In a co llision, the laws of phys ics mean that even smal ler items tha t
are loose in the vehicle will turn into h eavy missiles that can cause
s e rious in jury . Items i n the veh icl e pick up kine tic energy which var ies
w ith the vehicle and the we ight of the item . Vehicle speed is the most
s ignifi cant factor.
For example, in a frontal coll is io n at a speed of 30 mp h (48 km/h),
t he f orces a ctin g on a 1 0-lb (4 .5 kg) o bject are about
20 times th e
normal weight o f th e ite m. This means that the weig ht of the item
woul d su dden ly be the eq uiva lent of about 200 lbs (90 kg) . One can
e asily imag ine the injuries tha t an item of that we ig ht flyi ng fre ely
throug h the passenger compartme nt can cause in a collisio n at a
s p ee d co nsidere d relati vely low.
& WARNING
Weak, damaged or improper straps used to secure items to tie­
downs can fail during hard braking or in a collision and cause
serious personal injury .
• Always use suitable retaining straps and properly secure items
to the tie -downs in the luggage compartment to he lp prevent
items from shifting or flying forward.
• When the rear seat backrest is folded down, always use suit­
able retaining straps and properly secure item s to the tie-downs in
the luggage compartment to help prevent items from flying
forward into the passenger compartment.
• Never attach a child safety seat tether strap to a tie-down. •

Wh en usin g a roof rack system whic h has a lower load carry ing
capac it y, you mus t not use up the t otal ma ximum permi ssible load
carrying ca pac ity spe cified above. Instead, you s hould lo ad t he roof
r ack s yst em o nly to t he ma ximum c apacity speci fied by the man ufa c­
turer of the roof rack system.
& WARNING

sure the roof rack is installed exactly as specified above

• Always use suitable mounting straps for securing items to the

• Items on the roof rack must always be securely mounted.
• The use of a roof rack can negatively affect the way a vehicle
handles . Cargo that is large, heavy, bulky , long or flat will have a
greater negative influence on the vehicle's aerodynamics , center
of gravity and overall handling. Always drive slowly, avoid sudden
braking and maneuvers when transporting cargo on the roof of
your vehicle.
• Never exceed the maximum permissible load carrying capacity
of the roof of your vehicle, the permissible axle weights and the
permissible total weight of your vehicle=>

• Hang clothes in such a way that they do not impair the driver's
vision .
• The coat hooks must only be used for lightweight clothing. Do
not leave any heavy or sharp edged objects in the pockets which
may interfere with the side curtain airbag deployment and can
cause personal injury in a crash.
• Do not use coat hangers for hanging clothing on the coat hooks
as this can interfere with proper deployment of the side curtain
airbags in an accident.
• Do not hang heavy objects on the coat hooks, as they could
cause personal injury in a sudden stop. •

Heated front seats Q)
The seat cushion and the seat back of the front seats can
be heated electrically.
- Press the~ button.
- Rotate the regulator to the desired setting.
In position O the heating for the seats is turned off. The range of
adjustment is between
1 and 6.
The setting will appear for a few seconds in the MMI display.

on the seats or place heavy loads on a small area of the seat .•

The seat cushions and seat backs of the two outer rear

heating for the left rear seat .
- Rotate the thumb wheel@ to turn on and adjust the
heating for the right rear seat.
In position O the heating for the seats is turned off . The range of
adjustment is between
1 and 6 .
Th e rear seat heating opera tes only when the seats are occupied. If
the rear seat is not occupied, you should turn the heating for the
seats off to prevent unintended heating of the seating surfaces .

Please note that the weight of objects placed on the seat will also be
detected. This weight may be enough to cause the seat h eater to turn

Improperly stored luggage or other items can fly through the
vehicle causing serious personal injury in the event of hard braking
or an accident. To help reduce the risk of serious personal injury:
• Always put objects, for example, luggage or other heavy items
in the luggage compartment .
• Always secure objects in the luggage compartment using the
tie-down eyelets and suitable straps.
& WARNING
Heavy loads will influence the way your vehicle handles. To help
reduce the risk of a loss of control leading to serious personal
injury:
• Always keep in mind when transporting heavy objects, that a
change in the center of gravity can also cause changes in vehicle
handling:
-Always distribute the load as evenly as possible.
- Place heavy objects as far forward in the luggage compart-
ment as possible.
• Never exceed the Gross Axle Weight Rating or the Gross Vehicle
Weight Rating specified on the safety compliance sticker on the
left door jamb . Exceeding permissible weight standards can cause
the vehicle to slide and handle differently.
• Please observe information on safe driving=>
page 174.

To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas from being drawn into the
vehicle, always keep the rear lid closed while driving.
• Never transport objects larger than those fitting completely
into the luggage area because the rear lid cannot be fully closed.

• If you absolutely must drive with the rear lid open , observe the
following notes to reduce the risk of poisoning:
-Close all windows,
- Close the power roof*,
- Open all air outlets in the instrument panel,
- Switch off the air recirculation,
- Set the fresh air fan to the highest speed.

