has been assigned a code. In case of a ma l­
function, the component will be identified
and the fault stored as a code in the contro l
module memory.
The MIL light may a lso illuminate if there is a
leak in the on-board fue l vapor recovery sys­
tem .
If the light illuminates after a refue lling,
stop the vehicle and make sure the fuel filler
cap is properly closed ¢
page 216.
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the
stored data can only be displayed using spe­
cial diagnostic equipment (generic scan tool
for OBD) .
In order to connect the special diagnostic
equipment, push the plug into the Data L ink
Connector (DLC). The DLC is located to the
right of the hood release¢
fig. 16.
Your authorized Audi dealer or a qualified
service station can interpret the code and per­
form the necessary repair .
A WARNING
Do not use the diagnostic connector for
personal use . Incorrect usage can cause
malfunctions, which can increase the risk
of a coll ision!
Electronic speed limiter
-
Your veh icle may be factory equipped with
tires that are rated for a maximum speed of
130 mph (210 km/h). This is less than the
maximum speed of you r vehicle. To reduce the
risk of sudden tire failure and loss of control if
the vehicle is operated at excessive speeds,
your veh icle also has an electronic speed limit­
er. The electronic speed limiter prevents your
vehicle from go ing faster than the tire speed
rating. For more informat ion ¢
page 257 .
If the engine control unit receives faulty vehi­
cle road speed s ignals, the Malfunction Indi­
cator Lamp (MIU
¢'4 will illuminate. If this
occurs, contact the nearest authorized Aud i
dealer for assistance. S models
Your
vehicle's top speed is elect ron icall y limit­
ed to 155 mph (250 km/h).
If the engine control unit receives faulty veh i­
cle roadspeed signals, the Malfunction Indica­
tor Lam p (MIL)
¢'4 will illuminate . If this oc­
curs, contact the nearest authorized Audi
dealer for assistance.

Always observe the posted speed limits
and adjust your speed to suit prevailing
road, traffic and weather cond itions. Never
drive your vehicle faster than the maxi­
mum speed rating of the tires installed .

- Automatic headlights are only intended
to assist the driver . They do not relieve
the driver of his responsibility to check
the headlights and to turn them on man­
ually according to the current light and
visibility conditions. For example, fog
cannot be detected by the light sensors.
So always switch on the headlights

under these weather conditions and
when driving in the dark.
- Crashes can happen when you cannot see
the road ahead and when you cannot be
seen by other motorists. Always turn on
theheadlightssothatyoucanseeahead and so that others can see your car from
the back .
- The rear fog lights should only be turned
on in accordance with traffic regulation,
as the lights are bright for following traf­
fic.
- Please observe legal regulations when using the lighting systems described .
@ Tips
-The light sensor* for automatic head­
light range control* is located in the rear
view mirror mount . You should therefore
not apply any st ickers to the windshield
in this area in order to prevent malfunc­
tions or failures.
- In the event of a light sensor malfunc­
tion, the driver is notified in the instru­
ment cluster display

-You will hear a warning tone if you open
the driver door when the exterior lights
are switched on.
- In cool or damp weather, the inside of
the headlights, turn signa ls and tail
lights can fog over due to the tempera­
ture difference between the inside and
outside. They will clear shortly after
switching them on. This does not affect
the service life of the lighting.
Emergency flasher
T he emergency flasher makes other motorists
aware that you or your vehicle are in an emer­
gency situation .

When the emergency flasher is on, all four
turn s ignals blink at the same time. The turn
signal indicator lights

ment cluster, as well as the light in the emer­
gency flasher switch~ blink likewise. The
emergency flashers also work when the igni­
tion is turned off.
The emergency flashers will turn on automati­
cally if you are in an accident where the airbag
has deployed.
@ Tips
You should turn on the emergency flashers
when:
- you are the last vehicle standing in a traf­
fic jam so that any other vehicles coming
can see you, or when
- your vehicle has broken down or you are
in an emergency situation, or when
-your vehicle is being towed by a tow
truck or if you are towing another vehicle
behind you.
Adjusting the exterior lighting
The settings are adjusted in the MMI.

A WARNING
Do not use the high beam or headlight
flasher if you know that these could blind
oncoming traffic.

The instrument illumination (for dials and
needles) lights on when the ign it ion is
sw itched on and the vehicle lig hts are
turned off. As the daylight fades, the ill u­
m ination of the dials likewise dims auto­
mat ically and w ill go out comp lete ly when
the o utside lig ht is ve ry low. This fea ture is
meant to remi nd you t o swit ch on the
headl igh ts when o utside light condi tions
become poor.

When lowering or raising the sunshade,
make sure there is nothing in its way and
that it has a free path to t ravel. Th is cou ld
cause perso nal inju ry.
@ Tips

- Pressing the button rn severa l t imes
consec utive ly can trigger the overload
protect ion. The sun s hade can only be ex­
tended/retracted again after a brief wait­
ing period.
- The rear window sun shade only func­
tions when the vehicle i nterior is warmer
than 14°F ( -10°() .

