Instruments and indicator lights
-The engine compartment of any motor vehi­
cle is a potentially hazardous area. Before
you check anything in the engine compart­ ment, stop the engine and let it cool down.
Always exercise extreme ca ution when work­
ing under the hood

Some ind icator lights turn on briefly to chec k the
function of that system whe n you swi tch the ign i­
t ion o n. These systems are m ark ed w it h a ../ in
t he fo llowing tables . If one of these indi cator
lights does not tu rn on, there is a malfunction in
that system .

BRAKE /((JJ Brake system
The light illum inates when the ignition is switch­
ed on .
It goes out after the engine has been
started. This indicates t hat the brake war ning
light is f unct ion ing properly.
If th e brak e warning light do es not light up
when the engine i s cranking, th ere may be a
malfun ction in th e elec trical sy stem . In thi s
c ase , conta ct your Audi deal er.
If the brake system warning/indicator light turns
on, there is a brake system malfunction .

- If the ind icator light and the message appear
while d riv ing , the eme rgency braking function
may not be avai lab le . It may not be possib le to
set the park ing brake or re lease it once it has
been set . Seek professiona l assistance.

When the light comes on, a n audible warning sig­
nal is also given.
A WARNING
- Always observe the warn ings in
c::> page 218, before opening the hood and
checking the brake flu id.
- Dr iving with low brake f luid is a safety haz­
ard. Stop the car and get professional assis­
tance .
- If the
1111 (USA models) 8 (Canada mod­
els) brake system indicato r light turns on to­
gethe r with the ABS and ESC indicator
lights, the ABS/ESC regulat ing funct ion may
have fai le d . Fu nctions t hat stabili ze t he ve­
hicle are no longe r avai lable. This could
cause t he ve hicl e to swe rve and inc rease the
ris k of sli ding. Drive carefully to the nearest
author ized Audi dealer or other qualified ..,.

workshop and have the malfunction correct­ed.
- If the brake warning/indicator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the park­
ing brake is released, or lights up while you
are driving, the fluid level in the brake fluid
reservoir is too low. If you believe that it is
safe to do so, proceed immediately at low
speed to the nearest authorized Audi dealer
or qualified repair facility and have the
brake system inspected.
- Always keep in mind that after several brake
applications, you will need greater pressure
on the brake pedal to stop your vehicle. Do
not rely on strained brakes to respond with
maximum stopping power in critical situa­
tions. You must allow for increased braking
distances. The extra distance used up by
fading brakes could lead to an accident.
PARK/( ®) Electromechanical parking brake
The warning/indicator light monitors the elec­
tromechanical parking broke.
If the indicator light- (USA models)/ .
(Canada models) turns on, the parking brake was
set .
- (USA models) • (Canada models) Cau­
tion: Vehicle parked too steep
If the indicator light blinks and the message ap­
pears, there is not enough braking power to keep
the vehicle from rolling. The brakes have over­
heated. The vehicle could roll away even on a
small incline.
Press brake pedal to release parking brake
To release the parking brake, press the brake ped­
al and press the button~ or start driving with
starting assist at the same time ¢
page 79.
Please release parking brake
To release the parking brake manually, press the
brake pedal and press the button
(2) at the same
~ time. The parking brake only releases automati-

Instruments and indicator lights
If the Ill indicator light turns on and this mes­
sage appears, there is a parking brake malfunc­
tion. Drive to your authorized Audi dealer or
qualified workshop immediately to have the mal­
function corrected.
- L Engine cooling system malfunction
A malfunction in the engine cooling system must
be repaired as soon as possible.
• Switch off engine and check coolant level
If the indicator light turns on and the message
appears, the coolant temperature is too high or
the coolant level is too low.

If the engine coolant level is correct, then the ra­
diator fan may be the cause of the malfunction.

gine run with vehicle stationary
If the indicator light turns on and the message
appears, let the engine run at idle for a few mi­
nutes to cool down.

