Setting the distance

~ Tap the switch to display the current set dis­
tance

~ To increase or reduce the distance by incre­
ments, tap the switch again to the left or
right. The distance between the two vehicles
will change in the instrument cluster dis­
play.
When approaching a moving vehicle up ahead,
the adaptive cruise control system brakes to match that object's speed and then maintains
the stored distance. If the vehicle ahead ac­
celerates, adaptive cruise control will also ac­
celerate up to the stored speed.
The higher the speed, the greater the distance
in yards (meters)¢ ,&.. The
Distance 3 setting
is recommended.
The distances provided are specified values.
Depending on the driving situation and the
how the vehicle ahead is driving, the actual
distance may be more or less than these tar­
get distances.
The various symbols for the time increments
appear briefly in the information line @

settings.

sponds to a distance of 92 feet/28 meters
when traveling at 62 mph (100 km/h), or a
time interval of 1 second.

sponds to a distance of 118 feet/36 meters
when traveling at 62 mph (100 km/h), or a
time interval of 1.3 seconds.
c::::::, ___ c::::::,_ Distance 3: This setting corre-
sponds to a distance of 164 feet/SO meters
when traveling at 62 mph (100 km/h), or a
time interval of 1.8 seconds.
c::::::, ____ c::::::, Distance 4: This setting corre-
sponds to a distance of 210 feet/64 meters
when traveling at 62 mph (100 km/h), or a
time interval of 2.3 seconds.
A WARNING
Following other vehicles too closely in­
creases the risk of collisions and serious
personal injury .
- Setting short distances to the traffic
ahead reduces the time and distance
available to bring your vehicle to a safe
stop and makes it even more necessary
to pay close attention to traffic.

good judgment, and select a safe follow­
ing distance for the traffic, road and
weather conditions.

I n ce rtain situat ions, the system will prompt
you to take action . This cou ld happen, for ex­
ample, if braking by the adaptive cruise con­
trol system is not enough to maintain enough
distance to the vehicle ahead.

Audi braking guard
Description
Applies to vehicles: with Audi adaptive cruise control

Braking guard uses a radar sensor. It also
functions within the limits of the system
when adapt ive cruise control is switched off.
What can Audi braking guard do?
When detected in time, the system can assess
situations when a vehicle ahead brakes sud­
denly or if your own vehicle is traveling at a
high speed and approaching a vehicle up
ahead that is moving more slowly. Braking
guard does not react if it cannot detect the
s ituation.
The system advises you of various situations:
- The
distance warning is given if you are too
close to the vehicle ahead for a long time. If
the vehicle ahead brakes sharply, you will
not be able to avoid a collision . The indicator
light . in the display comes on .
- The
approach warning is given when a de­
tected vehicle up ahead in your lane is mov­
ing much more slowly than you are or if it
brakes sharply. When thi s war ning is given,
it may on ly be possible to avoid a co llision
by swerving or brak ing sharp ly. The indicator
light . and indicator in the display will
warn you about the danger¢

If you do not react fast enough or do not react
at all to the situation, Braking guard will in­

- If a co llision is imminent, the system will
first provide an
acute warning by bri efly and
sharp ly app ly ing the brakes .
- If you do not react to the ac ute warning ,
braking guard can brake within the limits of
the system. This reduces the veh icle speed
in the event of a collision.
- At speeds under 20 mph (30 km/h), the sys ­
tem can in it iate a complete deceleration
s hortly before a collision
l) .
-If the braking guard senses that you are not
braking hard enough when a collision is im­
minent, it can increase the braking force.
Which funct ion s can be contr oll ed ?
You can switch braking guard and the dis­
tance/approach warning on or off in the radio
or MM I c> poge 106, Settings in the radio/
MMI.
A WARNING
Lack of attention can cause col lisions, oth­
er accidents and serious personal injuries.
The braking guard is an assist system and
cannot prevent a collis ion by itself. The
driver m ust always intervene . T he d river is
always responsib le for bra king at the cor­
rect time.
- Always pay close attention to traffic,
even when the brak ing guard is switched
on. Be ready to intervene and be ready to
take complete control whenever necessa­
ry. A lways keep the safe and legal dis­
tance between your vehicle and vehicles
up ahead.
- Braking guard works w ith in limits and
will not respond outs ide the system lim­
its, for example when approaching a
stopped vehicle or stationary obstacle
(end of a traff ic jam or veh icle that has
broken down in traffic).
- Always remember that the radar sensor
for the braking guard works only within
defined detection and range limits that

may prevent the proper detection of oth­
er vehicles.
- The radar sensor's function and range
can be reduced by rain, snow and heavy
spray. Moving veh icles up ahead may not
be prompt ly detected or may not be de­
tected at all .
- Reflective surfaces including crash barri­
ers or tunne l entrances may impair the
function of the radar sensor .