Move th e windshield wiper lever to the corre­
sponding pos ition:
@ -Windshie ld wipers off
(I) -Rain sensor mode . The windshield w ipers
switch on once the vehicle speed exceeds ap­
p roximately 2 mph (4 km/h) and it is raining.
The higher the rain sensor sensitivity is set
(switch @to the right), the earlier the wind­
shield wipers react to moisture on the wi nd­
shie ld. You can deact ivate rain sensor mode in
the MMI, which w ill then activate intermittent
mode. Selec t:

> Off . In intermittent mode, you can
adjust the interval time using the switch@.
@-Slow wiping
@-Fast wiping
© -Single wipe. If you hold the lever in this
position longer, the wipers switch from slow
wiping to fast wip ing.
® - Clean the windshield. The wipers wipe
one time after several seconds of driv ing to
remove water drop lets. You can switch this
function off by mov ing the lever to position ®
within 10 seconds after the afterw ipe . The af­
terw ipe fun ct ion is react ivated the next time
you swit ch the ig nition on.
Cleaning the headlights* . The headlight wash­
e r system* operates only when the headlights
are on. If you move the lever to pos ition ®, t
h e headlights and the night vision assistant
camera* are washed in intervals.
.&_ WARNING
-
-The rain sensor is only designed to assist
and support the driver.
It remains entire­
ly t he driver's responsibility to monitor
outside weather cond itions and to man­
ually activate the wipe rs as soon as rain
or drizzle reduces v isibility through the
windshie ld.
- The windsh ield must no t be treated w ith
wate r-repellent mate rials. They can in­
crease glare unde r poo r vis ibility condi ­
tions such as we tness, d arkness, or when
the s un is low on the hor izon. In addi­
tion, they can cause the w indshield w ip­
ers to chatter .
- Prope rly f unctioning windshield wiper
b lades are required for a clear view and
safe driving

- In the case of frost, check whethe r th e
windshield wiper blades are frozen to
the windsh ield. Sw itching on the wind­
shield wipers can damage the wiper
blades!
- Prior to us ing a car wash, the w indshield
w iper system must be sw itched off (lever
in posit ion @). Th is he lps to prevent un­
intentional switching on and damage to
the winds hield wiper system.
- Do not use the w ipers to clear a frosted
w indow. Us ing the wipers as a conven­
ient ice scrape r will destroy the wipe r
blades .
(D Tips
-The windshie ld w ipers are switched off
w hen the ignit ion is off . Activate the
w indshield wipers after the ign ition is
s witched back o n by moving the w ind­
shield wiper lever to any position.
- Worn or dirty windshield wipe r blade s
result in streaking. This can affec t the

Manual anti-glare adjustment
.. Move the small lever (located on the bottom
edge of the mirror) to the rear.
Automatically dimming mirrors* .. To dim the rearview mirror and both exterior
mirrors, press the @button. The diode @
turns on. The rearview and exterior mirrors
dim automatically when light shines on
them, for example from headlights on ave­
hicle to the rear.
&_ WARNING
Electrolyte fluid can leak from automatic
dimming mirrors if the glass is broken.
Electrolyte fluid can irritate skin, eyes and
respiratory system.
- Repeated or prolonged exposure to elec­
trolyte can cause irritation to the respira­
tory system, especially among people
with asthma or other respiratory condi­
tions. Get fresh air immediately by leav­
ing the vehicle or, if that is not possible,
open windows and doors all the way.
- If electrolyte gets into the eyes, flush
them thoroughly with large amounts of
clean water for at least 15 minutes;
medical attention is recommended.
- If electrolyte contacts skin, flush affect­
ed area with clean water for at least 15
minutes and then wash affected area
with soap and water; medical attention
is recommended. Thoroughly wash af­
fected clothing and shoes before reuse.

- If swallowed and person is conscious,
rinse mouth with water for at least 15
minutes. Do not induce vomiting unless
instructed to do so by medical professio­
nal. Get medical attention immediately .
(D Note
Liquid electrolyte leaking from broken mir­
ror glass will damage any plastic surfaces
it comes in contact with . Clean up spilled
electrolyte immediately with clean water
and a sponge.
@ Tips
- Switching off the dimming function of
the inside rear view mirror also deacti­
vates the automatic dimming function of the exterior mirrors.
- The automatic dimming mirrors do not
dim when the interior lighting is turned
on or the reverse gear is selected.
-Automatic dimming for the mirror only
operates properly if the light striking the
inside mirror is not hindered in any way.