-If your vehicle should break down for me­
chanical or other reasons, park at a safe dis­
tance from moving traffic, turn
off the en­
gine and turn on the hazard warning lights

-Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the engine
compartment - you risk being scalded. Wait
until you can no longer see or hear steam or
coolant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any vehicle is a
dangerous area. Before you perform any
work in the engine compartment, turn of

You can centrally lock and unlock your vehicle and
start the engine w it h the master key with remote
control. A mechanical key is integrated in the re­
mote control key

The emergency key is not intended for constant
use. It shou ld only be used in an emergency.
Keep it in a safe place and do not carry it on your
key ring.
K ey replacement
If you lose a key, contact your authorized A udi
dea ler immediately to have the
lost key disabled.
Be sure to bring all yo ur keys with you.
Personal comfo rt sett ings
If two peop le use one vehicle, i t is recommended
that each person always uses "their own" master
key. Whe n the ignition is switched off or when
the vehicle is locked, personal convenience set ­
tings for the fo llow ing systems are stored and as­
signed to the remote master key.

The stored settings are automatically recalled
when you unlock the vehicle, when you open the
doors or when you switch the ignition on.
A WARNING

- Do not leave your vehicle u nattended. A l­
ways take your ign ition key with you and
lo ck your vehicle. Entry by unau thori zed per­
sons could end anger yo u or res ult in theft or
damage the vehicle .
- Do n ot leave ch ildren unattended in t he ve ­
h icle, especi ally wit h access to vehicle keys.
Ungua rded a ccess to the keys provides chil ­
dren t he opport unity to start the engine
and/or activate ve hicle systems such as the
power windows, etc. Unsupe rv ised ope ra­
tion of any veh icle system by c hildren can
result i n serio us in ju ry .

- The operation o f the remote control key can
be temporarily d is rupted by interference
from transmitters in the vic inity of the vehi­
cle working in the same freque ncy range
(e.g. a cell phone, radio e quipment).
- For security reasons, rep lacement keys are
only ava ilable from Audi dealers .

Lights and Vision
All-weather lights
The front lights are adjusted automatically so
that there is less glare for the driver from his or
her own lights, for example when roads are wet.
Automatic dynamic headlight range control
system
Your vehicle is equipped with a headlight range
control system so that the headlights do not
blind oncoming traffic if the vehicle load
changes. The headlight range also adjusts auto­
matically when braking and accelerating.
Static cornering light*
The static cornering light depends on equipment
and only works when the light switch is in the AU·
TO position. The cornering light switches on au­
tomatically at speeds up to approximately
44 mph (70 km) when the steering wheel is at a
certain angle . The area to the side of the vehicle
is illum inated better when turning.
A WARNING
-Automatic headlights are only intended to
assist the driver. They do not relieve the
driver of responsibility to check the head­
lights and to turn them on manually accord­
ing to the current light and visibility condi ­
tions . For example, fog cannot be detected
by the light sensors. So always switch on the
low beam under these weather conditions
and when driving in the dark fD.
- The rear fog lights should only be turned on
in accordance with traffic regulations, to
prevent g lare for traffic behind your vehicle.
- Please observe legal regulations when using
the lighting systems described.
(D Tips
- The light sensor for the automatic head­
lights is in the rearview mirror mount.
Therefore, do not place any stickers in this
area on the windshield.
- Some functions of the exterior lighting can
be adjusted

-If you turn off the ignition while the exterior
lights are on and open the door, you will

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

brake pedal or the ac celera to r pedal and press
the switch {®) at the same time to re lease the
parking b rake . The indicator ligh ts in the switch

Your veh icle is eq uipped w ith an elec tromechan i­
cal parking b rake. The parking b rake is designed
to prevent the veh icle from rolling unintentional ­
ly and replaces the hand brake.
I n addition to t he normal func tions of a tradi tion­
al hand brake, the e lectromechanica l parking
b rake provides var ious convenience and safety
functions.

