A WARNING
- Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation .
- Never turn off the eng ine unti l the vehi­

- The brake booster and power steer ing
only work when the engine is running .
If
the engine is off, you have to use more
force when steering or braking. Because
you cannot stee r and brake as you usua l­
ly wou ld, this could lead to crashes and
ser ious injur ies.
- Avoid high engine rpm, fu ll throttle and
heavy engine loads unti l the engine has
reached operating temperat ure - ot her­
wise yo u risk eng ine dam age.
- The eng ine ca nnot be started by pushing
or tow ing the veh icle.

- After a cold engine is sta rted, there may
be a brief period of increased noise be ­
ca use oil p ress ure mus t fi rs t bu ild up in
the hyd raulic valve adjus ters. This is nor ­
mal and not a ca use for concern .

Steering lock
The steer ing locks when you tur n the engine
off using the
I STAR T ENGINE ST OP I button
and open the d river's door . The locked steer­
ing helps prevent vehicle theft.
Eme rgency off
If necessa ry, the engine can be switched off
with the selector lever in the R or D/S posi ­
t ion . The engine stops if you press the
I S TART ENG INE STOPI button at speeds below
6 mph (10 km/h) .
A WARNING
-Never tur n off the engine unti l the vehi ­
cle has come to a complete stop .
- T he b rake booster and powe r stee ring

is depressed.
Ill Is key in the vehicle?
If the indicator light turns on and the mes­
sage appears, the remote control key was re­
moved from the vehicle while the engine was
running . If the ignition key is not in the vehi­
cle you will not be ab le to switch on the igni­
tion or restart the engine after it has been
switched off. You w ill also not be able to lock
the vehicle from the outside .
Shift to P, otherwise vehicle can roll away.
Doors do not lock if lever is not in P.
This message appears for sa fe ty reasons
a long with an audib le warning tone if the P
selector lever position is not engaged when

This message appears if the driver's door is
opened wh ile the ignition is switched on and
the selec tor lever is not in the P position. Shift
the selec tor lever into the P position and

cle. Otherwise the vehicle could roll . See also

Starting the engine if there is a
malfunction
It may not be possible to start the engine un­
der cer tain circums tances, for example if the
ba ttery in the vehicle key is drained, if in ter­
ference hos affected the key or if there is a
system malfunction .

-When you leave your vehi cle -even if on­
ly brief ly -always take the ignition key
with yo u. This applies par ticu larly when
children remain in the veh icle. Otherw ise
the ch ildren could start the engine, re­
lease the parking brake or operate elec­
trical equipment (e.g. power windows) .
There is the risk of an accident.
- When the vehicle is locked, no one -par­
t icularly not children should remain in
the vehicle. Loc ked doors make it more
difficult for emergency wor kers to get in­
to the vehicle - putt ing lives at risk.
Starting from rest
The starting assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon starting.
Stopping and applying parking brake
" Pull the switch ID to apply the park ing
brake.
St arting and automa tically relea sing the
parking brake
.. When you start to drive as usua l, the park­
ing brake is automatically released and you r
vehicle begins to move.
When stopp ing at a traff ic signa l or stopp ing
in city traffic, the parking brake can be ap­
plied . The veh icle does not have to be held
with the footbrake. The par king brake elimi­
nates the tendency to c reep with a drive range
engaged. As soon as you dr ive
off as usua l,
the park ing brake is released automatically
and the vehicle starts to move.
Starting on slopes
When sta rt ing on in cl ines, the starting ass ist
p revents the veh icle from uninten tionally ro ll­
ing bac k. The braking force o f the parking
brake is not released un til sufficient dr iving
force has been b uilt up at the whee ls.
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the parking bra ke is re­
l eased automatically only when the driv­
er's safety belt is engaged in the buckle.
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an
incline, do the following:
.. Keep the sw itch(®) pulled and depress the
accelerator. The pa rking bra ke stays applied
and prevents the vehicle from roll ing back­
ward.
" You can release the switch© once you are
sure that you are developing enough for­
wa rd momentum at the wheels as you de­
press the acce lerator.
Depend ing on the we ight of the rig (vehicle
and trailer) and the severity of the incline, you
may roll backwards as you start. You can p re­
vent rolling backwa rds by holdi ng the par king
brake switch (®) pulled o ut and ac celera ting -
j u st as you wou ld w hen s tarti ng on a hill wi th
a conventiona l hand brake.
Emergency braking
In the event that the conven tional brake sys­
tem fails or locks.
"I n an emergency, pull the switch(®) and
cont inue to pull it to slow your ve hicl e down
w ith the par king b rake.
" As soon as you re lease the swi tch (®) or ac -
celerate, the braking process stops.
If you p ull the swi tc h (®) a nd hold it above a
speed of about 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergen­
cy braking f unction is initiated. The ve hicle is
braked at all four whee ls by activating the hy­
draulic brake system. The brake performance
is similar to making an emergency stop¢&..
In order not to activate the emergency brak-
ing by mistake, an audib le warning tone (buz ­
zer) sounds when the switch(®) is pulled. As ..,.

