
off the inter­
val wiping function, then switch it back
on again.
- Make sure the washer fluid reservoir in
the engine compartment is topped
off
before going on a long trip. Look up
c:;, page 272 for checking and filling the
washer container.
Rear window wiper
The wiper lever is also used to operate the
rear window wiper and the automatic wiper/
washer function.

The rear window wiper and the automatic wip­
er/washer functions are activated as follows:

Intermittent wiping
.,. Push the wiper lever forward to the first po­
sition @

Automatic wiper/washer function
.,. Push the wiper lever forward to the second
stop,
position (J) , and hold it there for as
long as you want the rear wiper/washer to
operate.
.,. Release the lever again . the wiper will keep
running for approx. four seconds.
Switching intermittent wiper action off
.,. Pull the lever all the way back to the original
position.
As soon as the reverse gear is engaged and
the front wipers are turned on and operating
at the same time, the rear wiper also turns on
automatically.
A WARNING
Wiper blades are crucial for safe driving!
Only in good condition are they able to
clear the windows properly to provide un­ restricted visibility. Worn or frayed wiper
blades are a safety hazard!

The headlight washer system cleans the
headlights .

ger than one second .
The washer jets extend forward out of the
front bumper driven by water pressure to
spray the front headlights with water .
You shou ld inspect the headlights regularly
(for example when refueling) and clean off
any solid dirt or insects from the lenses .
To ensure the system works proper ly in winter,
keep the washer jets free of snow and remove
any ice using a de- ic ing spray.
Service position
The wiper blades can only be changed in the
service position.

wiper b lades once or twice a year. See your
authorized Audi dealer for replacement b lades.

m atic car washes affe ct the clea na bility of
the w indshield.

When you are driving at higher speeds wit h
the windshield wipers on, the brake pads will briefly touch the brake d iscs in regular inter­
vals so as to improve reaction t ime when brak­
ing on wet surfaces. You, the driver, will not
notice anything .
The effectiveness of the brakes can be reduced
when the vehicle is driven on a salt-covered
road and the brakes are not used . Here too,
you should clean
off accumulated salt coat ing
from brake discs and pads with a few careful
applications of the brake ¢ & .
Cor ro sion
There may be a tendency for dirt to build up
on the brake pads and corrosion to form on
the discs if the car is not dr iven regularly or
only for sho rt trips with little use of the
b rakes .
If the brakes are not used frequently, or if cor­ rosion has formed on the discs, it is advisable
to clean
off the pads and discs by b rak ing
fi rm ly a few times from a mode rately h igh
speed ¢.& .
Faults in the brake system
If you should notice a sudden increase in
brake peda l travel, t hen one of the two brake
circu its may have failed¢& .
Low brake flu id le vel
Malfunct ions can occur in the brake system if
the brake fl uid level is too low . T he brake fluid
level is monitored electronically .
Brake booste r
The brake booster increases the pressure t hat
you generate w ith the bra ke pedal. It on ly op­
erates while the eng ine is running¢ &.
Brake lining wear statu s
Brake lining wea r may be c hecked by vis ual in­
spection of the condition of the brake pads
through the openings in the whee l. If neces ­
sary, the whee l may be removed for this in­
spection ¢

A WARNING
-You should perform braking maneuvers
for the purpose of cleaning the brake
system only if road conditions permit.
Othe r road use rs must not be put at risk -
you may ca use an accident!
- Before descend ing a steep grade, reduce
speed a nd s hift transmission into a lower
gea r o r l ower dr iving range. Do not ride
the br akes or ho ld t he pedal down too
long o r too often. This could cause the
brakes to get hot and diminish braking
efficiency .
- Do not " ride the brakes" by rest ing you r
foot on the pedal when you do not intend
to brake. This may ca use the brakes to
overheat, premature wear and increased
stopping distance .
- Under certain cl imatic and ope rat ing
conditions such as passing thro ugh wa­
ter , dr iv ing in heavy rain o r after washing
the vehicle , the effectiveness of the
brakes can be reduced . In winte r, ice can
accumu late on the bra ke pads, lin ings,
d iscs a nd drum s. Carefu lly app ly bra ke s
for a test. Brakes w ill dry and ice co at­
ings w ill be cleaned
off after a few care­
fu l brake applicat ions.
- Driving for an exten ded period o f time o n
salt -cove red roads without using your
brakes can a lso affect braking efficiency .
C lean

