brightness increases again, the low beams are turned off again auto­
matically =>& .
In the
AUTO position the low beams are switched off automatically
when the ignition is turned off.
Light Sensor Malfunction
In the event of a light sensor ma lfunct ion, the driver is notified in the
instrument cluster display:
Automatic headlights/automatic wipers defective
For safety reasons the low beams are turned on permanently with t he
switch in
AUTO. However, you can continue to turn the lights on and
off using the light switch. Have the light sensor checked as soon as
possible at a dealership.
& WARNING
• Never use daytime running lights to see where you are going.
They are not bright enough and will not let you see far enough
ahead for safety, especially at dusk or when it is dark. Always
switch on the low beams at dusk or when it is dark.
• Automatic headlights are only intended to assist the driver .
They do not relieve the driver of his responsibility to check the
headlights and to turn them on manually according to the current
light and visibility conditions. For example, fog and rain cannot be
detected by the light sensors. So always switch on the headlights
under these weather conditions and when driving in the dark
io.
• Crashes can happen when you cannot see the road ahead and
when you cannot be seen by other motorists.
- Always turn on the headlights so that you can see ahead and
so that others can see your car from the back.
[ i ) Tips
• With the switch in AUTO front fog lights and rea r fog ligh ts cannot
be turned on in addition .
Controls and equip ­

Clear vision
•
The light sensor for headlight control is located in the rear view
mirror mount. Do not apply any stickers to the winds hield in this area
to prevent malfunctions or failures .
• If you remove the ignition from the ignitio n lock w hile the head­
lights are still on, a buzzer will sound as long as the dr iver's door is
open to remind you to turn off the lights.
• Always observe the specific loca l regulations for your area as to
when to use your lights .•
Adjusting exterior lighting
The functions are set in the MMI.
-Select: Function button [CAR]> Systems* > Exterior
lighting .
Coming home
The Coming home function ensures tha t after turning off the igni­
tion and opening the driver's door
the vehicle per iphery is illum i­
nated in the dark. In addition, the front fog lights, the tail lights and
the license plate light are turned on. On-time can be set for a per iod
from O (off) to 60 seconds .
Leaving home
The Leaving home function ensu res that when unlocking the vehicle
per iphery is illuminated in the dark. In addition, the front fog lights,
the tail lights and the license plate light are turned on. This function
can be turned on and off .
Daytime running lights
USA models: On vehicles with xenon lights the daytime running
lights can be turned on or off using this function . On vehicles with
halogen lights there is no daytime running lights function .
Canada models: The function cannot be turned off. It is activated
automatically each time the ignition is tur ned on. This menu item is
shown "greyed out". •

• Do not attach any st ickers to the w indshield in front of the light
sensor, as this would inte rfe re with the a utomat ic operat ion of the
headlights and the automat ic dimming of the ins ide mir ror.
• Be aware that a utomatic dimming o f the in si de mir ror can on ly
operate proper ly if the rear w indow s un b lin d* is retracted . •
Outside mirrors
The outside mirrors are elec trically ad jus ted.

- Turn the adjusting knob to position ® to adjust the
outside mir ror on the passenger side .
- Press the knob in the appropriate direction to move the
mirror surface so that you have a good view to the rear .

You are well-advised to fold* the o utside mirrors in when maneu­
ver ing in tight spa ces or when leav ing t he car parked close to ot her
vehicles.
Memory setting for the outside mirrors *
When the seat position is saved in the memory, the position of the
outs ide mirro rs is saved at the same time~ page 79.
If the position of the mirro r su rface is changed on a tilted mirror, this
new posit io n wi ll be automat ically saved to the rem ote key w hen the
vehicle is taken out of reverse gear .
Tilting the passenger's side outside mirror (only
with seat memory )
When yo u move the selector lever into R (Reverse), the mir ror on t he
front passenger 's door (knob turned to@ ~ fig. 61) will tilt slight ly
downward . Th is ma ke is eas ier for you to see t he curb when you are
back ing into a parki ng space .
T he mirror returns to its initial position as soon as reverse gear is
disengaged and ve hicle speed is above about 9 mph (15 km/h) . The
mirro r also returns to its initia l position if the switch is moved to the
dr ive r's o uts ide mirro r© or th e ig ni tion is swit ched off .
Automatic anti-glare for the outside mirrors*
The o utside mirrors dim at the same t ime as the inside m irro r. When
the ign it ion is sw itched on, the mirrors automatically dim depend ing
on the amo unt of light str iking the m irro rs (su ch as head lights
shining into the vehicle from the rear).
When you turn on the inter io r li ght, or w hen you move the se lec tor
lever into
R (Reverse), the anti-glare f unction stops and the mirrors
return to their orig inal condition (not darkened).