If you select the R position during a Stop
phase, the eng ine will start aga in.
Shift from
D to P quickly to prevent the engine
from starting unintentionally when shifting
through
R.
You can determ ine for yourself if the eng ine
will stop or not by reduc ing or increasing the
amount of force you use to press the brake
pedal. For example , if you only lightly press
on the brake pedal in stop-and and-go traff ic
or when turning, the engine will not switch off
when the vehicle is stationary . As soon as you
press the brake down harder, the eng ine will
switch off.
General information
Applies to vehicles: with Start-Stop-System
The standard Start-Stop-mode can be cancel­
led for different system-related reasons .

Engine will not switch off
Before each stop phase, the system checks i f
certain cond it ions have been met. For exam ·
p le, the engine will
not be switched off in the
following situations:
- T he eng ine has not reached the minimum
required temperature for Start-Stop-mode .
- The inter ior temperature selected by the A/C
system has not been reached .
- T he outside temperature is extremely high/
low .
- T he w indshield is being defrosted

- The parking system* is switched on.
- The battery charge level is too low.
- The steering wheel is sharply turned or
there is a steering movement.
- After engaging the reverse gear .
- On sharp inclines.
The

Engine automatically restarts
The stop phase is interrupted in the following
situations, for example. The engine restarts
without any action by the driver .
- The interior temperature varies from the
temperature selected in the A/C system .
- The windshie ld is being defrosted
<:!;>page 71, ¢page 73.
-The brake pedal is pressed several times in a
row .
- The battery charge level becomes too low.
- High power consumption.
Switching the ignition off automatically
To prevent the battery from drain ing, the igni­
tion w ill switch off
automatically when all of
the following conditions have been met :
- The vehicle has already been driven.
- The engine has been turned off by the Start-
Stop -System*.
- The driver's door is opened.
- The driver's seat belt is removed .
- The brake pedal is not pressed down.
- The vehicle is stationary .
In this case, the activated low beam will be re­
placed by the side marker lights. The side
marker lights will switch off afte r approxi ­
mately
30 minutes o r when you lock the veh i­
cle.
If the Start-Stop System has
not turned off
the engine or if you have sw itched the Start­
Stop system off manually, the ignition will
not
be automat ically switched off and the eng ine
will continue to ru n

A time delay element prevents the selector
lever from locking when it is moved through
the N position (going from R to 0/5). The lock­
ing element will lock the selector lever if the
lever is left in N (Neutral) for more than ap­
prox imately 2 second, without the brake ped ­
al being pressed.
Release button
The release button on the selector lever pre­
vents the lever from being accidenta lly shifted
into certain positions. Depending on the direc­
tion of the shift, the selector lever locks at d if­
ferent positions . The positions a re highlighted
in the illustration

temporar ily to the manual shift program in or­
der to adjust the gears to the driving condi­
tions by hand

A WARNING
To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas
from being drawn into the vehicle, always keep the rear lid closed while driving .
- Never transport objects larger than
those fitting completely into the luggage
area because the rear lid cannot be fully
closed.
- If you absolutely must drive with the rear
lid open, observe the following notes to
reduce the risk of poisoning:
- Close all windows,
- Close the power roof*,
- Open all air outlets in the instrument
panel,
- Switch off the air recirculation,
- Set the fresh air fan to the highest
speed.
A WARNING
Always make sure that the doors, all win­ dows, the power roof* and the rear lid are
securely closed and locked to reduce the
risk of injury when the vehicle is not being
used.
- After closing the rear lid, always make
sure that it is properly closed and locked.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended es­
pecially with the rear lid left open. A
child could crawl into the vehicle through
the luggage compartment and close the
rear lid becoming trapped and unable to
get out. Being trapped in a vehicle can
lead to serious personal injury.
- Never let children play in or around the
vehicle .
- Never let passengers ride in the luggage
compartment. Vehicle occupants must
always be properly restrained in one of
the vehicle's seating positions.
Gj) Tips
-Air circulation helps to reduce window fogging. Stale air escapes to the outside
through vents in the trim panel. Be sure
to keep these slots free and open .

