Adjusting the height
The height of the display can be a djus ted to

In the MMI, you ca n specify which information
should be displayed :
- Cruise contro l system*
- Navigatio n information*
- A udi adaptive cruise control *
- Audi a ct ive lane assist*
- Night vis ion assistant*
The speed display and some of the red indica­ tor lights cannot be hidden in the MMI.
Display brightness
You can ad just the display brightness in t he
MMI. The display brightness decreases auto­
mat ica lly as the amount of light decreases.
The basic leve l of brightness is adjusted with
the ins trumen t illum ina tion ¢
page 46 .

To prevent sc ratches on t he g lass covering
the Head-up Disp lay, do not place any ob­
jects in the proj ection opening.
(D Tips
- Sung lasses w ith polar izat ion fi lters an d
unfavorable lighting condit ions can af­
fect the display.

Head-up Display funct io n.

On-Board Diagnostic
system (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL )
The Ma lfunction Indicator Lamp ( MIL ) ¢'4 in
the instr ument cluster is part of the On-Board
Diagnostic (OBD II) system .
T he wa rni ng/indicator light ill uminates when
the ignit io n is switched on and goes out after
the engine sta rts and the id le has stab ilized.
This indicates that the MIL is working proper­
ly .
If the light does not go out afte r th e en gine
is started, or illuminates while you are dr iv­
ing, a mal function may exist in the engine sys ­
tem.
If the lig ht illum inates, the catalyt ic con­
verter could be damaged .
Contin ue driving
with reduced power (avoid­
ing s ustained high speeds and/or rapid accel­
erations) and have the cond ition corrected.
Contact your aut horized Audi dea ler.
If the light illuminates, the e lectronic speed
limiter may also be malfunct ioning . For more
information
c> page 30, Electronic speed
limiter.
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also
cause the MIL light to illuminate

dations
Why is your seat adjustment so
important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can
only provide maximum protection if the front
seats are correctly adjusted.
There are various ways of adjust ing the front
seats to provide safe and comfortable support
for the driver and the front passenger . Adjust
you r seat prope rly so that :
- you can easily and quick ly reach all the
switches and controls in the instrument
panel
-your body is prope rly supported thus reduc­
ing physical stress and fatigue
- the safety be lts and a irbag system can offer
maximum protection

In the following sec tions, you will see exactly
how you can best adjust you r seats .
There are special regulations and instructions
for insta lling a child seat on the front pas­
senger's seat. Always fo llow the information
regarding ch ild safety provided in
q page 171, Child Safety .
A WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the dr iver and
all other passengers can result in serious
personal in jury.
- Always keep your feet on the floor when
the vehicle is in motion -never p ut your
feet on top of the instrument panel, out
of the w indow or on top of the seat cush­
ion . Th is applies especially to the passen­
gers .
If your seating position is incorrect,
yo u increase the r isk of injury in the case
of sudden braking or an a ccident.
If t h e
a ir bag infla tes and the se ating position
is inco rre ct, this could resul t in personal
injury o r even death.
- It is import ant for both the driver an d
front passenger to keep a distance of at least 10 inches (25 cm) between them­
selves and the steering wheel and/or in­
strument panel. If you're s itting any
closer than th is, the a irbag system can­
not protect you properly . In addition, the
front seats and head restraints must be
adjusted to your body height so that they
can give you max imum protect ion.
- Always try to keep as much distance as
possible between yourself and the steer­
ing wheel o r inst rument pane l.
- Do not adjust the driver's o r front pas­
senger's seat whi le the vehicle is moving.
Your sea t may move unexpected ly, caus­
ing sudden loss of vehicle cont rol and
personal injury . If yo u adjust yo ur seat
while the veh icle is moving, yo u are out
of posit ion.
Driver's seat '
The correct seat position is important for safe
and relaxed driving.
We recommend tha t you adjus t the dr iver's
seat in the fo llowing manner :
.,. Adjust t he seat in fore and aft direction so
t ha t you can eas ily push the peda ls to the
floor w hile keeping your knees sl igh tly bent

.. Adjust the backrest so that when you sit
w ith your back against t he backrest, you can
still grasp the top of the steering wheel.
.. For adjustab le head restra ints: adjust the
head restra int so the upper edge is as eve n
as poss ible with the top of your head. If that
is not possible, try to adjust the head re­
s train t so that it is as cl ose to this position
as poss ible