Switching the memory function on/off
• Press the IOFFI but ton to swi tch the memory
fu nction on/off . The LED in the button ill u­
m inates when the memory function is
sw itched off . Seating profiles are neither
stored nor recalled.
Storing a seating profile
• Press the ISET I button. When the word SET
lights up, the memory is ready to store set­
tings.
• Press a memory button briefly. A tone con­
firms that the settings were stored.
Accessing a seating profile
• If the driver's door is open and the ignition
is swi tched off, press t he memory b utton.
• If the driver's door is closed or the ignition is
sw itched on, press and ho ld the memory
button until the seat adjustment is com­
plete.
A WARNING
- For safety reasons, the sea t setting
should only be recalled when the veh icle
is stationary - o therw ise y ou risk hav ing
an acc ident.
- I f necessary, you stop th e process by
press ing the
jOFF ! butt on o r any o f the
memory buttons.

Starting the engine

when starting the engine for diesel vehicles
in colder temperatures. Therefore, you must
hold the brake pedal down until the engine

If the engine should not start immedi ately,
the starting process is automatically stopped
after a short time . Repeat starting procedure.

A WARNING
- Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation .
- Never turn off the engine until the vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop.
- The brake booster and power steering
only work when the engine is running.
If
the engine is off, you have to use more
force when steering or braking. Because
you cannot steer and brake as you usual­
ly would, this could lead to crashes and
serious injuries.
-Avoid high engine rpm, full throttle and
heavy engine loads until the engine has
reached operating temperature - other­
wise you risk engine damage.
- The engine cannot be started by pushing
or towing the vehicle.
(D Tips
-After a cold engine is started, there may
be a brief period of increased noise be­
cause oil pressure must first build up in
the hydraulic valve adjusters. This is nor­ mal and not a cause for concern.
- If you leave the vehicle with the ignition
switched on, the ignition will switch off

when that happens.

Steering lock
The steer ing locks when you turn the engine
off using the
I STAR T ENGINE STOP I button
and open the driver's door. The locked steer­ ing helps prevent vehicle theft.
Emergency off
If necessary, the engine can be switched off
with the selector lever in the R or D/S posi ­
tion. The engine stops if you press the
I START ENGINE STOPI button at speeds below
6 mph (10 km/h).
A WARNING
-Never turn off the engine until the vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop.
- The brake booster and power steering
only work when the engine is running. If
the engine is off, you have to use more
force when steering or braking. Because
you cannot steer and brake as you usual­
ly would, this could lead to crashes and
serious injuries.
- For safety reasons, you should always
park your vehicle with the selector lever
in P. Otherwise, the vehicle could inad­
vertently roll away.
- After the engine has been switched off,
the radiator fan can continue to run for
up to 10 minutes -even with the ignition
switched off.

after some time if the coolant tempera­
ture rises as the result of a heat buildup

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

.. With the ignit ion sw itched on, step on the
brake pedal or the accelerator pedal and
press the sw itch<®> at the same time to re­
lease the parking brake. The indicator lights
in the switch and. (USA models) . (Can­
ada models) in the instrument cluster go
out .
Your vehicle is equipped with an electrome­
chanica l parking brake. The parking brake is
designed to prevent the vehicle from rolling unintentionally and replaces the hand brake .
In addition to the norma l functions of a tradi­
tional hand brake, the electromechanical parking brake provides various convenience
and safety functions.

When starting from rest
- The integral start ing assist helps you when
driving by automatically re leasing the park­
ing brake c>

-When start ing on inclines, the starting as­
sist p revents the vehicle from unintentiona l­
ly rolling back. The braking force of the
parking brake is not re leased until sufficient
driving force has been built up at the
wheels.
Emergency brake function
An emergency brake ensures that the vehicle
can be slowed down even if the
normal brakes

A WARNING
Do not press the accelerator pedal inadver­
tently if the veh icle is stationary but the
engine is running and a gear is selected .
Otherwise th e vehicle w ill start to move
immediately and could result in a crash.
@ Tips
- If the parking brake is applied with the
ignition switched
off, the indicator lights
in the switch and. (USA models)/ •
(Canada models) in the instrument clus­
t er w ill go out after a certain period of
time.
- Occasional noises when the parking
brake is applied and released are normal
and are not a cause fo r concern.
- When the vehicle is pa rked, the parking
brake goes through a self-test cycle at
regu lar intervals. Any associated noises
are normal.

Cruise control
Switching on

The cruise control system makes it possible to
drive at a constant speed starting at 20 mph
(30 km/h).

A WARNING
--Always pay attent ion to traffic even when
the cruise co ntrol is switched on . You are
always responsib le for your speed and
the distance between your veh icle and
other veh icles .
- For safety reasons, the cruise cont ro l
should not be used in t he city, in stop­
a nd -go traffi c, on twisting roads and
when road con ditions are poor (such as
ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and hydro ­
p la ni ng) -risk of accident .
- Tu rn off the cruise co ntro l temporarily
when entering turn la nes , highway exit
lanes or in constr uction zones .
- Please note that inadve rtently "res ting"
your foot on the accelerator pedal causes the cruise control not to brake . This is
because the cruise control is overridden by the driver's acceleration.
- If a brake system malfunction s uch as
overheating occurs when the cruise con­
trol system is switched on, the braking
function in the system may be sw itched
off . The other c ruise control functions re­
main act ive as long as the indicato r light

Changing speed