-The tire pressure must correspond to the
load. The tire pressure is shown on the
tire pressure label. The tire pressure la­
bel is located on the driver's side B-pillar.
The tire pressure label lists the recom­
mended cold tire inflation pressures for
the vehicle at its maximum capacity
weight and the tires that were on your
vehicle at the time it was manufactured. For recommended tire pressures for nor­
mal load conditions, please see chapter
~page 247.
Tie-downs
The luggage compartment is equipped with
four tie-downs to secure luggage and other
items.
Use the tie-downs to secure your cargo prop­
erly<>
page 134, Loading the luggage com­
partment.
In a collision, the laws of physics mean that
even smaller items that are loose in the vehi­
cle will become heavy missiles that can cause
serious injury. Items in the vehicle possess en­
ergy which vary with vehicle speed and the
weight of the item. Vehicle speed is the most
significant factor.
For example , in a frontal collision at a speed
of 30 mph (48 km/h), the forces acting on a 10-lb (4.5 kg) object are about 20 times the
normal weight of the item. This means that
the weight of the item would suddenly be about 200 lbs. (90 kg) . You can imagine the
injuries that a 200 lbs . (90 kg) item flying
freely through the passenger compartment
could cause in a collision like this.
A WARNING
Weak, damaged or improper straps used
to secure items to tie-downs can fail dur­
ing hard braking or in a collision and cause
serious personal injury.

chapters that make up the owner's literature.
Please be sure to heed the WARNINGS -they
are extremely important for your safety and
the safety of your passengers, especially in ­
fants and small children.
A WARNING
Never rely on airbags alone for protection.
- Even when they deploy, airbags provide only supplemental protection .
- Airbag work most effectively when used
with properly worn safety belts.
- Therefore, always wear your safety belts
and make sure that everybody in your ve­
hicle is properly restrained .
- Always hold the steering wheel with both
hands on the outside of the steering
wheel rim at the 9:00 o'clock and 3:00
o'clock positions to help reduce the risk
of personal injury if the driver's airbag in­
flates.
- Never hold the steering wheel at the 12
o'clock position or with your hands any­
where inside the steering wheel or on the
steering wheel hub. Holding the steering
wheel the wrong way increases the risk of severe injury to the arms, hands, and
head if the driver airbag deploys.
A WARNING
Objects between you and the airbag will
increase the risk of injury in a crash by in­
terfering with the way the airbag unfolds
and/or by being pushed into you as the air­
bag inflates.
-Always make sure nothing is in the front
airbag deployment zone that could be
struck by the airbag when it inflates.
- Objects in the zone of a deploying airbag
can become projectiles when the airbag
deploys and cause serious personal in­
Jury.
- Never hold things in your hands or on
your lap when the vehicle is in use .
-
-Never place accessories or other objects
(such as cup holders, telephone brackets,
note pads, navigation systems, or things
that are large, heavy, or bulky) on the
doors; never attach then to the doors or
the windshield; never place them over or
near or attach them to the area marked
.,AIRBAG" on the steering wheel, instru­
ment panel or the seat backrests; never place them between these areas and you
or any other person in the vehicle.
- Never attach objects to the windshield
above the passenger front airbag, such
as accessory GPS navigation units or mu­
sic players. Such objects could cause seri­
ous injury in a collision, especially when
the airbags inflate.
- Never recline the front passenger seat to
transport objects. Items can also move
into the deployment area of the side air­
bags or the front airbag during breaking
or in a sudden maneuver. Objects near
the airbags can fly dangerously through
the passenger compartment and cause
injury, particularly when the seat is re­
clined and the airbags inflate.
A WARNING
A person on the front passenger seat, es­
pecially infants and small children, will re­
ceive serious injuries and can even be kil­
led by being too close to the airbag when
it inflates.
- Although the Advanced Airbag System in
your vehicle is designed to turn off the front passenger airbag if an infant or a
small child is on the front passenger
seat, nobody can absolutely guarantee
that deployment under these special
conditions is impossible in all conceiva­
ble situations that may happen during
the useful life of your vehicle.
- The Advanced Airbag System can deploy
in accordance with the ,,low risk" option
for 3- and 6-year-old children under the

