Electromechanical parking brake

T he warnin g/in dic at or l ight mo nitors the ele ctromechan ­
i c a l pa rkin g brak e.
With the parking brake applied and the ignition turned on, the
warning/indicator light ill uminates . After the ignition ha s been
turned off, the warning/indicator light continues to i lluminate for
about 30 seconds . If the parking brake is applied with the ignition
turned o ff, t he wa rn ing/ ind icato r light illum inates fo r ab out 30
seconds.
Th e war nin g/ind ica tor light w ill g o out when th e p arking b rak e is
released .
I f the warning/indicator light f lashes continuou sly after applying the
par king brake, brakin g force is not suffic ie n t to prevent t he vehic le
from rol ling unintentional ly. Please note the fo llowing:
• I f the s lo p e of th e ground is too s teep to park t he veh icle, the
addit ional drive message appears Caution: Vehicle parked too
steep.

The warning/indi cator li ght flashes if b rake fluid level is
l o w, i f th ere is an ABS s ystem m alfunctio n or a pa rk ing
br ake malfun ction .
The light i lluminates when the ignition is turned on. It goes out after
t he eng ine has been sta rted. Th is indica tes that the brake warning
li g ht i s function ing properl y.
If the brake warning light does not light up when the engine is
cranking , there may be a malfunction in the electrical system . In this
case , contact your Audi dealer.
If the brake syste m wa rn ing/indicator ligh t flashes, there is a b rake
system mal funct ion . By pr essin g the

seconds and the parking brake released, or lights up while you are
driving, the fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir is too low . If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed immediately at low speed
to the nearest authorized Audi dealer or qualified repair facility
and have the brake system inspected.
• Always keep in mind that after several brake applications, you
will need greater pressure on the brake pedal to stop your vehicle. Do not rely on strained brakes to respond with maximum stopping
power in critical situations. You must allow for increased braking
distances . The extra distance used up by fading brakes could lead
to an accident. •

If the ABS system malfunctions, the ABS warning/indicator light illu­
minates together with the brake system malfunction warning/indi ­
cator light~

• Always observe the warnings in ~ page 289, "Engine compart­
ment", before opening the hood and checking the brake fluid.
• Driving with low brake fluid is a safety hazard . Stop the car and
get professional assistance.

Engine cooling system malfunction -L
A malfunction in the engine cooling system must be
repaired as soon as possible.
When the -t symbol in the display blinks, then either the
engine coolant
temperature is too high, or the coolant level
is too low. An additional driver message can also be
displayed by pressing the [ CHECK] button:
Switch off engine and check coolant level
-Pull off the road .

Stop the vehicle.
- Turn off the engine.
Check coolant level

Add coolant if necessary=> page 305.
Continue driving only after the engine coolant
warning/ind icator light goes out.
Contact your authorized Audi dealer for assistance if necessary.
If the engine coolant level is correct, then the radiator fan may be
the cause of the malfunction.
If the generator warning/indicator light should also illuminate
~ page 79, then the fan belt may be damaged.
& WARNING
• If your vehicle should break down for mechanical or other
reasons, park at a safe distance from moving traffic, turn off the
engine and turn on the hazard warning lights

A".
• Never open the hood if you see or hear steam or coolant
escaping from the engine compartment -you risk being scalded.
Wait until you can no longer see or hear steam or coolant
escaping.
• The engine compartment of any vehicle is a dangerous area.
Before you perform any work in the engine compartment, turn of
the engine and allow it to cool. Follow the warning stickers
~ page 289, "Engine compartment" . .,_