A WARNING
-
Never place any objects in the dr iver's foot-
well. An object could get into the pedal
area and interfere with pedal function . In

case of sudden braking or an accident, you
would not be ab le to brake or accelerate.
Front passenger's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into the r earmost position.
To avo id contact with the airbag whi le it is de­
p loying, do not sit a ny closer to the inst ru­
ment panel than necessary and always wear
the three-point safety be lt provided adjusted
correctly . We recommend that you adjust the
passenger's seat in the following manner :
• Br ing the backr est up to an (a lmost) upright
position. Do not ride with the seat reclined.
• For adjustable head restraints : adjust the
head restrain t so the upper edge is as even
as possible with the top of your head . If that
is not poss ible, try to adjust the head re­
stra int so that it is as close to th is position
as possible ¢

- Be careful when ad justing the seat
height. Check to see t hat no one is in the
way, or serious injury cou ld result!
- Because the seats can be e lectrically ad­
justed with the ignition off, never leave
children unattended in the veh icle. Unsu ­
pervised use of the electric seat adjust­
ments may cause serious injury .
- To reduce the risk of injury in the case of sudden braking or accident, front pas­
sengers must never r ide in a moving ve­
hicle with the bac krest reclined. Safety
be lts and the airbag system on ly offer
maximum protection when the backrest
is upr ight and the safety belts are prop­
erly positioned on the body . The more
the backrest is reclined, the greater the
risk of personal injury from an incorrect
seating position and improperly posi­
tioned safety belts .

- Always hold the ste ering whee l w ith your
hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock posi­
tions to reduce the ris k of persona l injury
if the driver's airbag dep loys .
- N ever hold the stee ring wheel at the 12
o' clock posi tion or wi th your hands ins ide
the stee rin g wheel rim or on t he steering
wheel h ub. Holding the steering whee l
the wrong way can cause se rious injuries
to the hands, arms and head if the driv­
er's airbag deploys.

Engine sound*
The sou nd of the engine is adapted to these­
lec ted mode and ranges from subtle to sporty.

- Make sure there is eno ugh clearance
above and below the veh icle when park­
i ng. The height of the vehicle can change
once it is parked due to temperature
fluctuations, changes to the load condi ­
tions and changes to the driving modes,
which can affect clearance.
- When transporting the vehicle on a car
carrier, train, ship or by other means, on­
ly tie the vehicle down at the running
surface of the tires, which is the outer
circumference. Secur ing the vehicle at
the axle components, suspension struts
or tow ing eyes is not permitted because
the pressure in the air suspension struts
can change d uring transpor t. The vehicle
may not be sec ured s uff icient ly if this
happens.
- If you are going to tow a trailer, you
must activate the trailer ope rat ion mode
¢page 205 .
@ Tips
-In some mode ls, the m axim um vehicle
speed can on ly be reached in the Auto
and Dynami c modes.
- Se lecting the Dynami c mode results in
sporty shifting characteristics . The S
gear position engages automatically .
- In vehicles with sport differential*, the
D ynamic mode is deactivated when tow ­
ing a trai ler .
- In vehicles that have dynamic steering*,
operating noise is heard when starting or

stopping the engine. This does not indi ­
cate a prob lem .
Selecting the driving mode
You con choose between Comfort, Auto, Dy­
namic and Individual.

You can c hange the driving mode when the ve­
hicle is stationary or whi le driving. If traffic
permits, after changing modes, briefly take
your foot off the acce lerator pedal so that the
recently selected mode is also activated for
the engine .
Comfo rt -provides a comfort-oriented vehicle
setup and is suited fo r long drives on high­
ways .
Auto -provides an overall comfortable yet dy­
namic dr iving feel and is suited for every day
use.
D ynamic -gives the driver a sporty driving
feel and is suited to a sporty driv ing style .

tips, instructions and warnings that you need
to read and observe for your own safety, the
safety of your passengers and others . We have
summarized here what you need to know
about safety belts, a irbags, ch ild restra ints as
well as child safety. Your safety is for us
priori­
ty number 1.
Always observe the info rmat ion
and warn ings in th is sect ion -fo r yo ur own
safety as well as that of your passengers .
The information in this se ction app lies to all
model ve rsions of your veh icle . Some of the
feat ures described in this sec tions may be
standard equipment on some models, or may
be optional equipment on others . If you are
not sure, ask your authorized Audi dealer.
A WARNING
- Always make sure that you follow the in­
struct ions and heed the WARNINGS in
this Manual. It is in your interest and in
the inte rest of you r passengers.
- Always keep the complete Owner's Liter­
ature in your Audi when you lend or sell
your vehicle so that this important info r­

