Correcting window regulator
malfunction
After disconnecting the vehicle battery, the
one-touch up and down feature must be acti­vated again.
• Pull and ho ld the power window switch until
the window is completely closed.
• Release the sw itch and pull the switch again
for one second.
Valet parking
App lies to vehicles: wit h va le t parking function
The valet parking feature protects the lug­
gage compartment from unauthorized ac­
cess.

You can switch the "valet parking function" on

When the funct io n is switched on, the veh icle

Automatic power top
General information
The sophisticated design of the fabric power
top allows you to operate it easily and quickly.
You can open and close the power top while
driving as long as the vehicle is traveling be­
low 30 mph. When open, the power top is
stored in a special compartment which is
equipped with a cover.
Under normal conditions, the power top is
wind- and waterproof . In rare cases, small
droplets of water may form under extreme
weather conditions such as torrential or pro­ longed rain. That is normal and no cause for
concern.
F ollow the maintenance instructions to main­
tain the attractive appearance of the converti­ ble and to ensure that it does not leak
<=> page 192, Power top care. Also observe
the following:
- Only open and close the power top when it is
clean. Sharp-edged particles of dirt can
scratch the rear window when the power top
is folded and can cause abrasion that result
in damage to the power top over time. You
should also remove ice and snow before
opening the power top.
- Never remove snow and ice with sharp­
edged objects. You can remove ice from the
rear window w ith a standard ice scraper .
- You should on ly open the power top when it
is completely dry. Opening the power top
and stowing it in the compartment when it
is wet can cause marks on the top that de­
tract from its appearance. Mildew can also
form if the power top is stowed for an ex ­
tended period of time when it is wet.
- Do not leave the power top open for several
weeks at a time. Always close it between
uses to prevent discoloration and creases
from forming. This is especially important if
it was not completely dry when stowed.
- Opening or closing the power top in temper­
atures below 32 °F
(0 °() is not recommend- ed because the flexibility of the fabric
de­
creases is sub-zero temperatures .
A WARNING
--When operating the power top, make
sure the function is not affected by wind
or other factors and that it does not in­
terfere w ith other dr ivers.
- Never drive when the power top is not
locked correctly. The wind from driving
could cause the power top to open . This
can result in injuries and damage to the
veh icle.
- When opening and closing the power
top, make sure no one will be injured by
the supports and other moving parts.
- Operating the power top reduces the
headroom in the rear of the vehicle.
Make sure there is enough clearance be­
tween the rear passenger and the power
top when opening and closing it.

-When operat ing the power top, visibility
to the rear is limited . Avo id operat ing the
top while driving in reverse.

is not damaged when opening and clos­
ing it.
- Do not store any objects in the power top
compartment to avoid damage when
opening the top.

- To prevent the battery from discharg ing,
do not open or close the power top re­
peated ly when the engine is switched
off.

correct the cause of the mal function as
soon as possible.
- If park ing the veh icle w ith the power top
open, remember that the ve hicle interior
will not be protected from the weather
or from unauthorized entry. Closing the
power top before leaving the vehicle is
r ecommended. If you leave items in the
vehicle, lock them in the trunk .
"' Power top operation
The indicator light monitors the power top.
The l'JI indicator light illuminates for approxi­
mate ly 2 seconds when the ignit ion sw itches
on to check the function and then goes out
again . T he indicator light also:
- illuminates when the power top opens or
closes.
- blinks if the power top switch is operated
but the conditions for opening or closing the
power top are not met. A warning message
also appears in the instrument cluster dis­
play

-if the power top d id not open or close com­
pletely.

An error message appears if the power top
cannot open or close .
Several conditions must be met for the power
top to open or close automat ically .

met or there is a malfunct ion.
Power top: please close rear lid
The luggage compartment lid must be closed
when the power top is opening or closing . This
error message appears in the instrument cl us-

ter display if the luggage compa rtment lid is
not closed .
Storage bay not lowered. Please remove
obstruction
The power top sto rage bay must lower when
the power top is opening . This error message
appears in the instrument cluster display if
the storage bay is not lowered. If the storage
bay does not lower automat ically because of
objects in the luggage compartment, remove
the objects that are in the way from the stor­
age bay area . Otherwise, you can operate the
power top storage bay manually

