& WARNING
• USA models: If the BRAKE warning light , the ~ warning light and
the , warning light come on together , the rear wheels could
lock up first under hard braking . Rear wheel lock-up can cause loss
of vehicle control and an accident . Have your vehicle repaired
immediately by your authorized Audi dealer or a qualified work­
shop. Drive slowly and avoid sudden , hard brake application s.
• Canada models:
If the brake warning light CCD>, the ., warning
light and the ABS warning light come on together , the rear
wheels could lock up fir st under hard braking . Rear wheel lock-up
can cau se loss of vehicle control and an accident. Have your
vehicle repaired immediately by your authorized Audi dealer or a
qualified workshop. Drive slowly and avoid sudden, hard brake
appli cations.
• If the brake warning /indicator light does not go out after a few
seconds and the parking brake released , or lights up while you are
driving , the fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir i s too low. If you
believe that it is safe to do so , proceed immediately at low speed
to the nearest authorized Audi dealer or qualified repair facility and have the brake system inspected .
• Always keep in mind that after several brake applications, you
will need greater pressure on the brake pedal to stop your vehi cle.
Do not rely on strained brakes to respond with maximum stopping

power in critical situations . You must allow for in creased brak ing
distances. The extra di stance used up by fading brakes could lead

You can centrally lock and unlock your vehicle and start the engine
with the mas ter key with remote control.
@ Valet k ey
The va le t key fits only the driver's door and the ignition lock . If you
have to leave the key with somebody else, you are well -advised to
t urn over the valet key only .
Be aware that the rear lid can be opened from inside the veh ic le with
the remote rea r lid release located in the driver's door . Before you
turn over the valet key you shou ld therefore lock the rear lid
mechanica lly with the master key .
T ur n th e mas ter key
clo ckwi se to the hori zontal positi on and pull it
out. This has two effects:
• the
remote rear lid release i s deactivated ,
• the lid will remain l ocked when the power locking system is actu­
ated .

c hildren the opportunity to start the engine and /or a ctivate vehicle
s y stem s such a s the power w indo ws e tc. Un supervi sed operat ion
of any vehi cle system by children c an re sult in serious injury .

• I f you open the driver 's door wi th the key left in the ignit ion lock,
a chime w ill sound . T his is your reminder to remove the key and lock
the door .
• For security reasons, replacement keys are only available from
Audi deale rs. •

Openin g a nd clo sin g
• After un locking the vehicle, you have 60 seconds to open a door
or the rear lid. After 60 seconds, the vehicle automatically locks and
the anti-theft a larm system activates again .
The rear lid can be locked or unlocked either by using the remote
control
or by turning the key ins ide the driver's door lock. Unlocking
the vehicle with the remote control will on ly
unlock the rear lid, to
open it, the lid handle needs to be pressed .
Lock ing t he ve hicle
You can lock the vehicle from outside either by using the remote
control
o r by turning the key inside the drivers's door lock . When
you
l o ck the vehic le :
• All doors and the rear lid are locked .
• All turn signal lights will flash once when the car is locked.
• The anti -theft alarm system is activated. The horn of the anti ­
t heft alarm system wi ll sound and the anti-theft alarm system readi ­
ness light, located in the upper part of the driver's door panel, will
start to blink.
• The vehicle interior lights turn off.
Unlo ck ing and lo ckin g th e ve hicle using th e
C onven ien ce key *
The Con ve nie n ce key* feature is a keyless system which al lows you
to unlock the vehicle via sensors in the door handle . Lock ing is like ­
wise
keyless using a lock button. Each door is equipped with a
sensor and lock button.
P ower s ide door clo ser*
The vehicle is equipped with a power side door closer . When closing
a door, you simply need to gently push on the door. The door wil l
then automatically close by itself ~
page 53 .
Autom atic lockin g
The automatic locking feature locks a ll the veh ic le doors and the
rear lid when you drive faster than 9 mph (15 km/h). This function can be turned on and off in the
MMI C
entral lo cking Menu
~ page 52.
You can unlock the vehicle from the inside by:
• removing the key from the ignition switch (the vehicle wi ll auto ­
matically unlock itself) or
• pressing the unlock part of the power lock switch
ffi or
pulling the door handle (once to open the door).

• When you lock your veh icle from o utside, nobod y -espec iall y
c h ildr en -should rem ain in sid e the vehicle . R emember , when you
lo ck the vehicle from the out side the window s ca nnot be opened
from t he in side .
• When you l eav e the vehi cle , al ways remove th e ign ition key and
take it with you . Thi s w ill prevent pa ssenger s (childr en , for
exampl e) from acciden tally being locked in the vehicle should they
a cc ident ally p re ss th e p ower lo cking s witch in the door s.
• Do not lea ve children in side the vehi cle un supe rvis ed. In an
e merg ency i t would be impos sible t o ope n th e door s from the
out side wi thou t the key.

