Evaluating times and continuing or
resetting timing
You can evaluate the fastest, slowest and aver­
age Lap times.

... To eva luate lap times, press and hold the
I RESET ! button c::;, page 2 7, fig. 14@for ap­
proximately 2 seconds. The number of laps
traveled, the fastest lap"+", the slowest lap"-"
and the average lap time "0" appears in the dis­
play .
... To continue timing for addit ional laps, press
the wiper sw itch @.
... To reset the timer to zero, press and hold the
I RESE T! button again for approximate ly 2 sec­
onds .
... To switch the lap timer off completely, press
the
I RESE T I button briefly.
(D Tips
-Saved lap t imes cannot be ind ividually de­
l eted from the total results.
- The saved lap timer values will not be lost
after turn ing the ignit ion off.
On Board Diagnostic
System (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) ¢.ij in the
instrument cluster is part of the On-Board Diag­
nostic (OBD II) system.
The warning/indicator light illuminates when the
ignit ion is switched on and goes out after the en­
g ine starts and the idle has stabilized. Th is ind i­
cates that the MIL is working properly.

If the light does not go out after the engine is
started, or i lluminates while you are driving, a
malfunction may exist in the eng ine system. If
the light illuminates, the catalytic converter
could be damaged .
Continue driving
with reduced power (avoiding
sustained high speeds and/or rapid accelerations)
and have the condition corrected. Contact your
authorized Audi dealer.
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate
c::;, page 185.
On-Board Diagnostics

On-Board Diagnostics monitors the components
of your emission control system. Each monitored component in your engine system has been as ­
signed a code. In case of a malfunction, the com­ ponent will be identified and the fault stored as a
code in the control module memory.
The MIL light may also illuminate if there is a
leak in the on-board fuel vapor recovery system.
If the l ight illuminates after a refueling, stop the
vehicle and make sure the fuel filler cap is prop­
erly closed
c::;, page 185.
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the stor­
ed data can only be displayed using special diag­
nostic equipment (generic scan tool for OBD).
In order to connect the specia l diagnostic equip­
ment, push the plug into the Data Link Connector
(DLC). The DLC is located to the right of the hood
release
c::;, fig . 17 .
Your authorized Audi dealer or qua lified work­
shop can interpret the code and perform the nec- essary repair . .,,_

-and the head restraints have been p roperly ad -
justed.
Because airbags inflate in the blink of an eye w ith
great force, things you have on yo ur lap o r have
p laced on the seat cou ld become dangerous p ro­
jectiles, and be pushed into yo u if the airbag in­
flates.
When an a irbag deploys, fine dust is released.
This is normal and is not caused by a fire in the
vehicle. This dust is made up mostly of a powder
used to lubricate the airbags as they dep loy. It
could irr itate skin.
It is important to remember that whi le the sup ­
p lemental airbag system is designed to reduce
the likelihood of serious in juries, other injur ies,
for example swell ing, bruising and minor abra­
sions, can also happen when a irbags inf late. Air­
bags do not protect the arms or the lower parts
of the body. Front airbags o nly supplement the
three point safety belts in some frontal col lisions
i n which the veh icle deceleration is high enough
to deploy the airbags.
F ront airbags will not deploy:
- if the ign it io n is switched off when a crash oc -
curs,
- in s ide collisions,
- in rear-end collisions,
- in ro llovers,
- when the crash deceleration measured by the airbag system is less than the minimum thresh ­
o ld needed for airbag deployment as registered
by the electronic control un it.
Th e front pa ssenger airbag will al so not
depl oy:
-when the front passenger seat is not occupied,
- when the weight on the front passenger seat as
sensed by the Advanced Airbag System indi­
cates that the front airbag on the passenger
s ide has to be turned off by the electronic con­
trol unit (the
PA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
comes on and stays on) .
A WARNING
Sitting in the wrong position can increase the
risk of se rious injury in crashes .
Airbag syste m
- To reduce the risk of injury when the airbags
inflate, the driver and passengers must al­
ways sit in an upright pos ition, must not
lean aga inst or place any part of the ir body
too close to the area where the a irbags are
located.
- Occupants who are unbelted, out of position
or too close to the airbag can be seriously
in ju red by an a irbag as it unfo lds with great
for ce in the blink of an eye

A WARNING
A child in a rearward-fac ing ch ild safety sea t
i nsta lled on the front passenger seat w ill be
se riously inju red and can be killed if the front
a irbag inflates - even with an Advanced Airbag
System .
- The inflating airbag will hit the child safety
seat o r infant carrier with great force and
will smash the child safety seat and child
aga inst the backrest, center armrest, door
or roof.
- Always install rear-fac ing ch ild safety seats
on the rear seat.
- If you must install a rearwa rd fac ing child
safety seat on the front passenger seat be­
cause of except ional circumstances and the
PASS ENG ER AIR BAG OFF light does not
come on and stay on, immediately install
the rear-facing child safety seat in a rear
seating posi tion and have the airbag system
inspected by your authori zed Audi dealer .
A WARNING
Objects between you and the airbag will in­
crease the risk of injury in a crash by interfe r­
ing with the way the airbag unfolds or by be ­
ing p ushed into you as the airbag inflates .
- Never hold things in yo ur hands or on your
lap when the vehicle is in use .
- Never transpo rt items on or in the a rea of
the front passenger seat. Objects could move into the area of the front airbags dur­
ing brak ing or other sudden maneuver and
become dangerous project iles that can
cause serious persona l injury if the a irbags
inflate.

Checking and Filling Hood
Releasing and opening the engine hood
The engine hood is released from inside the vehi­
cle.

Before opening the engine hood, make sure that
the windshield wipers are flat against the wind­
shield . Otherwise, they could damage the paint
on the hood.
.. With the driver's door open, pu ll the lever un­
der the instrument panel in the direction of the
arrow

.. Press the rocker switch under the hood upward

A WARNING
Hot engine coolant can burn you.
- To reduce the r isk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam or
coolant escaping from the engine compa rt­
ment. Wait until no steam or coolant can be

seen or heard before carefully opening the
hood .
Closing the engine hood
.. Pull the hood down until the pressure from the
struts is reduced.

drop down and latch in place. Do
not try to push it shut;
it may fa il to engage

A WARNING
A hood that is not comp letely latched could
fly up and block your view while driving.
- When you close the engine hood, check it to
make sure the safety catch has properly en­
gaged . The hood should be flush with the
surrounding vehicle body parts.
- If you notice while driv ing that the hood is
not secured properly, stop at once and close
it.
Working in the engine compartment
Be especially careful whenever you work in the
engine compartment.
-
Whenever you must perform any work in the
engine compartment, for example checking and
filling different fluids , there i s a risk of injury ,
burns and accidents. To prevent personal injury
always observe the following WARNINGS . The
engine compartment of any vehicle is a hazard­
ous area

A WARNING
-
To help avoid injury, before you check any-
thing under the hood:
- Turn off the engine.
- Remove the ignition key .
- Apply the parking brake.
- Move selector lever of automatic transmis-
sion to "P" (Park) .
-Always let the engine cool down. Hot com ­
ponents wi ll burn skin on contact .
- To reduce the risk of being burned, never
open the hood if you see or hear steam o r
coo lant escaping from the engine