Power top : cannot be used
This error message appears if the convertible
cannot open or close automatically because of
safety reasons or if there is a malfunct ion . The
follow ing causes are possible:
- Vehicle speed too high: Power top opera­
tion is deactivated and an error message ap­
pears if the veh icle speed is too high. Re­
duce the vehicle speed and ope rate the
sw itch again to open or close the powe r top.
- Battery voltage too low: The power top can­
not be ope rated if the battery voltage is too
low. This ens ures the re will be enough bat­
t ery vol tage le ft to sta rt the vehicle. The
power top can be operated again after the
eng ine is started .
-Rollover protection active: If the power top
is operated continuously for an extended pe ­
riod of time, rollover protection will activate
to prevent damage to the hydra ulic unit.
This protective funct ion prevents the power
top from opening or close for approx imately
15 to 30 minutes. It w ill function again af ­
ter that

-Malfunction: Failure of system components
is one possib le cause for malfunction . If this
happens, you can a lso ope rate the powe r
top by hand

Power top not secure
This message appears with a warning tone if
the power top is not

Selector lever emergency release
If the vehicle's power supply fails, the s elec­
tor lever can be released in an emergency.

tion is switched on. If the power supply fails

the vehicle must be pushed or towed, move

Activating and deactivating

side assist is switched on.
Adjusting the display brightness
Applies to vehicles: with Audi side assist
The signal brightness can be set in the radio
orMMI* .
.. Select : ICARI function button> Audi side as­
sist.

control button > Driver assist > Audi side
assist.
The display brightness adjusts automatically
to the brightness of the surroundings, both in
the information and in the warning stage. In
very dark or very bright surroundings, the dis­ play is already set to the minimum or maxi ­
mum level by the automatic adjustment. In
Audi side assist 103
such cases, you may notice no change when
adjusting the br ightness, or the change may
only be noticeable once the surroundings
change.
Adjust the brightness to a level where the dis­
play in the information stage will not disrupt
your view forward. If you change the bright­
ness, the display in the exterior mirror will
briefly show the brightness level in the infor­
mation stage. The brightness of the warning
stage is linked to the brightness in the infor­
mation stage and is adjusted along with the
information stage adjustment.
(D Tips
- Side assist is not active while you are
making the adjustment.
- Your settings are automatically stored
and assigned to the remote control key
being used.
Driver messages
Applies to vehicles: wit h Aud i side ass ist
If side assist switches off by itself, the LED in
the button turns off and a message will ap­
pear in the instrument cluster display:
Audi side assist unavailable: Sensors blocked
The radar sensors' vision is affected . Do not
cover the area in front of the sensors with bike
wheels, stickers, dirt or other objects. Clean
the area in front of the sensors, if necessary
¢page 101, fig . 117.
Audi side assist: Currently unavailable
Side assist cannot be switched on temporarily
because there is a malfunction (for example,
the battery charge level may be too low) .
Audi side assist: System fault!
The system cannot guarantee that it will de­
tect vehicles correctly and it is switched off.
The sensors have been displaced or are faulty.
Have the system checked by an authorized
Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility
soon.

There are some important things you have to know to make sure that the effectiveness of
the system will not be impaired and that dis­
carded components do not cause injury or pol­
lute the environment.
A WARNING
Improper care, servicing and repair proce­
dures can increase the risk of personal in­
jury and death by preventing an airbag from deploying when needed or deploying an airbag unexpectedly:
- Never cover, obstruct, or change the
steering wheel horn pad or airbag cover
or the instrument panel or modify them
in any way.
- Never attach any objects such as cu­
pholders or telephone mountings to the
surfaces covering the airbag units.
- For cleaning the horn pad or instrument
panel, use only a soft, dry cloth or one
moistened with plain water. Solvents or
cleaners could damage the airbag cover
or change the stiffness or strength of the
material so that the airbag cannot de­
ploy and protect properly.
- Never repair, adjust, or change any parts
of the airbag system.
- All work on the steering wheel, instru­
ment panel, front seats or electrical sys­
tem (including the installation of audio
equipment, cellular telephones and CB
radios, etc.) must be performed by a
qualified technician who has the training
and special equipment necessary.
- For any work on the airbag system, we
strongly recommend that you see your
authorized Audi dealer or qualified work­
shop.
- Never modify the front bumper or parts
of the vehicle body.
- Always make sure that the side airbag
can inflate without interference:
- Never install seat covers or replace­
ment upholstery over the front seat­
backs that have not been specifically
approved by Audi.