• In the event of a crash with a irbag deployment all locked doors
wi ll be automatically un locked to give access to the vehic le occu ­
pants from the outside .
• If the power locking system should malfunction, you can lock
each door individually using the vehicle key~
page 54.
• If the power locking system should fail, you can still open the
fue l tank flap in an emergency ~
page 307.
• You are well advised not to keep valuables inside an unattended
vehic le, visib le or not. Even a properly locked vehic le cannot provide
the security of a safe .•

Doors with power side door closer
The vehicle doors are equipped with a power door closer. When you
want to close an open door, gent ly push on the door. The door w ill
automatically close by itself .
& WARNING
When closing a door, make sure nothing can interfere with the
door . Thi s could caus e serio us per sonal injury .
• You can stop the door from cl osing at any t ime by pulling on the
in side o r out side do or handle .•
Locking and unlocking the vehicle from inside
The vehicle can be locked or unlocke d from the inside
using the p ower locking s witches .

• All diodes turn da rk as soon as one of the doors has been
unlocked .

The luggage compartment is equ ip p ed with f our tie -down
eyelets to secure luggage and other items.

In a collision , the laws of physics mean that even smaller items that
are loose in the vehicle will turn into heavy missiles that can cause
serious injury. Items in the vehicle pick up kinetic energy which
varies with the vehic le and the weight of the item . Vehicle speed is
the most significant factor.
For example , in a frontal collision at a speed of 30 mph (48 km /h) ,
the forces acting on a 10-lb (4 .5 kg) object are abou t
20 times the
normal weight of the item . This means that the weight of the item
would suddenly be the equivalent of about 200 lbs (90 kg). One can
easily imagine the injuries that an i tem of that weight flying free ly

through the passenger compartment can cause in a collision at a
speed considered relatively low.
& WARNING
Weak, damaged or improper straps used to secure items to tie ­
downs can fail during hard braking or in a collision and cause
serious personal injury.
• Always use suitable retaining straps and properly secure items
to the tie-downs in the luggage compartment to help prevent
items from shifting or flying forward.
• Never attach a child seat tether strap to a tie-down .•
Elastic cargo net
The cargo net prevents light objects from sliding around
in the luggage compartment.

of the rear window.

Mounting hooks
There are two mounting hooks under the base of the rear window
inside the luggage compartment. You can attach the cargo net as
well as

The mounting hooks are spring-loaded and will return to their
normal position when not in use.
& WARNING
For strength-related reasons, the mounting hooks can only be
used to secure objects weighing up to 10 lb .

Ski sack
Use the ski sack to transport and protect skis and other
long, light items in the passenger compartment.

Load the ski sack from the luggage compartment.
Loading
- Open the luggage compartment lid and clear a space in
the center.
- Press the release button for the ski sack hatch in the
luggage compartment and pull down the hatch

- Fold out center armrest in the rear seat backrest.
- Press the release button on the lid from inside the
vehicle, and then lower the lid.
- Pull out and unfold the ski sack.
- Load skis or similar objects through the luggage
compartment into the interior of the vehicle~& .
Securing
- Insert the ski sack strap@~ fig. 108 in the center buckle
®·
- Pull the safety belt taut on the free end of the belt@.
Securing in vehicles with power individual rear
seats*
Loop the ski sack safety belt around the center arm rest.
- Pull the safety belt taut on the free end of the belt .
Stowing
- In the luggage compartment, close the ski sack hatch.
- Fold the ski sack carefully and stow away.
- Close and engage the inner hatch.

• The ski sack is intended only for the transportation of ski s and
other light objects . To reduce the risk of serious per sonal in jury,
neve r tran sport heavy or pointed objects in the ski sa ck.
• When braking rapidly or during an accident , the load could be
d is pl ac ed and cau se inju ry to o ccupants .
• Sharp edges on the load mu st be covered for protection.
Always f asten the belt t ightly around th e sa ck and it s contents
=> pag e 102 , fig. 108.

Never stow the ski sack away when i t is sti ll wet or damp (for
examp le, snow me lting from skis) . Allow it to dry completely before
stowing it away. •
Roof rack
First things first
A roof rack can be fitted to carry addi tio nal luggage on
the roof.
- Always read and follow the i nstructions provided by the
roof rac k manufacture r w hen t he roof rack system must
be installed.
I f a roof rack or similar luggage carrying equipment is to be
insta lled, please note the following:
• To enhance the vehicle's streaml ined design, rain gu tters have
been molded into the roof. It is not possible to use norma l roof
racks . Only instal l a roof rack sp ecifically designed f or your mo del
A8. Contact the nearest Audi dea ler for information on approved
m odula r roof racks for your veh icle .
Controls and equip ­
ment
• T hese approved roof racks are the basis for a comp lete roof rack
sys tem . Add itio nal attachments for the basic roof rack are neces ­
sary to safe ly transport luggage, bicycles, surf boards, skis or smal l
boats. All necessary hardware fo r these systems is available at your
authorized Audi dea ler.
• We reco mmend t hat you keep the installation i nstructi ons for
your roof rack system together with your Owner's literature in the
vehicle .
When should the ro of r ac k be remo ved ?
• Before g oing th rough an a uto matic car wash (it is bes t to ask the
car wash operator for advice)
• When not i n use, to reduce fue l consumption, wind noise and to
guard against theft.
& WARNING
• Use of an unapproved roof r ack or in corre ct mounting of an
a pp roved roof r ack can c ause the roof rack or the ite ms attached
to it to fall off the roof onto the road .
• Obje cts falling from the roof of a veh icle c an c ause a cras h and
personal inj ury .
• Onl y mount the sy stem between the marking s shown in
=> page 104 , fig. 109.
• The roof ra ck sy stem must be installed e xa ctly a ccording to the
instruction s provided .