rearward-facing or forward-facing chi ld re­
straints listed in Federa l Motor Vehicle Safe­
ty Standard 208 w ith which the Advanced
Airbag System in your vehicle was certif ied.
I f the front passenger seat is not occupied,
the front airbag will not deploy, and the PAS­
SENGER AIR BAG OF F light w ill stay on. Nev­
er insta ll a rearward-fac ing ch ild restra int on
the front passenger seat, the safest place for
a child in any kind of child restraint is at o ne
of the seating positions on the rear seat

If the PASSENGER AIR BAG light comes
on ...
If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes
on when one of the cond itions l isted above is
met, be sure to check the light regularly to
make certain that the PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF light stays on continuo usly whenever the
ignition is on.
If the PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF light does not appear on and does not
stay on all the time, stop as soon as it is safe
to do so and
- reactivate the system by turning the ignition
off for more than 4 seconds and then turn­ ing it on again;
- remove and reinstall the chi ld restraint .
Make sure that the child restraint is properly
installed and that the safety belt for the
front passenger seat has been correctly routed through the child restraint as descri­
bed in the chi ld restraint manufactu rer's in­
structions;
- make sure that the convert ible locking re­
t ractor on t he safety be lt for the front pas­
senger seat has been act ivate d and that the
sa fety belt has been pulled tight .
- make su re that no electr ica l device (such as
a laptop, CD player, elect ro nic games devi ce,
power inverter or seat heater for chi ld seats)
is p laced or used on the front passenge r
seat if the device is connected to the 12-volt
socket or the c igarette lighter socket;

- make sure that no seat heater has been ret­
rofitted o r otherwise added to the front pas ­
senge r seat;
- make sure that nothing can interfere with
the safety belt buck les and that they are not
obstructed;
- make sure t hat there are no wet objects
(such as a wet towe l) and no water or other
liquids on the front passenger seat cushion .
If the PASSENGER AIR BAG light still
do es not c ome on ...
If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light still
does not come on and does not stay on con­
ti nuously (when the ignition is switched on),
- take the child restraint off the front passen -
ger seat and install it proper ly at one of the
rear seat positions. Have the airbag system
inspected by your Audi dealer immed iate ly.
- move the child to a rear seat position and
make sure that the c hild is properly restra in­
ed in a ch ild restra int that is appropriate for
its size and age.
Th e PASSENGER AIR BAG light should
NOT come on .. .
The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light should
NOT come on when the ignit io n is on and an
adult is s itting in a proper seating posit ion on
the front passenge r seat. If the PASSENGER
AIR BAG OFF light comes on and stays on o r
fla shes for about S seconds wh ile d riving, un­
der these c ircumstances, make sure that:
- the adult on the front passenge r seat is
p rope rly seated on the ce nte r of the sea t
cushion with his or her back u p ag ainst the
backrest and the backrest is not re clined,
- t he adult is not tak ing we ight off the sea t by
holding on to the passenger assis t handle
above the fron t passenger door or s upport ­
ing their weight on the armrest,
- the sa fe ty belt is being proper ly wo rn and
that the re is not a lot of s lack in the safety
be lt webbing,
- t here are no aftermar ket seat covers o r
cushions or other things (s uch as blankets)
on the front passenger seat that might
cause the capacitive passenger detect ion

the convertible locking retractor on the

A toddler or child is usually too large for an in ­
fant restraint if it is more than one year o ld
and weighs more than 20 lbs. (9 kg) .
Todd lers and c hildren who are older than one
year up to abo ut 4 years o ld and weigh more
than 20 lbs (9 kg) up to 40 lbs. (18 kg) must always be properly restra ined in a ch ild safety
seat certified for the ir s ize and weight
¢ fig . 173 and ¢ fig . 174 .
The airbag on the passenger side makes the
front seat a poten tially dangerous place for a
chi ld to r ide . The front seat is not the safest
place for a ch ild in a forward-fac ing ch ild safe­
ty seat .
It is a very dange rous p lace for an in­
fant or a la rger chi ld in a rearwa rd-fa cing seat.
A WARNING
Not using a ch ild safety se at, using the
w rong chi ld safety seat or improper ly in­
stalling a child res traint increases the risk
of se rious personal injury and death in a
co llision or other emergency s ituation.
- Children on the front seat of any car,
even with Advanced Ai rbags, can be seri­
ous ly injured or even killed when an a ir­
bag inf lates. A child in a rearward-facing
child safety seat installed on the front
passenge r seat w ill be seriously injured
and can be ki lled if the front ai rbag in-