• Curved ( i.e. co nvex) mir ror s urfaces increase your field of view.
Remember that vehicles or other objects will ap pear smaller and
f art her away th an whe n seen in a fla t mi rror. If you use th is mi rro r to
estimate distances of follow ing ve hicles when chang ing lanes, you
could estimate i nco rre ct ly and ca u se an a cci dent .
• If the mir ror ho using is moved un inte ntionally (for examp le, whi le
par king yo ur veh icle), then you m ust fir st f old the mir ror ele ctrically.
Do not read just the mirro r hous ing manually. You could damage the
mot or w hic h con trols the mi rror .

If the re should be a m alfu nction in the ele ct ric al sys tem, you can st ill
adjust the outs ide mirrors by pressing the edge of the m irror. •

Automatic dimming for outside mirrors
T he ou tside mir rors are dimmed toge ther w it h t he a utoma tic
dimming of the ins ide mirror . When the ignition is sw itched on, t he
m irrors da rken a utomat ica lly depend ing on the light stri king them
(e .g . headlights from the r ea r) .
When the interio r light ing is sw itched on and when reverse gear is
engaged , the mi rrors are switche d back to their or ig inal b rightness
(not d immed).
& WARNING
Broken glass of automatic dimming mirror can cause electrolyte
fluid leakage. Electrolyte fluid can irritate skin, eyes, and respira­ tory system.
• Repeated or prolonged exposure to electrolyte can cause irrita­
tion to the respiratory system, especially among people w ith
& WARNING (co ntinued )
asthma o r other respiratory conditions . Get fresh air immediately
by leaving the vehicle or, if that is not po ssible, open window s and
doors all the way.
• If electrolyte gets into the eyes, flush them thoroughly with
large amounts of clean water fo r at least 15 minutes; medical
attention i s recommended.
• If electrolyte contacts skin , flush affected area with clean
water for at least 15 minutes and then wash affected area w ith
soap and water; medical attention is recommended. Thoroughly
wash affected clothing and shoes before reuse.
• If swallowed and person is conscious, rinse mouth with water
for at least 15 minutes. Do not induce vomiting unle ss instructed
to do so by medical professional. Get medical attention immedi·
ately.

Activating or deactivating the compass
The direction is displayed on the interior rear view mirror.

To activate or deactivate, hold the@ button down until
the red display appears or disappears .
The digital compass only works with the ignition turned on. The direc­
tions are displayed as initials:
N (North), NE (Northeast), E (East), SE
(Southeast), S (South) , SW (Southwest), W (West), NW (Northwest).

To avoid inaccurate directions, do not allow any remote controls ,
electr ical systems, or metal parts close to the mirr or.•

Setting the magnetic deflection zone
The correct magnetic deflection zone must be set in order
to display the directions correctly .

Calibrating the compass
The compass has to be recalibrated if the display is wrong
or inaccurate .
-Hold the@ button down until the letter C is displayed on
the interior rear view mirror .
- Drive in a circle at a speed of about 5 mph (10 km/h) until
a direction is shown on the interior rear view mirror.
& WARNING
The digital compass is to be used as a directional aid only. Even
though you may want to look at it while you are driving, you must
still pay attention to traffic, road and weather conditions as well
as other possible hazards. •

Deactivating
- Press the button again . T he indicator light o n the b utton
goes out.
The system works at speeds faster tha n 19 mph (30 km/h) .

• Imp roper reliance on the side assist system can cause collisions
and seriou s per sonal injury:
- Never rely only on s ide ass ist when changing lanes.
- Alway s che ck rear view mirror s to m ake sure that it i s safe to
change lanes.
• Side a ssist cannot detect all vehicles under all condition s­
danger of accident!
• Side a ssi st cannot detect vehicle s in time to alert you when
they approach from beh ind at very high speed, or fall drop back
very quickly .
• The radar sen sor's
v is ion can be reduced or entirely blocked by
rain , snow, and heavy spray . This can result in side as sis t not
adequately detecting vehicle s or , in some cases, not detecting
them at a ll. Alway s keep an eye on the dir ection you are traveling
and the rele vant area around the vehicle.
• Please note that side assist indicates there are approaching
vehicles , or vehicles in you r blind spot, only after you r vehicle has
reached a driving speed of at lea st 19 mph (30 km/h).
• Side assist signal doe s not work around t ight corners (turning
radius les s than 328 feet , or 100 m).
• Side assist is no replacement for the driver 's full attention . The
driver alone is respon sible for lane change s and s imilar driving
maneuvers. Always keep an eye on the direction you are traveling
and the relevant area around the vehicle.