-Never use additional seat cushions that
cover the areas where the side airbags
inflate.
- Damage to the original seat covers or
to the seam in the area of the side air­
bag module must always be repaired
immediately by an authorized Audi
dealer.
- The airbag system can be activated only
once. After an airbag has inflated, it
must be replaced by an authorized Audi
dealer or qualified technician who has
the technical information, training and
special equipment necessary.
- The airbag system can be deployed only
once. After an airbag has been deployed, it must be replaced with new replace­
ment parts designed and approved espe­
cially for your Audi model version. Re­ placement of complete airbag systems
or airbag components must be per­
formed by qualified workshops only.
Make sure that any airbag service action
is entered in your Audi Warranty
& Main­
tenance booklet under
AIRBAG REPLACE­
MENT RECORD.
- In accidents when an airbag is deployed,
the vehicle battery separates the alterna­
tor and the starter from the vehicle elec­
trical system for safety reasons with a
pyrotechnic circuit interrupter.
- Work on the pyrotechnic circuit inter­
rupter must only be performed by a
qualified dealer - risk of an accident!
- If the vehicle or the circuit interrupter
is scrapped, all applicable safety pre­
cautions must be followed.

Undeployed airbag modules and preten­
sioners might be classified as Perchlorate Material -special handling may apply, see

-On wet road surfaces , be careful not to
dr ive too fast because the front wheels
cou ld beg in to slide on top of the water
(aquaplaning). If this should occur, you
will have no warning from a sudden in­
c rease in engine speed as with a front­
wheel drive vehicle. A lways d rive at
s peeds w hich a re suited to the road con­
di tions -ris k of crash.
Energy management
Starting ability is optimized
Energy management controls the distribution
of electrical energy and thus optimi zes the
availabili ty of elec trical energy for s tarting
t he engine.
If a vehicle with a conventional energy system
is not driven for a long period of time, the bat­
te ry is d ischarged by idling current consumers
(e.g . immobilizer) . In certain ci rcumstances it
can result i n there bei ng ins ufficient ene rgy
ava ilab le to start th e engi ne .
Intell igen t energy management in y our veh i­
cle hand les the d istribution of electrical ener­
gy. Starting ab ility is markedly improved and
the life of the battery is extended .
Basically, energy management consists of
battery diagnos is , idling current manage­
ment
and dynamic en ergy management .
Battery diagnosis
Battery d iagnosis continuously determ ines
the state of the battery. Sensors determ ine
battery vo ltage, ba tte ry current and battery
temperature . This dete rm ines the current
state of charge and the powe r of the battery.
Idling current management
Idling current management reduces energy
consumption while the vehicle is stand ing.
W ith the igni tion switched off, it cont ro ls the
energy s upply to the va rious e lectr ica l compo ­
n ents . Data from battery diagnosis is consid­
e red. D
epend ing on the ba tte ry's state o f cha rge ,
indivi dual cons umers a re g radually turned off
to prevent excessive discharge of t he battery
and th us maintain starting capability.
Dynamic energy management
While the vehi cle is being d riven, dynami c en ­
ergy management distr ibutes the energy gen ­
erated accord ing to t he needs of the indivi du­
al components . It regulates consumption, so
t h at more electrical energy is not being used
t h an is be ing generated and ensures an opti­
mal state of charge fo r the battery .
(D Tips
-But even ene rgy management cannot
negate the limits of physics. Consider
t ha t the powe r and life of a battery are
limited.

