—Theinflatingairbagwillhitthechildsafety
seatorinfantcarrierwithgreatforceand
willsmashthe childsafetyseatandchild
againstthebackrest,centerarmrest,door,

—Alwaysinstallrearward-facingchildre-
straintsontherearseat.
—Ifyoumustinstallarearwardfacingchild
safetyseatonthefrontpassengerseatbe-

—Alwaysmakesuretheforward-facingseat
hasbeendesignedandcertifiedbyitsmanu-
facturerforuseonafrontseatwithapas-
sengerfrontandsideairbag.

—Neverputtheforward-facingchildrestraint
upagainstorverynear theinstrumentpan-
el
—Alwaysmovethefrontpassengerseattothe
highestpositionintheupanddownadjust-
mentrangeandmoveitbacktotherear-
mostpositionintheseat'sforeandaftad-
justmentrange,asfarawayfromtheairbag
aspossible,beforeinstallingtheforward-
facingchildrestraint.
—Alwaysmakesurethatthesafetybeltupper
anchorageisbehindthechildrestraintand
notnexttoorinfrontofthechildrestraint
so thatthesafetybeltwillbeproperlyposi-
tioned.
—Alwaysmakesurethatthereisnothingon
thefrontpassengerseatthatwillcausethe
capacitivepassengerdetectionsystemin
theseattosignaltotheAirbagSystemthat
theseatisoccupiedbyapersonwhenitis
not,ortosignalthatitisoccupiedbysome-
onewhoisheavierthanthepersonactually
sittingontheseat.Thepresenceofaddi-
tionalobjectscouldcausethepassenger
frontairbagtobeturnedonwhenitshould
beoff,orcouldcausetheairbagtoworkina
waythatisdifferentfromthewayitwould
haveworkedwithouttheobjectontheseat.
—MakesurethatthePASSENGERAIRBAG
OFF$¥;lightcomesonandstaysonallthe
timewhenevertheignitionisswitchedon.

Thefrontpassengerseatinyourvehiclehasalot
ofveryimportantparts oftheAdvancedAirbag
Systeminit.Theseparts includethecapacitive
passengerdetectionsystem,wiring,brackets,
andmore.Thecontrolunitmonitorsthesystem
onthefrontpassengerseatwhentheignitionis
switchedonandturnstheairbagindicatorlight
onwhenamalfunctionintheoneofthesystem
componentsisdetected>page280.Becausethe
front
passengerseatcontainsimportantpartsof
theAdvancedAirbagSystem,youmusttakecare
topreventitfrombeingdamaged.Damageto

seatorinfantcarrierwithgreatforceand
willsmashthechildsafetyseatandchild
againstthebackrest,centerarmrest,door

—Neverholdthingsinyourhandsoronyour
lapwhenthevehicleisinuse.
—Nevertransportitemsonorintheareaof
thefrontpassengerseat.Objectscould
moveintotheareaofthefrontairbagsdur-
ingbrakingorothersuddenmaneuversand
becomedangerousprojectilesthatcan
causeseriouspersonalinjuryiftheairbags
inflate.
—Neverplaceorattachaccessoriesorother
objects(suchascupholders,telephone
brackets,large,heavyorbulkyobjects)on
thedoors,overornear theareamarked
“AIRBAG”onthesteeringwheel,instrument
panel,seatbackrestsorbetweenthose
areasandyourself.Theseobjectscould
causeinjuryinacrash,especiallywhenthe
airbagsinflate.
—Neverreclinethefrontpassenger'sseatto
transportobjects.Itemscanalsomoveinto
theareaofthesideairbagorthefrontair-
bagduringbrakingorinasuddenmaneuver.
Objectsnear theairbagscanbecomeprojec-
tilesandcauseinjury,particularlywhenthe
seatisreclined.
—Neverplaceortransportobjectsonthefront
passengerseat.Objectsonthefrontpassen-
gerseatcouldcausethecapacitivesensorin
theseattosignaltoairbagsystemthatthe
seatisoccupiedbyapersonwhenitinfactis
not,orthatthepersonontheseatisheavier
thanheorsheactuallyis.Thechangein
electriccapacitancebecauseofsuchobjects
cancausethepassengerfrontairbagtobe
turnedonwhenitshouldbeoff,orcan
causetheairbagtoworkinawaythatisdif-
ferentfromthewayitwouldhaveworked
withoutobjectsontheseat.
—Alwaysmakesurethatthereisnothingon
thefrontpassengerseatthatwillcausethe
capacitivepassengerdetectionsystemin
theseattosignaltotheAirbagSystemthat
theseatisoccupiedbyapersonwhenitis
not,ortosignalthatitisoccupiedbysome-
onewhoisheavierthanthepersonactually
sittingontheseat.Thepresenceofanob-
jectcouldcausethepassengerfrontairbag
tobeturnedonwhenitshouldbeoff,or
couldcausetheairbagtoworkinawaythat
isdifferentfromthewayitwouldhave
workedwithouttheobjectontheseat.

Thefinedustcreatedwhenairbagsdeploycan
causebreathingproblemsforpeoplewitha
historyofasthmaorotherbreathingcondi-

—Toreducetheriskofbreathingproblems,

gettingoutofthevehicleoropeningwin-

Changingthevehicle'ssuspensionsystemcan
changethewaythattheAdvancedAirbagSystem
performsinacrash.Forexample,usingtire-rim
combinationsnotapprovedbyAudi,loweringthe
vehicle,changingthestiffnessofthesuspension,
includingthesprings,suspensionstruts,shock
absorbersetc.canchangetheforcesthatare
measuredbytheairbagsensorsandsenttothe
electroniccontrolunit.Somesuspensionchanges
can,forexample,increasetheforcelevelsmeas-
uredbythesensorsandmaketheairbagsystem
deployincrashesinwhichitwouldnotdeployif
thechangeshadnotbeenmade.Otherkindsof
changesmayreducetheforcelevelsmeasuredby
thesensorsandpreventtheairbagfromdeploy-
ingwhenitshould.

sincethecircumstanceswillvaryconsiderablybe-
tweenonecollisionandanother.Importantfac-

—Neverattachobjectstothecoverorinthe
deploymentzoneofasidecurtainairbag.
— Theairbagdeploymentzonesmustbekept
clearatalltimes.Makesuretherearenoob-
jects,pets,orotherpersonsinthespacebe-
tweenanyvehicleoccupantand anyairbag
atanytime.
—Donotattachanyaccessoriestothedoors.

Beforeyoucarryachildinarear-facingchild
safetyseatontherearseat,removethe
Rear Seat
Entertainment(RSE)*andits
holder*fromthebackrest ofthefrontseat.
Makesurethereisenoughspaceinfrontof

justtheangleandpositionoftheseatin
