-Depending on vehicle equipment, the in ­
str ument ill umination (need les and gauges)
may tu rn on when the lights are off and the
i gnition is sw itched on. The illumination for
the gauges reduces automat ically and even­
tua lly turns off as brightness outside in­
creases. This function reminds the driver to
turn the low beams on at the app ropr iate
time.

ture, speed and othe r measureme nts in t he
Infotainment
system¢ page 241.
Coolant temperature indicator
The coolant temperatu re display (D ¢ page 10,
fig. 4 or ¢ page 10, fig . 3 only funct ions when
the ignition is switched on . To prevent engine
damage, please observe the following notes
about the temperature ranges.
Cold range
If onl y the L EDs at the bottom o f th e ga uge turn
on, the engine has not reached operating tem­ pe rature yet. Avoid high engine speeds, full ac ­
cele rat ing and heavy engine loads.
Normal range
The engine h as reached its oper ating temper a­
ture once the LEDs up to the center o f the ga uge
turn on. If
the . indicator lig ht in the instru-
~ ment cluster display turns on, the coolant tern-
~ perature is too high ¢ page 28 .

@ Note
-Auxi liary headlights and other accessories in
front of the coo ling-air intake impai r the
cooling effect of the coolant. This increases
the risk of the engine overheating dur ing
hig h outside temperatures and heavy en­
gine load .
-The front spoiler a lso helps to distribute
cooling air correctly while driving. If the
spoiler is damaged, the coo ling effect will
be impaired and the r is k of the eng ine ove r­
heating wi ll increase. See an autho rized

ci lity for assis tan ce .
-Vehicles without a coolant temperature dis­
play: to promote a long engine service li fe,
avoidin g high engine speeds, full accelera­
tion and heavy engine loads during approx i­
mately the first 15 minutes when the en ­
gine is cold is recommended. The amount of
time that the eng ine is cold depends on the
outside temperature .

A WARNING
The route calc ulated by the navigation system
is a recommendation for reaching your desti­
nation. Obey traffic lights, stopping restric­
tions, one-way streets, lane change restr ic­
tions, etc.

On Board Diagnostic
System (OBD)
Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL)
The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) ¢4 in the
in strument cluster is part of the On Board Diag­
n ostic System (080 II).
The indicator light turns on when the ign ition is
switched on and turns off once the engine is
started and is running in idle at a stab le speed.
This indicates that the MIL is functioning correct­
l y .
Cockpit overview
If the light does not turn off after starting the
engine
or turns on while driving, this may indi­
cate there is a malfunction in the engine.
If the
indicator turns on, the cata lytic converter may be
damaged .
Drive
with reduced engine performance (avoid
high speeds for extended periods of time and/or
fast acceleration) and have the malfunction cor­
rected . See an authorized Audi dealer or author­
ized Audi Service Facility.
The electronic speed limiter may be fau lty if the
indicator light turns on. For additional informa­
tion, see
Q page 23 .
The MIL may also turn on if the fuel filler cap is
not closed correctly

On-Board Diagnostics

On-Boa rd Diagnostics monitors the components
of your emission control system . Each monitored
component in your engine system has been as­
signed a code. In case of a malfunction, the com­ ponent will be identified and the fault stored as a
code in the control module memory .
The MIL light may also illuminate if there is a
leak in the on-board fuel vapor recovery system.
If the light illuminates after a refuelling, stop
the vehicle and make sure the fuel filler cap is properly closed
¢ page 314.
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the stor­
ed data can only be displayed using special diag­
nostic equipment (generic scan tool for 080) .
In order to connect the special diagnostic equip­
ment, push the plug into the Data Link
Connector .,.

necessary repair.
A WARNING
Do not use the diagnostic connector for per­
sonal use. Incorrect usage can cause malfunc­
tions, which can increase the risk of a colli­

Indicator Lights
Description
The indica to r lights in the inst rument cluste r
blink or t urn on. They indicate funct ions or ma l­
functions .

Messages may appea r wi th some indi cato r lights.

The indicator ligh ts and messages in the instru ­
ment cluster display can be covered by other dis­
p lays. Yo u can have these displayed again in the
drive r information system by opening the second
Veh icle tab (messages) using the
l <1 ~ I button on
the multifunction steering wheel. If there are
several malfunctions, you can d isplay them one
at a time us ing the thumbwhee l.
Some ind icator lights in the display can display in
several colors .

The brake booster remains active for a br ief peri­
od of time after switching off the ignition. To se­
cure the vehicle from ro lling away, move these­
lector lever in the P position or set the parking
brake.
A WARNING
- Read and follow the warnings in
¢ page 316, Working in the engine com­
partment
before open ing the hood and
check ing the b rake fl uid level.
- If the bra ke system indicator light does not
tu rn off o r it t urns on while driv ing, the
bra ke fluid level in the reservoir is too low ,
and this inc reases the risk of an acc iden t.
Stop the vehicle and do not continue dr iv ­
ing. See an authorized Audi dealer or au­
tho rized Audi Service Facility for ass istance .
- If the bra ke sys tem indicator light turns on
together with the ABS and ESC indicator
lights, the ABS/ESC regulating function may
be malfunctioning. Functions that stabilize
the vehicle are no longer ava ilable. This
could cause the rear of the ve hicle to
swerve, which increases the risk that the ve­ hicle will slide . Do not continue driving . See

E SC or ASR (Anti-S lip Reg ulation) is active ly reg u­

the: GJ indicator light turns on, the system has
sw itched the ESC off. In this case , you can switc h
the ign ition off and then o n to switch the ESC on
again. The indicator light turns off when the sys ­
tem is functioning fully .

speed displayed in the inst rument cl uste r. This
pro te cts the engine from ove rheating .

The engine speed limitation deactivates once the
engine is no longer in the critica l temperature
range and you have released the acce lerator ped ­
al once.
If the engine speed limitation was activated by
an engine contro l ma lfunction, the
II or Im in­
d icator light a lso t urns on . Make sure the eng ine
speed does not go above the speed displayed, for
examp le when downsh ift ing. Drive to an author­
ized A udi dealer or authorized Aud i Service Facili ­
ty immediately to have the malfunct ion correct­

The low beams remain switched on at all times
for safety reasons when the light switch is in the
AUTO pos ition. You can cont inue to turn the
li ghts on and off us ing the light switch . You can
st ill control all wiper functions that are inde­
pendent of the rain sensor .