Do not press the accelerator pedal inadver­
tently if the veh icle is stationary but the en­
g in e is running and a gear is selected. Other­
wise the ve hicle w ill sta rt to move immediate ­
ly and could result i n a crash .

-If the park ing brake is applied with the ign i­
t ion switched off, the ind icator lights in the
switch and -(USA mode ls)/ . (Cana ­
da models) in the instrument cluster will go
o ut afte r a ce rtain per iod of t ime.
- Occasional noises when the pa rking brake- is
applied a nd re leased a re norma l and are not
a ca use for concer n.
- Whe n the v ehicle is pa rked, the par king
brake goes through a self -test cycle at r egu­
lar i nterval s. Any asso ciated noises are nor­
m al.
Parking
• Press the brake peda l to stop the ve hicle.
"' Pull the switch ~ to set the pa rking brake.
• Move the se lector lever to P.
• Turn the engine off¢&_ .
• Turn the steering wheel when parking on in­
clines so that the wheels w ill roll into the curb
if the vehicle starts movi ng .

- Always take the vehicle key with you when
leaving the vehicle, eve n for a short period
of time. Th is applies partic ula rly whe n chil­
dren remain in the vehicle. Otherw ise chi l­
dren co uld start the engine, re lease the
p arki ng brake or oper ate elec trical eq uip­
ment such as power windows, which in­
creases the r is k of an accident .
- No one sho uld remain in the vehicle when i t
is locked, especia lly children . Locked doors
make it more difficult for emergency wo rk­
ers to get into the vehicle, which puts lives
at risk.

ing .

Starting and automatically releasing the

ing brake is au tom atically re lease d and you r ve ­
hicle begins to move.
The par kin g b rake can be set if yo u must stop the
ve hicl e at a stop light or in traffic. The vehicle
does not h ave to be he ld wit h t he brake pedal.
The parking b rake elim inates the tendency to
creep when a se lector lever position is engaged.
The parking brake re leases automatically and the
vehicle beg ins to move as soon as you press the
accelerator peda l as usual.
Starting on slopes
When starting on in clin es, the hill start assist
p revents the vehicle from uni ntentiona lly ro lling
back. The braking force o f the parking brake is
not released until sufficient driving force has
been built up at the whee ls .

Fo r safety reasons, the pa rking bra ke is re­
l eased automatically only when the d river 's
safety be lt is engaged in the b uckle.
Starting to drive with a trailer
To prevent rolling bock unintentionally on on in ­
cline, do the following:
,.. Keep the sw itch pulled ~ and p ress the acce l­
erator peda l. The parking brake stays applied
and prevents the vehicle from roll ing backward .
,.. You can re lease the switch
[21 once you are s ure
that you are transferring enough drivi ng force
to the wheels by pressing the accele rato r pedal.
Depend ing on the we ight of the rig (vehicle and
trailer) and the severity of the incline, you may
ro ll backwards as you start.
Emergency braking function
This is used if the conventional broke system
fails or locks up.
,.. To brake your ve hicle in an eme rgency, pull the
[21 switc h and hold it p ulled.
,.. As soon as you release the
[21 switch or acce ler-
ate, the b rak ing stops.
If you pu ll the switch «el) and hold it above a
speed of about 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergency
braking fu nction is i nitiated. The vehicle is braked
at all four whee ls by activati ng the hydrau lic
brake system. The brake perfo rmance is s imi lar
to maki ng an emergency stop~.&. .
In order not to act ivate the emergency braking by
mistake, an aud ib le warn ing tone (buzze r)
sounds when the~ switch is pulled . As soon as
the~ switch is released, or the acce le rator pedal
is depressed, eme rgency b raking stops .
A WARNING
Emergency br aking should only be used in an
emergen cy, when t he norma l brake ped al has
failed or the bra ke peda l is obstructed . Us ing
the parking brake to perfo rm emergency brak-