What you should know
The highest priority is given to maintaining
starting capability.
The battery is severe ly taxed in short-d istance
driv ing, in city traff ic and during the cold time
of yea r. Ab undant electrical e nergy is re­
quired, but on ly a little is generated . It is also
c rit ical if th e engi ne is no t ru nning and e lectri­
ca l c ompone nts are t urned on . In this in ­
sta nce ene rgy is be ing consumed but none i s
being gene ra ted .
It is in prec isely these s ituations that you will
not ice ene rgy management a ct ive ly reg ulat­
in g t he di stribu tion of ene rgy.
Vehicle stands for an extended period
If you do not drive your vehicle over a period
of seve ral days or weeks , e lectr ica l compo­
n ents a re g radually cut bac k or sw itched off.
T h is reduces energy consump tion and ma in­
ta in s start ing c apabili ty over a longer pe riod .
Some of the convenience func tions may not
opera te, such as t he interio r lights or the
power seat adjustme nt. The convenience

functions will be available again when you
switch on the ignition and start the engine.
With the engine turned off
If you listen to the radio, for example, with
the eng ine turned off or use othe r MM I fu nc­
tions, the battery is being discha rged.
I f starting capability is jeopardized due to en­
e rgy consumpt ion, the fo llow ing warning ap­
pears in the MMI disp lay :
Plea se start the eng ine soon or th e sys tem
w ill b e turn ed off .
The warning ind icates that the system will be
turned off automatically after 3 m inutes . If
you wish to cont inue us ing the functions , you
have to start the engine.
With the engine running
Although electrical energy is generated when
the vehicle is be ing driven, the battery can be­
come discharged . Th is happens mostly when
little energy is be ing generated and a great
deal consumed and the battery's state of
charge is no t optimal.
To br ing the energy balance back into equili ­
b rium, consumers which require especially
l arge amounts of energy are tempo rarily cut
back or swit ched off. Heating systems in par­
ticular requ ire a g reat dea l o f energy. If you
notice, fo r example, that the heated seats* or
the heated rear window are not heating, they have been temporari ly cut back or switched
off. These systems will be ava ilab le again as
soon as the energy balance has been restored.
You will a lso notice that engine idle speed has
been increased slightly . This is norma l and not
a cause for concern . By increasing engine idle
speed the add itiona l energy required is gener­
ated and the battery is charged.

- To reduce the r isk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam
or coolant escaping from the engine
compartment . Wait until no steam or
coolant can be seen or heard before care­
fully opening the hood.
- Keep children away from the engine com­
partment.
- Never spill flu ids on hot engine compo­
nents . They can cause a fire.
- Never touch the radiator fan. The auxili­
ary electr ic fan is temperature controlled
and can switch on suddenly.
- Never open the coolant reservoir cap
when the eng ine is still warm . The cool­
ant system is pressur ized and hot coo l­
ant could spray out.
- Protect your face, hands and arm from
steam o r hot eng ine coolant by placing a
thi ck rag over the cap when you open the
coolant reservoir .
- Do not remove the engine cover under
any c ircumstances. Th is increases the
risk of burns.
- If wo rk on the fuel system or the electri­
c al system is necessa ry:
- Always disconnect the battery.
- Never smoke or work near heaters or
open flames . Fluids in the engine com­
pa rtment cou ld start a fire.
- Keep an approved fire extinguisher im­
mediately avai lable.
- To avoid electrical s hock and persona l in ­
jury while the engine is running or being
started, never touch:
- Ignition cables
- Othe r components of the high voltage
e lectronic ignition system.
- If you must perform a check or repa ir
with the engine running:
- First, fully apply the parking bra ke,
move se lector lever o f automat ic trans­
missio n to "P" (Park). -
Always use extreme caution to p revent
clothing, jewel ry, or long hair from get­
ting caught in the radiator fan, V-belts
or other moving parts, or from contact­ ing hot parts. Tie back hair before
starting, and do not wea r clothing that
will hang o r droop into t he engine.
- Mi nimize exposure to em ission and
chemical hazards~ &.
A WARNING

and certain vehicle components contain

- Battery posts, terminals and related ac­ cessories conta in lead and lead com ·
pounds, chemicals known to the State of
California to cause cancer and reproduc­
tive harms. Wash hands afte r handling .
(I) Note
When adding f lu ids, always make sure that
they are poured i nto the proper conta iner
or filler opening, otherwise serious dam­
age to vehicle systems w ill occur.
@) For the sake of the environment
To detect leaks in time, inspect the vehicle
floor pan from underneath regularly. If
you see spots from oil or other veh icle flu­
i ds, have yo ur vehicle inspected by a n au­
thor ized Audi dea ler.