Always make sure that the doors, all windows, the power roof*
and the rear lid are securely closed and locked to reduce the risk of
injury when the vehicle is not being used.
• After closing the rear lid, always make sure that it is properly
closed and locked.
• Never leave your vehicle unattended especially with the rear lid
left open. A child could crawl into the vehicle through the luggage
compartment and close the rear lid becoming trapped and unable
to get out. Being trapped in a vehicle can lead to serious personal
injury.
• Never let children play in or around the vehicle.
• Never let passengers ride in the luggage compartment. Vehicle
occupants must always be properly restrained in one of the
vehicle's seating positions .
(I) Tips
• Air circulation helps to re du ce win dow fogging. Stale air escap es
to the outside through vents in the trim panel, on the left s ide of the
lugg age compartment . B e sur e to k eep these slots free and open.
• Th e tire p ress ure must cor respond to the load -see the tire pres ­
sure sticker on the fuel filler door. •

Tie-downs
The luggage compartment is equipped with four tie­
downs to secure luggage and other items.
Use the tie-downs to secure yo ur cargo properly ~ page 181,
"Loading the luggage compartment".
In a collision, the laws of physics mean that even sma ller items that

serious injury. Items in the vehicle possess energy wh ich vary w ith
vehicle speed and the weight of the item. Vehicle speed is the most

the forces acting on a 10-lb (4 .5 kg) object a re ab out 20 times the
normal weig ht of the item. This means that the weight of the item
wou ld s uddenly be abo ut 20 0 lbs. (90 kg). You can imagine the inju­
r ies that a 200 lbs. (90 kg) item flying freely throug h the passenger
compartment could cause in a collision like this .
& WARNING

If you believe that your vehicle has a defect
which could cause a crash or could cause injury or death , you should immedi ately inform the
National Highway Traffi c Safet y Admini stration
(NHTSA) in addition to notif ying Audi of
America, Inc.
If N HTSA rece ives similar complaint s, it may
open an in vestigation, and if it find s that a
safet y defe cts exist s in a group of vehicles, it
may order a recall and remedy campaign.

-Make sure that your passengers also buckle up a nd prop ­
erly wear their safety belts .
- Protect c hildren with a child rest raint system appropria te
fo r the size and ag e.
The warn ing light ~ in the instrument cluster lights up when the igni­
tion is sw itched on as a reminder to fasten the safety belts. In addi­
tion, you will hear a warn ing to ne .
After the ignition is switched on, the warn ing light in the instrument
clu ster will alw ays come on fo r a bout 6 seconds and i f the driver has
not fastened the safety belt, a warning tone will also sound for about
6 seconds. As soon as the d rive r has fastened the safety belt, the
warning tone will stop and the war ning light w ill go out.
If the driver or front seat passenger have not buck led-up within about
1 0 se conds afte r th e war ning tone has stopped and the veh icle is
moving faster than about 15 mph, the warning tone will sound again
for a bout 6 se conds and then s to p for 24 seco nds and the n re pea t
this rem inder sequence for a max imum of 2 m inutes . At speeds
below 5 mph, the w arning tone will not sou nd.
Fa sten your safety belt and make sure that your passenger s also
properly put on their safety belts.
& WARNING
• Safety belt s are the single most effe ctiv e mean s available to
reduce the risk of serious injury and death in automobile a cci­
dents . For your protection and that of your pa ssenger s, always
c orrectly wear safety belts when the vehicle is moving .
• Failure to pay attention to the warning light that come on,
could lead to person al injury .•

The p hys ica l pr inc iples are simple. Both the vehicle and the passen­
gers possess energy which var ies wit h veh icle speed and body weight.
E nginee rs ca ll t his ene rgy "kinetic energy."
The higher the speed of the veh icle and t he greater the vehicle's
we ight, the more energy that has to be "abso rbed" in the crash .
Vehicle speed is the most sig nifican t fa ctor. If t he speed doubles
from 15 to 30 mph (25 to 50 km/h), the energy increases 4 times! .,

Child restraints on the front seat - some

Even t hough your ve hicle is eq uipped with an Advanced Airbag
System, ma ke ce rtain that a ll chi ld ren, especia lly those 12 years an d
younger, always r ide in the back seat prope rly rest rained fo r th eir age
and si ze. The airbag on the passenger side makes the front seat a
po tentially da ngerous place fo r a child to r ide. The fro nt seat is not
the safest place for a ch ild in a forward-facing child safety seat. It can
be a very dange rous place fo r an i nfan t or a child in a rearward-fac ing
seat.
Th e Advanced Ai rbag System in your vehicle has been cer tified to
comply with the req uirements of Un ited States Federa l Moto r Veh icle
Sa fety Standard 208 as applicable at the time your vehicle was manu­
factured.
The Standard requires the front airbag on the passenger side to be
tu rne d off ("s uppressed") if a c hild up to abou t one ye ar of age
restra ined in o ne of the rear -facing or forward -fac ing infant
restra ints listed in Fed era l Moto r Vehicle Safety Standard 208 with
whic h the Advanced Airbag System in yo ur vehicle was cert ified has
been installed on the front passenger seat. For a listing of the ch ild
restra in ts that were used to certify compliance with the US Saf ety
Standard =>
page 219.
The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ligh t in th e in st rume nt p anel t ells you
when the front Advanced A irbag on the passenger side has been
tur ned off by the ele ct ronic con trol uni t.

T he
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes o n when t he control unit
de tects a total weight on t he front passenger seat that req uires the
front airbag to be t urned off .
If th e total weight o n the front passenger seat is more than th at of a
typical 1 year-o ld child but less than the weight of a small adult, the
fr on t a ir bag on the passenge r si de c an deploy (t he
PASSENGER AIR
BAG OFF
light does not come on) . If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
light does not come on, the front airbag on the passenger side has
not been turned off by the electronic co ntrol unit and can deploy if
the control unit senses an impact t hat meets the conditions stored in
its memory.
For example, the airbag may deploy if:
• a small child that is heavier than a typical 1 year -old child is on the
front passenger seat (regard less of whether the chi ld is in one of the
child safety seats listed =>
page 219), o r
• a child who has outgrown child restraints is on the front passenger
sea t.
If the fro nt passenger a irbag is tur ned off, the

If the front passenger ai rbag dep loys, the Federal Standard requires
t he a irbag to mee t the "low risk" deployme nt cr iter ia to reduce the