- You can cancel the braking that is in it iat­
ed by the system by braking yourse lf, by
accelerating not iceably or by swerving .

Approaching another obstacle will result in
the distance warning sounding at the normal
volume aga in.
Malfunctions in the s ystem
If a war ning tone is audible for about five sec­
onds when you turn on the ignit ion, there is a
mal function in the system. Have the problem
corrected by your authorized Audi dealer.
Keep t he sensors in the rear bumper clean and
free from ice so t hat the acoustic park assist
system can function properly.
A WARNING
- Sensors have dead spaces in which ob­
jects cannot be detected. Be especially
alert for small children and animals ,
since they are not a lways detected by the
sensors.
- The acoust ic park ing system is not a sub­
st itute for the d river's own caut io n and
alertness . Ultimate responsib ility always
remains with the driver during park ing
and simi lar maneuvers. Always watch
whe re you are dr iv ing .
- You should always adjust the volume and
frequency of the warning tones so that
yo u can easily hear the a co ustic distance
warning even if the radio is p laying, the
air-conditioner blower is on High or there
is a high leve l of outside noise.
- Check the settings whenever anyone
else has driven the vehicle before you.
- Remember that low obstacles for wh ich

"dive" below the system's sensing zone if
the veh icle is being backed up closer . In
th is case, the warn ing sound shutt ing off
does
not i ndi cate that you have cleared

narrow posts or fences covered by a th in
l ayer of paint may no t always be detect -

When there is an obstacle (such as a wall)
next to the parking spot, choose a spot w ith
more space on the sides. Pos ition the long
side of the blue area so that there is sufficient
space from the curb . T he area must not be on
the curb . Yo u will also need to start turn ing
the steer ing whee l much ear lie r. T he re s hou ld
be a suff ic ient amoun t of sp ace between the
curb and the b lue curve, and the blue c urve

of the vehicle rear is represented depend­

cle front swings out more than the vehicle

corner of you r vehicle does not coll ide with
any obstacles - dange r of accide nt!

Important safety instructions about
safety belts
Safety belts must always be correctly posi­
tioned across the strongest bones of your
body.
~ Always wear safety belts as illustrated and
described in this chapter.
~ Make sure that your safety belts are always
ready for use and are not damaged.
A WARNING
Not wearing safety belts or wearing them
improperly increases the risk of serious
personal injury and death. Safety belts can
work only when used correctly.
- Always fasten your safety be lts correctly
before driving off and make sure all pas­
sengers are correctly restrained.
- For maximum protection, safety belts must always be positioned properly on
the body .
- Never strap more than one person, in­
cluding small children, into any belt.
- Never place a safety belt over a child sit­ ting on your lap.
- Always keep feet in the footwell in front
of the seat while the vehicle is being d riv­
en .
- Never let any person ride with their feet
on the instrument panel or sticking out
the window or on the seat.
- Never remove a safety belt while the ve­
hicle is moving. Doing so will increase
your risk of be ing injured or killed.
- Never wear belts twisted.
- Never wear belts over rigid or breakable
objects in or on your clothing, such as
eye glasses, pens, keys, etc., as these may cause injury.
- Never allow safety belts to become dam­
aged by being caught in door or seat
hardware .
- Do not wear the shoulder part of the belt
under your arm or otherwise out of posi­
tion .