• Your vehicle warranty does not c over any damages t o the vehicle
caused by using roof racks or mounting structures not approved by
Audi for your vehicle. The same applies to damage resulting from
incorrect roof rack installation.
• Always check t he r oof rack m ount ings and hardware before eac h
trip and during a trip to make sure everything is securely tightened . .,,

If necessary, retighten the mountings and check the entire system
from time to time.
• After mounting a roof rack system, or when you transport
objects on the roof of your vehicle, the height of the vehicle is natu­
rally increased . Be careful when driving under low bridges or in
parking garages for examp le. This cou ld cause damage to the load
and even the vehicle itself. •
Mounting locations
Safe installation of a roof rack requires that the rack
supports are m ounted between the small arrows marked
inside the door frames on all four doors .

Mount the roof racks suppo rts in the side roof moldings. Make sure
to position the supports on
all four doors between the points
marked by small arrows~ fig . 109. The markings can only be seen
when the doors are open .•
Loading the roof rack
Always distribute loads evenly. Make sure anything on the
r o of rack is securely tied down .

- Always attach items to the roof rack securely before you
drive off.
T he maximum permissible roo f weight is 220 lb 1100 kg ). The roof
we ight is made up o f the weight of the roo f rack system and the
weight of the object being transported .
When using a roof rack system which has a lower load carrying
capacity , you must not use up the total maximum permissible load
carrying capacity specified above . Instead, you should load the roof
r ack system only to the maximum capacity specified by the manu ­
facturer of the roof rack system .
& WARNING

T he selector lever must be in Nor P. If one of the driving positions
is engaged a safety switch w ill preven t the eng ine from being
started. See also=>
page 130.
Before you move the selector lever from the P position, you must
a lways apply the brake pedal before and while depressing the
button in the hand le of the se lector lever .
_& WARNING
• Unintended v ehicle movement c an cause serious injury .
- When the selector lever i s in a driving po sition , the vehicle
may creep, even at idle speed . Therefore do not release the
parking brake or foot brake until you are ready to move ,
be cau se power is tran smitted to the wheel s as soon as a
driving po sition i s engaged.
- Do not accelerate while selecting a driving pos ition . At this
time the engine must be at idle speed so that undue stress is
not placed on the clut che s in the t ransmission .
-Remember : - even when stopped briefly with the automatic
transmi ssion in "D" or "R ", engine po wer is being tr ansmitted
to the wheels. Your vehicle could "creep " forward or ba ckward .
When stopped , keep the brake pedal fully depres sed and u se
the parking brake if ne ces sary to keep the vehicle from rolling.
• If the selecto r leve r is unintentionally mo ved into N whi le you
are dr iving, take your foot off the accelerator pedal and wait for
the eng ine to return to idle speed before sele cting a dr iving posi ­
tion .
• Never shift into "R " or "P " when the ve hicle is in motion .
• Never get out of the driver 's seat when the eng ine i s running .
• If you must get out of the vehicle , move the selector lever
s ecurely into the P po sition and apply the park ing brake firmly.
• If the engine must remain running , never have any driving po si­
tion engaged when che cking under the hood . Make sure the
selector lever has securely engaged and is locked in "P" with the
p ark ing br ake firmly set =>
page 301 , "E n gine compart ment ".

Otherwise , any in crease in engine speed may set the vehi cle in
motion , even with the parking brake applied. •
Selector lever positions
This section describes the selector lever positi ons and
drivi ng ra nges .

The selector leve r posi tion engaged appears next to the selec tor
lever as wel l as in the instrument c luster display . A lso, the current
gear engaged is sh own in positi ons D and S .
P -Park
In this selector leve r pos it ion the transmission is mechanica lly
locked . Engage
P on ly when the vehicle is completely stopped=> &
in "Driving the automatic transm ission" on page 166 .
To shift in or out of position P, you must first press and hold the
brake peda l
and then press the re lease bu tton in t he se lecto r leve r
handle while moving the selector lever to or from
P . You can shift
out of this position only with the ignit ion on.
R -Re ver se
The transmission wi ll au tomatically select the lowest gear ratio
when you shift into reverse .