- The inflating airbag will hit the child
safety seat or infant carrier with great
force and will smash the child safety seat
and child against the backrest , center
arm rest, door or roof.
- Always install rear-fac ing ch ild safety
seats on the rear seat .
- If you must install a rearward fac ing
child safety seat on the front passenger
seat because of exceptional c ircumstan­
ces and the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
light does not come on and stay on, im­
mediately ins ta ll t he rear-fac ing ch ild
s afety sea t in a rear se ating position and
have the airbag system inspected by your
Aud i dea le r.
- Th e rear side o f the child sa fety seat
should be pos itione d as close as possi ble
to the backrest on the vehicle seat.
- For ad justab le head restra ints: adjust or
remove the rear seat hea d restraint if it
is difficult to install the child seat with
the head restraint in place

If exceptional circumstances require the
use of a forward -facing child restraint on
the front passenger's seat, the child's safe­
ty and we ll-being require that the follow­
ing spec ial precautions be taken:
- Make sure the forward-facing seat has been designed and certified by its manu­
facturer for use on a front seat with a passenger front and side airbag .

Refuelling procedure
.. Inse rt the fue l nozzle from the gasoline
pump into the fue l filler neck as far as it will
go.
.. Se lect a medium refuelling rate so that the
no zzle switches off automatica lly when the
tank is full.
Putting the fuel cap back on
.. After filling your tank, twist the fuel fi ller
cap clockwise as far as it will go.
.. Close the fuel filler flap.
To avoid fuel spi lling or evaporating from the
fuel tank always close fuel fi ller cap properly
and completely. An improperly closed fuel fill­
er cap may a lso cause the MIL lamp

to come on.
A WARNING
Improper refueling or handling of fue l can
cause fire, explosion and severe burns .
- Fuel is highly flammable and can cause
severe burns and other injuries.
- Failure to shut the engine off while refu­
eling and/or to insert the pump nozzle
fully into the fuel filler neck could cause
fuel to spray out of filler neck or to over­
flow. Fuel spray and overflow ing fuel can
c ause a fi re.
- Never use a cellular telephone wh ile re­
fueling. The electromagnetic radiation
can cause sparks that can ign ite fue l va­
pors and cause a fire.
- Never get back into you r vehicle while re­
fueling. If in exceptiona l circumstances
yo u must get back in your vehicle whi le
refue ling, make certain that you close
the door and touch metal to discharge
static electricity before touching the fill­
er nozzle again. Static electricity can
cause sparks that can ignite fuel vapors
released during refueling.
- Never smoke or have an open flame any­
where in or near your vehicle when refu ­
eling or filling a portable fuel container .
- For your safety, we strongly recommend
that you do not travel w ith a portable fuel container in your vehicle. The con­
tainer, full or empty may leak and could
cause a fire, especially in a crash.
- If, under exceptional circumstances, you
must transport a portable fuel container,
please observe the following:
- Never fill a portable fuel container
whi le it is anywhere in or on the vehicle
(for example, in the luggage compa rt­
ment, or on the trunk) . Static electrici­
ty can build up while filling and can ig­
nite fuel vapors causing a fire.
- Always place a portab le fue l container
on the ground before fi lling.
- Always keep the filler nozzle complete­
ly inside the portab le container before
and during filling.
- If filling a portab le container made of
metal, the f iller nozzle must always be
in contact with the container. This will
help prevent static electricity from d is­
c harging and cause a fire.
- Never spill fuel inside the vehicle or
luggage compartment. Fuel vapors are
highly flammable .
- Always observe local and state/provin­
cial laws regarding the use, storage
and transportation of fuel containers .
- Make certain the fuel container meets
industry standards (ANSI/ ASTM
F852 -86) .

If any fuel has spilled onto the car, it
should be removed immediately to prevent
damage to the paint .

As soon as the correctly operated no zzle
switches off automatically for the first
time, the tank is full. Do not try to add
more fuel because fuel may spill out . In
addition, the expansion space in the fuel
tank will be filled -causing the fuel to
overflow when it becomes warm and pol­
l ute the environment .
