Driver information system
In addition, you can determine what information
from the trip computer should be shown in the instrument cluster disp lay . If one of the pieces of
driver information is turned
Off , that driver infor
mation will not be shown in the display. The in
formation will continue to be calculated by the
tr ip computer and can be turned back
On at any
time .
(D Tips
-This function is not available on all veh icles.
- The driving information in the efficiency
program is also reset to zero with the sin

This indicator can help conserve fuel.
Fig. 12 Display: Gearshift indicator
In order to become familiar with the gearshift in
d ictor, at firs t just drive the way you are used to.
If the current gear - and the driving situation -is
not the best one for conserving fuel, then the in
d icator will display the recommended gear. The
display shows the current gear and the gear that
is recommended
c>fig. 12.
-Upshifting The display will light up to the right
of the gear currently selected if it is recom
mending a higher gear.
-Downshifting: The display will light up to the
left of the gear current ly selected if it is recom
mending a lower gear.
Sometimes the indicator will recommend skip
ping a gear (3
> 5).
26
If there is no gearshift recommendation, then
just drive in the appropriate gear for conserving
fuel.
(D Note
This indicator can help you conserve fuel. This
indicator is not meant to show you which gear
you should a lways be in in all driving situa
tions. Somet imes, in situations such as pass
i ng, driving through mountains or when tow
i ng a tra iler, there won't be any gearshift rec

@ Tips
The display does not light up when the clutch
pedal is be ing depressed .

Manually adjustable steering wheel
The steering wheel position is fully adjustable up
and down and forward and back .
Fig. 95 Lever under the steering column
First, adjust the driver's seat correctly.
• Pull the lever¢
fig. 95 ¢ .&_ .
• Move the steering wheel to the desired posi
tion.
• Push the lever against the steering column un-
til it locks.
There must be at least 10 inches (25 cm) be tween your chest and the center of the steering
wheel. If you cannot sit more than 10 inches (25
cm) from the steering wheel, see if adaptive
equipment is available to help you reach the ped
als and increase the distance from the steering
wheel.
For detailed information on how to adjust the
driver's seat, see
¢page 60.
A WARNING
Improper use of steering wheel adjustment
and improper seating position can cause seri
ous personal injury.
- Adjust the steering wheel column only when
the vehicle is not moving to prevent loss of
vehicle control.
- Adjust the driver's seat or steering wheel so
that there is a minimum of 10 inches (25
cm) between your chest and the steering
wheel
¢page 122, fig. 138 . If you cannot
80
maintain this minimum distance, the airbag
system cannot protect you properly.
- If physical limitations prevent you from sit
ting 10 inches (25 cm) or more from the
steering wheel, check with your authorized
Audi dealer to see if adaptive equipment is
available.
- If the steering wheel is aligned with your
face, the supplemental driver's airbag can
not provide as much protection in an acci
dent. Always make sure that the steering
wheel is aligned with your chest.
- Always hold the steering wheel with your
hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock posi
tions to reduce the risk of personal injury if
the driver's airbag deploys.
- Never hold the steering wheel at the 12
o'clock position or with your hands inside
the steering wheel rim or on the steering
wheel hub. Holding the steering wheel the
wrong way can cause serious injuries to the
hands, arms and head if the driver's airbag
deploys.

multitronic, S tronic,
tiptronic
Introduction
Applies to vehicles : wi th mult itro nic/S tro nic/ tip tronic
The automatic transmission is controlled elec
tronically. The transmission upshifts or down
shifts automatically depend ing o n which drive
program is se lected .
When a
moderate driving style is used, the
transm ission selects the most economica l driv ing
mode . It will the n change up early and delay the
downshifts to give better fuel economy .
The transmission switches to a sporty mode after
a kick-down or when the driver uses a
sporty
dri ving style
characterized by quick accelerator
pedal movements, heavy acceleration, frequent
c hanges in speed and traveling at the maxim um
speed.
If desired, the driver can also select the gears
manually (tiptronic mode ) ¢ page 90.
Various automatic transmissions may be insta l
l ed, depending on the model :
multitronic transmission
The mu ltitron ic t ransm iss ion is a continuously
variable transmission. Power is transferred using
a multidisk cl utch . In contrast to conventional
automat ic transmissions using shifting opera
tions, the transmission ratio in the continuously
variable transmission is changed continuously.
This opt imizes the comfort leve l and conserves
fuel.
S tronic t ran smission
The S tronic is a d ua l-clutch transmission. Power
i s transferred using two clutches that work inde
pendently from one another . They rep lace the
torque converter used in convent io nal automatic
transm issions and allow the vehicle to accelerate
withou t a noticeable inte rru pt io n in traction. ..,.
Automat ic t ra nsm iss io n
-To prevent the vehicle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, a lways hold it in
place with the brake pedal or parking brake.
- Never hold the vehicle on an incline with a
s li pping clutch. The clutch opens automati
cally when it becomes too hot from the
overload . An indicator lamp
mJ illuminates
and a driver message appears
~ page 96
when the cl utch is overloaded.
- If the engine must remain running, never
have any dr iv ing pos ition engaged when
checking under the hood. Make sure these
lector lever has secure ly engaged and is
locked in P with the parking bra ke set
~ page 203. Otherwise, any increase in en
gine speed may set the vehicle in motion,
even with the parking brake applied.
- S tronic- and tiptron ic transmission: When
stopping on an incline, do not try to ho ld
the vehicle in place by pressing the acce lera
tor pedal while a driving gear is selected.
This can cause the transm ission to overheat
and can damage it. Activate the parking brake or press the brake pedal to prevent
the vehicle from rol ling .
- S tronic- and tiptron ic transmission: Allow
i ng the veh icle to roll when the eng ine is
stopped and the selector leve r is in N will
damage the transmission because it is not
l ub ricated under those c ircumstances .
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the parking brake is re
leased automatically only when the driver's
safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
Hill descent control
Applies to vehicles: with multitro nic/5 tronic/tip tronic
The hill descent control system assists the driver
when driving down declines.
H ill descent control is activated when the selec
tor lever is in D/S and you press the brake pedal.
The transmission au tomatically selects a gear
that is suitable for the in cl ine. Hill descent con-
94
trol tries to maintain the speed achieved at the
time of braking, within physica l and techn ical
li mitations .
It may still be necessary to adjust the
speed with the brakes .
Hill descent control switches off once the decline
l evels out or you press the accel erator pedal.
On vehicles with the cruise control system*
~ page 88 , hill descent control is a lso activated
when the speed is set.
./1. WARNING
Hill descent control cannot overcome physical
limitations, so it may not be able to maintain
a constant speed under all conditions . A lways
be ready to apply the brakes .
Manual shift program
Applies to vehicles: with multitronic/5 tronic/tiptronic
Using the manual shift program you con man
ually select gears.