- I f you damage the front spoiler, o r if you
install a different spoiler, be sure the air
f low to the front brakes is not obstruct­
ed. Otherw ise the brak e system could

cleaning
General information
Regular, proper care helps to maintain your
vehicle 's value. It can also be a requirement
when subm itting warranty claims for corro ­
sion damage and paint defects on the body .
The required cleaning and care products can be obtained from your authorized Audi dealer
or a qualified workshop. Read and follow the
instructions for use on the packaging .

- Preferably use environmentally-friendly
products when buying cleaning agents .

Car washes
-
The longer that depos its such as insects, bird
droppings , tree sap o r road salt rema in on the
ve hicle, the more the surface can be dam­
aged. High tempera tures such as those
caused by s unligh t increase the corrosive ef­
fect.
B efore washing, wet heavy deposits w ith p le n­
ty of water.
A lso, wash the underside of your vehicle once
road salt stops be ing used fo r the season .
Pressure wa sher s
When washing your vehicles w ith a pressure
washer, always follow the operating instruc­
tions provided w ith the pressure washer. Th is
is especially important in rega rd to the pres ­
sure and spray ing distance . Do not aim the
spray d irectly at seals o n side w indows, doors, the hood, the
rear lid o r the sunroof * or at
tires, rubber hoses, insu lating material, sen­
sors * or camera lenses* . Keep a d istance of at
l east 16 inches (40 cm).
Do not remove snow and ice with a pressu re
washer .
Never use rota ry no zzles or high pressure noz­
z les.
T he water temperature must not be above
140
°F (60 °() .
Automatic car washes
Spray off the ve hicle before washing.
Make sure that the windows and roof * are
closed and the winds hield wipers are off . Fo l­
l ow instructions from the car wash operator,
especially if there are accessories attached to
your vehicle.
If possible, use car washes that do not have
brushes .
Washing by hand
Clean the ve hicl e starting from the top and
working down using a soft sponge or cleaning
brush . Use solvent-free cleaning products.
Washing vehicles with matte finish paint
by hand
T o avoid damaging the paint when washing,
first remove dust and la rge particles from
your vehicle. Insects, grease spots and finger­
prints are best removed with a special cleaner
for matte finish paint .
Apply the prod uct us ing a microfiber cloth . To
avo id damaging the pa int surface, do not use
too much pressure.
Rinse the vehicle thoro ughly with water . Then
clean usi ng a neutral shampoo and a soft mi­
crof iber cloth.
Rinse the vehi cle thoroughly again and le t it
air dry . Remove any water residue using a
shammy.
Stubborn deposits su ch as b ir d droppi ngs o r
t ree sap are best remove d with p lenty o f wa -
ter and a microfiber cloth . ..,.

Closing the engine hood
"' Pull the hood down until the pressure from
the stru ts is reduced.
"' Let the hood
drop down and latch in p lace.
Do not try to push it shut ; it may fail to en­

A hood that is not completely latched
could fly up and b lock your view while dr iv­
i n g.
- When you close the engine hood, check it
to make sure the safety catch has p roper­
ly engaged . The hood shou ld be flush
with the surround ing vehicle body parts.
- If you notice while driv ing that the hood
is not secured prope rly, stop at once and
close it .
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in
the engine compartment.
Whene ver you must perform any wo rk in the
eng ine compartment, for e xample checking
and filling different fluids, there is a risk of injury, burns and accidents. To pr event per­