-Several layers of heavy clothing may in­
terfere with correct positioning of belts and reduce the overall effectiveness of
the system .
- Always keep belt buckles free of anything
that may prevent the buckle from latch­
ing securely.
- Never use comfort clips or devices that
create slack in the shoulder belt . Howev­
er, special clips may be requ ired for the
proper use of some child restraint sys­
tems .
- Torn or frayed safety belts can tear, and
damaged belt hardware can break in an
accident. Inspect belts regularly.
If web­
bing, bindings, buckles, or retractors are
damaged, have belts replaced by an au­
thorized Audi dealer.
- Safety belts that have been worn and
loaded in an accident must be replaced
with the correct replacement safety belt
by an authorized Audi dealer. Replace­
ment may be necessary even if damage
cannot be clearly seen. Anchorages that
were loaded must also be inspected.
- Never remove, modify, disassemble, or
try to repair the safety belts you rs elf .
-Always keep the belts clean. Dirty belts may not work properly and can impair
the function of the inertia reel¢

Automatic safety belt retractors
Every safety belt is eq uipped w ith an automat­
ic belt retractor on the shoulder be lt . T his fea­
ture locks the be lt when the belt is pulled out
fast, dur ing hard bra king and in an acci dent.
The belt may also lock when yo u drive up or
down a steep hill or through a sharp curve. During normal driving the belt lets you move
freely.
Safety belt pret ensioners
The sa fe ty belts are equippe d wi th a be lt pre­
tensioner that helps to tigh ten the safety bel t
and remove s lack when the pretensioner is ac­
tivated. The function of the pretensioner is
monitored by a warning light¢
page 20 .
Switchable locking feature
Every sa fe ty belt ex cep t the one on the dr iver
seat is eq uipped w it h a switchable locking fea ­
ture that
mu st be used w hen the safety belt is
used to attach a child safety seat . Be sure to
read the important inf ormation abo ut this

- Safety belts offer optimum protection
only when the seatback is up right and

be lts are properly posit ioned on the
body.
- Always make sure that the rear seat
backrest to wh ich the center rear safety
be lt is attached is securely latched when­
ever the rea r center safety belt is being
used. If the backrest is not secure ly
latched, t he passenger w ill move for­
ward with the ba ckr est dur ing sudd en
bra king, in a sudden maneuver and es pe­
ci ally in a crash .
- Neve r attach the safety be lt to t he buck­
le for an other sea t. At taching the belt to
the wrong buckle will redu ce s afe ty be lt
effec tiveness and can cause serio us per ­
sonal injury.
- A passenger who is not properly restrain­
ed can be seriously injured by the safety
be lt itself w hen it moves from the stro n­
ger parts of the body into cr itical areas
like the abdomen.
- Always loc k the convertible locking re­
tractor when you are secu ring a child
safety seat in the vehicle

Correct belt position is the key to getting
maximum protection from safety belts.

Standard features on your veh icle help you ad ­

- be lt height adjustment for the front seats,
- automatic belt height adjustment for the
rear seats .

-Always keep the f iller nozzle complete­
ly inside the portable conta iner before
and during filling.
- If filling a portable container made of
metal, the filler nozz le must always be
in contact with the container. Th is w ill
he lp prevent static electricity from dis­
charg ing and cause a fire .
- Never sp ill fuel inside the vehicle or
luggage compartment. Fue l vapors are
h ighly f lammable .
- Always observe local and state/provin­ cial laws regarding the use, storage
and tra nspo rta tion of fuel containers.
- Make certa in the fuel container meets
industry standards (A NSI
I ASTM
F852-86).

If any fuel has spilled onto the car, it
should be removed immediate ly to prevent
damage to the paint.
@ For the sake of the environment
As soon as the correctly operated nozzle
sw itches off automatically for the fi rs t
time, the tank is full. Do not try to add
more f ue l because fuel may spill out. In
add it ion , the expans io n s pace in the fuel
t ank will be fi lled -ca using the fue l to
overflow when it becomes warm and pol ­
lute the env iro nment.
@ Tips
- Runn ing yo ur engine while re fuelling
may ca use vapors to escape o r even
ca use fue l to spill out of the tank . This
would then shut off the fuel nozzle be­
fo re the tank is fu ll.
- Do not refuel your ve hicle w ith the igni ­
tion t urned on. The fuel gauge may oth­
erwise not ind icate the correct fue l level
after refuel ling.
- The fuel filler flap of your vehicle is not locked when you lock the vehicle from
the i nside.