• T o ensure that you do not adversely affe ct s ide as sist , do not block
the area on the rear b umper where the radar sensors are located with
fo reign objects (such as st ic kers or b icycle ra cks).
• Make s ure that the signal light on the o utside mi rror is not
bloc ked by stic ke rs or othe r items.

Safety tips
T he s ide assist detection may be limited w hen driving aro und narrow
str eet co rn ers, on hill y stree ts, and under p oor we ath er co nditions . It is possib
le that the radar senso rs may also detect other objects,
such a s high or st agg ere d gu ardr ails.
Side assis t does not measure ac tual lane wid th . T he sys tem assumes
a fixe d lane w idth . Detection in the le ft and rig ht lanes is based on
th is ass um ed lan e width . Wh en drivi ng on narrow ro ads or w hen
driv ing to t he left or r ight of t he cente r of a t ravel lane, it is possib le
that vehicles will be de te ct ed th at are
no t in th e lan e nex t to th e lane
you a re us ing.

Sensors in the bumper
Sensors are located in the rear bumpers . If these detect a n obsta cle,
audib le and visual sig nals wa rn you. The range at w hich the sensors
beg in to measure is approximately:

Center rear 5 .2 ft (1.60 m)
Distan ce warning when reversing s tarts w hen an obsta cle is detec ted
in the range of the parking ass ist system. As the d ista nce decreases,
t he time in te rval between the audib le tones becomes shorter .
When the dis tance is less tha n 1ft
(0.30 m), the tone becomes
cont inuo us. At th is point yo u should stop back ing up.
If the dis tance to an obs tacle stays the s am e, t he volume o f the
distance signal chime is grad ually reduced after about
4 seconds
(does not affe ct the conti nuous signal tone) . App roac hing an oth er
obs tacle w ill cause the distance sig nal to sound aga in at t he normal
vol ume.
Rear view camera coverage area
Th e MM I display s hows the area covere d by the rea r view c amera
=>
page 16 2, fig. 156 G) . Objects that a re not in the area covered @
are not s hown on the MMI dis play .
W e recommend that you prac tice parking w ith th e rear v iew camera
in a traff ic-free location o r parking lot to become fam iliar with the
system, the or ientat ion lines, a nd their functi on . W hen doing this,
there should be good light and weathe r cond itions.
I n the MMI di spla y, obje cts o r ve hicl es appea r closer or fu rt h er aw ay
if:
• you are dr iv ing in reverse gea r from a level sur face onto an incline,
or a dow nwar d slop e,
• you are drivin g in reverse gear toward protrud ing ob jects,
• t he vehicle is ca rry ing too much load in the rear.
T he accuracy of the orientat ion lines and blue s urfaces d imin ishes if :

• the image on the screen is not visible due to sun g la re and reflec­

Caring for the rear view camera lens
The re ar view came ra is locat ed above the r ear license pla te br acket .
For the pa rking ass ist to operate, the lens =>
page 162, fig. 157 m ust
be ke pt clean:
• Dampen the lens wi th a household alcoho l-based glass cleaner,
and clean the lens wi th a d ry cloth => 0.
• Remove snow with a hand br us h and ice preferab ly w it h a de- icing
sp ray =>0.
& WARNING
• The parking aid cannot replace the driver's attention. The
driver alone is responsible for parking and similar driving maneu •
vers.
• Always keep your eyes on the vehicle 's surroundings, using the
rear view mirror as well.
• Do not allow yourself to be distracted from traffic by the rear
view camera pictures.
• If the position and the installation angle of the camera has
changed, for example, after a rear end collision, do not continue
to use the system for safety reasons. Have it checked by a qualified dealership .

the markings @to help you estimate the distance from an
obstacle. Each marking presents to 3 f t (1 m) . The blue

approximately 16 ft (5 m) to the rear .
- While driving in reverse gear, adjust the steering wheel ang le to fit the parking space with the aid of the orange

the sys tem's de te ct ion range as they are app roached and will no t
conti nue to be signaled . Objects such as barrier cha ins, trailer draw
bars, thin painted ve rtica l poles or fences may not be detected by the
system , posing risk of damage.
• In the MMI display , the direc tion o f travel o f the vehicle rear is
represen ted depend ing on the steering whee l angle. The vehicle front
swings out more than the veh icle rear . Maintain plenty of distance
from an obstacle so that your outside mirror or a corner of your
vehicle does not collide with any obstacles -danger of accident !•