Unlocking the vehicle with the remote control wi ll only unlock the
rear lid, t o
open it, the lid handle needs to be pressed .
Locking the vehi cle
You can lock the vehicle from outside e ither by using the re mote
control
or by inserting and turning the key in the drivers 's door lock.
When you
l oc k th e vehicle:
• All doors and the rear lid are locked .
• All turn signal lights w ill flash once when the car i s locked.
• T he anti -theft alarm system is activated . The horn of the anti ­
t hef t alarm syste m wi ll sound and the an ti-the ft alarm sys tem readi ­
ness light, located in the upper part of the driver's door panel, wil l
sta rt to bl ink.
• T he vehicle interior lights turn off .
Unlocking and lo cking with Ad van ced Key *
On vehicles which a re equipped with the Advan ced Key * authoriza­
tion system, the doors are unlocked
wi thout a key by means o f a
proximity sensor in the door hand le. The doors are simi lar ly locked
without a key usi ng t he locking button . Each door has a prox imity
sensor and a locking button .
Power side door closer*
The vehic le is equipped with a power side door closer. When c losing
a door, you simply need to gently push on the doo r. The door wil l
then automatica lly c lose by itself~
page 56.
Automatic lo cking
The automatic locking feature locks all the vehicle doors and the
rear lid when you drive fas ter than 9 mph (15 km/h) . This funct ion
can be turned on and off in the
MMI Central lo cking Menu
~ p age 55.
You can unlock the vehicle from the inside by :
• removing the key from the ignition switch (the vehicle will auto ­
matica lly un lock itself) or

• pressing the unlock part of the power lock sw itch rw or
pull ing the door handle (twice to open the rear doo rs) .
& WARNING
• When you lock your veh icle from outside , nobody -especially
c hildren -should remain in side the vehi cle . Re membe r, when you
lock the vehicle from the out side the windows cannot be opened
from the in side .
• When you leave the vehicle, alway s remove the ignition key and
t ak e it with you . Th is will prevent passengers (children , for
example ) from accidentally being locked in the vehicle should they
accidentally p ress the po wer lock ing s witch in the front doors .
• Do not leave children ins ide the vehicle unsupervised. In an
emergen cy it would be impo ssible to open the doors from the
outside without the key.
[ i ] Tips
• I n the eve nt of a crash with airbag deploymen t all locked do ors
wi ll be automatically un locked to give access to the vehicle occu ­
pan ts from the ou tside.
• I f the power lock ing system should malfunction, you can lock
each door individua lly using the vehicle key~
page 57.
• If the power locking system should fail, you can still open the
fu el t ank flap in an emerg ency ~
pag e 295.
• You are well advised not to keep va luables inside an unattended
vehic le, visible o r not. Even a properly locke d veh ic le can not provide
the security of a safe .•

Light Sensor M alfun ction
In the event of a light sensor ma lfunction, the driver is notified in the
instrument cluster display:

Fo r safety reasons the low beams are turned on permanently with
the switch in
AUTO . However, you can continue to turn the lights on
and off using the light sw itch. Have the light sensor checked as so on
as possible at a dealership.
& WARNING
• Never use daytime running lights to see where you are go ing.
They are not bright enough and will not let you see far enough ahead for safet y, es peciall y at du sk or when it i s dark . Al way s
s witch on the low beam s at du sk or when it is dark.
• Autom ati c he adlight s are onl y intended to assist the dr iver .
They do not relieve the driver of his re spon sibility to check the
headlight s and to turn them on manu ally a ccordi ng to the current
light and visibility conditions. For ex ample , fog and rain c annot be
dete cted by the l ight sen so rs . S o al ways switch on the headlight s
und er the se we ather conditions and when dr iving in the dark
~D.
• Cra she s c an happen wh en you cannot see the road ahead and
when you cannot be seen by other motor ists.
- Alway s turn on the hea dl ight s so that you can see ahead and
so that others can see your car from the back.
[ i ) Tips
• With the switch in AUTO front fog lights and rear fog lights
cannot be turned on in addition .

Cl ea r vision
• The light sensor for headlight control is located in the rear view
mi rror moun t. Do n ot app ly any stickers to the windshie ld in this
area to prevent malfunct ions or failures.
• I f you remove the ign ition from the ign ition lock wh ile the head­
lights are still on, a buzzer will sound as long as the driver's door is
open to remind you to tur n off the lights .
• Always observe the specific loca l regulations for your area as to
when t o use your ligh ts .•
Adjusting exterior lighting
The functions are set in the MM/.