The safety features are part of the occupant
restraint system and work together to help
redu ce the risk of injury in a wide variety of
accident situations.
Your safety and the safety of your passenge rs
should not be left to chance. Advances in
technology have made a varie ty o f fea tures
avai la bl e to he lp re duce the risk of injury in an accident
. The following is a list of just a few of
the safety features in your Audi:

Use the height adjustment to change the posi­
tion of the shoulder belt of the front safety
belts .

Improperly positioned safety belts can
cause serious personal injury in an acci­
dent.

- The shoulder belt should lie as close to
the center of the collar bone as possible
and should fit well on the body. Hold the
belt above the latch tongue and pull it
even ly ac ross the chest so that it sits as
low as possible on the pelvis and there is
no pressure on the abdomen. The be lt

- A loose-fitt ing safety be lt can cause seri­
o us injuries by shifting its position on
yo ur body from the strong bones to more

The best way to protect the fetus is to make
sure that expectant mothers always wear

Adjusting safety belt height
With the aid of the safety belt height adjust­
ment, the three point safety belt strap rout­
ing can be fitted to the shoulder area, accord ­
ing to body size .

Improperly worn safety belts
Incorrectly positioned safety belts can cause
severe injuries .
Wearing safety belts improperly can cause se­
rious injury or death. Safety belts can o nly
work when they are correctly positioned on
the body . Improper seat ing pos itions reduce
the effectiveness of safety belts and will even
i ncrease t he risk of inju ry and death by mov­
ing the safety be lt to crit ica l areas o f the
body. Improper seating positions also in­
crease the risk of serious injury and death
when an airbag deploys and strikes an occu­
pant who is not in the correct seating posi­
tion. A driver is respons ible for the safety of
all veh icle occupants and especially for chil­
dren . Therefore:

tions must be observed. Your authorized

Other things that can affect Advanced
Airbag performance
Changing the vehicle's suspension system can
change the way that the Advanced Airbag Sys­
tem performs in a crash. For example, using
tire-r im combinations not approved by Aud i,
lowering the vehicle, changing the stiffness of
the suspension, including the springs, suspen­
sion st ruts, shock absorbers etc. can change
the forces that are measured by the a irbag
sensors and se nt to the electron ic control
un it. Some suspension changes can, for exam­
p le, increase the force levels meas ured by the
sensors and make the airbag system deploy in
crashes in which it would not deploy if the
changes had not been made. Other kinds of
changes may reduce the force levels meas­ ured by the sensors and prevent the a irbag
from deploying when it should.
A WARNING
Changing the vehicle's suspension includ­
ing use of unapproved tire -rim combina­
tions can change Advan ced A irbag per­
formance and increase the risk of serio us
personal in jury in a crash.
- Never install suspension components
that do not have the same performance character istics as the components origi­
nally installed on your vehicle.
- Never use tire-rim combinatio ns that
have not been approved by A udi.
Knee airbags
Description of knee airbags
Applies to vehicles: with knee airbags
The knee airbag system can provide supple­
mental protection to properly restrained
front seat occupants.

el underneat h the glove compartment.
T he knee airbag offe rs additional p rotection
to the driver 's and passenger's knees and up­
per and lower th igh areas and supplements
the protection provided by the safety belts.
If t he front airbags dep loy , the knee ai rbags
also dep loy in frontal coll isions when the de­
ployment threshold stored in the contro l unit
is met

In addition to their norma l safety function,
safety belts help keep the dr iver or front pas­
senger in position in a fronta l collision so that
the a irbags can provide supplemental protec­
t ion .
The airbag system is not a substit ute for your
safety belt. Rather, it is part of the overa ll oc­
cupant restra int system in your vehicle. Al­
ways remember that the a irbag system can
o nly help to protect you if you are weari ng
your safety belt and wea ring i t properly. This
is why you should always wear your safety
belt, not just beca use the law requi res you to
do so