Coming home
The Coming home function ensures that after turnin g off the igni­
tion and opening the driver' s door
the vehicle periphery is il lumi­
nated in the dark . In addition, the front fog lights, the tai l lights and
the license plate l ight are turned on . On-time ca n be set for a pe riod
from
O (off) to 60 seconds. .,_

To prevent damage to the wiper sys tem:
• Always loosen blades which are frozen to the windshield before
operating wipers.
• Do not use gasoline, kerosene , paint thinner, or other solvents on
or near the wiper blades .
• Do not attempt to move the wipers by hand .
• The windshield wiper blades must only be replaced when in the
service position ~

on the hood or the windshield wiper motor.

Standard setting
Move the small lever (located on the bottom edge of the
mi rror) to the fron t.

m irror) to the rear. •

Automat ic dimming fun ction
The automatic dimming function is activated every time the ignition
is turned on. The green indicator light is lit to ind icate auto dimming
is active.
When dimm ing is activated, the inside mirror will darken
automati ­
cally in response to the amount of light striking the mirror (such as
headlights from rearwa rd approaching vehicles}. Even in dimm ing
mode , the mirror surface turns bright when :
• the interior light is switched on
• reverse gear is engaged .

& WARNING
The glass of the in sid e re ar view mirror is lay ered and contain s an
e lectrolyte to achieve it s propertie s. Be aware of liquid electr olyte
l e aki ng from a broken mi rror gl ass. This liqui d can cause irritation
to skin , eyes , and re spir ator y system . If you get electrolyte in your
eye s or on your skin , i mm ed iatel y rinse wi th plenty of w ater.

Liquid electrolyte leaked from a broken mirror glass wi ll damage any
p lastic sur faces it comes in contact with. Clean up spilled electrolyte
immediately with clear water and a sponge.

• If you sw it ch off the automati c dimming fun ction on the ins ide
mirror , automatic dimming of the out side mirror s will likewise be
disabled .
• Check to make sure there are no objects preventing ligh t from
reaching the inside mirror.
• Do not a ttach any stickers to the windshield in front of the light
sensor, as this wou ld interfere with the automatic operation of the
headlights and the automatic dimm ing of the inside m irror.
• Be aware that automatic dimming of the inside mirror can on ly
operate properly if the rear window sun blind* is retracted. •

Turn the adjusting knob to position (0 ~ fig. 74 to adjust
the outs ide mirror on t he driver's side .
Turn the adjusting knob to position @ to adjust the
outside mirror on the passenger side.
Press the knob in the appropriate direct ion to
move the
m irror surface so that you have a good view to the rear.
H eated mirrors
- Turn the kn ob to positio n @.
Folding both outside mirrors flat *
-Turn the knob to @.
Depending on the outside temperature, the mirror surfaces are
heated until the ignition is switched off - even if the knob is no
longer in position
@ .
We recommend folding* the outs ide mirrors flat to help when
parking your vehicle or when maneuvering in very tight spaces .

vehic le is taken out of reverse gear .
Tilting th e passenger's side out side m irro r (on ly with

When you move the se lector lever in to R (Reverse), the m irror on the
front passenger's door (knob turned to® =>
page 83, fig. 74) will tilt
s lightly downward. Th is m ake is easier for you to see the curb when
you are backing into a parking spac e.
The mirror returns to its ini tial posit ion as soon as reverse gear is
disengaged and vehic le speed is above about 9 mph (15 km/h). The
mirror also retur ns to its init ia l pos ition if the switch is moved to the
dr iver 's outside mirror
(0 or the ignition is switched off .
Automatic anti-glare for the outside mirror s*
The outside mirrors dim at the same time as the inside mirror . When
the ignition is switched on, the mi rrors automat ically dim
depending on the amount of light striking the mirrors (such as head­
lights shi ning into the vehicle from the rear).
When you turn on the interior light, or when you move the selector
lever into
R (Rev erse), the anti-glare function stops and the mirrors
retur n to their original condition (not darkened).

• Curved (i .e. convex) mirror surfaces increase you r field o f view .
Remember that vehicles or other objects will appear smaller and
farther away than w hen seen in a flat mirror. If you use this mirr or to
estimate distances of following vehicles when changing lanes , you
cou ld estimate incorrectly and cause an acc ident .
• If the mirror housing is moved unintentionally (for example ,
wh ile pa rking your vehicle), then you must firs t fold the mirro r elec - trically. Do not readjust the mirror housing manually. You cou
ld
damage the m otor wh ich contr ols the mirror .
[ i ] Tips
If the re shou ld be a malfunction in the electrica l system, you can
still adjust the outside mirrors by pressing the edge of the mirror .•

Automatic dimming for outside mirrors
The ou ts ide mirrors are dimmed together with the automa tic
dimming of the inside mirror. When the ign ition is switched on, the
mirrors darken a utomatical ly depending on the lig ht striking them
(e.g. headlights from the rear).
When the interior lighting is switched on and when reverse gear is engaged, the m irrors are switched back to the ir o rigi nal brightness
(not dimmed).
& WARNING

electrolyte to achieve it s propertie s. Be aware of liquid electrolyte
leaking from a b rok en mirror gla ss . This liquid c an cause irr itat ion
to skin , eyes, and re spiratory sy stem . If you get electrolyte in your
eyes or on your skin , immed iately rinse with plenty of wate r. If i rri­
tation persists , seek m edi cal attention .

not locked . The steering is locked :
• If you press the
I STOP ] button aga in for more than 1 second.
• If you c lose the driver's door and lock your vehicle from the
outside .•
Electromechanical parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces the hand
brake.

- Step on the brake pedal or the accelerator pedal and
press the switch at the same time to rel ease the parking
brake. The indicator lig ht in the switch wi ll go out.
Your vehicle is equipped with an elect romechanical parking brake
which replaces the handbrake . T he parking brake is designed to
prevent the vehicle from rol ling unintentional ly.

I n add ition to the normal functions of a traditional hand brake, the
e lectromechanica l parking brake provides various convenience and
safety functions.
Emergen cy brake
An emergency brake ensur es that the vehicle can be slowed even if
t he
normal brakes fail=> page 131, "Emergency braking".
Ind icator lights
• If the parking brake is applied with the ignition tu rned on , the
indicator light in the instrument cluster (U.S models :
::i.:,, Canadian
models: ®)) and in the switch <®) will com e on .
• I f the parking brake is app lie d with the ignition
tu rn ed off , the
indicator light in the instrument cluster (U.S. models: ::.:\,, Canadian
models :(®) ) and in the switch© will come on for about 30 seconds
and then go out .
& WARNING
If the vehicle i s stationary and the tr ansmi ssion is engag ed with
the engine ru nning , the engine should not be speeded up (e .g .
manu ally from under the hood ). Otherwi se the vehicle will sta rt to
move -you run the risk of a n accident .

display may vary depending on the type of disp lay in your vehicle .
The indicator light
CRU ISE (US model) I (')0 (Canadian mode l) wi ll also
light up in the instrument cluster.
The speed is kept constant via an engine output adjustment or active brake intervention .
_& WARNING
• Always pa y attent ion to traffic even whe n the crui se control is
switc hed on. You are alw ays r esp onsi ble for your speed and the
di sta nce b etween your vehi cle and other vehi cle s.
• For s afet y reason s, the crui se control should not be u sed in the
c ity , in stop- and-go traffic , on twi sting roads and when road condi ­
t ion s a re p oor (s uch a s ice , fo g, gra vel , he avy ra in and h ydro ­
planing ) - risk of accident.
• Turn off the crui se control tempor arily when e nte ring tu rn
lan es, highway exit lanes or in constru ction zone s.
• Plea se note that in adv ertentl y "re sting " yo ur foot on the accel­
erator ped al cau se s the cruise control not to brake . Thi s is b ecau se
the crui se control i s overridden b y the dri ve r's acc eleration .

Changing speed

ment Change speed in increments of 1 mph (1 km/h) by
lightly pressing
the lever . If you keep the lever pressed down, you will a lter your
speed in 5 mph (10 km /h) increments .
You can a lso press the acce lerator pedal down to increase your
speed, e.g. if you want to pass someone. The speed you saved
earlier will resume as soon as you release the accelerator pedal.
If , however, you exceed your saved speed by 5 mph (10 km/h) for
longer than 5 minutes, the cruise control will turn off temporarily .

Presetting your speed
You can prese t your desire d speed while the vehicle is not
moving.
